Kamsack Playhouse Theatre to re-open at full capacity After a prolonged forced shutdown, the Kamsack Playhouse Theatre will be opening to the public once again and the board members of the non-profit society are thrilled that regulations have lifted to allow full capacity attendance.

New immigration partnership to launch in East Central region In September of this coming year, a huge step forward will be taken in creating welcoming and inclusive communities throughout East Central Saskatchewan.

Community stakeholders, community members and the East Central N e w c o m e r We l c o m e Centre Inc. will be working collaboratively alongside a new initiative called the Local Immigration Partnership (LIP) which will aid in creating welcoming and inclusive communities in East Central Saskatchewan!

What is the Local Immigration Partnership?

“The LIP will bring together service providers, settlement agencies, community groups, municipal representatives, employers and other key organizations across the municipalities in which we serve to create a welcoming and inclusive community for newcomers to Canada,” said Edith Montesclaros, executive director of the East Central Newcomer Welcome Centre.

The LIP will conduct research to identify potential barriers for newcomers and then work

through its partnership to remove them so newcomers can fully participate in the economic, social, cultural, and recreational l i f e o f t h e c o m m u n i t y, explained Montesclaros.

The goal is for newcomers to enjoy a smooth and worry-free transition throughout their settlement experience and choose to stay in East Central communities.

The LIP will develop relationships and innovative linkages between organizations to encourage intentional collaboration in an effort to share knowledge and build on each other ’s strengths.

This makes it easier for organizations to successfully serve, hire and interact with newcomers, while feeling more connected to the overall community vision.

F u n d e d b y Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), LIPs are part of a Canada-wide project to increase the engagement of newcomers at the local level. LIPs across Canada are helping municipalities take a greater role in planning for and guiding immigration and settlement in support of a two-way process of

integration.

The main priorities of the LIP are to: Identify and eliminate gaps in programs and services for new arrivals and immigrants; Consolidate community resources and coordinate the delivery of services and programs for newcomers; Help address current labour shortages through strategic recruitment and workforce development and by preparing employers to hire newcomers; Develop and implement a comprehensive and community-based strategic action plan to guide attraction, settlement and integration of immigrants and newcomers to East Central Saskatchewan; Increase the community’s readiness for newcomers by promoting awareness about the benefits of diversity and providing opportunities for locals and newcomers to learn about and share with each other.

“The LIP will present an exceptional opportunity to reform the settlement landscape in East Central Saskatchewan and broaden responsibility for the integration of newcomers,” continued Montesclaros.

“The LIP will provide a holistic assessment of the barriers to newcomer integration as they relate both to settlement services and mainstream public services. Municipalities and communities, including stakeholders who are new to the settlement table (such as public institutions and employers), are induced to play a greater role. The LIP will enhance the coordination of services in areas such as housing, employment, education and health and ensure that public services are leveraged to advance the social and economic wellbeing of newcomers. By focusing community actions and energy toward common goals, the LIP will create a culture of collaboration which results in more value for money as service providers work together to pool resources and reduce duplication of services.

What makes a Welcoming Community?

As the destinations of newcomers have begun to diversify over the last decade and demographic change has made immigration a growing necessity, an emphasis on both

attracting and retaining immigrants has resulted in an increased emphasis on the role of the community. The result has been an increase in initiatives to build welcoming communities.

“The main characteristics of a welcoming community are: employment opportunities; fostering of social capital; affordable and suitable housing; positive attitudes toward immigrants, c u l t u r a l d i v e r s i t y, a n d the presence of newcomers in the community; presence of newcomerserving agencies that can successfully meet the needs of newcomers; links between main actors working toward welcoming communities; municipal features and services sensitive to the presence and needs of newcomers educational opportunities; accessible and suitable health care; available and accessible public transit; presence of diverse religious organizations; social engagement opportunities; political participation opportunities; positive relationships with the police and the justice system; safety; opportunities for use of public space

and recreation facilities; favourable media coverage and representation,” explained Montesclaros.

“The LIP will evaluate our communities and see which of these characteristics of a welcoming community need to be made a priority to ensure we are attracting and retaining immigrants in our communities throughout East Central Saskatchewan.”

“The partnership network that we are looking to create will be the LIPs greatest strength,” emphasized Montesclaros.

All partners will have a voice and ability to help in creating a welcoming and inclusive community. The LIP is currently looking for members from communities throughout East Central Saskatchewan to volunteer as a member of the LIP Advisory Council. Dutch Elm Disease survey report Having tested positive for Dutch Elm Disease, two trees will be removed in the Town of Kamsack.

While a third tree has appeared to be suffering, it is suspected to be a victim of herbicide poisoning.

Town Council has voted to avoid spending money on a test to confirm this.

Residents are reminded that although poisoning

trees with products like herbicides may temporarily damage the tree above ground, it is not an effective means to kills roots that may affect the sewage system.

New four-way stop signs Kamsack has added two new sets of four-way stop signs at the intersections of East Avenue and Miles Street, and East Avenue and Harvey Street. The busy intersections provide regular access to students on their way to school, as well as seniors and visitors on route to the Eaglestone Lodge Personal Care Home. Council hopes that the signs will help slow down vehicle traffic and ensure better safety for all using the route. A bylaw has been amended regarding the new traffic signage.

Speed limits The speed limit on Nykolaishen Drive has been reinstated to 50 kilometres per hour, while the speed limit on Queen Elizabeth Boulevard will remain at 40 kilometres per hour.

Street Closure Council has approved the street closure on the 500 block in Kamsack on August 29 to host the Christmas in August Street and Trade Fair. The event will be hosted as a fundraiser by the Kamsack Playhouse Theatre.

Council is sympathetic to personal issues and limitations, residents are reminded that bylaws exist for a reason and stand to protect the rights of neighbours.

The Town of Kamsack has also denied the request from a local couple to purchase an adjoining lot to their property for $100. Although this type of transaction has been approved in the past, the Town says the benefit will not be offered to residents who have incurred previous defaults on their property taxes.

New firefighter The Town of Kamsack is pleased to welcome Craig Sorgenson as the newest volunteer firefighter to the Kamsack Fire Department.

