Some scientists claim that creativity thrives when nature is out of balance. This is apparent with the latest works displayed by Edith Baumann in Jazz Notes. Structure and randomness is greatly emphasized in her paintings. It’s not always about playing the right notes all the time nor is random always a bad thing. Paradoxically, it can be controlled, and instilled with contextual meaning. The balanced, yet unbalanced nature of Baumann’s work with its minimal, yet intricate form, assist with the overall theme of structure and randomness. Baumann uses a small brush and many layers as part of her meditative process when painting. The simple appearance of her pieces are in stark contrast to their complex beginnings. By grinding her own pigment and slowly adding acrylic disperser, she achieves a very raw, very visceral mood and emotion in her work. The addition of different color layers help the fields to breathe while paint applied by hand enlivens the edges. Edith Baumann received her Master of Fine Arts degree at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. Jazz Notes is her first solo exhibition since her 2011 show at Modernism in San Francisco. She has been featured in several group exhibitions in the past year including Marks and Movement: 5 Painters at Pete and Susan Barrett Gallery in Santa Monica, Ed’s Party: A Sphere of Influence in the LA Art Scene at William Turner Gallery, and a two person group show with Peter Alexander at Joe’s Restaurant in Venice, Ca.
