Cavendish & Proctorsville Four-season Recreation with Surprises along the Way

W

illiam Cavendish, 18th century British Statesman and the 4th Duke of Devonshire, would be proud. Hailing from the English seaside county known for its fishing, the Vermont town

bearing his name is likewise known for “the big ones.” Designated by the State of Vermont as “trophy trout water,” the Black River meanders lengthwise through Cavendish. Each spring, thousands of two-year-old trout find homes along this stretch of the river, a premier angling destination stocked with mature fish. Paddlers are also hooked on the Black River for kayaking that ranges from thrilling to tranquil, depending on the season.

From knitting to luxurious accommodations, inspired by nature and borne by tradition For more information: vtfishandwildlife.com sixlooseladies.com castlehillresortvt.com yourplaceinvermont.com

Unsurpassed sport fishing, cycling, and wildlife viewing From angling and paddling to cycling and hiking, Cavendish and its village of Proctorsville are built around the natural environment. The peaceful waters of summer are cooled by a green canopy burgeoning from its banks; follow Route 131 along the river or take a jaunt on a back road where forests, meadows, and rolling vistas emerge. Autumn paints the valleys in a breathtaking quilt of red, orange, and yellow, while winter’s crystalline contrasts are more absolute. Beautiful views are synonymous with rich habitat. The Hawks Mountain Wildlife Management Area, 2,183 pristine acres of land conserved in Cavendish, is home to many species of northern New England creatures. Hikers and snowshoe enthusiasts will see evidence of deer, turkeys, and songbirds in season; pickerel frogs, salamanders, and turtles may

be present. The fortunate observer may even spot a moose, black bear, bobcat, or peregrine falcon, all of which have been identified in this northern hardwood forest. The villages of Cavendish and Proctorsville are marked by small businesses and a number of houses faced with “glimmer stone,” which glisten with locally mined mica schist. Inspired by nature and borne by tradition, serenity is woven into the fabric of the village, expressed in shops like Six Loose Ladies. A wide variety of yarn and fiber lines the shelves of the knitting boutique which features locally sourced, hand spun and dyed Alpaca, Shetland, and Icelandic skeins in warm, earthy tones. As Proctorsville diffuses toward Okemo Mountain, the Castle Resort & Spa VT rises from the hills. The immaculate estate is characterized

Chester Built in Good Character

C

hester may well be the prototype for the quintessential, historic New England village. Tucked into the hills between Bromley, Magic, Stratton, and Okemo

mountain resorts, Chester first achieved fame in the late 1700s for its location at the crossroads of Northern New England’s north-south and east-west stagecoach lines.

A destination for historians, outdoor enthusiasts, and artists

The Inn Victoria

Shopping, tea, and glimmerstone granite

B

uzzing with activity, Chester once processed grist, lumber, oil, cotton, wool, and leather in more than twenty factories, mills, and tanneries. At the end of the day, beverages flowed steadily in six taverns and a distillery in this thriving center of colonial commerce. Steepled churches sprang up on the village green, grand Victorian homes dignified the streets, welcoming shops adorned the town center, and classic New England architecture took up residence in Chester. Now the home to eclectic galleries, contemporary arts, antique shops, boutiques, pubs, and restaurants, Chester accommodations range from simple to sophisticated. The Fullerton Inn and Inn Victoria are hubs for this four-season

community of outdoor enthusiasts and artists. Located on the village common facing the gazebo, the Fullerton Inn & Restaurant offers twenty rooms and a delicious “continental plus” breakfast. The past comes alive at Inn Victoria, where overnight guests and visitors may enjoy High Tea. With more than 30 flavors of tea accompanied by savories, sweets, scones, chocolates and fruit, the delightful afternoon respite is served by a formally attired gentleman from the Victorian era. Nominated as one of the “Prettiest Painted Places” in the United States, Chester is a destination for special events. Amid stately structures, white tents, sprawling lawns, and orderly stone fences lend a sense of refinement to weddings as the past ushers in the future.

The tusk is displayed at the Community Historical Museum in Perkins House, located on the Village Green in Belmont. Museum displays recount colonial era life, including an 1849 ceremony in which the last railroad spike was driven to connect Burlington, Vermont, to Boston. The Museum is open to the public and features summer programs and special events. Mount Holly’s role in Vermont’s agricultural history is also illustrated by the farm and tool collections in the Will White Blacksmith Shop, also on the green in Belmont.

