season outlook

assistant Coach Cody Piechocki

The 2012 Kalamazoo Valley Cougars enter this season hungry to improve on last year’s season. “Although we were 28-23 overall as a team and finished 15-15 in our conference, we missed the regional tournament by one game,” said longtime coach Bernie Vallier. “The regional is one of our yearly goals and although we were right there with the other teams, we did not make it.”

baseball

This year’s team will start at least six sophomores and three freshmen at any given time. In addition, ten new pitchers were brought in to replace last year’s sophomores who have moved on. “Last year, our freshman pitchers (now sophomores) were a combined 4 wins and 7 losses, which meant our sophomores had to carry the weight in victories,” Vallier said. The new arms should make an immediate impact and contribute greatly to the team’s success. Offensively, the team should be able to provide some excitement and do what is necessary to succeed. “Top to bottom, we should have a proven bat that can do some damage within this lineup,” Vallier said. “If the players counted on can play at the expected level both at the

plate and in the field, we certainly could have a lot of fun this season. Our guys did well in the fall, with some real surprises from some unexpected fronts. As a result, we will have some depth as a total team, with some combinations if we so choose.” With improvements to the outdoor complex and fields taking place, Vallier said he thinks it is imperative that Kalamazoo Valley baseball be as prosperous as possible. “Winning is contagious and a winning attitude can be infectious. I surely plan on us giving this our best effort and making the best of a golden opportunity. We hope to see as many fans as possible and give you a good show,” the coach said.

season outlook We have six returning players who contributed greatly on last year’s team, winning the school’s first ever MCCAA State Championship & finished tied for first place in conference. We have added a very talented-fast group of freshman. The 2012 Cougars will be the fastest and deepest team we have coached and will continue the tradition of working hard and playing with pride. This group is a special group with one goal in mind, winning Nationals. I believe they are determined enough to make the necessary sacrifices to make their goal come true. We will be a very passionate team that plays with great energy and excitement.
