Spring 2019

Spring thoughts on golf

This winter we were not idle having the good fortune to “have” to go to Florida to see what was new and great at the annual PGA Golf Merchandise Show in Orlando. We tried out Sun Mountain’s slick finn cycle that can make golfers feel like they are masters of the track as they (and their clubs) zoom to their ball and we browsed the racks of several apparel companies like Ahead, Cutter & Buck and vineyard vines, who continue to introduce great new colors and fabrics while romancing high tech blends and cottons. And once again, we stopped to see the latest audacious fashions from Loudmouth. Their Baker’s Dozen doughnut and Camo patterns that are sure tobring out your wild side. (Get lost in the woods much? Camo pants and skorts are made for you!) Manufacturers like Cobra, Tour Edge and TaylorMade came through again with clubs said to go farther and truer. Sweet. Loved the Clicgear carts rendered in bright yellows, oranges, greens and other cool colors. They fold up easily as well so you can no sweat pop them in your trunk. Just check out our roundup on pages 6 & 7. Read about the hottest event in women’s golf, the Solheim Cup, this year to be played in September at Gleneagles, Scotland on the Centenary Course and get the latest on the new golf rules from Tom Gorman, a 30-year member of the PGA of America Rules Committee. Welcome aboard, Tom. An interesting twist to the PGA Show was the addition of a section covering raquet ball sports. In particular: padel. Padel is a cross between tennis, paddle tennis and pickle ball. It’s very hot in Spain and is spreading to the US. Since it’s a sports activity and improves all over health, it seemed a good fit for the show. We plan to let you know more about it in the next issue. Please email any golf news you want to share including holes-in-one, photos, tournament results and anything else you think would be of interest to other golfers like you. We love hearing from you. And if you have a special event planned, let us know. CNY Golfer is for you after all. Smooth swinging,

U.S. Hickory Open Golfers Excited About Belvedere

Historic Belvedere Golf Club in northern Michigan, which has hosted an annual Society of Hickory Golfers major championship since 2006, will host this year’s U.S. Hickory Open on June 20-22. “Belvedere members embrace the event, and they completely shut down the course for three days allowing us to compete with complete access,” said Ernie Ernst, chairman of the U.S. Hickory Selection Committee who lives in Neenah, Wis., and winters in Phoenix. The U.S. Hickory Open annually attracts an international field of golfers who play with antique pre-1935 hickory shafted golf clubs— Brassies, Spoons, Bulldogs, Jiggers, Cleeks, Niblicks, & Mashies that were found in the bags of the 1920’s golfer or authentic replica hickory clubs. Belvedere is the only club in the U.S. to have as many as 44 antique hickory club players. Competitors dress in period appropriate apparel, including knickers, ties and jackets. The Society of Hickory Golfers celebrates and promotes the hickory game of the 1910s – 1930s. Dennis “Marty” Joy II, the head golf professional at Belvedere and a competitor in hickory tournaments, said, “Here at Belvedere we have the most hickory society golfers of any club in the country,” he said. “We have 44 men and women who are members here who play with antique hickory golf clubs. Conservative estimates of the total number of hickory players in the world now total about 3,000. “It is not for everybody,” said Ernst. “It’s more for the person who loves the game, especially enjoys the history and hickory allows a tremendous outlet for that passion.” The number of tournaments you can play in has grown tremendously. Belvedere was established in 1925 and designed by renowned golf course architect William Watson. It has been recognized as one of the best golf courses in the Midwest and is best known in Michigan for hosting 40 Michigan Amateur Championships. Visit belvederegolfclub.com or hickorygolfers.com

Browsing the PGA Show

Year after year, those in the golf industry go through the routine of covering the massive PGA Golf Merchandise Show held at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando in January. We walk miles of aisles, checking out products from 100s of exhibitors. We go to seminars, listen to experts espouse on the state of the industry, scope out what is the latest and greatest, take lots of notes and photos and grab some samples. And each year a few items emerge as truly new and worthy of talking about. Our job is to let you know what is out there that may be of interest to you and help you improve your game. Here’s what we found.

Clubs

Each manufacturer typically comes out with new, updated versions of last year’s lines, touting the “wow” factor to grab attention. You have to ask yourself will XYZ hybrid give me 10 yards more in distance or will this wedge guarantee I will get out of the bunker everytime? Probably not. Unless your clubs are really outdated with stiff shafts when you should be using graphite, and forged blades when cavity back would be more forgiving for you. But ask your pro. And sometimes you just feel ready for new clubs. That’s when you look to a manufacturer like

Considered the “Cadillac” of balls, OnCore balls are rivalling the big boys when it comes to quality, distance and feel. OnCore, a Buffalo-based company, offers golfers choices including the Caliber; the Avant55 promising lower compression and softer feel without loss of distance; thePremium Elixr for the ultimate in velocity and distance; and their soon-to-come Genius Golf Ball giving you GPS locator technology plus feedback data on your performance. oncoregolf.com Titleist was also on hand to boast about their new 2019 Pro V1 and Pro V1x golf balls engineered for more speed.

