FLOURISH KNOWLEDGE NETWORKING POWER PROTECTION - Editorial Dear Fitagians, e are now all set and done with our yearly activities under the banner of FITAG and our recently held “FITAG CRICKET TOURNAMENT 2014” proved it to be the best example of the same. This was the forth consecutive cricket tournament under FITAG banner. Can you believe this? – 20 teams playing in the tournament from across the state, about 30 matches played within 2 days starting from 8 AM in the morning to 6.30 in the evening for both the days, in total about 500 people visited the tournament including players!!!! Imagine the scenario where in all the 20 teams were present on the ground on 1st of March a n d everyb o d y enjoying t h e “LUTF” of such a wonderful tournament. 1st and 2nd March 2014 became historical dates as far as FITAG is concerned, due to all these what I have mentioned above. I must congratulate all the members who came there and played their relevant roles till the last. I must mention here that since last 3 years Gandhinagar team has been working very hard to make this event successful. Only with their dedicated efforts this scale of tournament....

The New Face of Data Security

Professionals: Women new report states that though women make up just 11 percent of the global information security workforce, they possess the communication skills and diverse academic backgrounds needed to bolster security performance in the enterprise. Market research firm Frost & Sullivan interviewed 5,814 information security professionals for "Agents of Change: Women in the Information Security Profession," which is sponsored by (ISC)2 and S y m a n t e c . Respondents came from businesses that had workforces of more than 500 employees. The research reveals that women's tendency to have strong communication skills and a broad understanding of the security field are essential to enhancing information security. It also notes that the industry is poised for transition and that women could be natural leaders. "One of the major conclusions in the research is that this industry is changing significantly, and women are in a good position to lead that change as

well as thrive in the changed environment," wrote Julie Peeler, (ISC)2 foundation director, in an email to Baseline. "For example, the information security industry was initially defined as a subfield in information technology; now the industry is evolving to include legal issues, risk assessment and compliance issues, and with that redefinition of the industry, new sets of skills are desired." Women's emphasis on the importance of training, as indicated in the study, shows that they believe education is critical across a workforce, not just for select security professionals. In fact, in seven out of eight categories— including those for cloud computing, mobile device management and information risk management—women were stronger advocates than men for workforce training. Only in one category, forensics, did women and men emphasize workforce education equally. In addition, female information security professionals reported that they were more likely to spend time handling governance, risk and compliance (GRC) issues. This responsibility typically requires planning across different departments and that may aptly fit women's commu-

nication skill sets. "When we look at where the field is heading in the future and how the lines are being blurred to includes things like risk management and GRC, the number-one sought-after skill set is that of a security analyst," Peeler said. "By and large, women are more likely to possess this skill set than men." The research also reports

that women are more likely than men to be employed in occupations such as technical or security advisors or consultants, executives, and project or operations managers, while men are more likely to be employed as security engineers, security systems administrators, network administrators, and network, security or software architects.

Time is Running Out on Windows XP

Windows XP: The End is Near ost small businesses are unaware of a very important technology milestone that’s fast approaching: It’s the end-of-life (EOL) for a portfolio of Microsoft products including Windows XP and Office 2003. This past April, Microsoft announced that it would terminate all support and updates for the Windows XP, Office 2003 and anything Server ‘03 (such as Windows Small Business Server 2003) in a year’s time: on April 8, 2014. The milestone is significant because of

M

what occurs on April 9, 2014. When the April 8 deadline passes, small businesses that rely on those technologies (slightly more than 37 percent of all desktops and notebooks run on Win XP) assume a lot of risk. Simply stated, you are on your own. No more “Patch Tuesday” software and security updates, out-of-band emergency updates or product support. And that’s where the security risks—the zombies, as it were—lurk. The Risk of Running Windows XP

