Thank

You

KateliYana We are the two strange English speaking girls that you may have already met. Our names are Katelina and Yana and we will be staying in Padulle, Sala Bolognese for one year. During this year we will be working as volunteers for the community of Sala Bolognese. This is part of European voluntary service, part of the program “Youth in action”. This service gives you the opportunity to live in a foreign country (mostly in Europe) and to take part in projects based on different subjects (environmental, European awareness, media and communication, non-formal education etc.). The project that we are working on is called “Next generation”, it is organized based on the collaboration between “YouNet”, an NGO from Bologna, and the community of Sala Bolognese. We are in Sala Bolognese to give non formal education in English to children in different parts of the community (schools, kinder gardens, library and the youth center). My name is Yana, 23 years old and I come from Sofia, Bulgaria. I graduated as a bachelor last year and I was working in IBM Bulgaria but I left my job to come to Italy. I speak Bulgarian, Spanish, English and I’m trying to learn Italian. My sending organization’s name is “Youth development center- Mutual aid”- Kazanlak. Their main job is connected to the preservation of the culture and history of the Bulgarians, the creation of favorable conditions for the promotion of the culture and arts of the Balkans peoples and the peoples of Southeast Europe in the rest of Europe and the world, to support the development of young people by helping them to develop their physical, creative and spiritual qualities to be good citizens of Republic of Bulgaria, etc. I came here to be in this project because I am really interested in working with kids and I would also really like if I have the chance to make an environmental education sessions and workshops with children. My name is Katelina, I’m 23 years old and I come from Antwerp, Belgium. In my hometown I just started to go for my second bachelor and I also work as a salesperson. This year I’ll try to learn Italian but for now I just speak Dutch (Flemish), English and French. My sending organization is “Joetz”. It’s a youth organization that does a lot of different things. They organize youth camps, participate in Youth in action projects and organize all kinds of projects on health topics. I’ve been a volunteer for this organization since five years, this in the health department. We mostly give sexual education in schools and youth organizations. Another thing that we do is go around with our Condo-van to sell condoms and give information about safe sex on festivals and other big events. This all using methods like non-formal and peer-to-peer education. I came to this project because I was looking for a new experience and to learn about the difference between Italy and Belgium in culture and way of working.

NEW YORK

New York is a city of around 8 million inhabitants, located in the state with the same name. It is the most populated city in the United States, and one of the most influential economic and cultural centers of the American continent and the whole world. Located on the so-called Bay of New York, partly on land and partly on islands, the city is divided into five parts: Manhattan, Bronx, Queens, Brooklyn and Staten Island.

Statue of liberty The Statue of Liberty stands at the entrance of the port on Hudson River as an ideal welcome to all those who arrive in the U.S.. In the previous century, for those who were in search of a better life, the Statue was the first image that immigrants saw. It was a symbol of welcome and hope. The French FrĂŠdĂŠric Auguste Bartholdi and Gustave Eiffel designed this statue. It was built between 1880-1886 and consists of a network of steel and copper. The basis is a gray-pink granite of Sardinian origin. The Statue of Liberty is 93 meters high and is visible up to 40 miles away. It represents a woman wearing a long robe and proudly holds a torch in one hand while the other holds a book with the date of the American Independence Day. On her head she wears a crown with seven points. They represent the seven seas and the seven continents.

The Madame Tussauds Museum in London is one of the most famous wax museums in the world. although there are many wax museums all over the world. Marie Tussauds learned the wax art from Alsace. He had learned the art of wax modeling from a young age, creating the first masterpieces. In 1802 he left Paris for England, taking with him his works. This collection formed the basis of the actual wax museum in London.

The London Eye is a Ferris wheel built in 1999 and opened to the public in March 2000. With its 135 meters, it was the highest Ferris wheel in the world until the construction of The Star of Nanchang (2006), and later the Singapore Flyer. This last one is 25 meters higher than the London Eye.

