Kanata to walk the cross Steve Dool steve.dool@metroland.com
EMC news - This Good Friday will mark the 28th anniversary of the annual Walk of the Cross event in Kanata. The walk starts at noon, Friday March 29, at St. Paul Anglican Church, 20 Young Rd. It will have stops at the Kakulu Medical Centre, Castlefrank Rd, Holy Redeemer Catholic School, 75 McCurdy Dr., and Trinity Presbyterian Church 110 McCurdy Dr., before returning to St. Paul. “It’s an important community event that has become a tradition, said event organizer Mark Buccino. “It’s an important day for our faith, we all have one thing in common on that day.” This is Buccino’s second year organizing the event and he has been participating since he was 10 years old. The ceremony signifies the Passion of Christ and helps prepare parishioners for Easter. Every year, a different church hosts the event rain or shine and the walk features the same cross provided in 1985 by Tom Flood, a former organizer of the event. The cross weighs about 57 kilograms and is 4.8 metres long by 2.4 metres wide. People take turns carrying the cross between destinations in groups of about 10 and significant scriptures are read at

This year, Glen Cairn United Church will host the event and Father John Bridges, pastor of St. Paul Anglican Church, will start the event with a short welcoming ceremony. The walk is open to all denominations and offers Kana-

Last year, more than 200 people took part in the Walk of the Cross. “It’s an ecumenical event and a chance for all Christians to come together in worship,” said Buccino. EMC news - The Canada Pension Plan has embarked on a series of changes that may cause you to rethink when to begin receiving your CPP pension benefits. The amendments are intended to provide more financial flexibility depending on each individual’s chosen retirement path and to encourage Canadians to work longer.. That’s why these changes provide greater incentives for those willing to work past the traditional retirement age and significant reductions for those taking CPP benefits before age 65. Some of the changes are: • The work cessation rule has been eliminated. Now, starting at age 60, you can continue working and still receive CPP benefits. • The earnings drop-out provision has been changed. Under the old rules, if you retired at age 65, you could drop out seven of your lowest earning years from age 18 to 65 when you were eligible to contribute to CPP. Now, that drop-out period has increased to 7.5 years and will increase again, to eight years, in 2014.