Prior to refrigeration, village dairies were as integral to early American life as farriers and blacksmiths, creating delicious aged cheese from excess milk and reaching markets in the urban centers of New York, Boston, and Portland, Maine. Centuries ago, every Vermont village had at least one cheesemaker; Mount Holly is home to America’s oldest cheese factory, Crowley Cheese, built in 1882 of classic post-and-beam construction. n warmer months, the village is an open book. The homestead tells a story of an existence that was necessarily simple and thrifty. The President’s birthplace and family home covers the bare essentials for individuals; similarly, the pews at the church and school spare no comfort. The barn showcases farming equipment, carriages, and snow rollers that compressed the snow, rather than plowing it aside as in modern days. Shop the general store with keepsakes from the site as well as penny candy and amusements; up the stairs is the large vaulted dance hall that served as the 1924 summer office of the White House. Weston & Andover Classic New England at its finest

M

ountains have a way of quietly weighing in on mundane human life through the creation of barriers and even inspiration. And in this fashion, the burg of Andover, named for the

same in Connecticut and Massachusetts, was comprised of the areas surrounding Markham and Terrible Mountains until necessary travel across the highlands became too burdensome. This geological boundary in 1799 manifested in an administrative divide; the western part of Andover, which had been known as “West Town,” became Weston and two separate towns were born.

Rolling conservation land and sweeping views Recognized for its stories, preservation, and architecture, most of Weston Village is a designated National Historic District. Home to the original Vermont Country Store, the Village Store and the Weston Playhouse, with its town green, impeccably maintained whitewashed dwellings, charming waterfall in the center of town, and barn-red buildings, Weston is a classic New England at its finest. The best way to see the town is on foot; during warmer months, the town hosts periodic historic walking tours.

In 1946, the Vermont Country Store threw open its doors, recreating an environment reminiscent of the Orton family’s late-1800s general store. The sprawling shopping destination invites you to step back in time and stroll leisurely down memory lane. Meander through aisles stocked to the rafters with penny candy, Vermont maple syrup and sugar, award-winning Vermont cheese, wine, and beer, personal care remedies, household problem solvers, and more. As purveyors of the practical, classic, and hard-to-find, the Vermont Country 18 Okemo Valley Regional Guide

Store will lead as you rediscover brands from the past such as Tangee® Lipstick, Charles Chips, and Jack-in-the-Box, among many. As you browse through thousands of old-time goods from yesteryear, fuel your nostalgia with lunch or dinner at Vermont Country Store’s Bryant House Restaurant, featuring fresh, locally sourced farm products, an antique soda fountain, and an 1885 barroom. If a cool snack is more your style, enjoy a cone or sundae at Mildred’s Dairy Bar, open in the warmer months. Across the square is the Weston Playhouse, created in 1935 during the depths of the Great Depression and viewed by many as a symbol of hope. Vermont’s oldest professional theatre company welcomes locals and visitors to enjoy world-class musicals and dramas throughout the summer theatre season; the 2014 schedule features “A Chorus Line” among others. The Playhouse also presents opera, juried arts and crafts shows, and special events and concerts throughout the balance of the year. www.yourplaceinvermont.com/weston

TIME IT RIGHT! Take part in annual events that fit your interests July & August — Concerts at Kinhaven Music School Weston’s Kinhaven Music School offers intensive summer education in classical music for juniors and adults. For more than 30 years, the school has cultivated music-making experiences in which shared learning, mutual support, friendship, and community are always present. This joyful philosophy is reflected in the faculty and student concert series, which light up summer weekends. kinhaven.org October — Weston Antiques Show Outstanding antique dealers gather in Weston at the peak of foliage season. Weary shoppers and theatre-goers will appreciate a respite at the Inn at Weston or the Apple Knoll Inn. The Inn at Weston is within walking distance from the green, where gracious guestrooms, romance, and a candlelit dining room unite for a delightful escape. Rolling conservation land and sweeping views of the West River Valley provides the backdrop for the Apple Knoll Inn, a 1830s farmhouse about ½ mile from Weston’s center. Just beyond town at the edge of the Green Mountain National Forest, the Benedictine Monks of Weston Priory welcome the public for daily prayer, and offer adult guesthouse accommodations. Weston is bustling compared to Andover, home to artisans, small working farms, and soothing open countryside. The changing face of Vermont farming is reflected in a drive through Andover; small dairy farms persist along with fruit and vegetable crops, sustainable and renewable energy products, and wholesale livestock operations. Okemo Mountain Resort is a four-season playground that built its reputation for quality and superior guest service as a winter destination for skiers and snowboarders. Originally a small community-run ski hill, Okemo began to blossom in 1982 under the ownership of Tim and Diane Mueller. Creating “The Okemo Difference consistently earns the resort accolades and awards for snow quality, grooming, terrain parks, family programs, slopeside lodging, resort dining, and some of the best guest service in the East. In addition to an on-snow lineup of family fun, Okemo offers a variety of activities including ice skating, snowshoeing, tubing, a pool and fitness center, spa services, and family