Staffing changes The Municipal Mechanic for the Town of Kamsack, Robert Swetlikoff, will be retiring from his position as of December 31. Recreation Director, Dayna Guertin, will be leaving her positon due to unforeseen circumstances.

Tax abatements After hearing a presentation from Brenda Wy l l y c h u k a n d J a c k Koreluik on behalf of the Kamsack Playhouse T h e a t r e , t h e To w n o f Kamsack has granted tax abatement for the next five years to support the historical theatre that has brought both movies and live entertainment to area residents for a number of decades.

The Kamsack Seniors Centre has been granted

a larger annual tax abatement rate due to the strain of COVID-19. The new tax abatement rate will be at 75 per cent for one year.

Water restrictions With a healthy back up reservoir in the famous K a m s a c k w a t e r t o w e r, t h e To w n o f K a m s a c k will not be implementing water restrictions.

LOOKING BACK...

A Decade Ago New equipment was installed on a new playground in Togo in 2012. The Togo Centennial Committee, with the assistance of many volunteers, managed to raise $17,000 for the cost of the playground equipment. The five pieces, all Little Tikes play structures, included a bumblebee, a stationary hippo crawlthrough device, a play structure for ages two to five years, a play structure for ages five to 12 years, and a swing set with three belt swings and a toddler’s seat. ******* Six large steel grain storage bins were damaged in a tornadolike storm that passed through the area on July 18, 2012. The toppled bins were located on the Fedorchuk farm near Hyas.

In some places, as much as five inches of rain fell, and hail destroyed a number of crops and gardens. Chris Chernoff, who was farming north of Pelly that year, had a vegetable garden completely destroyed by hail from the summer storm. ******* Eleven athletes were chosen to represent Kamsack on Team Parkland Valley at the Saskatchewan Summer Games in Meadow Lake from July 29 to August 4, 2012. Malee Shingoose, Tess Berezowski, and Kaylie Bowes competed in basketball, Henry Thomas competed in golf, and Regan Nichol, Allison Thomsen, and Austin Thomas competed in soccer. Kyle and Justin Morgan competed in athletics, and Zachary McGriskin competed in the triathlon, while Leanne McGriskin travelled with the triathlon team as manager. ******* Four days of fun and games with food and music augmented by gospel meetings, all at no charge and called Summer Explosion, was held at Kamsack August 16 to 19, 2012.

Organized by a committee of the Kamsack Pentecostal Church partnering with others, the event was held on the Sugar Shack grounds on Queen Elizabeth Boulevard. The event included games for kids and teens, drama skits, concerts, a free pancake breakfast and Korean meal, bouncy castles, relay games, helium balloons, and a dunk tank, along with face painting and crafts.

Drought conditions worrisome for farm outlook Late July and early August should be a time when farmers, in particular grain farmers, can pause and exhale, just a little. It is that time between seeding and spraying just completed and the hectic time ahead that is harvest. It is a time when maybe a producer gets to the lake to fish for a day, or to take the family camping without getting other work undone on the farm.

This year however, this lull in the work schedule is quite simply a time of stress for most.

The combination of too many days where the temperature has surged past 30 C, and far too many days without significant moisture has put huge drought stress on crops across Saskatchewan and the Prairies.

A recent moisture conditions map from the provincial government shows a rather bleak picture. Topsoil moisture for Saskatchewan’s cropland

was rated as eight per cent adequate, 39 per cent short and 53 per cent very short.

The problem becomes worse as August arrives because it will soon become too late for moisture, should it come, to do crops a lot of good.

The situation is one which obviously hits grain producers hard as the drought conditions are going to cut yields significantly, no matter what happens the rest of the summer, a level of damage in terms of yield potential has hit almost every crop.

The situation is perhaps even worse for many cattle producers.

Pastures which are

supposed to feed herds through the summer are not producing as they should, which will force producers to feed more hay.

In some cases, water sources such as dug-outs are drying up as well, making the situation more immediate and dire.

Of course hay yields are short due to the drought, and that brings forth questions of what producers will feed this winter.

Since there is a drought, buying hay is becoming a very high c o s t o p t i o n t h a t w o n ’t be financially viable for many producers.

The situation for cattle, and sheep producers, may

be to sell off portions of the herd/flock. A sell-off of course tends to push prices down and lower returns, and it also means the loss of herd genetics often created through years of a carefully laid out breeding program.

It’s a no-win situation for farmers needing pasture and hay to operate.

The situation is bad news for more than producers too.

While government is starting to respond with programming to help producers, they will not generate the incomes of a good crop.

Wi t h l e s s i n c o m e , farmers will not be spending money as they normally would, and since agriculture is an economic driver on the Prairies, it will hurt business.

Coming on the heels of the economic impact the COVID-19 pandemic has had the past 18 months, the drought is bad news for business too.

Bringing the beauty of the garden indoors I’m on a mission, gardeners.

I know many of you take a daily tour (sometimes more than one!) of your gardens, as I do, just to see what’s new.

We’ll stop to admire this or that, but often the beauty there never gets any further than the garden. So our mission, gardeners, if we choose to accept it, is to bring some of that beauty indoors. Yes, I’m trying to encourage all of us to step out of our gardener’s box and step into one of flower arranging.

Now don’t panic, I don’t mean that we should be creating majestic arrangements more suited to the lobbies of grand hotels or royal weddings! And I don’t mean the formal kind of display that many think of when they hear “flower arranging,” unless of course you enjoy that kind of “living art challenge” (I know I do!). I am talking about appreciating the beauty a plant can give us by bringing a little bit of the outdoors in, where we can see it and enjoy it.

I know sometimes we are reluctant to pick certain flowers from our gardens because we have been babying those plants along and if they finally produce a bloom, we don’t want to pick it! Or maybe we don’t want to destroy the overall look of a mass planting by taking flowers away. Or maybe sometimes we just don’t know what to do with the flowers anyway so we leave them where they are.

But this week, let’s challenge ourselves to bring

The Garden Grapevine something indoors. When I was a child, my darling Mom always gave me the task every few days of making a flower arrangement for the coffee table in the living room, and one for the kitchen table. No flowers in her beautiful and bountiful garden were “off bounds.” What fun that was!