London has more to give than these building. Mostly during the night London is beautiful, this especially because of all the buildings and lights you can see in the reflection of the Thames.

THE BEGINNING In 2010, Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Harry Styles, and Louis Tomlinson auditioned as solo candidates for the seventh series of British television singing competition The X Factor. After they failed as solo artists, the judges chose to put them together to form a five-piece boysband. In this way they qualified for the "Groups" category. Their first song as a group was an acoustic version of "Torn”, originally sang by Natalie Imbruglia. The group quickly gained popularity in the UK. One Direction finished in third place and immediately after the finals their song "Forever Young" was leaked onto the internet.

UP ALL NIGHT Released in September 2011, One Direction's debut single "What Makes You Beautiful" became number one on the UK Singles Chart, after being the most pre-ordered Sony Music Entertainment single in history. "Gotta Be You" and "One Thing" both peaked within the UK Singles Chart top ten. "What Makes You Beautiful" was released in the United States in February 2012, becoming the highest debut for a British act since 1998. In December 2011, One Direction started their first headlining UK concert tour, the “Up All Night Tour”. In early 2012, they announced that the tour would also take place in Australia and North America. A recording of a concert from the tour, “Up All Night: The Live Tour”, was released in May 2012.

TAKE ME HOME One Direction's second album, “Take Me Home”, was released in November 2012. The lead single, "Live While We're Young", peaked into the top ten in almost every country. “Take Me Home” sold 540,000 copies in its first week in the US and topped the charts in more than thirty-four other countries. Their debut album Up All Night became the third best-selling album and Take Me Home the fifth bestselling album of 2012 in the United States.

MADAME TUSSAUDS One Direction became the first boysband to be created as wax figures since The Beatles' in 1964. The Madame Tussauds museum created a special themed area where fans can enter in the world of One Direction. Most importantly, visitors are able to sit down right next to their heroes’ wax figures, look deep into their eyes and put fingers through their hair.

Rammstein Rammstein is a German metal band formed in 1993 in Berlin. Their music genre is described as "tanz metal”. “Tanz” is German for dance. The name "Rammstein" refers to the Ramstein Air Base in Germany, where there was a serious plane crash in 1988. The extra “m” was added to suggest an analogy with the verb “rammen” (bump with violence), while Stein means "stone”.

The history of Rammstein Rammstein was founded in 1993 by Richard Kruspe. Richard motivated his roommates Oliver Riedel (bassist) and Christoph Schneider (drummer), and also Till Lindemann, to enter the contest Berlin Senate Metro. The new-born group won the competition, which had as its prize the ability to record a studio album. For this album the band got completed with two extra members: guitarist Paul Landers and keyboardist Christian Lorenz. In March 1995, the band finished recording “Herzeleid”, the first album. In 1996, director David Lynch got impressed by the band's music so he decided to enter some of their songs on the soundtrack of the film “Lost Highway”. Meanwhile, Rammstein began to work on their second album, “Sehnsucht”. After it was published for just two weeks it reached first place in the standings. It was a special CD, it had the unique feature of six different available covers, one for each member of the band. In 1999, Rammstein got the chance to accompany Kiss on their tour along America. In February of the same year they received a nomination for the Grammy for Best Metal Performance. In August that year, they released their double album "Live aus Berlin". Between 2002 and 2003, the group turned out less and less active. However, some of their songs were included in the soundtracks of several films. Examples of these films are “Hellboy II”, “Resident Evil”, “The Matrix”.

House music is a genre of electronic dance music that originated in the American city of Chicago in the early 1980s. Early house music was generally dance-based music characterized by repetitive 4/4 beats. House is up-tempo music for dancing.

