Living abroad and throughout Europe during the Cold War, Karl Braungart obtained practical experience in military intelligence. His knowledge of diplomatic strategies and espionage tactics improved as a result of that experience. He has spent the last few decades learning about the social movements and politics of the Middle East. Combining these skills, he writes novels that center on strategies used by Iranian, Iraqi, and Russian spies to obtain intelligence for their respective nations.
