PORTFOLIO 2019-2023 UNIVERSITY OF NORTH TEXAS KAITLIN JAY HORNSBY

Hello! My name is Kaitlin Jay Hornsby. I am currently a senior interior design student at the University of North Texas. Interior design has been an interest of mine since I was young. I spent a large part of my teenage years rearranging my room, designing houses on a phone app, and admiring the unique feelings interiors created. During my senior year of high school and freshman year of college, I took some entry level classes that confirmed my passion for interior design and led me to where I am today. I believe good design can spark a new perspective in once an empty space. The emotion and ambiance that designers are able to deliver into an interior space is what inspires me. I want to help create that special feeling!

Retail Fossil Flagship Store

Fall 2020 - Sketch Up - Individual Project

ABOUT THE PROJECT

In this project we were asked to design Fossil’s flagship store located in Dallas, Texas. This location would hold their exclusive, limited time merchandise. The design needed to be the most unique and experimental store in the chain, so new aspects were introduced. Fossil stores usually use neutral colors and darker tones throughout. In this store, I wanted to introduce bolder colors, patterns, and textures that bring excitement to Fossil’s special items. The requirements needed within this space include minimum of one restroom, storage, point of sale area, watch repair spot, and merchandise display.

CONCEPT STATEMENT

The goal of this Fossil flagship store, is to create an alluring and innovative environment that reflects the company’s mission and creates a unique, timeless design. In order to achieve this, bold, contrasting colors will be implemented to evoke interest and grab shoppers attention. Furthermore, an exclusive watch repair area will be included for guests to feel welcomed and comfortable. To attain an innovative environment, new elements of colors, patterns, and shapes will be included on top of some of the original aspects of the Fossil brand. Additionally, personal touches, such as Fossil timeline pictures, and a written mission statement will display the progress of the company.

Residential Tropical Kitchen Retreat

Fall 2021 - Revit - Individual Project

ABOUT THE PROJECT

The client for this project is a retired couple finally living out their dreams and moving to Hawaii. The first spot they would like to renovate is their kitchen. For them, the kitchen is the heart of their home. They will be hosting friends and family often as well as cooking homemade meals daily. The couple plans to age in place, so easy to use features is a must. In addition, they have 12 grandkids and two large dogs, therefore durability and stain resistant materials should be included. Joe and Isabella have expressed their love for coffee, so including a private coffee bar would be ideal. Lastly, they mentioned the main reason they made this decision to retire in Hawaii is because they wanted to relax and be with nature. For this reason, making sure the view remains the focal point of the overall kitchen design is super important.

CONCEPT STATEMENT

The objective of this kitchen design is to create an intuitive, inclusive, and biophilic environment. In order to achieve this, easy to use appliances with sound and light notifications will be installed, along with soft closing cabinets. Additionally, a 9 inch toe kick with an optional stepping stool will be built in. To attain a biophilic design, a sliding glass door will be implemented as an option to eliminate the line between outdoors and indoors. Also, earthy, natural colors and materials will be brought in to connect homeowners with nature.

Hospitality The Metropolitain

ABOUT THE PROJECT CONCEPT STATEMENT

“The Metropolitain” is an American-French cuisine located in the Dallas, Texas. The design is inspired by the Art Nouveau movement in early 20th century France. In this restaurant and bar design, the goal is for it to be a comfortable and functional space for guests to socialize and dine in. The theory of prospect and refuge is taken into consideration throughout the project. Creating some sort of physical and acoustical privacy between tables is a fundamental element to creating a practical space.

The goal for our restaurant is to create an intriguing and comfortable environment for the guests to socialize and dine. To achieve this, optimal lighting levels will be implemented in each space to set different emotions and experiences. Studies have found that purposefully designing in light layers can influence guests’ comfort and satisfactions rates. Lighting also emphasizes and creates interest to featured areas.. Next, comfortable seating that takes into consideration materials and ergonomics, will be included. It is found that the overall well-being of a customer can be heavily influenced by the seating design and materials used. Additionally, enjoyable seating leads to guests staying longer and spending more money. Finally, a variety of visual and acoustical barriers will be implemented to separate tables and provide privacy to guests. Research indicates that tables in a more private locations of a restaurant tend to have higher satisfaction rates and help customers feel more relaxed.

VLK Architcts Headquarters

Fall 2022 - Revit - Individual Project

ABOUT THE PROJECT

For this project, we were instructed to designed a new commercial office headquarters for a client of our choosing. I used VLK Architects as my “client” and project inspiration. The official site used is HOK’s office floor in downtown Dallas. The floor plan is about 25,000 square feet. The goal for this project was to improve our space planning skills at a larger scale. It was also very oriented towards creating a space that best fit our specific company and client. Each design choice made was to help create a productive, flexible, and comfortable environment for employees and guests.

CONCEPT STATEMENT

To create an environment that is productive, flexible, and comfortable. To help encourage a productive environment each employee will have access to plenty of natural daylight. This has been shown to increase the overall well-being of workers and help them focus. Additionally, acoustical treatments will be implemented to bring privacy to spaces. To achieve a flexible environment, multiple seating options will be available to try and accommodate everyone's daily needs. Also, a variety of spaces for collaboration with different levels of privacy will help improve teamwork quality. Lastly, to create a comfortable environment enjoyable colors and materials will be used that energize employees, but do not overstimulate them. Each worker will also have a designated personal space. This makes each worker feel more in control and therefore more pleased.