Sometimes, it would be just a dainty vase of bachelor buttons, or maybe one fluffy marigold (“First Lady” was always her favorite) in a teacup. Whatever I made, Mom gave it pride of place in the house, and best of all, we enjoyed the flowers or leaves in a whole new way, each and every day.

Mom’s wonderful wisdom in assigning this job to me not only gave me confidence to just “go for it” and create something, but it also encouraged me to look at the garden in a different way. Mom had a very artistic eye and a great

sense of arranging plantings, using colours and textures for maximum effect; on my flower arranging expeditions I learned to appreciate all plants, whether flowering or foliage, in various seasons of their growth.

Sometimes our initial glance at the garden tells us “there is nothing here that I can use” at this time. But if we stay open to the beauty around us, we will suddenly see many possibilities: one hosta leaf in a slender vase; a few stems of beet leaves in a clear glass, so that the ruby stems are visible; maybe three small marigolds floating in a dessert dish; a few petunia blooms in a teacup; the spent blooms of clematis that turn into amazing fleecy clouds; or even an interesting dry, gnarled branch in a tall vase. Open your gardening eyes and see the shape, texture, and colours in the garden…not just the many tasks that need doing!

After a busy day in the garden, we can all attest to the fact that gardening is a physical hobby, with all the exercise that it gives us! New COVID cases mostly unvaccinated Wi t h t h e n u m b e r o f COVID-19 cases rising again in Saskatchewan, the Ministry of Health is reporting that those new cases and serious outcomes from those cases are overwhelmingly among unvaccinated people.

More than 90 per cent of all new cases and hospitalizations in Saskatchewan in July were unvaccinated or partially vaccinated people.

Ninety-five per cent of ICU admissions were unvaccinated or partially vaccinated, and 100 per cent of deaths were unvaccinated.

The Ministry of Health has updated the COVID-19 vaccination and breakthrough information for July 1-31, 2021.

Highlights include: • Of the 1,220

cases reported, 921 (75.5 per cent) were unvaccinated or tested positive within three weeks of receiving their first vaccination. One hundred and eighty-four cases (15.1 per cent) were partially vaccinated with one dose, while just 115 cases (9.4 per cent) were fully vaccinated.

• Of the 83 individuals hospitalized with COVID-19, 66 (79.5 per cent) were unvaccinated or tested positive within three weeks of receiving their first vaccination. Ten cases (12.0 per cent) were partially vaccinated with one dose, while just seven cases (8.4 per cent) were fully vaccinated.

• Of the 20 individuals admitted to ICU, 17 (85 per cent) were unvaccinated or

tested positive within three weeks of receiving their first vaccination. Two cases (10 per cent) were partially vaccinated with one dose, while just one case (five per cent) was fully vaccinated.

• Of the four deaths reported among people who tested positive in July, all four were unvaccinated or within three weeks of receiving their first vaccination. There were no deaths in individuals who were more than 21 days post first dose or fully vaccinated.

• July’s case numbers also indicate that about a third of Saskatchewan’s

cases were 19 years of age or under, and about 20 per cent were under 12 which is an age group that cannot be vaccinated at this time.

However, no one 19 years of age or under required ICU care or died due to COVID-19 during this period.

At this point in time, there are no COVID-19 vaccines approved for children under 12. All residents 12-plus are encouraged to be fully vaccinated to afford these groups the best circle of protection possible.

Children can contract, transmit and become ill with COVID-19 though the risk for serious health outcomes is lower than older populations. Those who are fully vaccinated, all

activities with children will be considered lower risk.

Transmissible diseases like COVID-19 are opportunistic: they will spread to and among under- and unvaccinated populations.

It’s critical that all eligible Saskatchewan residents get vaccinated.

Stick it to COVID All Saskatchewan residents 12 years and older are eligible for vaccination with second doses administered following a 28-day interval.

SaskWell and 211 team up to help with reopening anxiety The Government of Saskatchewan has now opened up the province, removing the majority of COVID-19 guidelines, including making masks optional and allowing businesses to operate at maximum capacity. Although to some people this is news that they have been waiting over 18 months to hear, others are skeptical about the “return to normal,” according to a release. Due to the current number of COVID-19 cases, the news of the Delta variant in the

south, or just the shock factor of going over a year with social distancing to virtually back to normal overnight, many residents are experiencing discomfort with this sudden change of lifestyle.

In an effort to help residents of Saskatchewan deal with the stress, anxiety and uncertainty that some may experience with the reopening of the province, SaskWell and 211 Saskatchewan are combining their resources in order to offer residents a holistic approach to conquering

mental health issues they may face, no matter the degree of intensity.

According to a recent government release, SaskWell is described as a free two-way texting wellness service which was developed with the intent to support residents of Saskatchewan during and beyond COVID-19, by providing them with mental health and wellness resources. Although the service was originally designed to offer general mental health and wellness support,

SaskWell has added social anxiety tips to help residents through this latest transition.

211 Saskatchewan is a free and confidential service, accessible through online (sk.211.ca), phoning 2-1-1 or texting 211, which links people within Saskatchewan with community services in their area, offered through social programs, communities,

non-clinical health care, or government programs.

With a centralized database of all available resources, 211 Saskatchewan makes it so residents are one search, call, or text away from finding the help they need. 211 Saskatchewan is a service of United Way Regina and United Way Saskatoon and Area.

Users who are looking for mental health support(s) through the 211 website can now be directed to SaskWell as a possible resource for supporting their mental

wellness. Similarly, if users of SaskWell are struggling with more than just reopening anxiety or need additional support, SaskWell offers 211 Saskatchewan as a resource for users to seek help through. There, users can quickly and easily find a wide range of helpful resources in their area.

Together, this texting service and 211 Saskatchewan are committed to helping all residents of Saskatchewan get the support they need during these fast-changing times to be “SaskWell!”

Will social media companies ever prioritize online abuse?

By Nick Kossovan Is it just me who believes we’ve lost our ability to have civil discourse?

Every day, we rely on social media platforms to engage with like-minded people, promote ourselves, our work, and/or business.

Unfortunately, the downside of increasing your visibility, especially when you wade into an online discussion with an unpopular opinion, is you become a lightning rod for online abuse. Online abuse can be especially relentless if you are a woman, identified as a member of a race, religion, ethnicity, or part of the LGBTQ+ community.

