“If you can’t understand it without an explanation, you can’t understand it with an explanation.” - Haruki Murakami, 1Q84

Preface: To be honest, before I started this studio, I was nervous about how well I would do this semester: whilst a part of me was excited to design on something that was based on something that I would be really interested in (yes... Mermaids but then Horoscopes was later chosen because I wanted to do Zodiacs and Mermaids could be compensated for Pisces!) part of me was just questioning myself whether I’d be good enough. I guess this is because I have always been veering off into my own train of thought - thus completely neglecting the outside audience (which ends up with them always puzzling over why there is always either a red ribbon dancing through my plans or my plans are placed on top of a girl’s face)... Being in this studio, you’ll come to realise (through interaction with architects and non-architects and your friends) that it’s always really hard for anybody to explain what they’re trying to say - especially when we are asked to express it to our best of ability. Unfortunately, no matter how hard we try to express ourselves in the most accurate way possible - there will always be another person who comes and replace our thoughts with their own. It’s a vicious cycle but it’s something that I believe is what motivates us to create something that would eventually leave everyone speechless. Having said, as communication of languages are constantly changed and intertwined with each other there is always a way to come through with what we want to express, let alone it is also a never ending search of the universal language that can make everyone understand what we’re trying to say without having to reinterpret it. But as always, being unanimous doesn’t really comply in the field of languages.

agenda - understanding what architects are trying to communicate with their audience

this lonely scene, the galaxies like dust... this emptiness is normal...

we pass a big vulgar cluster of galaxies among many others, a hundred million light years out...

two little satellite galaxies of our own are the clouds of magellan

giant steps carry us into the outskirts of the galaxy...

... ten to the sixteenth metres, one light year, not yet out to the next star...

normal but quite unfamiliar...

at last, we pass the bright star arcturus and some stars of the dipper

now the orbital path of the neightbour planets... venus and mars then mercury

in one second... crosses the tiled orbit of the moon...

a line extends at the true speed of light

ten to the sixth, a one with six zeros, a milliion metres... ... the earth... as a solid sphere

... the distance a hovering satellite covers in ten seconds, long parades of clouds...

ten to the fourth metres, the distance a supersonic aeroplane can travel in ten seconds...

one hundred metres wide, the distance a man can run in ten seconds, cars crowd the highway, power boats lie at their docks, the colourful bleachers are soldier field... ... the distance a racing car can travel in ten seconds

it begins with a scene oone meter wide which we view from just one metre away...

the richness of our own neighbourhood is the exception

entering the skin, crossing layer after layer... vanish in turn and outer layers of cells...

felty collagen... , a capilarry containing red blood cells

we enter the white cell, ... the porous wall of the cell nucleus

the reality of the man in a coiled coils of dna... as we close in, we come to the double helix itself a molecule like a long twisted ladder ... words of a powerful genetic message

at the atmoic scale, the interplay ... in motion focus on one commonplace group of three hyidrogen atoms bounded by electrical forces...

ten to the minus ten metres... one angstrom

we find ourselves right among those outer electrons...

we come upon the two inner electrongs held in a tighter carbon nucleus so massive and so small

six protons and six neutrons

we are in the domain of universal modules...

electrons in every atom atoms bonded to every molecule out of the farthest galxy

a single proton fills our scene ... one unit ... we saw many clusters of galaxies together

I don’t know where I’m going but I know where I’m heading… Just need to keep walking, walking, walking… My sight, blinded by the brilliant white, left me with no sense as I let my fingers grasp onto something… Yet I could still see nothing, nothing, nothing… My ears, deafened by the white’s roar, has never left me so alone, so empty, so desperate, so bare… And so all I could do is keep on walking, walking, walking… letting the cold bones guide me, till I see a faint glow of colour at the top so warm, so close, yet so far away… Just keep walking, walking, walking...

Mid Semester Presentation Cultural/Concept Sentence: “Seeing past first impressions

xx.xx.xxxx

I’m breathing…

have to endure the obstacles and just continue my journey and let things happen spontaneously.

Or so I think I’m breathing…

They said that’s how I work, my life is fashioned out of a spontaneous movement.

There’s a newspaper there, and all I know is that my mother told me that I could relate myself to that sign.

Yet I don’t know how to be spontaneous… I just only know that what the paper said will be my only guidance.

It’s telling me that I should break my boundaries today and move outside…

xx.xx.xxxx

And I’m trying. I’m cold. xx.xx.xxxx

But I can only keep walking.

I walked out of the barrier now.

Mother said that reading that section will help me.

And all I could think is that the person who wrote about me said that I would walk out of this place.

