DANS LA CHALEUR DE LA NUIT
Le double Championnat du Monde à Bahreïn (OK et Junior) nous a fait vibrer grâce à des courses intenses et spectaculaires, tout particulièrement à l'occasion des finales qui ont consacré l'Espagnol Pedro Hiltbrand et le Français Victor Martins chez les plus jeunes. Les caractéristiques du circuit de Sakhir ne sont pas étrangères à ce phénomène. Rapide, le tracé favorise l'aspiration, les dépassements et donc le suspense. Un pilote pouvait facilement passer de la 1ère à la 5e place en un seul virage, avant de récupérer le leadership moins de trois tours plus tard. C'est ce qui est arrivé à Victor Martins, qui a ensuite su tenir sa place pour devenir le nouveau Champion du Monde OK-Junior devant l'Espagnol David Vidales. Un autre Français, Théo Pourchaire, a gagné de justesse sa place dans le top-3, dans une catégorie forte de 92 engagés ! En OK, Pedro Hiltbrand a parachevé son oeuvre en 2016: déjà titré au Championnat d'Europe et à la Super Coupe Internationale de KZ2, il a tout donné pour surprendre Karol Basz à moins de cinq tours de l'arrivée et lui succéder au palmarès du Championnat du Monde. Sous les projecteurs, Felice Tiene les a rejoints sur le podium.
IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT
The double World Championship in Bahrain (OK and Junior) provided a thrilling weekend for everybody thanks to closely-fought spectacular races, in particular in the finals in which Spaniard Pedro Hiltbrand and Frenchman Victor Martins won the titles awarded to the youngest drivers. The characteristics of the Sakhir circuit played its part in generating this excitement as the very quick track helped slipstreaming and overtaking, which added to the suspense! These Kart World Championships were held in parallel to the final round of the World Endurance Championship (WEC) run on the adjacent circuit for cars, so overall it was a marvellous weekend of motor sport festivities. It was easy for a driver to drop from first to fifth place in just a single corner before regaining the leadership fewer than three laps later. This is what happened to Martins who then managed to hold on to first place to become the new OK-Junior World Champion in front of David Vidales from Spain. Another French driver, Théo Pourchaire, managed to make it into the top 3 in a category which attracted 92 entries! In OK, Hiltbrand rounded off his 2016 season on a high note after his victories in the European Championship and the KZ2 International Super Cup. With fewer than five laps to go to the chequered flag he went pedal to the metal and slipped past Karol Basz with a superb overtaking move when the latter wasn’t expecting it. Thus, he succeeded the Pole in the World Championship roll of honour. Felice Tiene shared the limelight with them on the podium.