I believe social media companies can reduce, even come close to, eliminating, online abuse. The first step: Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, et al. becoming more serious and urgent about addressing the toxicity they’re permitting on their respective platform.

The second step: Give users more control over their privacy, identity, and account

history.

Here are five features social media companies could introduce to mitigate online abuse.

1. Educate users on how to protect themselves online.

I’ll admit social media companies have been improving their anti-harassment features. However, many of these features are hard to find and not userfriendly. Platforms should have a section within their help center that deals specifically with online abuse, showing how to access internal features along with links to external tools and resources.

2. Make it easy to tighten privacy and security settings.

Platforms need to make it easier for users to finetune their privacy and security settings and inform how these adjustments impact visibility and reach.

Users should be able to save configurations of settings into personalized “safety modes,” which they can

toggle between. When they alternate between safety modes, a “visibility snapshot” should show them in real-time who’ll see their content.

3. Distinguishing between the personal and professional.

Currently, social media accounts are all-encompassing of your professional life and personal life. If you want to distinguish between your professional and personal life, you must create two accounts. Why not be able to make one social media account that toggles between your personal and professional identities as well as migrate or share audiences between them?

4. Managing account histories.

It’s common for people to switch jobs and careers and their views over time.

Being able to pull up a user’s social media history, which can date back more than a decade, is a goldmine for abuse. Platforms should make it easy for users to easily search old posts and

make them private, archive, or delete.

5. Credit cards and/ or phone number authentication.

All social media platforms allow the creation of anonymous accounts.

Ironically, much of the toxicity permeating social media stems from people hiding cowardly behind anonymous accounts.

Anonymity enables toxic behavior by facilitating and backhandedly encouraging “uncivil discourse.”

Eliminating the ability to create an anonymous account would literally end online abuse.

Anonymity allows people to act out their anger, frustrations, and their need to make others feel bad, so they feel good. (I’m unhappy, so I want everyone else to be unhappy.). Being anonymous allows someone to say things they wouldn’t even think of or have the courage to, speak publicly, let alone face-to-face.

All credit cards and telephone numbers are

associated with a billing address. Social media platforms could prevent anonymous accounts by asking new joiners to input their credit card information, to be verified but not charged, or a telephone number to which a link, or code, can be sent to authenticate. (Email authentication is useless since email addresses can be created without identity verification.)

Undeniable fact: When people know they can easily be traced they’re unlikely to exhibit uncivil behaviour.

Yeah, I know—for many, handing over more data to social media giants isn’t appetizing, even if it eliminates the toxic behavior hurting our collective psyche.

Having to go through a credit card or telephone authentication will be pause for many to ask themselves why the feel they must be on social media. Such reflection is not a bad exercise.

Online attacks have a negative impact on mental and physical health, stops free expression, and silences

voices already underrepresented in the creative and media sectors and in public discourse.

Respective platform user guidelines (aka. Community Standards) are open to interpretation and therefore not enforced equitably. Content moderators (human eyes) and AI crawling (searching for offensive words and content) aren’t cutting it.

Social media companies can’t deny they could be doing a much better job creating a safer online environment. Unfortunately, a safer online environment will only evolve when social media companies begin taking online abuse seriously.

Hudson Bay rider tops at Calgary Stampede

By Calvin Daniels Yorkton This Week For the first time in more than a dozen years a Canadian claimed the bronze trophy in barrel racing at the Calgary Stampede.

The combination to accomplish the feat was rider Bertina Olafson and her horse Duke from Hudson Bay. Olafson posted a time of 17.247 seconds in the finals on July 18. Brittney Barnett of Stevenville, Te x a s f i n i s h e d i n s e c ond place with a time of 17.552 seconds, and Lindsay Kruse of F r o m b e rg , M o n t a n a i n third place with a time of 17.79 seconds.

“It’s still a surreal moment. I’m not sure it quite sunk in yet,” she said in an interview three days after her championship ride.” . . . It’s one of the biggest

accomplishments I’ll ever achieve.”

But Olafson still takes a calm approach to things.

“It’s not about the win, it’s about the experience,” she said, adding yes she wants to win “But, I don’t put the pressure on myself to win.”

Olafson said in that way if the results are not a cheque at an event she can focus on the positives of the experience rather than dwelling on the loss. For Olafson the win was like a monster big cherry on top of an already favourite ice cream sundae. From the time she returned to competition after her children had grown, Olafson had a dream, that was to one day compete at the Calgary Stampede.

“This was the first time I competed,” she said.

So it was a dream fulfilled to simply be in

Calgary.

Winning the $50,000 prize on the final day was a huge bonus, although Olafson had a feeling that it was a setting well-suited to Duke.

“Certain horses run better under certain types of conditions. I knew my horse rounds best in big arenas with long run-ins,” she said, adding that is what it was at the Stampede. The bigger space and especially the long run-in allow Duke to get up to speed.

“He really enjoys being able to open up,” said Olafson. “He likes big spaces.”

Of course Olafson knows her barrel racing partner well, as they have been together for years.

“I purchased him as a baby after he was weaned off his Dam (mother),” she said, adding initially

she purchased Duke with an eye to him becoming a stallion for her breeding program to raise barrel horses.

As a two-year-old he was actually mated to a half dozen mares, but then Olafson came to realize she wanted him as a riding horse, so Duke was gelded and a decade-long road to the Stampede win began in earnest.

The 46-year-old Olafson said at the time s h e w a s n ’t c o m p e t i n g , although she had been in gymkhana as a youth.

As a mother Olafson said she was too busy with her kids being what she terms “a hockey mom” doing whatever she could to help out. “We were very hockey-oriented.”

And then the children grew up.

“It was the empty nest. I was a little lost,” she said,

adding she turned to Duke and began barrel racing again. “It gave me something to do.”

And the duo did it well.

“The higher I kept going with him, I realized what he was capable of,” said Olafson. “I knew he had things to accomplish.”

If it sounds like Olafson tips the Stetson hat to Duke for most of their success, that is because she does credit Duke with most of it.

“I definitely give him most of the credit,” she said. “. . . If I didn’t have Duke I definitely wouldn’t have been at the Calgary Stampede.”

Olafson said her job is to make sure Duke is well-cared for so he can perform at his best, and then it’s up to him to cut the barrels close and to run hard.