Those who wrote about me know that there will be a light at the end of the tunnel.

They said that my sensitivity should be at its peak because of the moon high up above.

But the sentence is telling me to persist as the planets are lining up together.

Yet I don’t know what I’m doing… I’m just going to keep walking… walking… walking…

xx.xx.xxxx

the moon is high up tonight. It’s a full moon. I don’t know how to feel except I feel really cold. Is that what being sensitive means? The part they wrote about me in the paper said that I will find a way out of this building. There is some hope there for me right? I feel so trapped and so lost, if I keep on reading it, would it give me directions? I have no sense of direction… and this is all I’ve got

xx.xx.xxxx

The part that they wrote about me in the paper said that I would pass some hardships. I

Yet I still haven’t seen the light yet.

I have to persist. There’s no choice… Is there?

xx.xx.xxxx

I’m seeing something. And I’m shivering. Starving. Cold. But I have to persist. My senses are rising. I could hear more of the sounds. They were right about me. How I would be more aware of what is going on around me. They said that the time I was born that that constellation set my sensitivity level to so high. I’m seeing something flashing. Something so bright. So bright. The part where they wrote about me was right. I have to persist.

I see the light.

I’m walking.

I’m nearly there.

I’m walking.

xx.xx.xxxx

xx.xx.xxxx I’m walking.

I see the light now.

I am walking.

I see the cameras flashing at me.

I am.

The paper is in my hands, and it was my source of freedom.

But why is everyone laughing at me? They said I was a bloody fool. I have no idea why.

xx.xx.xxxx

I see words. So many words, with my fate being written over and over again. Yet the fate is the same. It was the same for everybody. If I share the same fate for everybody. What have I been told? Have I walked out of the place for nothing? Those efforts used… Have they been wasted? Have I used something in vain?

xx.xx.xxxx I’m walking. It’s dark and the moon is up. I have nowhere to go. Where am I good when I am not extraordinary? My fate was and will always be an illusion now. I have nothing now. All I can do is walk back now.

Bachelor Studio Lecture Response Name: Kimberley Kiera Hui Date of lecture: 07/03/2015 Studio: ARC3001 Your Studio instructor: Evie Blackman Lecture name or presenters: Ari Seligmann I. Provide a considered reaction to the lecture. (2-300 words + image/diagram) I was inspired by the opening quotes that were used in the lecture, in particular Greg Lynn’s comment on how he was more interested in the process and how he’d like to decipher the reasons behind the design. In this case, I felt that during the presentation, whilst Ari discusses how Koolhaus presented his simple yet complex concept for the Seattle Public Library, it really brought to attention on how difficult it could be for a finished concept to be fully appreciated unless the progress and process is realised. Moreover, the further expansion of well-known architects’ theories that were also expounded upon such as Le Corbusier’s Five Points of Architecture, Eisenmann’s House series etcetera, it is interesting how some of their projects are successful in displaying those principles yet some of them become detached to their original intentions – which is what I believe a true reflection of how the public would react when they are only given the finished product of a design. What I really appreciate from this lecture was the discussion of architect’s approach to design and in response to the last question of what I consider as an architectural idea, I believe that it is a person’s expressions towards a subject and it is journey of various emotions in response to a condition and how they work towards or around the matter. Thus, the expression that is documented should also be communicated with the public constantly, reducing the level of detachment between the main concept and the finished result.

Bachelor Studio Lecture Response Name: Kimberley Kiera Hui Date of lecture: 20/03/2015 Studio: ARC3001 Your Studio instructor: Evie Blackman Lecture name or presenters: Bonnie Herring, Andy Fergus I. Provide a considered reaction to the lecture. (2-300 words + image/diagram) Both Herring and Fergus pointed out a similar interesting opinion where architecture should be observed in the long run rather than focusing on the short term situations. During the presentation, both Herring and Fergus stressed on the idea of reinforcing and also broadening the definition of architecture and also the public’s general opinion of architecture – in other words, it is to priorities the benefits of small decisions to create future sustainable living over the aesthetics and also cost and return when creating architecture. Nonetheless, whilst both guest speakers spoke about how it requires the push for a communal knowledge and enlightening people with enriched information about architecture, I believe that it is also the push towards the councils – who have a higher power to also have lessons in architecture and sustainable future. As society is more money focused, we should take more leads into creating another culture where Architecture is simply not a building aesthetics focused industry but rather have languages that branches out into the field of engineers, contractors and developers – that way the more knowledge obtained then perhaps not in the distant future architecture would not be focused as a singular, but as on a larger scale instead.

