Let’s discover a bit more about each volunteer’s country ! 6

Romania ! (România) Bună ziua !

7

Romania is a country located in Southern Europe, in the North of the Balkan Peninsula. It has an area of 238,391 km2 and the borders are: Ukraine to the north and east; the Black Sea and Moldavia to the east; Bulgaria to the south; Serbia and Hungary from south-west to west.

There is evidence that Romania has been inhabited since about 40,000 years ago. A first proof of this is the discovery of the cave with bones in the region of Banat, where the remains of Europe's oldest modern man (35,000-40,500 years ago) were found.

Romania has a tricolor flag which has colors arranged in vertical strips of equal size in the following order: blue, yellow, red and it dates of the first half of the nineteenth century. Each color is considered a symbol. Thus, blue is associated with the notion of "Liberty" (blue sky), the yellow of "Justice" (yellow of the fields) and red is associated with the word "fraternity" (red blood).

8

The Romanian national currency is the "leu" (plural "lei"), which has the subdivision the "ban". Romania is considered a country of the Danubian-Pontic Carpathians because it has shaped the territory according to the form of the Carpathians and is located on the bottom of the Danube which has the exit to the Black Sea. The relief of Romania is harmoniously distributed. Thus, the mountains occupy 31%, the hills and plateaus 33% and the palines 36%.

The climate is continental temperate and has slight external influences (Oceanic and Mediterranean). This type of climate creates the 4 seasons: spring, summer, autumn and winter. The average annual temperatures exceed 11 ° C in the south and fall below 0 ° C on the highest peaks.

9

In 2016, according to the National Institute of Statistics, Romania had a population of 22,241,718 inhabitants. It is composed of Romanians (89.5%), Hungarians (7.1%), Romms (1.75%), the rest are Germans, Ukrainians, Russians, Turks, Lipovans, Tartars. Among the most popular tourist attractions in Romania are: Bran Castle, also known as "Dracula Castle", Transfagarasan and Transalpina Roads, Corvin-Huniazilor Castle, the medieval city of Sighisoara. In addition, in Romania there are other areas with high tourism potential. The capital of Romania, Bucharest, is the largest industrial center of the country. Also known as "Petit Paris", is one of the main tourist centers of Romania.

10

Here, we find many sites of historical interest, which impress, combining all the architectural styles: the Romanian Athenaeum, the Village Museum, the Arch of Triumph, the National Museum of Art of Romania, Natural History museum "Grigore Antipa", National History Museum, Botanical Garden, Stavropoleos Church, Manuc House (Hanul lui Manuc). The most important tourist attraction is the Parliament Palace in Bucharest or the House of People, which is the second largest building in the world after the Pentagon and it has six thousand rooms.

Another region with high tourism potential is Maramures (in the north-west), with unique folk and ethnographic values in the country. The main points of interest in this area are: the Merry Cemetery, wooden churches - unique in the world, the Sighet Memorial which has been named by the Council of Europe among the top three places of European culture of memorials, alongside the memorial in Auschwitz and the one of Peace in Normandy.

France ! (La République Française) Bonjour ! 17

France, officially French Republic, French France or République Française, country of northwestern Europe. Historically and culturally among the most important nations in the Western world, France has also played a highly significant role in international affairs, with former colonies in every corner of the globe.

Bounded by the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea, the Alps and the Pyrenees, France has long provided a geographic, economic, and linguistic bridge joining northern and southern Europe. It is Europe’s most important agricultural producer and one of the world’s leading industrial powers.

18

Among France’s major cities are Lyon, located along an ancient Rhône valley trade route linking the North Sea and the Mediterranean; Marseille, a multiethnic port on the Mediterranean founded as an entrepôt for Greek and Carthaginian traders in the 6th century BCE; Nantes, an industrial centre and deepwater harbour along the Atlantic coast; and Bordeaux, located in southwestern France along the Garonne River. France is among the globe’s oldest nations, the product of an alliance of duchies and principalities under a single ruler in the Middle Ages. Today, as in that era, central authority is vested in the state, even though a measure of autonomy has been granted to the country’s régions in recent decades.

19

The French landscape, for the most part, is composed of relatively low-lying plains, plateaus, and older mountain blocks, or massifs. This pattern clearly predominates over that of the younger, high ranges, such as the Alps and the Pyrenees. The diversity of the land is typical of Continental Europe.

20

Three main geologic regions are distinguishable: the skeletal remains of ancient mountains that make up the Hercynian massifs; the northern and western plains; and the higher young fold mountains in the south and southeast, including the Alps and the Pyrenees, with their attendant narrow plains.

Luxembourg ! (Lëtzebuerg) Hallo !

27

Luxembourg, country in northwestern Europe. One of the world’s smallest countries, it is bordered by Belgium on the west and north, France on the south, and Germany on the northeast and east. Luxembourg has come under the control of many states and ruling houses in its long history, but it has been a separate, if not always autonomous, political unit since the 10th century.

28

The ancient Saxon name of its capital city, Lucilinburhuc (“Little Fortress”), symbolized its strategic position as “the Gibraltar of the north,” astride a major military route linking Germanic and Frankish territories. Luxembourg is a point of contact between the Germanicand Romance-language communities of Europe, and three languages are regularly employed in the grand duchy itself: Luxembourgish, German, and French. The peoples of Luxembourg and their languages reflect the grand duchy’s common interests and close historical relations with its neighbours.

29

In the 20th century Luxembourg became a founding member of several international economic organizations. Perhaps most importantly, the grand duchy was an original member of the Benelux Economic Union (1944), which linked its economic life with that of the Netherlands and of Belgium and would subsequently form the core of the European Economic Community (EEC; ultimately succeeded by the European Union).

Austria ! (Österreich)

Hallo !

36

Austria, largely mountainous landlocked country of southcentral Europe. Together with Switzerland, it forms what has been characterized as the neutral core of Europe, notwithstanding Austria’s full membership since 1995 in the supranational European Union (EU).

37

A great part of Austria’s prominence can be attributed to its geographic position. It is at the centre of European traffic between east and west along the great Danubian trade route and between north and south through the magnificent Alpine passes, thus embedding the country within a variety of political and economic systems.

38

Mountains and forests give the Austrian landscape its character, although in the northeastern part of the country the Danube River winds between the eastern edge of the Alps and the hills of Bohemia and Moravia in its journey toward the Alföld, or Hungarian Plain. Vienna lies in the area where the Danube emerges from between the mountains into the drier plains.

39

Austria is a land of lakes, many of them a legacy of the Pleistocene Epoch (i.e., about 2,600,000 to about 11,700 years ago), during which glacial erosion scooped out mountain lakes in the central Alpine district, notably around the Salzkammergut. The largest lakes—lying partly in the territory of neighbouring countries—are Lake Constance (Bodensee) in the west and the marshy Neusiedler Lake (Neusiedlersee) in the east.
