Statement from the Town Council re: Wickford Market

Since being formed as a Shadow Town Council in October 2021 and later a full Town Council in May 2022 we have tried to engage with Basildon Borough Council as an interested party regarding the operation of Wickford Market.

It was only in May this year that we were invited to an online meeting with Essex County Council and Basildon Borough Council to discuss the situation appertaining to the permanent closure of the High Street for the Market to continue. Although there are no bus stops in the High Street the bus companies had objected to the permanent closure. At that meeting it was at the suggestion of the Town Council that a meeting be held with the bus companies to discuss their objections.

A hastily arranged meeting was held on 14th June when the Town Council were informed that the bus companies had refused to a meeting.

We were further informed that legal advice had been sought from a KC who said that if it went to a public enquiry, which would be needed to overcome the bus company objections if they aren’t voluntarily withdrawn by them, it was likely it would be lost. The decision was therefore made that the High Street Market would close and move on a temporary basis to Market Lane/Woodlands Road until a permanent location could be found.

Wickford Town Council, subject to conditions, had shown an interest in taking over the operation of the High Street Market with a view to enhancing it. We wish to convey our thanks to the stallholders that have served us over the years and hope that they will be able to trade well at the temporary location and it will not be long before a permanent location can be found for the Market Town of Wickford.