Guest Column Naishadh Diwanji, Past President, ACMA ndiwanji@pacecomp.com

ITAG was formed few years ago at a time when members of all city associations like ACMA, BITA, SITA, and many others felt the need to remain together and establish relationship with state government. The purpose was to establish a federation of all associations in Gujarat and represent IT fraternity to state government. Members' views needed to be considered at state level initially and national level ultimately. Another objective was to bring members together, share their happiness and sorrows so that all members had equal opportunity irrespective of size and location. Taluka level associations could also take advantage of federation in terms of knowledge, growth potential as well as sorting out issues with vendors and distributors. Time has now come to evaluate FITAG performance so we can take it fast forward. Score card is quite inspiring least to say. Members have come together, size has not become a limitation, small town associations have come forward to share and acknowledge, participation at annual get-together has improved, issues have been shared, relationship with government has also improved and inter action increased. These are all positive signs and give us lot of encouragement. There have been cases when theft and fraud were eliminated due to timely information to all associations. We still have a long way to go to get recognized as a force, a united force such that no vendor/distributor can take us for granted, they are forced to take our views consider them well before unilaterally deciding on any issue. For this to happen all members and member associations will have to improve internal communications. Fortunately this does not cost anything thanks to internet and emails. Question is to think, understand, have impartial views with an open mind and convey same without considering personal benefits. Let us not talk of big things, start with small steps which have long lasting effects on our business i.e. Continued on page 3...

Computer malware, like the Melissa virus of a generation ago (the heart of the Windows 98 era before Windows XP) used to be mere annoyances. In today’s rapidly changing geopolitical landscape, the stakes are dramatically higher with much more information at play—and the bad guys use technology as a central attack vector. Computing habits have evolved over the past 10-plus years to the point where we “trust” technology with more

financial information and personal data. You have much more to lose than you did when Windows XP was first released back in 2001. With the higher stakes, hackers (which now include competitors and foreign governments) have much more to gain. Online backroom chatter already concerns hackers creating new malware to exploit Windows XP et al after April 9th when Microsoft ceases all product support. Windows XP EOL Reality So just what does EOL mean? It means that Microsoft and Independent Software Ve n d o r s (ISVs), along with hardware manufacturers, are done with Windows XP and anything ‘03. On the security-side, beginning April 9th, these unsupported and

unpatched environments are vulnerable to security risks. On the software application side, ISVs will not provide support for Windows XP and ‘03 generation apps; they will encourage you to “get modern,” by which they mean application upgrades. That’s because the newer applications can do so much more stuff. And don’t forget that Windows XP-specific virus definition files, created in conjunction with Microsoft and distributed to anti-virus ISVs, are also off the table after April 8th.

FITAG Times Review Hello Fitag, Respected Fitag President & General Secretary, This is a very good approach by fitag President Mr.Gaurang Vyas for FITAG Times. - Editorial Continued from page 1.. within two days can be completed. Three cheers for them, they deserves the complements........... Team Valsad has taken the cup this year who was sponsored by Supertron Electronics Ltd and team Gandhidham became runners up who was sponsored by Smart Station. The best portion of the event was the unique and similar clothing made for every single player who was playing the tournament, a track suit for all the 20 teams in different colours were sponsored, made and delivered by AKT Backuper. The person who represented AKT, Mr. Gaurav, did participated actively in all the activities. He has promised FITAG to support in future also about any kind of events. I urge more and more companies like AKT to come forward to support FITAG and take advantage of their strength and networking. Once again, Nandakbhai, proved to be a true mentor of FITAG pursued all the players to help clearing second ground, which was occupied with a just finished government program. It must have taken 3 more hours to clear the material off ground and FITAG could resume play in that

ground, had FITAG teams would have not taken up the charge and cleared most of the material by them selves. Nobody can share a better example of strength of an organization like FITAG. We are becoming a movement then just being a federation. Hats off........ FITAG team & Nandakbhai...... A photographic coverage is brought to you on page nos. 6,7 and 8. The success of FITAG Cricket tournament has proven once again that our IT fraternity can be united on a common platform if need arises and enjoy the occasion to the best. We are introducing a guest column in FITAG times from this edition, where in we will invite seniors within industry as well as experts from outside to give their views on FITAG, FITAG Times and the present and future of the industry. Shri N.R.Diwanji, former president ACMA and Founder and CMD of Pace Computers Pvt. Ltd, is the first such guest to share his vision and knowledge with us. Hope this new addition will be useful to all and add value to the readership. Wishing all of you a happy holy in advance and wish you a great deal of business after holy.

Fitag thanks all member associations to support antipiracy drive & authorize FITAG to deal in this regard in future.