The genre has remained popular and fused into other popular subgenres. Today, house music remains popular in both clubs and in the mainstream pop scene. This while still maintaining a strong foothold on underground scenes across the globe. In the early 1980s, Chicago club & radio DJs were playing various styles of dance music, including older disco records, newer Italo disco, hip hop and electro funk tracks. During 2010 there were multiple new sounds in house music developed by numerous DJs. Sweden knew a prominence of snare-less minimal Swedish house with the emergence of Sebastian Ingrosso, Axwell, Steve Angello, (These three formed a trio called Swedish House Mafia) Avicii, Eric Prydz etc. Netherlands brought together a concept of "Dirty Dutch" house subgenre characterized by very abrasive leads and darker arpeggios, with prominent DJs Laidback Luke, Mat Zo, Nicky Romero, Porter Robinson, Bingo Players, Afrojack, Skrillex, R3hab, Tiesto, etc. Elsewhere, fusion genres derivative of 2000s progressive house returned to prominence, especially with the help of DJs Calvin Harris, David Guetta and Fonzerelli in Europe, Deadmau5, Eric Prydz, Kaskade and Wolfgang Gartner in the US and Canada. The growing popularity of such artists led to the emergence of electro house sounds in popular music, such as the will.i.am and Britney Spears single "Scream and Shout" released in 2013, which features a characteristically progressive house beat. Another song with a house/techno beat would include "Sweet Nothing" by Calvin Harris.

Pop Music What is pop music? Everyone has heard of pop music but very few understand what it really is. Pop music is a genre which originated in it's modern form in the 1950s, deriving from Rock-and-roll. As a genre, pop music, is very eclectic. It includes generally short-to-medium length songs. The instruments that are typically used in Pop music are guitars, drums and bass. POP is short of popular, so the full name would be popular-music. The pop genre is the most popular especially for young people. Pop music helped the music industry to earn millions of dollars.

Artists The best singers of pop music are: Michael Jakson, Madonna, Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake and Maxwell. Being a pop singer means to become famous, rich and desired by millions of fans. Each pop singer has its own style, different from the others. For example you can find the difference between the pop-romantic style of Whtiney Houston and the pop-rock of Michael Jackson.

Michael Jackson Michael is recognized as the king of pop. He is our absolutely favorite pop singer. The singer was, for months, the focus of major scandals. It seemed that he was bothering children. He has been set up for this process and the charges against him were later dropped. The singer died on the 25th June 2009, in mysterious circumstances. The police thinks that the responsible for his death is his doctor who gave him too many pills.

Johnny Depp Johnny Depp is a very famous actor, who already casted in a lot of movies. He’s a good man. He started his career when he was only 21 years old. This in the film “A Nightmare on Elm Street”.

Through the years he worked together with many other great actors you might know. For example: Orlando Bloom, Penelope Cruz, Keira Knightley, Angelino Jolie, Jude Law and Robert Downey JR.

Johnny’s best friend is Tim Burton, a famous director. With him he created a lot of films.

I like him very much because he has so many characters inside himself. And also because he puts big passion and great care in every interpretation.

Cars And Planes

Lamborghini The story of Lamborghini is very close to a particular fairy tale involving magic beans, giant beanstalks and multi-million dollar exotic car empires. Born in 1916 in Italy, Ferruccio Lamborghini’s talent was first noticed during the First World War. His primary job was fixing broken engines, a task that he easily completed. He established a small motorcycle and repair shop that turned out to be a very money-making enterprise.

By 1960, he had expanded in the heating and air conditioning business. Both turned out very successful. As the former owner of Oscas, Ferraris and Maseratis, Ferruccio was well aware of car engineering at the time. One day, Ferruccio decided to pay a visit to Ferrari owner, Enzo. This for issues he had faced with one of his models. Enzo simply sent Ferruccio for a walk.

The Lamborghini factory was built in Sant’Agata near Bologna on a 90,000 square ft. area. Employees to fill the factory were found really quick. It took only 8 months to start.

