More skiers enter Vasaloppet with consistent course, snow BY KIRSTEN FAURIE EDITOR@MORAMINN.COM

Temperatures were down but spirits were up this weekend Feb. 9-10 as the city of Mora hosted the annual Vasaloppet USA ski races. Skier registrations for the event were also up despite the cold temperatures. The races have been on a slow but steady re-bound from a dip in registrations. Vasaloppet race organizers attributed the dip to the inconsistent snow conditions; and credited their snow-making equipment and “snow farmer” volunteers for bringing registrations back up. About 820 racers finished the Saturday races, plus an additional 95 for Sunday events. SATURDAY RACES Race organizers delayed the start of Saturday’s races by one hour to allow temperatures to rise. By 11 a.m., the air temperature reached -4ºF when the first race of the day started.

Again, Matthew Liebsch of Orono was the first male finisher of the Vasa (54K) race making this his 10th consecutive win and the most consecutive race wins in Vasaloppet USA history. Liebsch said he continually returns for the Mora Vasaloppet because he loves the enthusiasm, volunteerism and support of the Mora community. “I love that course and I love the town,” he said. Josie Nelson, first female finisher of the Classic 42K race was easily the woman with the biggest smile at the finish. She glowingly professed her love of the race to the Kranskullas as she received her winner’s wreath. SUNDAY EVENTS Warmer temps near 10ºF were more welcoming for Sundays events, especially for children participating in the Miniloppet — with some no more than two years old crossing the finish line. Sunday events also included the Fat Vasa, Skijor and friendly spark races.

In 2018, the East Central Drug and Violent Offenders Task Force was involved in 355 investigations. During these investigations, the agents of the Task Force executed 57 search warrants and arrested 72 individuals for drug or violent crimes. The number of investigations has been on a slight downward trend since 2015. The East Central Drug and Violent Offenders Task Force is a multi-jurisdictional Violent Crime Enforcement Team made up by the four partnering counties of Chisago, Isanti, Kanabec and Pine. Throughout the 2018 year, the East Central Drug and Violent Offenders Task Force seized approximately 56.55 pounds of methamphetamine with a street value of over $735,150. Workforce education a little upside down

M

aking smart decisions in choosing education and career paths is in need of redefinition in the minds of parents, the curriculum of schools, business plans of employers and perceptions of the public. In high-school I took pre-calculus, but I struggle to properly measure or complete even the simplest of home projects. Don’t believe me? I hung a painting in my home upside down and was so exasperated at the end I just left it that way. (Before you ask: no, it is not just as simple as turning the picture in the frame.) It’s still there. When people Editor ask me why it’s upside down I Kirsten Faurie just respond with something philosophical, like, “If you are lki iin th walking the woods and no one can see the painting, does it still look upside down?” Taking a shop course may have given me some more practical skills than whatever I learned in pre-calc. It also might have taken one of my fingers. I guess we’ll never know. The Kanabec County Economic Development Authority hosted a compelling conference on Feb. 7 where experienced business people and educators discussed strategies to bridge the gap between the skills learned in school and the skills in high demand in the workforce. Our country really needs welders, machinists, electricians and nurses, but we are still pushing students toward four-year college degrees they may not need. I don’t regret the educational experience I chose or received. I love my career and wouldn’t change it. Yet taking on high debt for a (sometimes) low-wage job has put many of my generation in a tight financial spot. What is perceived as the “smart” move in education can be as upside down as the painting in my kitchen. During my high school years, the prevailing mentality was that if you had the grades to attend a four-year university, then you did. The truly smart move could be attending a trade school, or working in an apprenticeship program before ever leaving high school. To make that happen, schools and businesses need to work together to offer these types of opportunities and make sure students know all their options. Last week I was fortunate enough to attend the open house and ribbon cutting of the Mora High School’s new Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) classroom. The school, Pine Technical & Community College and St. Clare Living Community of Mora have come together to offer a select group of 10 senior students special training in nursing. Our schools are working hard to adjust education to give kids the skills and knowledge they need to be successful. As schools and businesses are trying to shift the stereotype of a 4-year degree somehow being better than a 2-year degree, families also play a role in supporting the value of alternative types of education and careers. Let’s help students consider all their options.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Thank school crossing guards To the editor, I would like to say a huge thank you to the crossing guards at Mora Elementary School. They are out there every single day with a smile, making sure our children get around safely. I’ve seen them sweating in the blazing heat, drenched from the pouring rain and covered in snow, yet they are smiling. I’ve seen them almost get hit by an SUV, I’ve seen them stand in front of a moving vehicle to protect a child. I’ve seen them snatch up a small child who is unknowingly running right into moving traffic. I’ve seen them knock on car windows of inattentive drivers and kindly wave them forward even though it’s the thousandth time they’ve done that that week—and all with a smile. I’ve seen them yelled at, cursed at, swerved at and flipped off numerous times. Still, they are out there daily for our children—with a smile. Every. Single. Day. They greet kids, parents and visitors alike. They are always smiling, waving and saying, “Have a great day!” I’m absolutely sure they have bad days and would like to give a few of us parents a piece of their minds. But they don’t. They aren’t there for us, they are there for the kids that they love and it’s evident. They have days they don’t want to go outside, or they have a sick kid, or they don’t feel well, or they

