Blanch Akkerman of Eden Prairie, originally from Mora, died in her sleep on Saturday, Feb. 27, 2016 at the Castle Ridge Care Center in Eden Prairie. She was 98 years old. She was born Dec, 16, 1917 in Washburn, N.D., the daughter of Clarence and E Edith Sundstrom. She had ffour brothers and three sistters. Blanch was united in marrriage to her first husband, W Walter H. Spangberg in 1936. T They lived on the Spangberg ffamily farm near Wilton, N N.D. where their first two c children, James and Edith, w were born. At that time, the ffamily attended Sunne Luttheran Church in Wilton. In 1939, they moved to Mora where they farmed for about a year. Their second two children, Allen and Rodney, were born there. In 1942, the family moved to Minneapolis, where they lived until Walter died in 1962. For much of that time, while raising her children, she worked at the Kickernick and Munsingwear sewing factories and in the lab at Northwestern Hospital. She enjoyed music and taught herself to play the piano/electric organ. She also enjoyed crocheting and sewing. The family lived happily near Loring Park, where they enjoyed activities such as family outings and band concerts in the park. They were members of Central Lutheran Church. After Walter died, she moved back to Mora where she met and married Oltman Akkerman, known by most of their friends as Al. They lived on Fish Lake, south of Mora. She and Al were active in the Mora American Legion and enjoyed playing Santa and Mrs. Claus. They also sang in the choir at the Brunswick Lutheran Church. After Al died in 1995, she moved to Park Forest apartments in Mora and lived there until moving to an assisted living facility in Cambridge. Due to health reasons, she then moved to Castle Ridge Care Center in Eden Prairie. Blanch was preceded in death by first husband, Walter Spangberg; second husband, Oltman Akkerman; parents, Clarence and Edith Sundstrom; sister, Lillian Reese; brothers, Wayne, Harold, William and Leland Sundstrom. She is survived by daughter, Edith (Gene) Moorhead of Plymouth; sons, Jim (Donna) Spangberg of Savage, Allen (Pat) Spangberg of Raleigh N.C. and Rodney Spangberg (special friend, Pelusa) of Chile, South America; four grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; sisters, Norma Carson and Helen Carson and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, March 7, 2016 at the Akkerman-Ingebrand Funeral Home in Mora. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. James Adrian Nordstrom of South Haven, died Monday, Feb. 22, 2016, at his residence. He was 44 years old. He was born on March 3, 1971, in Mora to Robert and Marie (Marchessault) Nordstrom. He grew up in Mora where he was baptized and later confirmed in tthe Catholic faith. He enjoyed playing hocke ey, hunting, fishing and m motorcycling. He graduated ffrom Mora High School in 11989 and then continued his e education by attending St. C Cloud Technical College for d drafting. On May 7, 1994 he was u united in marriage to Amy P Peikert at the Bethlehem Luttheran Church in St, Cloud. T Together they made their h home in St. Cloud until 1996 w when they moved to a farm n near South Haven. He was employed at Ailie Construction in Dassel for 20 years as a concrete finisher. He loved to spend time on the lake fishing, attending swappers meets and golfing. He was a hardworking man who enjoyed doing things with his hands, from making things out of wood to working on the farm. He enjoyed the time he could spend with his family and especially enjoyed his grandchildren. He also had a great sense of humor, always made you laugh and was very easy-going. He was preceded in death by his twin infant babies, Breanne and Kyle an infant baby girl, Paige; father, Robert Nordstrom when he was four and stepfather, Roy Larson; paternal grandparents and maternal grandparents. He is survived by wife, Amy Nordstrom of South Haven; children, Cecilia (Jaibyne Braatz) Nordstrom of Dassel, Tarren (Bethany Grangroth) Nordstrom of Washington, Abigail Nordstrom of South Haven, and Jordan Nordstrom of South Haven; grandchildren, Haylin Nordstrom and Mavis Braatz and one expected grandchild; mother, Marie Larson Nordstrom of Mora; siblings, Paul (Denise) Nordstrom of Mora, Mary (Joe) Gruber of St. Paul, Cathy (Chuck) Cole of Mora, Joe (Susie) Nordstrom of Eden Prairie, Chuck (Ranel) Nordstrom of Savage, Suzy (Mike) Swedin of Milaca, Richard (Jackie) Nordstrom of Mora and John (Shari) Nordstrom of Cold Spring and several nieces, nephews and other relatives. A memorial service was held on Saturday, Feb. 27, 2016, at the Johnson Funeral Home Chapel in Dassel. Fr. Joseph A. Steinbeisser officiated at the service. The interment of the urn will be held at a later date at the St Mary’s Catholic Church Cemetery in Mora.
