Welcome to Kanimbla Welcome to Kanimbla
Welcome to Kanimbla’s 15th annual sale. As many will have noticed we have moved from a Spring sale to an Autumn date, what this has enabled us to do is to offer the bulls at a younger age while still being mature and ready to work, to guarantee this all bulls will have to pass a semen morphology test and full veterinary inspection to ensure they have reached sexual maturity and are in elite working order. The females we have on offer have all been preg tested safe in calf to bulls that we believe are new and exciting young sires. We are really impressed with this year’s line of bulls and believe they offer the industry the quality it deserves and requires, we still maintain our focus heavily on carcass, structure, udder shape and calving ease. Please feel free to contact us to discuss any of the lots in this sale or how we can help you with your requirements. Buying and Caring for a New Bull Before buying a bull, it is best to answer a couple of questions: Price: Ideally you should spend around 8 to 10 times what your weaners average if you are to maintain your current herd standard. If you want to lift performance, then you may need to spend more. Selection: Arriving at the sale, it is best to walk through all the lots and cross off all the bulls that you don’t like based on a visual inspection. After this elimination, do the same exercise and mark the bulls that you like and note the reasons why. Try to mark more than you need. After this, look at the selected bulls EBVs and Indices. There is a guide to these on page 5 of the catalogue. Your agent or Kanimbla will also be happy to assist. At this stage you may be able to place the bulls in order of desirability and put a price on them that you would be happy to pay. Aims: Before you get to the sale, you will probably have a good idea of the strengths and weaknesses in your herd. Therefore select the bulls that have strengths in the areas that you have weaknesses in. Don’t forget that the bull is only half the answer so you may need to select an animal whose strengths may be a bit higher than what you want to end up with. Where you are looking at fixing a number of traits, one bull may not be the entire solution and it may take a couple of generations for you to get to where you want to be. Transit Insurance: Delivery – we are happy to help organise delivery of your new purchase. We recommend that you insure your purchases - an insurance agent will be in attendance on the day. Transit insurance is not a replacement for more comprehensive insurance. At home: Once you have bought the bull, you will be taking him away from his mates and placing him in a new environment. This can be stressful for the bull. To minimise this stress, the following could be done: " Try to have delivery occur during daylight. This is not always achievable. " It is best that the bull be unloaded into a small paddock with some older cows which ideally should be pregnant. These cows could also be in an adjacent paddock. " Food and water should be available. " For biosecurity reasons, you may wish to keep the bull isolated from the rest of the farm for several days. The sale agents shall ensure that the bull’s NLIS is transferred to your PIC.

4 - ANNUAL BULL AND FEMALE SALE
Breedplan - A General Introduction Breedplan
- Only 2018 Hereford Group Breedplan EBVs with Accuracy can be validly compared between Hereford herds. Accuracies are important and improve as more performance information becomes available.
Traits Observed indicates those traits that have been recorded and contributing to determining the EBVs for an animal. These appear directly below the EBVs of an animal.
Calving Calving ease DIR estimates the genetic differences between animals in the ability of calves from 2 year old heifers to be delivered without assistance. Calving ease DTRS estimates the genetic differences between animals in the ability of 2 year old daughters to calve without assistance. Gestation length estimates the genetic differences between animals in the number of days from the conception to birth. Birth EBVs based on calf weights (kgs) at birth adjusted for dam age. Smaller EBVs are more favourable. Growth Milk EBVs (kg) estimate an animal's milking ability. For sires, this estimates the maternal effect his daughters will have on the 200-day weight of progeny. This EBV is calculated by partitioning the difference in the 200-day weight of calves into growth and milk components. Larger (+) 200 Day Milk EBVs are generally more favourable. 200, 400 & 600: Growth EBVs (kg) calculated from weights of calves taken at various times. The values are adjusted to 200, 400 or 600. The best estimate of an animal’s genetic merit for growth at that age. Fertility SS: Scrotal Size EBVs (cm) indicates male fertility for semen and quantity. Higher (+) EBVs indicate higher fertility. SS is also positively linked with female fertility. Carcase BREEDPLAN combines both live animal ultrasound scanning information with abattoir chiller carcase data to calculate EBVs that provide information
regarding the genetic differences in carcase composition between animals in a standard 300 kg carcase. CW: Carcase Weight EBVs (kg) estimates the genetic differences between animals in hot standard carcase weight (as defined by AusMEAT) at 650 days of age. EMA: Eye Muscle Area EBVs (cm2) estimates genetic differences between animals in eye muscle area at 12/13th rib site in a 300kg steer carcase. Larger, more positive, EMA EBVs indicate better muscling. Rib and Rump: These Fat EBVs (mm) estimate genetic differences between animals in fat depth at the 12/13th rib site and the P8 rump site in a 300kg steer carcase. More positive EBVs indicate more subcutaneous fat and earlier maturity. Retail: Retail Beef Yield EBVs (%) estimates genetic differences between animals in boned out retail beef yield in a 300kg steer carcase. A more positive, RBY EBV indicates higher percentage yield. IMF: Intramuscular Fat EBVs (%) estimates genetic differences between animals in intramuscular fat (marbling) at the 12/13 rib site in a 300kg carcase. Depending on the target markets, larger, more positive, IMF EBVs are generally more favourable. DOC: expressed as differences in the % of progeny that will be scored with an acceptable temperament – higher is better. Australian Hereford Selection Indexes Each selection index describes a different production/market scenario and relates to a typical, self-replacing Hereford herd in temperate Australia targeting the following specifications: Southern Self-replacing Index Northern Self-replacing Index Southern Baldy Maternal Index and Northern Baldy Terminal. Because it relies upon a number of assumptions that will not reflect all herds, it should be used very carefully. Please ask for additional information or visit www.herefordsaustralia.com.au.
The following are examples of which EBVs may be useful in selecting bulls: Terminal sire – Birth, Growth and Carcase Retain females – as above plus Milk and Fertility