Continued from page 1... The study also showed than more male respondents had undergraduate degrees in computer and information sciences, engineering and engineering technologies. In contrast, female respondents had more degrees in business, math, the social sciences and communications. Peeler wrote that she once spoke with a senior executive at a large firm who told her, "I'd rather recruit someone with a liberal arts [degree] because I can teach them the IT skills, but I can't always teach an IT person the human skills." In response, she pointed out that "companies need to be flexible in their recruiting practices and policies." Continued from page 2... If you want a deeper understanding of Microsoft’s decision, you can read the official site, but I’ll “translate” Microsoft-speak into the language of small business. The first question everyone asks is: why did Microsoft elect to EOL Windows XP and anything ‘03? Cynics in the small business community smell an artificial revenue opportunity where the EOL deadline benefits only Microsoft. However, I can offer balance on that perspective. Simply stated, the world has changed since 2001. If you agree that a technology generation roughly equals five years, then Windows XP is entering its third generation of service. With the increased sophistication of both software applications and hacker methods, XP’s core operating system building blocks no longer constitute a valid design. To be honest, I’m puzzled why Microsoft didn’t EOL these products earlier. If your business runs Win XP or any ‘03 product, you can’t afford to sit on this information. April 8 is coming faster than you’d like. Beware of the April 9th zombies, and start discussing your postWindows XP and ‘03 plans—now.

Financial Discipline: Don't over trade beyond your capacity. If you come across or notice such activity inform FITAG in time. Look for long term solutions and not for short term gains. If check returns twice due to fund not sufficient, inform FITAG immediately, alert managing committee of your association. E. Charge and collect bank charges. 2. Self development: A. Read trade magazines regularly. B. Arrange and attend self development courses for self as well as for staff. C. Understand products well and be technically competent. D. Meet vendors and distributors regularly for this purpose and request them to arrange such talks using their resources. 3. Manage customer relations: A. Never try to take customer for granted. B. Give as much details as possible. C. Remain close to customer and not to vendor. So many things can be said but above all is the will to improve self as well as our trade image. Currently it is extremely low and poor. We are responsible for this and only we can correct this by changing ourselves first. We need to understand forthcoming trends. Cloud, Storage, SAS, integrated services, end to end solutions, security solutions are the keys to future. Box selling days are gone and unless we change, unless we upgrade ourselves we will not survive. We still can have decent business provided we keep our eyes and ears open and accept changes, changes in thinking, changes in approach and changes in attitude with others. Start contributing to this magazine by letting me know what you did not like and what you liked. Have a great year end business. <

Saturday 15 03 2014 The traditional PC industry saw its sharpest decline ever in 2013, and the sales drought is expected to continue through 2018, IDC reported Tuesday. FLOURISH KNOWLEDGE NETWORKING POWER PROTECTION

PC Market Fell Hardest in 2013: IDC he firm said that PC shipments fell by 9.8 percent overall last year, the sharpest drop on record. While the fourth quarter actually performed better than expected, IDC said that sales dried up in emerging markets, dipping 11.3 percent. This is evidence that tablets and phones are cutting into sales all across the world, IDC said. In total, IDC reported that 315.1 million PCs shipped in 2013, and that 295.9 million are expected to be sold in 2014, a 6 percent dip. By 2018, IDC said, the PC market should drop to annual sales of 291.7 million units. IDC said that its projections are actually rosier than originally predicted--but that's small consolation to companies that have banked their fortunes on selling PCs.

T

Overall, 2013 PC sales were expected to decline by 10.1 percent. "Emerging markets used to be a core driver of the PC market, as rising penetration among large populations boosted overall growth," said Loren Loverde, vice president of IDC's worldwide PC tracker service, in a statement. "At the

moment, however, we're seeing emerging regions more affected by a weak economic environment as well as significant shifts in technology buying priorities. We do expect these regions to recover in the medium term and perform better than mature regions, but growth is expected to stabilize near zero percent, rather than

driving increasing volumes as we saw in the past." Interestingly, Microsoft chief financial officer Amy Hood told analysts that for the fourth quarter, PC sales for emerging markets actually out-paced so-called mature markets like North America. Stacy Smith, Intel's chief financial officer, said at the

fitagtimes@fitag.in

time that most mature market sales were coming from desktop PCs. Those markets have reached "saturation points on tablet penetration," but that this point hasn't been reached in emerging markets, Smith said. In making its projections, IDC said it factored in a number of variables, including concerns about the impact of slower economic growth; the culmination of some large projects; and conservative expectations for factors like touch capability, migration off of Windows XP, and continued pressure from tablets and smartphones. IDC's definition of a PC includes desktop, notebooks such as ultrabooks, and other portable PCs that include non-detachable hardware keyboards. Tablets such as the iPad are excluded.