So what makes a good

barrel horse?

“It’s the heart of the horse that makes the difference,” said Olafson adding she has seen every breed used in the sport and it still comes down to the heart the horse has.

Now that Olafson and Duke have won at the Stampede, what comes next?

That is a good question, as Olafson said the Stampede basically completed her list of goals, including Rookie of the Year honours in the sport in 2018, adding she needs to come up with a new list.

As the list is formulated, she will head out to rodeo some more, meaning a lot more miles for her and Duke.

“Hudson Bay’s not exactly on the beaten path,” said Olafson, adding most events are in Alberta or B.C.

Crops of the Parkland returns for summer

By Calvin Daniels Yorkton This Week A popular summer attraction for visitors to Yorkton, and for tourists just passing through, is back for another year.

Crops of the Parkland is something started nearly 25 years ago because there was an interest from travellers to learn more about the crops they saw in area fields, explained Tourism Yorkton Executive Director Randy Goulden at a July 14 press conference to officially launch this year’s crop plots.

“We were finding visitors who stopped in here were asking a lot of questions about the crops they were seeing,” she said.

Goulden said initially as a one-time farm girl herself she could answer some of

the questions, but there was clearly interest in providing more information.

It was Thom Weir who came up with the idea for crop plots, in conversation with former Mayor Phil DeVos, the pair scratching out a rough plan on a napkin at Robin’s Donuts.

Weir said it made sense to him to promote agriculture locally.

“Yorkton wouldn’t exist if it wasn’t for agriculture.

We are an agricultural community,” he noted at the press event.

So a few partnerships were forged -- including with the Yorkton Chamber of Commerce, and with the City of Yorkton, which provides the land adjacent to the Tourism Yorkton office for the plots, and agriculture industry volunteers -- and

Thom Weir explained lentils to interested visitors at the Crops of the Parkland display in Yorkton. the project was born.

The plots remain much as they have been; providing an opportunity to walk, explore and learn about

Saskatchewan crops and agricultural practices through informative signage.

It’s also a chance to learn how these crops contribute

to our province’s positions as a world leader in food production.

New this year is a display of live grain on the site of

Yorkton’s historic Flour Mill which traces the development of milling wheat from ancient Egypt through the 1800s to today.

The Kamsack Powerhouse Museum holds many treasures and oddities from days gone by. While some people may recognize the items right away, new generations may be scratching their heads – trying to guess what the strange and fantastic looking items could have been used for. The Kamsack Times will be showcasing a weekly photo guessing game that features some of the museum’s mystery items. Answers that explain what the item was once used for will be provided in the following week’s issue.

The artistic talents of pool staff member Kate Erhardt were tapped to create a fun and friendly mascot sign that brightens the area and greets visitors to the pool. The newest addition in the pool lobby was designed to increase safety for younger children in the water. Children must be seven years of age and at least as tall as the mascot indicates to enter the pool without an adult. Pool manager, Sheri Nikiforoff, shared on a Facebook post that the name of the blue and white shark mascot was settled as: Reggie.

To commemorate the newly upgraded pool and get your own photo with Reggie the Shark, there will be a grand opening event on Saturday, August 14. Everyone is invited to join in a free public swim from noon to 6 p.m. and the event will include ribbon cutting and cake, pool party games every hour and prize draws. Don’t worry too much about working up an appetite, as the Kamsack Air Cadets will be hosting a barbecue fundraiser running between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m.

Broncos survivors reunion photo goes viral John Cairns, Humboldt Journal Photos posted on former Humboldt Bronco Kaleb Dahlgren’s Facebook page have g o n e v i r a l r e c e n t l y. T h e p h o tos feature 13 members of the Humboldt Broncos, plus two additional individuals, in a yard in an unidentified location.

It is the first time that the 13 Broncos players who had survived the devastating April 6, 2018 bus crash have all been reunited since those events.

The photo was accompanied by the hashtag #Bel13ve. There had been other events in the aftermath of the bus crash in which surviving Broncos appeared, including

a trip to the NHL Awards in Las Vegas, but those did not include all the survivors as other Broncos continued to recuperate. The last Bronco to be released from hospital was Morgan Gobeil, 11 months after the crash.

The surviving Broncos in the photo include: Dalhgren, Gobeil, Graysen Cameron, Brayden Camrud, Bryce Fiske, Matthieu Gomercic, Xavier LaBelle, Layne Matechuk, Derek Patter, Nick Shumlanski, Tyler Smith, Ryan Straschnitzki, and Jacob Wassermann.

Dahlgren was assistant captain of the Broncos in 2018 and has written the book Crossroads about his experience with the team.

Submitted by Doug Elsasser Eaglestone Lodge residents, family members and staff assembled for an “appreciation and reopening” barbecue the afternoon of July 22 in Kamsack.

The event, held on a warm humid day, was well attended. Both gazebos and other sources of shade in the south courtyard were occupied by people in lawn chairs.

Eaglestone’s board of directors, with help from kitchen staff, organized the barbecue, cooked and served the hamburgers, hot dogs, salads, beverages, ice cream and cake.

“After being locked down for so long, we wanted to celebrate and thank our staff for all they did during the COVID o u t b r e a k l a s t w i n t e r, ” said board member and Kamsack’s mayor Nancy Brunt.

Food for the barbecue was donated by Harvest Meats of Yorkton, Lorne’s Butcher Block of Kamsack, and the Legacy Co-op grocery store.

Eaglestone Lodge is an assisted living facility that houses 23 full-care residents, plus several independent suite dwellers. The Lodge currently has rooms for seven more residents.

JJ Guy inducted into North American Fiddlers’ Hall of Fame JJ Guy of Saskatoon, originally from the Lintlaw area, was the first Saskatchewan resident to be inducted into the North American Fiddlers’ Hall of Fame (HoF).

“I was surprised for sure. To be inducted with my heroes, when I look at the previous people who have been inducted in there, fiddle heroes I had growing up. It’s very much an honour and a privilege for me to be with those people,” said Guy. Guy is from Saskatoon

but grew up on the family farm south of Lintlaw and attended Invermay School for his elementary and high school years. He got his beginnings and passion when his parents purchased him a half size Chinese Lark fiddle from Radio Shack in Wadena at the age of seven. His older sister Emma had always played the fiddle and he wanted to be like her.

