The tunnel tour at Tranquille is expected to become a popular option in Kamloops. During a media preview, Minnie (below, based on an employee at Tranquille in the last century) conducted the underground tour. Andrea Klassen photos/KTW
Get ready to step into the darkness of history X From A1
Minnie stopped at the meat-cutting room, now filled with stories about Tranquille and reproductions of old photos — moments in time captured to share with those who dare enter the darkness to shed some light on the past. She told the group of the last patient to leave the facility when it was finally shut down by the provincial government, which had changed its focus from TB to mental-health — a 14-year-old girl. She didn’t know why the girl had been a patient, but noted society had changed and institutionalizing the mentally ill was no longer acceptable. McLeod took over the tour for a bit as Minnie seemed to be upset. He showed the group tuggers (used to ferry laundry through the tunnels) recovered when they took snow shovels down to clean the floors to prepare the tunnel — just one of miles and miles of tunnels on the property. On Saturday, Aug. 31, some staffers managed to get the tuggers running.
And we had some races down here, McLeod said, “bouncing off the walls. Ironically, someone who found the site’s Facebook page contacted McLeod and told him of how she used to drive the tuggers, delivering laundry back and forth — and of how that job and all the others in the laundry and kitchen had once been restricted to men. It was only through women like her and the support of their union that the “glass ceiling was broken here, he said. There’s a corner in the tunnel where new history will be recorded. Anyone with any connection to Tranquille is invited to record that linkage for future tour participants to see. As the tour came to an end, Minnie continued her story. Married with a young child, she no longer worked at Tranquille, but was forced to return one day. It had something to do with a park, her little son and her forgetfulness. And, it is part of the history that lives on below ground in the tunnels and above ground in the ramshackle remains of Tranquille.