Then Lamborghini started on his dream cars, with the 350 GTV. The engine of this model delivered a spectacular 350 HP and made its debut at the Turin auto show in 1963. The GTV was followed by the 450 GT and the four-seater 450 2+2.

The airplanes’ engines Introduction Airplanes come in a variety of sizes, shapes, and wing configurations. The broad spectrum of uses for airplanes includes: recreation; transportation of goods; transportation of people and military; research. Most planes are flown by a pilot who is on board of the aircraft. There are also some that are designed to be controlled by a remote or a computer.

Propeller engines Smaller and older propeller planes make use of reciprocating engines (or piston engines) to turn a propeller to create thrust. The amount of thrust a propeller creates is determined by its disk area (the area in which the blades rotate). If the area is too small, efficiency is poor, and if the area is large, the propeller must rotate at a very low speed to avoid going supersonic and creating a lot of noise. Larger modern propeller planes such as the Dash 8 use a jet engine to turn the propeller, primarily because an equivalent piston engine in power output would be much larger and more complex.

Jet engines Jet aircraft are propelled by jet engines, which are used because the aerodynamic limitations of propellers do not apply to jet propulsion. These engines are much more powerful than a reciprocating engine for a given size or weight and are comparatively quiet and work well at higher altitude. Most modern jet planes use turbofan jet engines which balance the advantages of a propeller, while retaining the exhaust speed and power of a jet. This is essentially a ducted propeller attached to a jet engine, much like a turboprop, but with a smaller diameter. When installed on an airliner, it is efficient so long as it remains below the speed of sound (or subsonic).

Electric engines An electric aircraft runs on electric motors rather than internal combustion engines, with electricity coming from fuel cells, solar cells, super capacitors, power beaming or batteries. Currently, flying electric aircraft are mostly experimental demonstrators, including manned and unmanned aerial vehicles.

Rocket engines In World War II, the Germans deployed the Me 163 Komet rocket-powered aircraft. The first plane to break the sound barrier in level flight was a rocket plane: the Bell X-1. The later North American X-15 broke many speed and altitude records and laid much of the groundwork for later aircraft and spacecraft design. Rocket aircraft are not in common usage today, although rocket-assisted take offs are used for some military aircraft. Recent rocket aircraft include the Spaceship One and the XCOR EZ-Rocket.

Ramjet engines A ramjet is a form of jet engine that contains no major moving parts and can be particularly useful in applications requiring a small and simple engine for high-speed use, such as with missiles. Ramjets require forward motion before they can generate thrust and so are often used in conjunction with other forms of propulsion, or with an external means of achieving sufficient speed such as a parent aircraft or catapult. Ramjet works by using the forward motion of the vehicle to force air through the ramjet without resorting to turbines or vanes. Fuel is added and ignited, which heats and expands the air to provide thrust.

Scramjet engines Scramjet aircraft are still in the experimental stage. A scramjet is a supersonic ramjet and aside from differences with dealing with internal supersonic airflow works like a conventional ramjet. This type engine requires very high initial speed in order to work. The NASA X-43 is an experimental unmanned scramjet that set a world speed record in 2004 for a jet-powered aircraft with a speed of Mach 9.7, nearly 12,000 kilometers per hour (7,500 mph) at an altitude of about 36,000 meters (118,000 ft.).

Food and cooking

Marta Barrera Hi! My name is Marta and I am the English teacher of the school “A. Ferri” in Padulle. I’m very glad to write an article for this MEGAzine because it has been a wonderful experience thanks to Yana and Katelina, the two great volunteers that arrived in February in Padulle. I would like to talk about a different type of lesson I experienced with one of my classes, II D. We had the possibility to….cook together!!! The idea to cook came from a lesson during which we talked about food, nutrition and daily diet. Also, the same day, one of the boys of the class prepared cupcakes for us! The idea was clear: why don’t we cook cupcakes in English, seen that the original recipe comes from UK? This was the ideal way to practice the English language doing something different and funny! After the first excitement I faced a big problem: we don’t have any oven at school! But then another idea, the right one, came to me: why don’t we prepare cake pops? The recipe comes from USA so that way we can practice our English and….they don’t need an oven. And that is what we did!