just plain don’t want to be there. But they are there, daily, for us, with a smile. They kindly wait while parents drop off in the wrong spot, hold up traffic, go the wrong way or don’t look up from their phone to move forward. Still, they are smiling. They deserve a huge thank you. It’s easy to get frustrated with them when we are running late or having a bad day, but we need to remember they are out there—for our children--while we are in our warm vehicles waiting to get by. Their interest is in our children and keeping them safe. Their concern is to get our child to class on time, not to make sure we get to work on time. Let’s remember that and let’s show them our appreciation by thanking them personally, by paying attention while in the pickup line and by following the rules, which will hopefully make their job just a tiny bit easier. Thank you. Angie Doughty Ogilvie

Joe Wolf gets the issues To the editor, The recent election of Jason Rarick means that he will resign his seat in the Minnesota House of Representatives. Shortly afterward, another election will be held for the seat he is resigning. I am supporting Joe Wolf for election to this seat in the Minnesota House of Representatives. I’ve known Joe for a number of years. He is a life long resident of

Pine City. Although fairly young, Joe has had many life experiences that have prepared him for this venture. As far as involvement in politics, he worked for me in my re-election campaign in 2012 before I had to drop out due to some health issues. I was very impressed with his knowledge of our district, his hard work and his integrity. Thereafter he was a delegate to the Minnesota Republican Convention. Also, he worked on Texas Governor Greg Abbott’s re-election campaign and for Jason Rarick’s state senate campaign here in District 11. He currently is employed by the Minnesota Senate Republican Caucus where he has developed working relationships with current Senate and House members. Outside of the political world, Joe lived and worked in Senegal, West Africa. Back home he was a director on the Pine City Chamber of Commerce and was also chairman of Students United, a Minnesota non-profit. Joe is a graduate of Pine City High School and has a geography degree from Minnesota State University, Mankato. His family established roots farming east of Grasston over 100 years ago. Joe has an excellent understanding of the issues facing Minnesota and our district. I am supporting Joe Wolf for District 11B state representative and I hope you will consider it also. Mora, Ogilvie basketball teams battle for possession of prized goat 125 YEARS AGO (1894) The political kettle has begun to boil. Some are preparing for the spring’s campaign and others are kicking the Democrats. Fred Pennington discharged his skidding crew on Monday, having got News from through with their services. Yesteryear Messrs. Ekman, Matt Anderson Olson and Co. received their engine this week. Their mill will be completed and running in full blast next week. Another man was killed at McDermott’s camp last week. His name was Johnson, and hailed from Goodhue county. He was killed by a falling tree. It is reported here that several of the settlers at Pokegama station are contemplating removing to Kanabec county. The chief objection they have to that country is a lack of roads. Several parties have made applications for homestead lands in the northern part of the county this week. There are yet several sections subject to the homestead law in this county. 100 YEARS AGO (1919) “Braham Man Missing Since Before Christmas:” Oscar Nelson, hardware merchant of Braham was in our city Monday morning to consult the authorities about the disappearance of his father-in-law, A. A. Anderson. Sheriff Claes Johnson with a number of volunteers left on the noon train for Braham to join a searching party in trying to locate the whereabouts of Mr. Anderson. About a week before Christmas he left the Nelson home where he has been staying, with the intention of going to the Chas. Dahlien home at Rush Point. The last seen of him was at the Johnson place south of town. Last Friday, Mr. Dahlien called up Mr.