events and activities. Two 18-hole championship golf courses highlight the warm-weather offerings. The resort’s Adventure Zone includes an all-season mountain coaster, zipline tours, mini golf, disc golf, trampoline bungee jumping, a climbing wall, the Amp Energy Big Air Bag, Segway Personal Transport tours, and a self-guided treetop challenge course. Okemo’s culinary offerings are top-notch with a focus on fresh, locally produced ingredients for a unique farm-to-table dining experience. Okemo’s Coleman Brook Tavern is a Wine Spectator Best of Award winner. Okemo is the ideal hub from which to launch a New England adventure at any time of the year. THINGS TO DO

T

he seasons paint the Okemo Valley with outdoor opportunity. Winter trails renew to verdant paths, teasing you to trade your skis and snowshoes for bicycle tires and hiking boots. Snowmobile Vermont will take you on a custom tour; Mountainview Ranch will lead you down the path for a four-legged sunset ride. Exchange your ice skates for canoes, kayaks, and fishing poles, but keep those blades at hand, as the seasons change quickly. Slopeside, the Okemo Adventure Zone is open all year to thrill seekers to jump, bounce, and fly with the mountain coaster, AMP big air bag, bungee trampoline, zipline, and the newest addition, the “Haulback Challenge” aerial ropes course. Warmer temperatures usher in additional activities at the resort, including mountainside Segway tours, disc and mini-golf, and a climbing wall. If bent grass greens, tees, and fairways are your bag, the nearby Okemo Valley Golf Club is one of the best public courses in Vermont.

42 Okemo Valley Regional Guide

Discover a new perspective through the vibrant Okemo Valley music and arts community. The Chaffee Arts Center features exhibitions, lectures, and adult and children’s workshops including painting, drawing, felting, weaving, writing, and more. Fletcher Farm School hosts over 200 arts and crafts courses year ‘round for adults and young artists in fiber arts, stained glass, jewelry, wood, photography, quilting and fabrics, and decorative arts. In warmer months, browse the work of local artisans at craft fairs and festivals, and bring home a one-of-a-kind find. In all seasons, find inspiration in an array of art studios, galleries, and antique stores, as well as unique boutiques with a broad range of tucked away treasures. Ready for the final run through? Find your seat at the Weston Playhouse. Vermont’s oldest professional theatre company presents musicals and dramas throughout the summer season; the 2014 lineup features “A Chorus Line” among others. The Playhouse also presents opera, juried arts and crafts shows, and special events and concerts throughout the balance of the year.

T

he Okemo Valley’s shops and workshops reflect the essence of our region’s people: creative, authentic, and inextricably tied to the beauty of our hills and valleys. At times you will find that the connection is overt, such as the playful frames, mirrors, tables, candle holders and other home decor from FrameItInSkis, or inspired furniture and accessories from Chrisandra’s Home Showcase Design Center where Vermont is expressed in a variety of styles. Clear Lake Furniture’s maple Coolidge Rocker is pocked by sap tap holes, a reflection of the trees’ original role in the working land.

Take Home the Ingenuity & Passion of Vermont Depot Street Gallery is home to the Silver Spoon studio, creating functional artwork from recycled antique silverware. Browse unique gifts from more than 120 crafters and then pop in next door at the Wine and Cheese Depot to choose from an extensive selection of local and imported wines, indulgent snacks, and specialty food. If hops are more up your alley, check out Brewfest Beverage for Vermont’s legendary beers as well as fine wine and liquor. Express your own inspiration. If you love needlework, visit Six Loose Ladies for local Alpaca, Shetland, and Icelandic yarn and fiber in tones that reflect the warmth and vibrancy of summer and fall, winter’s brisk nature, and spring’s verve. Observe the seasons from the rockers on the porch of the Vermont Country Store, which has remained the same since the Orton family opened its doors in 1945. Purveyors of the “practical and hard-to-find,” explore the Orton family’s legacy and take a trip down memory lane on creaky floors with floor-to-rafter stock. Shopping in the Okemo Valley is a fun and eclectic way to experience Vermonters’ ingenuity and passions. Our hearts and doors are open. A visit to Vermont is not complete without a shopping stop… or two.

Discover Sam’s Steakhouse in Ludlow, renowned for its prime, all natural, dry-aged beef.