Cake Pops Ingredients: - cake mix of your choice - frosting - chocolate for melting - white chocolate wafers (optional) - sprinkles for decoration - lollipop sticks - Styrofoam block - food colouring (optional)

Preparation: 1. Bake a cake. It doesn't matter what type. Make the flavour that you enjoy most! 2. After taking the cake out of the oven, be sure it is totally cooled down before you start transforming it into cake pops. 3. Using either your hands or a spoon, take the cooled cake out of the pan and place it into a large bowl. Mix to break down the cake, make sure that all there is left is crumbs! 4. Choose a flavour of frosting that you like. Add about half of it into the crumbs. Basically what you want is to form a doughy texture again. If you need to add more frosting, feel free to do so. Make sure it is all mixed and ensure that there is no part of the cake crumb mixture without frosting. 5. Use a cookie scooper to scoop out little balls. Round them out with your hands. Make sure that each of them forms a perfect little ball. 6. Put each cake ball onto a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper. Then place in the freezer for 10 minutes or so to firm up.

50

Journalist Marta Barrera

7. Melt some chocolate in a double boiler. 8. Dip the lollipop stick into melted chocolate then insert into the cake ball. Insert the stick into the little round balls a little less than halfway; just as far as it feels sturdy to hold is adequate. 9. Dip The cake ball into the melted chocolate. 10. Set aside to cool so that the chocolate hardens. Once they have cooled down, dip each cake pop into the melted chocolate one more time. This is to ensure that they are fully covered. 13. Add sprinkles, frosting, or toppings as desired. 14. Use the Styrofoam block to stick the cake pops into and for display. 15. Keep on with this process until you are all the way finished. Then (if you want) melt some white chocolate. Put it into a plastic bag and cut a hole at the corner. Decorate each cake pop using the melted white chocolate in the way you want. This step provides a great opportunity to write a person's name or to draw images, patterns, symbols.

Yoghurt Cake Yogurt cake is not one of the most popular cakes. But it’s fresh, light and suitable for every occasion. It is easy to prepare and you do not need an oven. In addition, you can use all the yogurt that you like, and so create a new cake every time. The ideal and most used recipe is the following. The ingredients: 200 gr. of biscuits 2 cups of yogurt 50 gr. of powdered sugar 250 ml. whipped cream 100 gr. of butter Preparation: - Melt the butter in a saucepan over low heat and, in the meantime, crush the cookies. - Add the butter to the crushed cookies and mix until you get a smooth paste. - Spread the mixture on the bottom of a pan to form the basis of your cake. Now you can take care of the cake itself. - Whip the cream with an electric mixer, gradually adding the yogurt and powdered sugar. - Put the cream on the biscuit and keep everything in the fridge.

Pizza

the history The word "pizza" was documented the first time in 976 in Gaeta and after that in different parts of Central and South Italy. The history of the dish itself is not very clear or well documented. Pizza was probably founded out of focaccia, a flat bread known to the Romans as "panis focacius". To this kind of bread toppings were then added, so it became pizza.

Etymology The term "pizza" first appeared "in a Latin text from the southern Italian town of Gaeta in 997 AD. This claimed that a person that rents a certain property has to give the bishop of Gaeta 'duodecim pizze' (twelve pizzas) every Christmas Day, and another twelve every Easter Sunday.

Origins Dishes similar to pizza have been prepared for already a really long time. Records of people adding other ingredients to bread to make it more tasteful can be found in ancient history.