He was informed that he had left for his place six weeks ago, and this caused apprehensions that something must have befallen the aged man en route.---North Star, Cambridge. “Soldiers Pay Last Tribute To Their Departed Comrade; Edwin Nelson Laid at Rest at Oakwood Cemetery--First Military Funeral in Mora Conducted by Men Who Have Seen Service:” The variable cycle of death has again inscribed upon the honor roll of patriotism the name of a Kanabec County soldier boy. The body of Edwin Nelson, accompanied by military escort, arrived home Monday morning from Camp (Hancock, Georgia) . Funeral services were conducted Tuesday afternoon from the Auditorium of the Mora High School, the ceremony being of military regulation, participated in by about forty of our recently returned soldier boys from camp and overseas. This was the first real military funeral ceremony held in the county and conducted by comrades of actual service. 75 YEARS AGO (1944) “Annual Goat Game Tomorrow Night; Mora and Ogilvie Basketball Teams Will Battle for Possession of Goat:” The annual fight for the prized goat will be held between Mora and Ogilvie on Feb. 18, 1944. This basketball game with all its friendly rivalry is anticipated by both schools. The goat game idea was instigated by the student council of Mora in 1934. This far-sighted group decided it would be fun to see which team could get the other’s goat. The goat was then made by Otto Irene to fulfill this idea. So far Mora has only had the goat four years, while Ogilvie has retained it for six years. The Bluedevils won in ‘34 and ‘35 but Ogilvie coaxed it 9 miles westward for ‘36, ‘37, ‘38 and ‘39. Olson Occurs at Home Near Grasston Saturday, Feb. 12:” E. G. Olson, early pioneer of Grass Lake township, passed away at his home near Grasston last Saturday morning, February 12. He was 87 years old at the time of his death. The deceased was among the few remaining settlers who came to Kanabec county when it had only one voting precinct, that being at the old log court house located on the banks of Snake river, six miles south of Mora. He was a native of Sweden, coming to Grass Lake in 1876, and had been a continuous resident of the county ever since. He has the distinction of having held the office of justice

of the peace of his township over 50 years, having first been elected in 1883. He also had other positions of trust in his community, including town clerk. 50 YEARS AGO (1969) “Cougarville Supper Club to Hold Grand Opening:” A grand opening will be held this weekend in the area’s newest supper club--the new dining room at Cougarville in Quamba. Live music, prizes and surprises will add to the gaiety of the event. Hans and Mac Larsen, owners of Cougarville, have just completed work on the dining room which is 40 by 46 feet with a seating capacity of 125 people. Steaks and lobster will be featured with Howard Allman as chef, Ethel Nikodym is his assistant. The dining room is carpeted, and lower part of the walls are paneled in wood. Velvet wallpaper in black and gold decorates the upper walls, and colonial lamps light the room. Chairs are covered with black leather; light gold drapes complete the decor.

25 YEARS AGO (1994) “Guenther makes it 3 in a row; Tabor, Myers, Robinson new champions; Sweden’s Leif Soderling skis 93km:” On a Vasaloppet weekend where the weathers warm and hearts even warmer, Jan Guenther fought off 1989 winner and familiar challenger Jo Ann Hanowski to win a third consecutive 58km wreath; Chip Tabor and Michael Myers, roommates during January’s Olympic trials in Anchorage, Alaska, won the men’s titles; and Angela Robinson, participating in her first Vasaloppet, ended Julie Weier’s three-year run by being the first woman to finish the 35km. But the skier who may have left the most lasting mark on this first cross-country ski festival in Mora, Minn., to have an International Vasa Exchange was a 40-year-old naturalized Swede who skied from mid-morning to well after dusk. FirstLight Health System will be changing its name due to a trademark conflict with FirstLight Home Care, an in-home care agency based in Cincinnati, Ohio. The home-care agency has franchised and is expanding across the country. According to the United States Patent and Trademark Office, it received the national trademark for “FirstLight Homecare” in April, 2011 and filed for the trademark for “FirstLight Healthcare Solutions” in November, 2018. FirstLight Health System, formerly Kanabec Hospital, began using the name on March 1, 2011 along with its clinics in Hinckley

AVOIDING CONFUSION FirstLight Health System Chief Executive Officer Randy Ulseth said the reason for changing the hospital and clinics’ name is as much of a legal battle as a public relations one. Ulseth cited potential confusion between the organizations, and wanted the hospital’s reputation to stand on its own. Ulseth said the homecare company never made a cease and desist order, but had contacted the hospital a few months ago and asked them to consider re-branding. According to Ulseth, the hospital board negotiated with the homecare company and evaluated their options until the board decided the potential confusion for their

patients would be too much of a disadvantage to continue to use the “FirstLight” moniker. It is unknown what the new name will be, but Ulseth said the change will be happening “ASAP,” as soon as the hospital can select a re-branding company to help them undertake the massive task. Despite the challenge, Ulseth’s message to his staff was positive. In a memo to employees, he wrote, “So, we have a great opportunity to start fresh, in our new facilities, as a newly branded organization ... The board will engage our staff and our communities to work toward re-branding to reflect the organization that we have grown into over the past eight years ... No matter our name, it’s the work you all do that defines us.”