T

oday’s American steak houses vary greatly in their menu options, designs and cooking styles. Considered a fine yet casual dining atmosphere, a Steakhouse is one of the most luxurious American dining experiences. Dry-aged beef is how beef was aged until wet aging became the predominant process in the mid 1980’s. Over time as the beef ages openly, exposed to the elements inside the cooler, the beef’s enzymes break down and tenderize the meat giving it a unique flavor and ensuring utmost tenderness. If you’ve never tasted a dry-aged steak, a visit to Sam’s provides the perfect opportunity.

A steakhouse is only as good as it’s meat – which is Sam’s secret to success. Since 2000, under the skillful helm of Executive Chef Pat Norton, Sam’s menu is renowned for its prime, all natural, dry-aged beef exclusively from Brandt Beef. This partnership allows Sam’s to prepare and serve only the finest meats from animals raised humanely, sustainably and without the use of hormones and antibiotics. “It’s our mission to deliver the best available product to our guests and as a provider, Brandt Beef is second to none.” says Pat. “ As Executive Chef, the most important aspect of my job at Sam’s is the quality of our food. The satisfaction I get from pleasing the customer is a rewarding experience for me – and the quality of our meat helps us please people.” In addition to Sam’s natural beef offering, the menu showcases signature entrees and classic favorites. You’ll find fresh and creative seafood presentations made possible through the relationship Sam’s has with Black River Produce. Everything in the Salad and Bread Bar is homemade using as much local and organic produce as possible. The bread is baked in house and the chefs create the salads in the kitchen. The homemade salad and bread bar is a popular, delicious and specialty feature.

The satisfaction I get from pleasing the customer is a rewarding experience for me — and the quality of our meat helps us please people. Executive Chef, Pat Norton

“The beauty about Sam’s is its simplicity, and I think that’s why people come back”, says Owner Paul Olson. “Sam’s success is made possible by a team effort. We get excited about an idea and we feed off each other. This is a high energy atmosphere and we are all about the guest experience.” Sam’s strives to offer their guests a high quality, consistent product. The extensive wine list and Lounge menu all contribute to Sam’s offerings. Experience Sam’s Steakhouse in Ludlow, Vermont. You won’t be disappointed. Paul, Pat and the crew look forward to seeing you soon!

From the time you set foot in the door at The Wheelhouse Restaurant, you’ll delight in feeling as if you’ve been transported directly to the coast of Maine. Extraordinary attention has been paid to authentically reproducing the rocky coast’s feel, from the Wharf deck, the locals’ favorite, for outdoor dining includes lighting straight from the old pier, old-style pilings and ropes, buoys, lobster traps and more. Not a detail has been overlooked. There’s even a Tiki Hut where food is prepared by very personable chefs from 11am - 8:30 pm daily. On the road and can’t dine in? No problem! Take home live Maine lobster or choose from a huge variety of fresh seafood delivered daily straight from the coast. Call ahead and Bill or crew will even deliver it “dockside!” The only thing missing is the sound of crashing waves — but Bill is probably already working on that!

I

f fresh seafood is what you crave, Bill Austin’s Lobster Pound is an island oasis! With the FRESHEST selection of 30 of your favorites, this fresh seafood market has sourced the best scallops, mussels, crabmeat, shrimp, sole, sea bass and rainbow trout, and has over 1,000 pounds of live Maine lobster and so much more. To top it off, they make the most delicious lobster rolls and homemade ‘chowda’ daily. Who says you need to hit the surf to get the best seafood? Blymey!

modest offering of “36 Items You Can Buy Now” would grow into an enduring American company loved by customers from around the world.

For over 65 years, The Vermont Country Store has delighted millions of customers with a wondrous array of treasured products and practical and hard-to-find goods that not only evoke memories of a simpler time, but transport our customers back—through all five senses—to those special places held dear in their hearts.

Vrest, a frugal Yankee at heart, founded The Vermont Country Store with an unwavering commitment to sourcing products that are useful, work, and make sense. He also wanted to create a place where people from all walks of life could experience the real flavor of the living past and a vanishing way of rural life in America. Mildred managed the finances and endeared herself to hungry customers by offering homemade ham sandwiches served on stone-ground wheat bread baked in her own wood stove.

It all started back in 1945, when Vrest and Mildred Orton hand-printed and mailed their first catalog to 1,000 people on their Christmas card list. Although quite the ambitious endeavor, they had no idea their

A

true

Vermont Experience

fter dinner one evening, a travel writer introduced herself to Inn at Weathersfield owners Marilee and Richard Spanjian. She was staying at Okemo and was thrilled to find the inn only 20 minutes away. Like many guests, she’d read the online reviews and articles in food and travel magazines. “Dinner surpassed my expectations”, she said, “but the inn is so much more. You offer the true Vermont experience.” The experience starts at the road.