He learned to play by listening to cassette taped music and he stated that he also learned a lot from the

family’s old-time friend Vic Mullen who played with the Don Messier Jubilee Band. Guy can recall Mullen stopping by the family farm and showing him a few lessons. He also recalls his great uncle Bob Scheller being helpful with encouragement and showing him more lessons on the fiddle. “Back in the day a fiddler received exposure and voluble experience from little sports days that would have fiddle contests or jam sessions,” recalled Guy.

His skills have come organically from listening, watching and learning from others around him for just over 30 years.

The Saskatchewan musician started playing in a band with his sisters Emma and Beverly at a young age, learned throughout high school, then went straight into teaching from high school. He was part of a couple of bands through his years which started with Highway 49 and Lone Tree Road but his big break came when

JJ Guy was inducted into the North American Fiddlers Hall of Fame and tours western Canada with Gordon Stobbe who is also a Hall of Fame inductee. he was asked to teach lessons at Emma Lake Fiddle Camp. From the camp his career excelled after meeting Gordon Stobbe, who is also an HoF inductee.

The duo hit the road and began touring and doing other music camps.

The two call themselves the Twin Fiddles and have made five albums together.

“If I was to say my best memory, it’s the whole thing. I’m pretty lucky I’ve had some pretty lucky breaks, so I have a pretty good life. I’m very happy,” said Guy. Long-time member of the fiddle community and one of the people who nominated him, John Tribe, said there are many reasons why he should receive the honour.

Tribe noted Guy’s techn i c a l a b i l i t y, e x c i t i n g performances, capacity to teach and his selflessness.

“Fiddling should be about fun. I always said if you’re not having fun fiddling, you’re not doing it right. And JJ has fun fiddling and it’s just enjoyable to be around him,” said Tribe.

One person is chosen each year to join the HoF who promotes, perpetuates and preserves fiddling. Out of over 150 applicants, Guy was selected as the 2021 inductee.

“He’s one of the top 50 fiddlers to be recognized

by the Hall of Fame and that’s really a great thing.

That means lots of people recognize that he is a talented musician,” said HoF spokesperson, Jackie Hobbs.

The inductee is known to play a variety of different music, sometimes even mixing in Metis and Flamenco styles. He grewup with old-time dance blue grass music which will always be his favourite but he has expanded into many different types of music including his own original music.

Guy hopes to one day take his talents south to expand his music knowledge and share his passion.

A plaque will be put up at the HoF with his name on it, joining many of his other fellow fiddlers who previously received the same title.

He also now travels the country teaching at camps, holding clinics, and has even hosted 66 virtual sessions so far throughout the pandemic called Jamming with JJ. “The online jam session reached out to many fiddlers and the music community in a time when everything was at a standstill and was very well received and still continues today. But, we have recently begun going back to in-person jam sessions and it feels so good to see everyone once again.”

BEREZOWSKI, Victor born March 12, 1927 - July 25, 2021 age 94 years. Victor was born in Kamsack, SK on March 12, 1927 to parents Paul and Alexandria Berezowski (nee Marteniuk). He was raised on a farm east of Kamsack, he resided there for many years and helped with the farm work. During the time Victor worked at several different occupations.

He worked at Madge Lake when the resort was being developed, cut pulp wood in Ontario, farmed his own land, operated heavy equipment including grading roads for the RM of Cote. After that he became a back hoe operator and worked at that till he retired. He built his own house in Kamsack in 1978, and resided there till March 2016. Victor enjoyed hunting, fishing and playing pool with his friends. Playing cards was always an enjoyable pastime for him. He is survived by his sister Caroline Meunier and brother Jerry (Mary) Berezowski and numerous nieces and nephews. He will be missed by those that knew him.

A private family graveside service was held on July 30, 2021 from Riverview cemetery, Kamsack, SK, with Karry-Ann Nunn as celebrant. OGLOFF - Walter, December 21, 1924 - July 14, 2021.

Walter was born on a farm south of Kamsack to William and Tena (nee Chutskoff). He attended Poplar Point School.

Due to the sudden death of his father, Walter was taken out of school at the age of 16 to run the family farm. In his 20’s, he joined a crew doing risky work in the B.C. gold mines.

He returned home safely and used his earnings to modernize the farm, being the first in the area to have a tractor. Walter met and married his life partner Katherine Derhousoff in 1950. Soon after, he attended classes at Moose Jaw, where he received his 1st Class Auto Body Certificate. Walter and Katherine moved from the farm to Kamsack in 1951 where he worked at an autobody shop. Two years later with a co-worker Walter built Western Auto Body Repair Shop. In 1961, he and a partner built the Lake Side Esso Service Station at Madge Lake, which was sold after 7 years of operation. In 1968 the partners also built Canora Auto Body. When the partnership was dissolved, Walter and Katherine stepped away from the Canora enterprise and became the sole owners of Western Auto Body Ltd. They in turn sold this business in 1974. With a passion for staying productive, Walter then worked several summers at Pickerel Point Boat Rentals at Madge Lake. During these years, he also put his experience to use taking on jobs replacing automotive glass. Not ready for retirement, in 1978 Walter and a partner built Kamsack Tire, a large modern sales and repair shop with two adjoining car wash stalls. The tire shop boasted being the first mobile tire repair operation in the area. Walter sold Kamsack Tire and took full retirement in 1990 after 10 years of operation in tire sales and service. Walter took great pride in his home, lawns and flower planters. He grew a bountiful garden including sixty tomato plants and cucumbers which he always shared with family and friends. Walter enjoyed camping and was an avid fisherman both summer and winter. His favourite fishing spot was always Madge Lake where you could find him with his fishing partners almost daily. Throughout the years Walter and Katherine enjoyed many sightseeing bus tours throughout Canada and the United States. Walter started with very little and worked extremely hard all his life. Many nights were spent working on additional projects at his businesses to provide those little extras for his family. He was a very dedicated and proud father. Together with Katherine he was blessed with three children, four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Walter leaves to mourn him his loving wife Katherine; sons Wes (Debbie) and Rick; brothers Bill and Peter (Charlotte); grandchildren Jody (Dallas), Chris, Ryan (Ashley), and Daniel (Jessica) and greatgrandchildren Kendyl, Kelcey, Kale and Eva, along with many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents William and Tena Ogloff; in-laws Peter and Anne Derhousoff; daughter Wendy Mason (Dan); sister Pauline Hilker; half sister Mary Dubasov; brothers-in-law Fred Hilker, Bill Dubasov and Peter and Mike Derhousoff; sisters-in- law Tena Burtnick, Vickie Derhousoff and Paulette Ogloff. Just as Walter fought hard for everything in his life, he continued to battle until peacefully passing at the Yorkton and District Nursing home. LUCAS - James (Jim) Gerard Lucas, dearly beloved husband of Judy Lucas, formerly of Kamsack, most recently Poplar Beach, Wakaw Lake, passed away at Royal University Hospital early in the morning on July 17 at the age of 74 years. Jim was born in Canora Saskatchewan on June 16, 1947 to Frank and Angeline Lucas. He was the youngest of 5 children. His dad, Frank Lucas was a superintendent of schools and when Frank began teaching at Normal school in Saskatoon (the old teacher’s college) the family moved to Saskatoon. Jim attended St. Joseph’s elementary school and St. Paul’s Boy’s High School. Jim met the love of his life, Judy and they were married on September 30, 1967. Jim and Judy moved to Kamsack, Saskatchewan when Jim was hired as a teacher in the Kamsack School Division. Jim taught History and English for the majority of his career, but mid-career he earned a Graduate Diploma in Library Science and became the resident Teacher Librarian for the Kamsack School Division and Kamsack Collegiate Institute.