Blind author’s faith spreads sunshine during rain BY LINDA GALLAGHER NEWS@MORAMINN.COM

The first things you notice about Mora author Tammy Frost is her calm demeanor, easy smile and confidence. Born blind and becoming hearing impaired in her late 20’s Frost hasn’t let these obstacles impede her ambition to pursue writing. Encouraged at a young age by her devoted parents, she was taught early that she could accomplish anything a sighted person could if she worked hard enough. Frost credits her faith for sustaining her throughout the many storms in her life. Frost was born and raised in Peoria, Illinois, went on to study history and special education at Hope College in Michigan. She has worked with developmentally challenged adults in day programs as well as served as a teaching assistant and social worker. Frost moved to Minnesota after meeting her husband, Stanchfield native, Clarence Frost Jr. at a guide dog training session in 1996 in Michigan and the couple married in 1999. Frost spent several years working at the Oakland Area Learning Center in Cambridge as a career counselor. The couple then moved to Mora in 2012 where the Frost family lives within walking distance to downtown Mora and easy access to most businesses. They enjoy living in Mora and said, “the people are nice and friendly, it’s a good place

to live.” Frost started writing as a teenager putting her thoughts and reflections down in braille. She currently uses a Braille Sense device that types electronically in braille with an area that the sentence would appear in braille. A few years ago Frost started entering writing contests for the blind and won a contest in August 2017 and took second prize of $1,000. The Frosts’ used the prize money for new living room furniture. The inspiration for Frost’s children’s book titled “Fay and the Rainy Day” was inspired by Frost’s faith as well as living with three cats and one large dog who are not fans of thunderstorms. She had an idea for a children’s book that would address a faith based perspective about stormy days. She wanted to convey another story, something other than thunder is God bowling or the angels are moving furniture that many children are told. The story is about a calico kitten named Fay and her mama Daisy Mae. Fay is sad because

Empty Bowl food drive to benefit Braham food shelf CONTRIBUTED

The annual Empty Bowl Food Drive to benefit the Braham Area Food Shelf will be held from 11 a.m. 1:00 p.m. on March 21, 2019, at the Braham Event Center. This is a cooperative effort between the schools, businesses, Braham Event Center other organizations and individuals in the Braham area to raise money for the food shelf. Freewill donations will allow attendees to select from three kinds of delicious soup while they listen to musical entertainment provided by area students. Their donation also allows them to choose one of the bowls being made by school art students to take home with them. The empty bowl represents the problems many in our community have to provide adequate food for families and/or individuals. The Braham Area Food Shelf is heavily used and needs support to continue to provide this resource. There will also be a silent auction.

it is raining and she cannot go out to play. Daisy Mae explains why God sends the rain and shows Fay ways to enjoy their time inside. The process of self publishing was helped along by Frost’s cousin David Stomberg, a magazine publisher in Texas, who was able to help guide her through the publication process. Finding a talented yet affordable illustrator was not an easy task for Frost but with help from Stomberg they were able to find a good fit in Olsi Tola, halfway around the world in Albania. Frost assembled a team of great nieces and nephews, friends and educators for input on visualizing what the illustrations would be on each page as the story flowed and Tola used the suggestions to create the illustrations that pull the book together. When not writing Frost enjoys reading, listening to music, knitting, crafts, gardening and cooking. She is also working on companion activities related to the book that will soon be available through Frost’s Faith Foundation including children’s crafts, recipes for parents and children to make together and ideas for Sunday school teachers at www.FaithFoundationsPublications.com. “Fay and the Rainy Day” is available for sale through Amazon or locally in Mora at the Crystal Bar and Grill, Ace Hardware and Zimmermann’s.

Support, encourage friends in delicate situations CONTRIBUTED AMERICAN COUNSELING ASSOCIATION

Human beings are just naturally social creatures, some of us more so than others. Most of us enjoy our interactions with others, sharing thoughts and happenings and learning from our friends. While many of the relationships we have are fairly casual, there are other “close” associations that matter because they’re with people we truly care about. These might be work associates, neighbors, relatives or a spouse or relationship partner. They’re relationships we value, but are also relationships that can pose problems when we see something wrong. Regardless of how much we think of, or care about, someone close to us, there may be times when we find something troubling or disturbing about that person. At such times we may agonize over whether we should share our opinion or observations, realizing

that doing so might jeopardize the relationship. It can be a difficult decision to make even when the person in question is a spouse or other close relative. While we all want to avoid losing a close friend, we also want to be responsible and to offer the help we think is needed. There’s no foolproof way to pass on our concerns but there are ways to approach delicate subjects that minimize the risk of losing a friend. One way is to use what’s sometimes called a “caring confrontation” or a “one-two” approach. This begins by having the conversation in a private place and just between the two of you. Part one is simply describing in an objective, non-judgmental way what you have observed. You might use positive statements like, “You don’t seem as happy lately. Am I right?,” rather than saying, “You sure are depressed these days.” Part “two” of this approach is to question whether your friend feels your observation is accurate. Is what

