Obituaries & In Memoriam Mary Higgins (nee McMillan) The family of Mary (McMillan) Higgins are sad to announce her peaceful passing on March 17, 2017 at the age of 96. Mary was born in Sarnia, Ontario in 1920, the only girl of nine children to Cariboo pioneers Robert and Oma McMillan. She grew up at Horse Lake and attended school in Lone Butte. In 1939 she married Kenneth Higgins and together they raised seven children. First living at Bridge Lake and then at Mahood Falls, where she held the position of post mistress for many years. Our Mom was a master knitter, quilter, seamstress, 4-H leader and exceptionally hard worker, especially on the homestead where there were always animals to be fed, doctored, milked or delivered of their young, garden to plant or harvest, hay to be hauled, firewood to chop and of course family to be cared for. Her dedication to her family and her livelihood knew no bounds. In 1980 Mary and Ken retired and moved to Lumby where she enjoyed many years in her garden, growing fruit trees and flowers that she could only dream of before. Mary was predeceased by husband Ken in 1988, by her parents and seven of her brothers, Archie, Alec, Ross, Clarence, Glenn, along with two in childhood and by infant grandson Clifford. She is survived by her brother Jim (Sheila), sister-in-law Shirley McMillan, her children Vivian (Barney) Lepine, Jim (Diana), Marv (Linda), Marj, MaryAnne (Dave) Shaw-MacLaren, Vern (Dean), Sandy, her precious grandchildren Tom, Gerald, Jason, Sheri, Diana, Danae, Darryl, Kim, Scott, Lesley, Jordan, Caleb, Tara, Jamie, Darcy, Daniel, Steven, 24 great-grandchildren, 2 greatgreat-grandchildren as well as many much loved nieces and nephews. We are comforted in knowing she is reunited with our Dad and all those dear to her heart who have gone along before her.

Glen had a great sense of humour that often teetered on the balance of social acceptance and loved to make people laugh. Throughout his life, Glen spent countless hours helping others. Some of his volunteer time was spent with Habitat for Humanity, Telephone Pioneers and the Man in Motion tour. His family remembers often stopping on the side of the road to help strangers fix their car. Glen had an insatiable quest to know how things worked and paid particular attention to detail. His family fondly remembers his creative abilities and craftsmanship. In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that you make a donation to a charity of your choice. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, April 29th, 2017, at 1:30 pm at Desert Gardens, 540 Seymour Street, Kamloops, BC. Please come and share a special memory. James Randall Simpson June 17, 1981 – March 14, 2017

It is with great sadness we announce that Karlau Uyeda, age 72, passed away on Friday, March 10, 2017 at Kamloops Hospice after a short but courageous battle with cancer. She was blessed by being surrounded by her close family at the time of her passing.

It is with heavy hearts and great sadness that we announce the passing of James Randall Simpson at the age of 35 years.

Karlau was the oldest of eight children. She was born in Vancouver, BC on April 6, 1946 and grew up in Mission, BC. In 1968, Karlau moved to Kamloops and started her career as an RN at Royal Inland Hospital. While in her training she met her beloved husband George Uyeda and settled permanently in the area. Throughout her career she wore many hats; she was a nurse at RIH, a housewife, a business partner, a nurse at Overlander Extended Care and Kamloops Mental Health. During her busy life she still was able to earn her Nursing Degree from TRU in 1998, something that she was very proud of. Karlau was an incredible, caring and compassionate woman who gave back so much to others around her. She loved to pass on her vast knowledge of everyday life and take her chances at the Casino. She also enjoyed gardening, baking and simply spending time with her friends and family. Karlau is survived by her husband George, daughters Shelley and Tanya, her son Bryan and his spouse Tomoko and two grandchildren Kazuto and Maiya, brothers, the families of Vern Babuik, Del Babuik, Lyle Babuick, her sisters Jaqui Brogden and Heidi Babuick. Predeceased by her sister Elaine Singh, brother Ralph Babuik and parents Ernest and Eileen Babuick. The Uyeda family would like to extend our gratitude to all of the staff on 3W of RIH, Kamloops Hospice and especially to Dr. Gorman and Dr. Hamilton for their attentiveness and loving care. Her Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, April 22, 2017 at 2:00 pm at Schoenings Funeral Home in Kamloops. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Karlau’s name to the Kamloops Japanese Canadian Centre. Condolences may be expressed at www.schoeningfuneralservice.com

Q. I’m worried about the cremation cost. Help! A. We’ll help in a number of ways. First, you won’t be asked to pay up front; spread the payment over months if need be. Or, we’ll help you to obtain the CPP Death Benefit. Failing that, we’ll contact the BC Government for you. One way or another, money won’t be an issue.