Jim’s career spanned 31.5 years in the classroom as a teacher and then after retirement, Jim continued to substitute teach in Wakaw, St. Louis, and Cudworth. Jim had a deep respect and connection to the Canadian Armed Services. Having been a member of the local Sea Cadet Corps as a teen, he developed a love of the ocean and served as a member of the Royal Canadian Navy ship’s company on HMCS Unicorn. He was a life member of the Royal Canadian Legion and served in the Kamsack and Wakaw Legion branches. Before their move to Saskatoon, Jim served as Sergeant-at-Arms for the Wakaw Legion Branch. His beloved boat, “The Bonnie” could be seen on Wakaw lake flying the Red Ensign, the Canadian Flag and on occasion, a full sized HMCS white ensign. Jim was proud to be a Canadian and he proudly displayed the Canadian flag: on shore, on the boat, on tour, etc. While teaching in Kamsack, he enlisted in the Cadet Instructor Cadre and became a reserve Air force officer. He served as the Commanding Officer of 633 RCACS Kamsack as well as their Range Safety officer. Jim had a great staff and civilian committee, the result being the squadron won the Most Proficient Squadron in Saskatchewan as well as the Esprit de Corps awards - both of which, he was most proud. Jim was a passionate sportsman. He loved the great outdoors. He spent countless hours as a teen hunting game birds with his father Frank and older brothers, cousins and friends. After moving to Kamsack, he made fast friends with the Erhardt family who introduced him to a love of big game hunting. Jim had a deep respect for hunting, the environment; for him, hunting was very much a spiritual event. He made lifelong hunting buddies and hunted for elk and whitetail in the 2020 hunt. He was a great marksman. At the time of his death, he was still making plans to ‘join the 2021’ hunt and had been drawn for moose and elk. Jim loved to fish. When he was young, his dad would teach summer school at the University of Victoria and he loved to fish for salmon and other ocean fish. When he was a young boy, he spent summers fishing at Waskesiu and when his parents purchased the family cabin at Wakaw, he became an avid fisherman there. You could often find him fishing by himself in the early mornings or with sons, grandchildren, nieces and nephews, etc. Fishing competitions were known to happen among fellow fishermen and women… just ask Ed Lepp. In addition to hunting and fishing, Jim loved music, dancing with Judy or his granddaughters, golfing, swimming, reading, boating. Jim and Judy had a love of travel. They cruised in tropical destinations, vacationed in Mexico and Hawaii, and until his cancer diagnosis, spent some wonderful winters in Yuma Arizona, where again, he made friends and was active in many volunteer capacities.

Jim made many friends. He made lifelong friends while attending St. Paul’s Boys school. To this day, those same friends (Norm, Larry, Barry, Alan, Ian, Dave, Gary, Glen and others) remain among his closest friends. Jim made fast friends among his colleagues in the Kamsack School Division. As mentioned, former students and hunting buddies became lifelong friends of Jim and Judy’s. Jim and Judy desired to retire at the lake, and so after 30 years in Kamsack, they ‘pulled up stakes’, demolished the old cabin and built a lakefront home there. They were blessed with great friendships with their long-time neighbours the Normand family as well as numerous ‘lakers’ on their beach. Summers and holidays at the lake were reserved for family, but during the off-season and winters, had Jim and Judy connected to their lake friends in a variety of ways. Jim and Judy have treasured all the friendships they’ve made wherever they’ve hung their hats. Jim had a deep desire to ‘serve’ and take care of people. This manifested in the countless civic pursuits he had including: serving on the council for the Resort Village of Wakaw Lake, the Prince Albert Credit Union Board of Director, and serving as a member of the Parish Council and Finance Council for the St. Theresa’s Parish in Wakaw. Jim was a member of the Knights of Columbus and served in local and provincial roles as well. While teaching, Jim took on duties as an STF councillor serving the needs of teachers. One of Jim’s favourite Christmas activities was to Christmas carol for neighbours, deliver Christmas trees to widows and to deliver meals on wheels to shut-ins. As countless former students would attest, Jim served as mentor, life-coach, basketball and football coach, Commanding Officer for the local Air Cadet squadron, and had a profound impact on the teens he served. Jim demanded and expected a lot out of himself as an educator as well as his students.