# diagram of the current situation of how architecture is perceived and the ideal of how it could be improved upon

Bachelor Studio Lecture Response Name: Kimberley Kiera Hui Date of lecture: 18/04/2016 Studio: ARC3001 Your Studio instructor: Evie Blackman Lecture name or presenters: Ben Waters, Colby Vexler, and Dennis Prior. Guests: James Fletcher, Yoana Doleva, Shereen Amin, James Taylor, Ari Seligmann I. Provide a considered reaction to the lecture. (2-300 words + image/diagram) From the questions that were discussed in the lecture (the importance of context in relation to the concept, how idea competitions are important, value of the evolution of architectural ideas, importance of architecture as discourse or dialogue), I feel that ideas in architecture works as a feeding system – how one architect’s idea can catalyse various other perspectives hence a pay it forward like matter. However, as they argued that it is possible to design out of context, I’d personally like to disagree, as Ari has pointed out, there are many types of context and I’d like to argue also different types of connotations and denotations that can add context to the building, nevertheless the age of the building can also increase the context of the surroundings. Perhaps sometimes, to design something that appears to be out of context is required in order to give context to the environment. Moreover, how each individual approaches the design also discloses the kind of context the architect is designing off from. Whether it’d be from a drawing or from a photograph or to something that is intangible, how the architects deliver or present their idea through different mediums would also present a different type of context with regards to the environment that they have been presented in. In other words, context is applied to a wide area and cannot be simply be narrowed down to the physical aspect, rather, it should be considered in a manner that it is ever changing through the contribution from discussions, presentations, final product itself and how it will be used in the future.

*Chapel Notre Dame du Haute – an iconic building by Le Corbusier that has been placed in many kinds of context ever since the building’s propsal

Bachelor Studio Lecture Response Name: Kimberley Kiera Hui Date of lecture: 09/05/2016 Studio: ARC3001 Your Studio instructor: Evie Blackman Lecture name or presenters: Evie Blackman, James Fletcher, Ari Seligmann, Arc3001 Cohort I. Provide a considered reaction to the lecture. (2-300 words + image/diagram) The large lecture discussion demonstrated a type of medium used to present an idea. Throughout the whirlwind of adding and readjusting various elements on the conversation panel displays a large encyclopaedia of people’s interpretations of demonstrating architecture. Essentially the evening was a focus on how to express an idea of architecture and also reflecting how each studio was targeting certain elements of design within architecture and then projecting it within their project – nonetheless it was also a challenge to find a cohesive language that allowed everyone to agree with. One of the main focuses within the presentation was the concept of presentation of an idea and also where to take the idea towards (whether it’d be an abstract or literal idea). Namely, Berlin Berlin’s studio was about the competition of ideas and also pushing the limits of how to present their collage of self-exploring ideas within a set boundary, whereas Energy Plus was focusing on the presentation of ideas through their building by feeding on other ideas. Through discussion, it is also evident that the development for each studio beings from developing from a single element and branch out towards certain mediums of presentation. Of course, the development of ideas is also crucial however, I believe that, through the activities and the type of responses that exploded on the discussion board – it proves that presentation of a storyline and the kind of method we go through to achieve the final outcome is a prime factor within architecture.

Bachelor Studio Review Response Name: Kimberley Hui Date of review: 14/04/2016 Studio: ARC3001 Your Studio instructor: Evie Blackman Studio review attended: Metamorphosis – Alysia Bennett I. Give a brief description of the studio/ projects you observed at the review (2-3 sentences): The studio explores the potentials of a certain verb that could be applied to a spatial area.

II. Provide a

considered reaction to the review you observed. (2-300 words) What did you learn from the review presentation(s)? Compare and contrast approaches to the theme with your current studio pursuits? What insights have you gained that might inform your studio pursuits? Unlike my studio, where we are to explore different potentials of different mediums to express our cultural concepts, Metamorphosis strongly expresses strong architectural explorations through an interpretation of a single verb that catalyses their concept. The studio strongly focuses on spatial analysis when it comes to applying the verb to the apartment. However, collectively, each student tackled their verb through a series of movements that could be applied to the space rather than using any static approach. In other words, rather than coming with a solid decision, most of the student’s presentations demonstrates how flexibility and interaction is vital to a building. Nonetheless, a careful consideration, I realised that, each proposal from each student is a reflection of how each given verb is almost close to a synonym, for each proposal all focuses on similar actions and approaches being given however just performed in a different pattern. Overall, perhaps it is the success in which they architecturalise the verbs given that was the most helpful, as I am approaching to a phase in my project where I am now required to express words spatially. So perhaps considering flexibility and interaction will be needed in order to achieve my project successfully.