Olga Ann (Slavic) Black of Clearbrook, Minn. died on Tuesday, Feb. 9, 2016 at the Good Samaritan Center in Clearbrook. She was 89 years old. She was born Feb. 27, 1926 in Tollerburg, Colo. She was raised as a coal miner’s daughter in Morley, a coal m mining town, currently a g ghost town in Colorado. She graduated from Trini idad High School in 1945 w where she was in the choir f four years. After gradufor a ation, she took up residence w with the nuns in Denver, C Colo. until she was united i marriage to Clark Newell in B Black on Oct. 30, 1948. She moved to Ogilvie with her husband and was a devoted wife and mother. They had a brief residence in Kansas then moved to Clearbrook where she lived and started raising her children. She moved to Little Falls where she continued to be a devoted wife, a loving mother, grandmother and friend. During her time in Little Falls, she was in the Women’s Moose Club Auxiliary and was an active Moose Club, and CB Club member. She worked and retired after 20 years, as a dedicated nursing assistant at the Lutheran Senior Citizens. After retirement, she moved to Akeley and they became snowbirds living in Mesa and Apache Junction, Ariz. during the winter months. Her last place of residence was at Good Samaritan’s Home in Clearbrook for the last nine years of her 89 beautiful years of life. She had a heart of gold and was a very giving person. She always looked for the good in people and would always offer to help. She was a hard worker but she also loved to have fun and was quite the jokester. She loved to dance, especially to the beat of some favorites like Elvis Presley. In her spare time, she loved to paint or draw and was dedicated to her faith in Jesus Christ who called her home on the eve of Feb. 9, 2016, 18 days before her 90th birthday. She was proceeded in death by mother, Jennie Slavic; father, Louie Slavic; brother, Fleker Slavic; sisters, Alice Williams and Joshephine Slavic and husband, Clark Black. She is survived by daughters, Joyce (Harlow) Janssen, Kathy (Larry) Erickson, Jean (Kevin) Myrum and Karen Black; 15 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 5, 2016 at St. Phillip’s Catholic Church in Bemidji at 11 a.m. with a visitation one hour prior to the service at the church with Father Don Braukman officiating. Burial will be held at Camp Ripley, Minnesota Veterans Cemetery in Little Falls. The Cease Family Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements. Ann M. Rische Ann Marie Rische of Mora died on Monday, Feb. 29, 2016 at St. Clare Living Community in Mora. She was 74 years old. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, March 3, 2016 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Mora with Father Eugene Plaisted and Rita Clasemann officiating. Visitation will be on Wednesday, March 2, 2016 from 6 until 8 p.m. at Dresser-Methven Funeral Home in Mora as well as one hour prior to the service at the church. Ann Trongard Ann Trongard of Minnetonka, formerly of Mora, died on Sunday, Feb. 28, 2016 at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis. She was 76 years old. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, March 3 at 11 a.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Ogilvie with Rev. Marc Freiberg officiating. Memorial visitation will be held one hour prior to the service from 10 - 11 a.m. on Thursday at the church. Charles V. Peterson Charles Vernon Peterson of Mora, formerly of St. Paul, died on Wednesday, Feb. 24, 2016 at the St. Clare Living Community in Mora. He was 80 years old. He was born on Feb. 2, 1936 in Henning, to parents, Eric and Mary (Kline) Peterson. On Sept. 27, 1958, he was u united in marriage to Nanc cy Dolezal. He worked for 3M in St. P Paul for more than 20 years b before retiring in 1992. He was preceded in death b by his parents. He is survived by his wife o of 57 years, Nancy; children, T Timothy Peterson of Clarks G Grove, Jodi (Gregory) Alt of M Mora, Daniel (Brenda) Petterson of Hawaii, Kenneth (Mary) Peterson of Roseville, Jill (Michael) Trutwin of Lakeville; daughter-in-law, Tammie Peterson of Emerald, Wis.; grandchildren, David Peterson, Jacob Alt, Nick Trutwin, Andy Peterson, Jon Alt, Joe Alt, Ed Peterson, Nathan Peterson, Mark Peterson, Jessica Green and Rose Nelson; eight great-grandchildren; siblings, Ruth Hammer of Henning, Eleanor (Ralph) Westerman of Cocoa Beach, Fla., Shirley Solberg of Zion, Ill., Sharon Rowan of Arnold, Mo. and Jerome Peterson of Parkers Prairie; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