In his classroom, he taught life lessons as well as curriculum. When his students graduated and succeeded, he felt the pride of a father for them as much as for his own children. Jim had an inborn sense of standing up for the ‘little guy’ and doing the right thing. “Don’t just gripe about it… do something about it” was his approach to many of life’s speed bumps. Within the family, Jim took on duties to provide long-time care for his in-laws, family members, etc. If Jim said he was going to do a job, he did it with his whole heart and soul and the job was done well. Jim had a huge heart and was very generous with his time. Jim took great pride in his family. He supported his children in their career and leisure pursuits. Family holidays often involved food, fun, family, and many, many laughs and memories. It’s no coincidence that his children and grandchildren have a love of the lake, fishing, watersports, hunting, Christmas carolling, making and cooking shishliki, making sausage, etc. He was a baby whisperer, hunter, protector and provider for his family. Jim and Judy had 4 children: Richard “Rick” Lucas (Yvonne) of Lloydminster; Christopher “Chris” Lucas of Sherwood Park, Alberta; Norman “Norm” Lucas (Tamara) of Saskatoon and Barbara (“Babs”) of Grey Creek, British Columbia. Jim and Judy had 9 grandchildren: Josh, Francis, Nick, Regie, Joe, Roni, Georgia, Carter and Ella. They also have three great-grandchildren: Taelyn, Mason and Jayden James. Jim will be lovingly remembered by his 4 siblings: Noreen Galvin of Osgood, Ontario; Don Lucas (Merle) of Saskatoon; Mary Ann Jones (Jack) of North Bay, Ontario; Robert (Bob) Lucas (Liz Harrison) of Saskatoon. Jim is survived by many cousins, nieces, nephews, hunting buddies, dear friends, valued colleagues and treasured former students. Donations in lieu of flowers can be made to the any of the following groups: The Wakaw Legion Branch, the Kamsack Branch of the Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation as well as the Canadian Cancer Society. Jim’s funeral was held at St. Philip Neri, Roman Catholic Church, 1902 Munroe Ave., Saskatoon. Fr. Ken Forster OMI was the presider. The funeral was live streamed and can be found on the St. Philip Neri Parish website. A memorial tribute video/slideshow can be found at www.hillcrestmemorial.ca. Jim and Judy’s son, Deacon Rick Lucas presided at his internment at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens in a private family service Friday, July 23.

Kamsack Times OBITUARIES

PALUCK, Allan born August 25, 1933 - July 24, 2021 aged 87 years. It is with great sadness the family of Allan Paluck announces his passing at the age of 87 on July 24, 2021. Allan Paluck was born on August 25, 1933 to Walter and Sylvia Paluck (nee Yastremski) in the Pretty View area. He was raised with his brothers, Lawrence and Kenneth, on a farm south of Pelly and attended Pines School.

On July 2, 1955 Allan married Florence Antifaev. In 1956, they moved to Castlegar, British Columbia where Allan was employed as a construction worker. Later that year they moved back to Saskatchewan to farm.

The family moved to Westbridge, British Columbia in 1958. Allan worked at a sawmill until they moved back to Saskatchewan in 1960 to buy the family farm. Allan and Florence had four sons, Ted, Robert, Terrance and Kevin. Over the years Allan ran and owned Allan’s Backhoe and Bobcat Services. He also operated the road maintainer for the rural municipality of St. Phillips for a few years while farming. Allan farmed until they sold the farm in 1980, and moved to Kamsack where Allan worked for the Town of Kamsack. They moved back to Pelly in 1981, when Allan got a job with the Village of Pelly as town foreman. They lived in Pelly until 1998 when they retired and moved back to Kamsack.

Allan adored and cared deeply for his wife, Florence. They were married for 57 years. Allan loved the farm and enjoyed operating his construction equipment. He loved his children and grandkids dearly. He was a compassionate, soft-spoken man who took great care of his family and was always willing to offer a helping hand. Allan is survived by his sons, Ted (Marilyn), Bob, Terry (Donna) and Kevin; five grandchildren, Adam (Kristin), Kira (Matt), Daniel (Sarah), Sarina and Delta; three great-grandchildren, Elliot, Oliver and Myles; brother and sister-in-law, Ken and Bev; sister-in-law, Katie Antifaev; and several nieces and nephews. Allan is predeceased by his wife; his parents; his brother and sister-in-law, Lawrence and Cecile; and brother-inlaw, Walter Antifaev. A family graveside service will be held at a later date. KidSport and Viterra team up to get kids active The KidSport Back to Sport with Viterra project has recently launched to ensure that kids have an opportunity to run, jump, learn and play through sport. The effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on families have increased the financial barriers associated with sport, according to a release . In the month of August, Viterra will match all donations to KidSport Saskatchewan up to $5,000 to get kids off the sidelines and into the game. Money raised stays in each local CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

Recall of frozen mango due to risk of Hepatitis A contamination Saskatchewan residents are being advised of a potential risk of contracting Hepatitis A from frozen mango products available for sale in Saskatchewan.

Car enthusiasts from across the region flocked to Stenen on July 25 for the sixth annual Rawhides Car Show to enjoy the sunny day and check out the 128 vehicles on display.

East Central Saskatchewan Crop Report Extremely hot dry conditions in the region have left the crops short and rapidly matured allowing for harvest to begin sooner than normal. Winter cereals are being combined and some are being cut for greenfeed along with many fields of oats, according to Saskatchewan A g r i c u l t u r e ’s w e e k l y crop report for July 27 to August 2. Field peas and lentils that were desiccated weeks ago are now ready to combine and producers will get into those fields soon as the heat continues to dry down everything very quickly.

There is a large concern that most crops did not have adequate moisture to fill heads and pods, and the expected yield for all crops is lower than average.

Rainfall was scattered throughout the region. The Allan area received the highest amount of rainfall t h i s w e e k w i t h 11 m m .

The Pelly area received 20 mm, Lanigan 14 mm and the Semans area 10 mm.

Topsoil moisture conditions have continued to deteriorate in the region.

Cropland topsoil moisture is rated as three per cent adequate, 37 per cent short and 60 per cent very short. Hay and pasture land topsoil moisture is rated as two per cent adequate, 33 per cent short and 65 per cent very short.

Pasture conditions are rated as 13 per cent fair, 41 per cent poor and 46

per cent very poor. Lack of moisture and heat stress has affected pasture

growth and producers are hoping for more rain.

Some have indicated concern with winter feed supplies due to reduced hay

yields this year.

The majority of crop damage during the reporting period was due to heat, lack of moisture and

wind.

Producers are busy haying, hauling grain and getting ready for harvest, concluded the report.