you stated representative of things not going well? If your friend agrees that there’s something wrong, the next step is to offer an invitation to discuss it. The idea is not to position yourself as an authority trying to “fix” the issue. Sometimes simply giving someone an opportunity to discuss what’s wrong can be very helpful. If you think a professional could help, you might make that observation in a positive way. The point is not to be confrontational, but rather to give your friend the support and encouragement needed to find help and return to a more happy, positive life. Bluejackets hockey finishes season with solid wins BY SCOTT MCKINNEY NEWS@MORAMINN.COM

The Mora High School varsity Nordic ski teams both took second place at the Section 5A Tournament on Feb. 6. The teams will compete at State Feb. 14.

Skiers soar at Sections, advance to State BY SCOTT MCKINNEY NEWS@MORAMINN.COM

After a strong showing at the Section 5A Tournament, the Mora Mustangs boys and girls Nordic ski teams will return to the State Tournament, Feb. 14. On Wednesday, Feb. 6, the Mora teams both took second place at the Section tournament at Theodore Wirth Park in Minneapolis. Both will advance to State: the boys for the fourth year in a row, and the girls for the second year. The Mustang boys finished with 355 points, just six points behind first-place Champlin Park and two points ahead of Maple Grove. Junior Cooper Lennox took first place overall, finishing at 14:46 for the best time in classic skiing and 14:01.6 for second place in skate skiing.

Seniors Kaden Halverson and Nate Williams took 12th and 13th places respectively; ninth grader Tommy Mulford took 23rd, senior Wilson Krueger 31st, sophomore Dane Halverson 54th, and junior Dylan Buckingham 64th. The Mora girls clinched their State tournament trip with 341 points, 24 points behind Andover and just one point ahead of Elk River/Zimmerman. Taking second place overall was junior Johanna Schwinghamer, who finished at 18:25 in the classic race and 35:05.1 in the skate race. The team’s effort included senior Cailyn Smith finishing in 13th place; juniors Abby Szoka at 21st, Gen Woods at 27th and Lily Peterson at 30th; and ninth graders Lily Erickson at 49th and Margo Niskanen at 58th. “We couldn’t afford to lose

many points between the morning classic race and the afternoon skate skiing event,” said head coach Peter Larsen. “The boys were in third place after the morning race. Cooper helped us out a ton by coming in first overall; also, Tommy moved up four places and Kaden moved up five between morning and afternoon. Wilson rose from 44th to 31st place after the skate race.” “Similarly, Johanna helped by taking second overall. Our girls were in fourth place after the morning race, but in the afternoon Gen moved up two places and Cailyn moved up one. All our skiers knew we had an outside chance; they not only held steady, but made advances.” Last season the boys team took first place and the girls finished second at Sections.

Both advanced to State, where the boys finished 10th and the girls took 13th. In individual State competition Lennox finished in 14th place and Schwinghamer finished 42nd. Larsen said that the Mustangs’ success comes from many places. “I’m a small piece of a very large puzzle. We have so many things going for us here in Mora. Support from community organizations, the school and the parents has made all the difference. Plus, all 79 of the kids on our roster train together and help to encourage the competing skiers.” “I think it will be a good success if both teams end up in the top 10 at State. But we do have our work cut out for us.” The State Tournament begins on Thursday, Feb. 14 at Giants Ridge in Biwabik.

The Cambridge-Isanti/ Mora/Pine City Bluejackets girls hockey team finished their third consecutive winning season, tying last year’s best-ever record with impressive wins and a core of experienced players. The Bluejackets finished their season with an 18-8 record, second place in the Mississippi 8 Conference and fifth place in Section 7 AA. This tied last year’s best-ever record. The season ended on Friday, Feb. 8 with a 5-0 loss to Grand Rapids/ Greenway in the first round of Section playoffs. The team was eliminated from postseason play last season with a loss to Elk River/ Zimmerman. The team closed out the regular season with three solid wins: 4-1 over North Shore on Jan. 26; 8-2 over Princeton/Big Lake/Becker on Feb. 1; and 6-1 over St. Francis/North Branch on Feb. 5. They lost their previous game against Grand Rapids/Greenway 6-1 on Nov. 30. Representing Mora High School on this year’s team are junior Alana Fix and sophomores Kayla Caswell, Tori Dion and Jordan Millam. Former assistant varsity coach Shannon Skelton took over as head coach this season.

