Project Description The studio is part of a larger research exploring the ways in which one can usefully learn from existing buildings and how those find their way into new buildings. In this context my research was centred on Loos’ Villa Moller in Vienna. The qualities of spatial organisation, juxtaposition of contrasts and the theatricality of architectural experience in Villa Moller were explored in the design of an experimental theatre complex imbibing design principles and attitudes from the oeuvre of Loos.
Spaces as stages The spaces of the interior, of different spatial qualities, behave both as a stage hosting a particular activity and as a tribune to look onto the other spaces.
Thresholds as ‘Prosceniums’ The thresholds frame the different spaces making each a setting to look into and a setting to look out from.
Thresholds as emergence The thresholds as zones of transition highlight the moment of emergence onto a space like actors onto a stage.

The building as stage The interior spaces also double as architectural sets where the theatrical acts can unfold throughout the different spaces of the interior. The entire building becomes the stage and the roles of audience-actor, stage-tribune are constantly inverted. The built space is not just a neutral backdrop. A

The building as actor The building at the centre of the suburban context becomes an object to look at. The large transparent openings of the facade reveal the interior and the activities that unfold within them. From the outside, the interior is revealed as a stage and the theatre-goers become actors in architectural space. Conversely, the building becomes a vantage point from which to look onto the suburban context.
The building as a spectacle The external shell of the building also behaves as a proscenium revealing the interior of the building. The building and its contents become a spectacle to watch and engages the surrounding context. The building is an object to look at, an anchor to the context, a tribune to observe the surroundings from within and is a backdrop to the amphitheatre.

Project Description The studio is an enquiry into Eindhoven’s contemporary architectural culture by the means of an exhibition. The studio has been both an exploration of alternate modes of architectural scholarship and of the ways architectural ideas can be communicated to a broader audience.

Design as curatorial tool Three projects each from the eight offices are arranged in a matrix. The position of a particular project suggests a theme specific to the architectural aspect the project engages in and helps draw comparison with the other projects in the same theme. The result is an ‘urban spatial environment’, of tables and portals depending on the displayed content that allows the viewers the freedom to construct their own experience and views.
Research and Curation Involved the archival analysis of the offices, project selection and defining the exhibition content through large informal discussions.
Design and Construction Involved the procurement of materials from sponsors, processing and production of parts and the final arrangement of the content.
Engagement With the students through discussions with the architects of the displayed firms and with the public through interviews and an instagram competition on the city’s architecture.

Project Description The studio explores the nature of descriptions in general and the nature of architecture as a descriptive tool in ordering the narration of our built environment. In the project I explored the possibility of using the built environment as a tool to retain and evoke temporal experiences such as those experienced in a weekly market.
Architecture as a descriptive tool In Indian miniature paintings, architecture becomes a tool that organises the individual stories into a coherent narration. Similarly, the ‘matrix’ is a system of constructed ruins to which the temporary market attaches. In the market’s presence, it gives a physical organisational structure to the market while also shaping the overall experience.
Architecture as a mimetic tool The matrix becomes a mimetic remanent of the organisational structure of the market and an evocative reminder of its experience. The ‘constructed ruins’ are a translation of the temporal experience of a marketplace into a physical structure. This is done by translating the different effects of overlapping frames through the different stalls that can be experienced in a marketplace into a physical place.

Project Description In the design for a large educational campus with residential facilities for students, staff and their family, my exploration was centered on the development of an architectural expression of communion for different programs, educational and residential, specific to a flat site with a hotarid climate.

Two types of dwelling - open and refuge The masterplan splits the site into two: the academic programs are placed on an open terrain while the residential zones find refuge in a wooded landscape. Each of these zones revolve around their centres: a library in the case of the academic functions, a wetland and a park in the case of the residences and a urban plaza where the two zones meet.

Built expression from context The academic block is a place of encounter made of terraces, courtyards and plazas that are protected from the hot arid climate by the deep overhangs. These overhangs and terraces also define the overall expression of the building and integrate it to the flat landscape of the site.

The Tour The tour of Italy is the most ellaborate example within my personal agenda of travelling to learn from architecture and different cultures. Travelling to learn has consistently been a necessary supplement to my architectural training and follows the personal quest of identifying good architectural values and principles.
Personally, sketching is a way of visual note-taking. Drawing combined with writing also grant me the time to observe, abstract and reconceptualise ideas while recording the architectural experience.
