Remembering the Reason
By My Side By Jesse S. Lyons (Delta Alpha–Western Carolina ‘98) OUR VALUES BRING US TOGETHER AS A brotherhood and Order at the local chapter. Gentility, manifested clearly as reverence for woman, is of particular import. This personal consideration certainly extends beyond your college days. There is no better way to remember the reason than to have it exemplified in a wonderful example of lifetime commitment.
In May, the National Administrative Office at Mulbe ry Hill received an online request for sheet music of our song, “Kappa Alpha Rose.” This is fairly common when members are getting married. Many of you reading this may remember having “the Rose” song sung at your wedding. This request, however, was not for an upcoming wedding. Rather, Dr. Reuel Hamilton, DMD, was re-learning the music. Reuel Hamilton, DMD, (Beta Omicron– Louisville ’53) and wife Virginia Satterly Hamilton, herself a sorority woman—Sigma Kappa, University of Louisville—were married on June 9, 1956. Six decades of marital bliss later, they held a celebration reception for friends and family on June 5, 2016, at St. James Episcopal Church in Marietta, Georgia. Reuel punctuated the celebration that day by singing “Kappa Alpha Rose” for his 60-year bride. For this occasion, he altered the words just a bit and was happy to provide his second verse: Those college days are memories now, but she is mine e’er true. For 60 years I’ve loved her, through days both bright and blue. She’s the greatest joy I’ve ever known. I’ll keep her by my side. For my dear sweet KA sweetheart’s still my Kappa Alpha bride. This is one brother who has kept his obligations both to KA and his Rose, for his life.