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK Kaden Halverson | Senior & Captain | Mora ra Nordic Skiing Sponsored by: FirstLight Health System www.Firstlighthealthsystem.org From the Coach: “Kaden is our team captain and has been a good leader for the team. At Sections on Wednesday, Feb. 6, he was one of two skiers that picked up extra points by passing other skiers during the race. He passed ďŹ ve others to earn ďŹ ve extra points so he qualiďŹ ed as an individual and helped the whole team to qualify for state which takes place Feb. 14.â€? - Coach Peter Larsen

How do you prepare for a meet?: The ood night before I make sure I eat right, good nd healthy food that is not too heavy and drink a ton of water, I ďŹ nd I am faster if I drink plenty of water and I get plentyy of sleep. The day of a race I mentally p focus, do a proper 40 minute warm up ed and prepare for cold weather if needed ace with Vaseline and Chapstick on my face and lips.

Favorite thing about sports: I like competing and being a part of a team. I also like being involved in a sport where I can be with friends and mostly I like teaching the younger skiers. I am also in cross country running and track and ďŹ eld.

Highlight of athletic career: The 2018 cross country running season, the team placed third at state, also being on the ski team at state three years in a row.

Person who has inuenced you: Jordan Woods, he was the ski captain last year and he was always super helpful, he helped a lot in the weight room. He was always supportive of me and a positive role model. I try to be the same kind of captain as he was.

Intersection turn diagram

Safe turns like a well rehearsed dance Question: Do you turn in front of an approaching vehicle or behind it when two vehicles both want to turn left at an uncontrolled intersection? Answer: If two vehicles approach the intersection close to the same time, both vehicles should make the left turn in front of each other and make sure that the intersection is clear from other approaching Ask A vehicles. Trooper Before beginning the turn, it’s importNeil Dickenson ant to take the proper driving actions to ensure your safety and the safety of other motorists around you. According to the Minnesota Driver’s manual, move safely into the correct lane well ahead of the place where you will make the actual turn. Slow down before making turns. Signal your intent at least 100 feet before the turn. Signals let pedestrians and drivers know what you plan to do. Additional important reminders for making a safe turn include: • While waiting to turn, keep your wheels straight and your foot on the brake. If your vehicle is struck from the rear, you will be less likely to be pushed into oncoming traffic. • Continue signaling until you begin your turn. • Do not make sudden turns from the wrong lane of traffic. • Watch for traffic or obstacles in the road you plan to enter. • Always finish your turn in the correct lane. • If the car ahead of you is signaling for a left turn, slow down and prepare to stop. • When waiting to make a left turn at a green traffic light with oncoming traffic, position the car into the intersection where your body appears even with the curb line. The only opportunity to make a left turn may occur when the green light changes to yellow. If you have any questions concerning traffic related laws or issues in Minnesota, send your questions to Sgt. Neil Dickenson – Minnesota State Patrol at 1131 Mesaba Ave Duluth, MN 55811. (Or reach him at Neil.Dickenson@ state.mn.us) SERGEANT NEIL DICKENSON is Minnesota State Patrol public information officer for the state’s northeast region.

The cockpit was heating up – and not in a good way. The temperature gauge climbed to 195 degrees, with spikes to 200. He knew a safe max was 170. The engine was chugging on vapor. In a few minutes it would choke out. And home was still 13 minutes away. Michael Robbins, of Cambridge, took stock of his situation at the controls of his Quad Cities Challenger aircraft on Saturday, Feb. 2, and it didn’t look good. He left Cambridge that morning around 8 a.m. in the bright yellow, two-seat experimental airplane, visited friends in New Richmond, Wisconsin, and Chisago Lakes Township, and was headed back to Cambridge Municipal Airport when things got real. “I noticed my temperatures were getting a little higher than normal,” Robbins, 47, said. “I did my preflight check, but by the time I got to Stacy it was obvious I had a serious problem.” With the spikes up to 200 degrees, Robbins figured he was losing coolant. Without it, the pistons would expand to the point they wouldn’t fit in their chambers, he said. They’d quit, and the engine would sputter out. “I kept reducing power and reducing power and reducing power trying to get the temperatures down,” he said, “but they wouldn’t come down.” He knew he wasn’t going to make it to an air strip. He’d have to just bring it down. Somewhere. ONLY ONE GOOD OPTION “I circled and checked places to land,” he said. “There was a little lake on the northeast corner of I-35 and Stacy Trail, but it was too small to get into. I couldn’t get over the trees and then down, so I started looking for other places.” He circled the area at an altitude of about 1,000 feet, looking for options. And felt no panic. “You just fly the airplane first,” Robbins said, “and worry about getting things situated later. You see these news reports of guys dying from engine failure. I never understood that. They must not fly the airplane first.” With only minutes of power left, he debated landing on I-35, but didn’t want to cause a pile-up and decided against it. “The best place I could see was the off-ramp for I-35 south,” he said. He made a low pass over the exit to make sure there were no wires or signs to snag his 30-foot wingspan. He descended and timed his approach while watching cars moving up the ramp below him. “I was able to get in front of them and dropped down,” he said. “The lady right be-