Ways of preparing In restaurants, pizza can be baked in different types of ovens. Only it’s important to know that every type of pizza gives another taste/look to the pizza. With deck ovens, the pizza is slid inside on a long paddle, called a peel. Then it’s baked directly on hot bricks or a screen (a round metal plate, typically aluminum). When made at home pizza can be baked on a special stone in a regular oven to reproduce the effect of a brick oven. Another option is grilled pizza, in which the crust is baked directly on a barbecue grill. A third way of preparing pizza is to bake it in a pan rather than directly on bricks. Crust The bottom of the pizza, called the "crust", may vary widely according to style: thin as in a typical hand-tossed pizza or thick as in a typical pan pizza. It is traditionally plain, but there can be also added garlic or herbs, or it can be stuffed with cheese. The outer edge of the pizza is sometimes referred to as the ‘cornice’ (frame).

Lasagna The history of Lasagna Lasagna has a long and luxurious history. The Romans developed a type of food for which they used the term "lasagnum“ (or today, “lasagna”). It was served as a dish with layers of a pasta and different fillings in-between. With the extent of the Roman empire, this new "lasagnum" dish spread all across Europe. Eventually it reached Britain, where it was published in a cookbook for the first time. The early Italians changed the name from "lasagnum" to "lasagna". Over the years the definition of the word lasagna began to change. It was previously referred to the plate it was baked in. But through the years people began to see it as the delicious pasta meal that was in the plate. In modern cooking terms, it now means layers of thin pasta, with meat, cheese, and tomato sauce squeezed in-between.

How to make lasagna Ingredients: 1lb. ground beef 2-1/2 cups Mozzarella cheese 1 container (15 oz.) Ricotta Cheese ½ cup Parmesan Cheese ¼ cup chopped fresh parsley 1 egg, beaten 1 jar (24 oz.) spaghetti sauce 1 cup water 12 lasagna noodles, uncooked Preparation: Heat the oven to 175°C. Bake the meat in a large pan on medium-high heat. Meanwhile, mix 1-1/4 cups mozzarella, ricotta, 1/4 cup Parmesan, parsley and egg until blended. Drain the meat and then return it into the pan. Blend in the spaghetti sauce, and add 1 cup water to empty sauce jar. Cover the total with a lid and shake well. Spread 1 cup meat sauce onto the bottom of 33x22cm baking pan. Top this with layers of pasta, 1/3 of the ricotta cheese mixture and 1 cup of meat sauce. Repeat those layers until all the ingredients are used. Cover the total with aluminium foil. Bake for 1 hour or until heated through. To get the best result remove the aluminium foil after 45 min. Let the dish cool down for a little while before cutting and serving it. And, the most important... Eat it! Buon appettito!

MAKE-UP

AND

NAIL ART

Make-up Cosmetics (known as make-up) are care substances used to enhance the appearance or scent of the human body. They come from the world of Ancient Greece and are generally mixtures of chemical compounds. Some come from natural sources and others are synthetic.

A type of cosmetics is called "make-up," which refers primarily to colouring products intended to improve the user’s appearance. Many manufacturers make the difference between decorative cosmetics and care cosmetics.

Nail Art Nail art is a creative activity that involves pictures or designs on fingernails. These days fingernails and toenails are seen, by some people, as important points of beauty. Nail art is also a type of fashion activity, related to Manicuring. Nail polish was used in the ancient world. In the beginning it was made from a combination of beeswax, egg-white, gelatin, vegetable dye (the natural color that a vegetable has), and Arabic gum.

Nail art Olympics In Las Vegas, in 2001 started the “Nail Art Olympics. This year the competition took place in Rome from 3 to 4 February. The jury was composed by eight people from 5 different countries. They held the fate of 220 competitors in their hands.

SWIMMING Swimming has been an Olympic sport since the first Summer Games in Athens, Greece, in 1896. There are 34 swimming events. They range in distance from 50 meters sprints to 10.000 meter marathons. Competitions for men and woman are almost identical, except for the distance in the freestyle event (800 meters for women and 1.500 meters for men). Swimming isn’t only an Olympic water sport it also includes diving, synchronized swimming and water polo.

