Obituaries & In Memoriam Bob (Robert) James Hubbard

Margaret (Peggy) Wickstrom

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of Bob Hubbard in Matanza, Cuba on January 19th, at the age of 73. He is survived by Jan, his wife of 48 years, daughter Shannon, son Jamie (Julie), grandchildren Madison and Nicolas, of Kamloops, sister Pat (Paul) Leloup of Richmond, sister-in-law and brother-in-law Joan and Gerry Sheanh of Chilliwack, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his parents Harry and Dorothea Hubbard of Kelowna, sister and brother-inlaw Aileen and Ken Dallas of Langley, niece Sheila Dallas, in-laws Walter and Jean Dyke and brother-in-law Bradley Dyke of Richmond.

Beloved wife of the late Desmond Wickstrom passed away peacefully at Cottonwoods Care Centre in Kelowna on January 21, 2017. She is survived by her children and spouses Patricia (David) Gorton of Aldergrove, Lorraine (Chris) Trautwein of San Ansalmo, California, Ted (Kim) Wickstrom of Medicine Hat, Alta, Ken Wickstrom and Lisa Francis of Kelowna, seven grandchildren Neysa, Brent, Jo Ellen, Rory, Britta, Angela and Nadia, five great-grandchildren as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Peggy was born in Penticton, BC and was a long-time resident of Kamloops, BC. She and Des enjoyed fishing, camping, golfing, dancing and curling and spending time with their children and grandchildren. They built one of the first homes in Dallas outside of Kamloops where they lived for over 40 years. Strong friendships were built in the community that lasted a lifetime and continue through their children to this day. For many years she worked for Irly Bird in Kamloops, prior to which she worked for Unemployment Canada and Royal Inland Hospital. She was renowned for her baking skills, especially her homemade bread and pies. She loved playing card games and bocci and was very competitive. The family would like to extend their thanks and gratitude for the care and compassion given by the staff at Berwick on the Park (Kamloops), Dorchester Retirement Centre (Kelowna), Cottonwoods Care Centre (Kelowna) and Kelowna General Hospital. A Celebration of her Life will be held in Kamloops sometime in the late spring early summer. Notification to all those who loved her will be given well in advance. Condolences may be sent to the family by visiting www.springfieldfuneralhome.com 250-860-7077.

Bob was born in Vancouver and raised and attended school in Richmond. His first job was jockeying cars for Tilden Rent-a-Car, which he enjoyed because he got to drive hot cars. Following brief employment with Esso, he and a partner purchased a used Hayes cab-over truck and hauled loads around the province for British Pacific. While this endeavor only lasted a year he had many stories to tell of his adventures. In 1967, he decided to enroll in a first aid program and that was the beginning of his career in the ambulance service. Starting with Richmond Ambulance as a driver and attendant and ending with the BC Ambulance Service 39 years later in Kamloops in Dispatch Quality Improvement. In retirement, his interests included travel, photography, geocaching, fishing and researching his family ancestry. Bob passed away while enjoying a wonderful vacation in Varadero, Cuba with his wife and daughter. A Celebration of Life will be held at 1:00 pm on Friday, February 3, 2017 at Schoening Funeral Service, 513 Seymour Street, Kamloops. Reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial donation in Bob’s name to the Heart & Stroke Foundation.
