VANCOUVER — A Canadian killed in Mexico has been identified by family and friends as a 48-year-old man from Victoria. Several Facebook posts offer condolences to Roger Corbett’s family and his son refers to Corbett as his rock and foundation. A post from the family said Corbett died while on vacation. A colleague at his Victoria business, Corbett’s Painting Ltd., said yesterday the death has come as a deep shock. “I don’t see the benefit of discussing it any further,’’ said a woman at the office. “I’m the accountant for his business and we’ve got a family that’s deeply in grief. “When somebody passes away in another country, it just complicates things further. Right now, they are just too involved with what’s going on for them personally.’’ Global Affairs Canada confirmed it is providing consular services to the family. Department spokesman Austin Jean also said a second Canadian was taken into custody in Mexico following Corbett’s death and consular staff are assisting him, too.
Manitoba welcomed into trade alliance

British Columbia is applauding Manitoba’s decision to join the New West Partnership Trade Agreement. The pact set up by B.C., Alberta and Saskatchewan in 2010 allows business, labour and investment to flow more freely within the region, and also reduces barriers to inter-provincial sales. Premier Christy Clark said bringing Manitoba into the fold can only strengthen the western provinces’ open market and will help expand all four economies.
Opioid crisis prompts meetings THE CANADIAN PRESS
OTTAWA — Premier Christy Clark is meetB.C. News ing with federal health and public safety ministers in Ottawa to talk about Canada’s opioid crisis in advance of this week’s summit meeting in the national capital. Last spring, British Columbia became the first province in the country to declare a public health emergency following a dramatic spike in overdose deaths related to the use of drugs such as fentanyl. Opioids include prescription painkillers such as oxycodone and morphine as well as illegal street drugs like heroin. The two-day summit, which starts Friday, will be co-hosted by Ontario Health Minister Eric Hoskins and federal counterpart Jane Philpott. The event will bring together health experts from across the country to examine issues including harm reduction and how to reduce addiction rates. Canada and the U.S. have the highest rates of opioid use in the world, and Philpott says the root causes must be examined to explain why that is the case.

Man accused of profiting from stolen baby formula, exporting it to Asia VANCOUVER — Vancouver police say they’ve arrested a man linked to the theft of hundreds of thousands of dollars of baby formula. Det. Const. Doug Fell says the accused preyed on as many 20 drug-addicted people in the city’s Downtown Eastside by recruiting them to shoplift infant food from retail chains over the past year. The seizure is estimated to be worth about $100,000 and Fell believes the suspect, who is 46 years old, is responsible for exporting an additional $200,000 to Asia for resale. Police believe the so-called predatory fencing ring accounts for 70 per cent of the baby formula theft in the Lower Mainland, which has spiked in recent years. Fell says criminals can earn 250 per cent of what they originally paid on the street for baby formula by moving it to China, where consumers pay up to $90 per container. The suspect has not been identified as charged are pending.
