ABOUT MY CLIENTS

RESIDENTIAL KITCHEN DESIGN

COLOR THEORY

FLOOR PLAN

The clients that I have designed this kitchen for are two young newlyweds that recently graduated from college in New York City. Ava (26) and Callum (28) are both very athletic and have two golden retrievers. This couple has decided to move to Austin, Texas as the homes in this city are more spacious and often have large backyards which will be beneficial for the dogs. Although the couple is moving out of the big city of New York, they still wanted to feel at home in this new place. After talking with the couple they happily agreed that an art deco style would be perfect for their new kitchen as it is a popular design style in New York and will provide a luxurious environment in their new home.

Green is a luxurious color that represents new beginnings and growth as well as promotes relaxation, peace, and clarity. The color green is known to aid those suffering from anxiety, which one of my clients often struggles with. I feel as though this is a good color choice for this space as it has the ability to balance emotions, refresh the mind, and ease tension.

REFLECTED CEILING PLAN

Mustard yellow is often associated with warm and happy emotions and has the ability to uplift people and bring joy to them. This shade of yellow not only is able to create a comfortable and relaxing environment but it is also known to bring energy, happiness, and elegance into a space.

UNIVERSAL DESIGN

CONCEPT STATEMENT To create an open-concept kitchen design that maximizes the space provided. The design will use colors such as mustard yellow and green to promote a sense of stability and growth. Utilizing bold colors such as those mentioned, the space will successfully encompass the art deco style.

When designing spaces such as kitchens, it is important to create a universal design, otherwise known as a design that promotes accessibility. In the kitchen, I included a microwave drawer allowing people of all heights access to the microwave rather than having one installed in the upper cabinets. The kitchen design is very spacious and includes a 5 foot turn-around between the island and the countertops for easy access to both the sink and the stove.

ABOUT MY CLIENTS

BIOPHILIC DESIGN

My clients, Amber and Taylor, are moving from Dallas, Texas to Grand Rapids, Michigan. The two girls will be attending college in Michigan and will be living in the same complex as their two older brothers. My clients will be full time students in the upcoming semester; therefore, it is important to create an environment that will allow them to focus and study efficiently. One of my clients often struggles with anxiety and this being the first time living on their own, they are looking for a space that feels safe and provides comfort.

Biophilic design is a concept used to increase occupant connectivity to the natural environment while improving physical, emotional, and intellectual well-being. When biophilic design elements are applied, stress levels are reduced, and creativity is enhanced.

CONCEPT STATEMENT To create an open-concept design that minimizes anxiety and stress by incorporating biophilic design features. The use of neutral colors and natural lighting will increase occupant connectivity to the natural environment, therefore, providing a sense of comfort to the clients.

REFLECTED CEILING PLAN

Day-lighting Studies have shown that spaces with access to natural light have positive effects on human well-being. When day-lighting practices are used effectively, studies have shown that students do better on exams, learning is elevated, and people tend to think clearer and overall engage more when performing varying tasks and activities. Color Colors that enhance the beauty of nature connects the user to the outdoors and boosts health and wellbeing. People are shown to be less anxious and stressed, have better concentration, and overall positive mental health. Using receding hues of purples, blue, greens, and various neutrals that mimics nature enforce biophilic designs approach to wellbeing. Living Architecture The use of plants in an indoor space promotes indoor air quality as well as improves one’s aesthetic perception of said interior environment. Living architecture is shown to help reduce thermal costs with shielding direct sunlight that causes glare and heat build-up. Use of certain plants and greenery helps reduce VOC’s that are released in the air and can cause lung infections and stress.

SCM OFFICE DESIGN

SPRING 2022

CONCEPT STATEMENT The concept for this office design is to create a productive environment. In order to do so, plants and greenery are placed throughout the space to incorporate outdoor elements into the interior space, as it has been proven to decrease stress in the workplace. Incorporating colors inspired by nature such as shades of green, blue, and brown have been shown to increase attention span and concentration levels. (Coster, 2015). It is important to design a space that allows room for advanced, up to date technology which provides positive reinforcement for the workplace (Wilson, 2000). In order to create a productive environment, clutter and distractions should be kept to a minimum (Wilson, 2000). Installing adequate storage and shelving for the designers will allow any folders, books, or other design tools to be neatly organized and stored away from the workspace.

REFLECTED CEILING PLAN

The concept for the break room design is to create a comfortable environment. In order to do so, a seating area is designed to allow for relaxation during break time. Access to a space that allows for comfort and relaxation leads to positive stimulation (Wilson, 2000). Designing the break room in an area with an abundance of natural light can promote feelings of peace and relaxation and contributes to energy savings by reducing the use of artificial lighting (Yeh, 2014).