hind me on the ramp had me on her dash camera filming the entire thing.” Once on the ground, Robbins taxied his way to the stop sign at the top of the ramp and waited as vehicles passed east and west on Stacy Trail. “I waited until it was clear and made a right turn,” he said. “I had to move over cause a car was coming as I started to the west.” His right wing tip was inches away from taking out a speed limit sign. He made the left turn into the Kwik Trip gas station on the south side of Stacy Trail and breathed again. “Then it was like, ‘Oh boy, that was close,’” Robbins said. “I was shaking pretty good.”

‘Oh boy, that was close.’ Mike Robbins Pilot A QUICK FIX AND LOTS OF ATTENTION He didn’t take any time to settle down, though. Once the plane was parked, he jumped out to diagnose the problem. “I didn’t see anything obvious,” Robbins said. “Then I checked my radiator and couldn’t feel any water, so I went into Kwik Trip and bought antifreeze and water.” Inside, he was approached by the driver who followed him up the exit ramp. “She didn’t say anything to me other than, ‘Nice landing! I was right behind you,’” Robbins said. The store manager was supportive and understanding of his predicament, he said. She allowed him to move the plane to another area of the parking lot and made sure nobody got hurt in the incident. As he was topping off the antifreeze outside, a Minnesota State Patrol officer happened to pass by on the ramp and saw the plane. “He came to say ‘hi’ and to see what was going on,” Robbins said, “and why I was there.” The Chisago County Sheriff’s Office also received two calls from passing motorists who witnessed the landing,

and a deputy was on site soon after. Law enforcement consulted on how to handle the situation. “They contacted the FAA, trying to figure out what to do with me,” Robbins said. “It’s not every day you have this happen.” While discussions were going on, Robbins located the cause of his loss of coolant – a leak from a loose fitting that took minutes to fix with a screwdriver he kept in his on-board tool kit. HOW TO GET HOME? By this time, a few hours had passed and news teams from a couple TV stations showed up for interviews. Curious folks grabbed videos on their cell phones. “All kinds of people started coming over,” he said. “It was crazy. They were taking pictures – pictures with their kids in front of the plane. It was fun. They were having a great time with it.” Chisago County Sheriff’s officers were not having as great a time. “They wanted me to take the airplane apart,” Robbins said, “but the plane is very difficult to get apart, and I didn’t have anyone to come up with a 25-foot trailer to get me. So it took awhile before they figured out what to do with me.” After a final consult with the FAA, a sergeant called back with good news. “He said, ‘OK, how can we get you out of here safely?’” according to Robbins. The answer was simple – 200 to 250 feet of open road. Sheriff’s squad cars blocked off Stacy Trail as Robbins taxied his bird out onto the road facing west and revved her up. “They let me out,” he said, “and it took me a few seconds to get airborne.” In 13 minutes he was home. NO FEAR OF FLYING Robbins said he had no qualms about taking the plane back up after the incident. “I had no worries about it,” he said. “It ran flawlessly all the way home.” And he says he’s not worried about future airborne emergencies – especially since this wasn’t his first unplanned landing.

In 2016, soon after he’d built the 525-pound Challenger aircraft, the engine seized up in mid-flight. “I thought, ‘Oh no, I have to land,” Robbins recalled. “I landed on a farm road in the middle of nowhere north of Princeton.” He replaced the engine after that and suffered no other close calls other than flying through rough weather – until last week. On Saturday and Sunday the story of the amazing landing was aired on numerous Twin Cities television stations, then carried by their affiliates around the country. By Monday morning Robbins considered taking a vacation day from his job as an automation professional in the Twin Cities, worried about what his buddies would think of his 15 minutes of fame. “I went into work and it wasn’t too bad,” he said. “Most of it was good-hearted ribbing.” His cool head in a hot situation not only got him through alive, it earned him a new name on the job. “A WCCO reporter said that I was ‘perfectly chill,’” Robbins said with a laugh. “So now that’s my new nickname.”