A better way to breathe In most sports, we don’t have to work very hard to get oxygen. But in swimming we have to lift or turn our necks to get air. Cycling or running at maximal exertion requires between 50 and 60 respirations per minute. If you are swimming anywhere from 800 yards to 2.4 miles, chances are your stroke rate is 50 to 60 strokes per minute. A swimmer taking 60 strokes per minute and breathing to one side on every stroke cycle takes only 30 breaths per minute.

Synchronized swimming Synchronized swimming is a water sport, which is a hybrid of swimming, gymnastics and dance, in which the athletes perform exercises in water, choreographed to music. The competitions can be single, double, trio, and team combined. Synchronized swimming requires water capacity, strength, endurance, flexibility, grace, artistry, an exact coordination of time and breath control. It is a sport dominated by women although, in recent years, men began to appear in this discipline. The athletes of the synchronized swimming are commonly called ‘sincronette’.

The bow and arrow is a projectile weapon system (a bow with arrows) that predates recorded history and is common to most cultures. Archery is the art, practice, or skill of applying it. A bow is a flexible piece of material which shoots aerodynamic projectiles called arrows. A string joins the two ends and when the string is drawn back, the ends of the stick are flexed. When the string is released, the potential energy of the flexed stick is transformed into the velocity of the arrow. Archery is the art or sport of shooting arrows from bows.

Today, bows and arrows are used primarily for hunting and for the sport of archery. Though they are still occasionally used as weapons of war.

The bow and arrow was not the first composite projectile weapon to be invented. It was preceded by the sling and by spear throwers such as the atlatl of the Americas and the woomera of Australia. A number of cultures in historical times lacked the bow and arrow, and in others oral history records a time before its acquisition.

Parts of the bow The basic elements of a bow are a pair of curved elastic limbs, traditionally made from wood, joined by a riser. Both ends of the limbs are connected by a string known as the bow string. By pulling the string backwards the archer exerts compressive force on the string-facing section, or belly, of the limbs as well as placing the outer section, or back, under tension.

The various parts of the bow can be subdivided into further sections. The topmost limb is known as the upper limb, while the bottom limb is the lower limb. At the tip of each limb is a nock, which is used to attach the bowstring to the limbs. The riser is usually divided into the grip, which is held by the archer, as well as the arrow rest and the bow window. The arrow rest is a small ledge or extension above the grip which the arrow rests upon while being aimed. The bow window is that part of the riser above the grip, which contains the arrow rest.

In bows drawn and held by hand, the maximum draw weight is determined by the strength of the archer. The maximum distance the string could be displaced and thus the longest arrow that could be loosed from it, a bow’s draw length, is determined by the size of the archer.

Types of bows There is no one accepted system of classification of bows. Some systems classify bows as either longbows or composite bows. In this system, a longbow is any bow that is made from one material. Composite bows are made from two or more layers of different materials. Other classifications divide bows into three types - simple, backed, and composite. In this scheme, simple bows are made of one material, backed bows are made of two layers, which could be similar or different materials. Composite bows are made of three different layers, usually different materials, but occasionally two of the layers are made from the same material.

Common types of bows include:

Journalist Giulia

Recurve bow: a bow with the tips curving away from the archer. The curves straighten out as the bow is drawn and the return of the tip to its curved state after release of the arrow adds extra velocity to the arrow.

Reflex bow: a bow that curves completely away from the archer when unstrung. The curves are opposite to the direction in which the bow flexes while drawn.

Self bow: a bow made from one piece of wood.

Longbow: a self bow that is usually quite long, often over 5 feet (1.5 meters) long. The traditional English longbow was usually made of yew wood, but other woods are used also.

Composite bow: a bow made of more than one material.

Compound: a bow with mechanical aids to help with drawing the bowstring. Usually, these aids are pulleys at the tips of the limbs.