TIDBITS Robbins R bbi grew up in i the th P Portland tl d and Seattle areas, moving to Cambridge in 2000 His love of flying began as a boy; at age 10 he built a glider with a 10-foot wingspan Flying lessons began at age 15, giving him over 30 years experience in the air He flew bigger craft like Cessnas and Pipers with his private pilot’s license He let that license expire and now has a “sport pilot” license to fly his preferred experimental and ultralight craft He hand-built the Challenger in 2016 from a popular, 35-year-old design The FAA will visit Robbins to review his maintenance log and investigate the cause of the engine failure Vibration or last week’s cold weather could have loosened the fitting that led to the coolant leak He once flew his wife to Wisconsin in the Challenger to replace a broken Packer cup

Derek S. Hughes Derek Seth Hughes died Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2019, at his home in Duluth. He was 33 years old. He was born March 6, 1985, in Mora. Oh Derek. The Pretty Princess of our family, was definitely one of a kind. He was a very private person who worked at Goodwill in Duluth. He enjoyed watching Days of Our Lives, Big Brother and Survivor. He loved Mexican Lindo, but nothing beat Grandma’s enchiladas-he would request them for his birthday dinners. He loved his family and friends with all his heart. He had the gift of gab; he loved talking on the phone, to everyone, talking for hours just like his grandpa. One of his most favorite places to go was the Flame, for soda and social hour. He always talked about going there and always had stories to share. The family feels as if they know his friends through his stories. He had a very special spot in his heart for his niece, Alexis. He was so proud when he got to hear her play violin. Even more special to him was every summer, for many years, when his neice went to Duluth to stay with Grandma and their most special memories were made. The three of them would head up the North Shore to agate hunt, hit up the candy store, eat at different places, go to Glensheen Mansion, watch movies in Canal Park and so much more. Their time together was truly treasured. He was preceded in death by grandfather, Melvin Ahonen and dog, Gingersnap. He is survived by mother, Diane Bayerle (Dennis Schan); sister, Leah (Matt) Smith; niece, Alexis Hughes; grandmother, Sharron Ahonen; uncle and aunt, Duane and Robin Ahonen; aunt and uncle and godmother, Lynn and Mike Jacobson; cousins Amanda, Nathan and James and their families and many great aunts, uncles and friends.

William L. Erickson William “Bill” Luther Erickson died on Friday, Feb. 8, 2019, during a beautiful sunrise. He was 73 years old. He was born on May 5, 1945,to Carl and Doris E Erickson in St. Paul. At a v very young age he learned tthe technique of milking c cows by hand on the family ffarm in Shafer. He lived a and enjoyed the country life tthere with his parents and ssiblings, Wally, John and D Dona until his 10th grade a at Taylors Falls school. T The family then moved to ttown with the joys of indoor p plumbing. After high school h he was going to join the sservice but a football injury prevented that from happening. Instead, he did an apprenticeship to become a tool and die maker, which became his career for most of his working life. On Sept. 25, 1965, he took the leap and was united in marriage to his wife, Chris, on a snowy day in Taylors Falls. They were able to enjoy 53 years of marriage together. During their marriage they were blessed with two daughters, Lauri and Sherri. After long commutes to the Twin Cities for work, he started his own shop in 1977 called Progressive Tool and Design in Dresser, Wisconsin. The business was successful due to his knowledge and good business sense. He was always so proud of creating jobs for the community, and the business continues to this day. After selling the shop, he and his wife tried a new adventure – owning and operating Lake Country Cheese and Liquor in St. Croix Falls, Wisconsin. During all

of his working years he never forgot to enjoy life. A favorite saying of his was “do it while you can,” and he did. The family has a lot of great memories of traveling, camping, fishing, enjoying weekends at the lake cabin, having lots of laughs at the buck shack, spending time with friends and of course cheering on their Packers. There were many fly-in fishing trips to Canada, hunting out west, salmon fishing in Lake Michigan and of course fishing and hunting locally with the gang. He passed his love of the outdoors to his entire family and was so proud that his grandchildren are following in his footsteps. He taught his grandsons the love of growing a vegetable garden. He tried every year to get his potatoes planted by Good Friday, even if it meant planting them in a bucket because the ground was still frozen. His granddaughters also loved to fish with Papa and they learned from him just when to set the hook. He dearly loved his family and the joy they brought to his life. He made many wonderful friends along his journey in life. His family and friends will all miss his wit, spirit and love of life but feel blessed to have known him. He was preceded in death by parents, Carl and Doris Erickson; brothers, Wally and John Erickson; brother-in-law, Gene McKenzie and other family members. He is survived by wife, Chris; daughter, Lauri (Dan) Anderson and their children Lindsey and Garrett; daughter, Sherri Webb and her children Ethan and Emily; sister, Dona McKenzie and other relatives and friends. A memorial service was held on Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2019, at Dresser-Methven Funeral Home with Pastor Marlin Harris officiating. Harp music was provided by Martha Bush. Arrangements by Dresser-Methven Funeral Home.