Techy stuff

Carts

Sun Mountain Motor Sports has another solution to speeding up golf and making it easier to get around: FinnCycle. It uses the same battery you can find in Tesla cars: a lithium 18650 capable of lasting 36 holes. “It can be so fast (tops out at 15mph) and so much fun, you won’t want to do it any other way,” said Rick Reimers, the cycle’s creator who added “It is named after my dog, Finn, who is full of fun.” Least you worry about liability, each rider resolves all liability through a policy accessed on an app. Talk about speeding up golf! sunmountain.com Tour Edge, where you can find reasonably-priced well designed clubs that come with a lifetime warranty. And it only takes 48 hours from custom fitting to delivery. Their newest design in the CBX T3 series featuring a deeper face, more compact head and shorter surface area from heel to toe, makes this an ideal fairway wood for usage off the tee on tight holes and for those who seek a more penetrating flight off the deck. It has a classic profile yet delivers the same lower launch angle and low spin rate as the popular 167cc CBfairway wood. touredge.com KBS Shafts marry well with Tour Edge design for all golfers. And note: Straight shafts deliver more energy than graduated shafts.

Balls

Clicgear pushcarts not only look smart, they fold easily into a compact “package” you can easily store in the back of your car or garage. Vibrant colors like yellow, limegreen and orange coordinate with golf bags. And you’ll love their accessories like cooler bags, shoe brushes,, seats and more. clicgear.com

Fourball cops the prize for the Most Innovative product with their mobile app described as “Tinder for golf” that helps connect golfers to other golfers to meet new people and helps facilities reach a greater target market. Tag Marshall keeps track of how fast golfers are playing allowing better course management. Other factors like wind and course conditions including height the grass is cut also figured into the stats. Each golfer is given a tag allowing marshalls to keep track of how the course is moving on their portable devices. tagmarshall.com.

Grips

Working out of his garage, the company was established in 1925 by Bob Lamkin’s grandfather. The company has continued to grow with its innovative technology including its new fingerprint technology that makes Lamkin grips feel good even in the cold. You can hold the club with a light grip and still have control. Ask about their new plus size grips with a reduced taper profile. Lamkingrips.com

Simple but Smart

Corkcicle sells a variety of insulated drinkware products and bags such as backpacks, totes and duffels. What I particularly like is their long icicle-looking thing you put in the freezer than pop into your wine bottle after opening it to keep your wine chilled. It works especially well for sippy drinkers taking it slow and easy in the hot sun. No ice Golfers try out Tour Edge’s new clubs at the Orange bucket needed. And what a great County National Golf Center during Demo Day of the tournament gift. corkcicle.com PGA Show.

Handbags

Men’s Shirts

Ahead scores well in the apparel department. The logoed collection it produced for Sea Island is typical with a color-coordinated palette of Concord, Carbon and True Navy. Check out aheadweb.com

One of the more standout handbags on floor was from Capri Designs. They come in different shapes and sizes and are PVC clear seethrough bags with minimal trim in various colors and materials like coated cotton canvas, leather and carry straps. Important to note: this is one time you’ll want to hide any little personal items you want to keep private in smaller pouches as the contents of Capri bags are totally visible. Happily the smaller accessory bags are available from Capri in colorful solids. Capridesigns.com

You’ll find original, whimsical drawings of canines, birds, fish and other sporting motifs subtly worked into the designs of Bird Dog Bay’s ties, belts, socks, tote bags and leather and waxed canvas goods. Founder Steve Mayer, artist, imaginator, is the sole illustrator and designer for all his products. Men love his Egyptian cotton dress shirts too, many in wonderful check patterns. birddogbay.com

Women’s Shirts

One collection of Kate Lord’s classics by Ahead is rendered in Surf, Daffodil and True Navy, Jewelry with a hint of pink in the hats. We also love their Magnetic clips fasten Neckblack and white collection including tops, skorts, lettes necklaces to your attire. You and half- and full-zip jackets in lightweight polycan adjust height as needed and no ester jersey. Raspberry. nectarine & black? Yes! holes!! Necklettes.com aheadweb.com

Vineyard vines’ neckties were the inspiration that put the company on the map. Small motifs like sailboats, whales and golf balls set the style for high prep on the “Vineyard.” Hot sellers in golf shops, the company now offers a huge product line for men, women and children from shorts and slacks to shirts and tops. Pastels tend to dominate but the designs, quality and classic fit is what makes vv stand out among the vast array of lifestyle apparel. For example waist sizes for men’s Breaker pants’ include a 35” choice—not always easy to find in sports clothing. vineyardvines.com. 7

Teeing off with LPGA’s Amateur Golf Association’s Hunter Hillers

By Fran Piraino

Last year, the Executive Women’s Golf Association rebranded its organization as the LPGA Amateurs Golf Association. The national relaunch included the local Central New York chapter that at the time was headed by chapter president Hunter Hillers. CNY Golfer posed a few questions to Hillers about ways the organization is trying to grow. Here’s what she had to say: Q? How would you describe your organization to people who have never heard of it? A: LPGA Amateurs Golf Association was founded to bring women into the game and provide them a friendly, non-threatening pathway for evolving into competent golfers. It offers women an opportunity to network and socialize in many venues while ulilizing their business skills and learning new skills. Q? What were the reasons for re-branding/name change from EWGA to LPGA Amateurs? A: We felt Executive Women’s Golf Association was too intimidating and didn’t accommodate all women interested in golf. We are women who like golf or want to learn to golf. The acquisition of the brand by the LPGA is of benefit to both EWGA and the LPGA-Amateur associations. EWGA is able to step up its organizational management to a higher level and the LPGA gains 12,000 eager members with volunteer and leadership skills Q? How has the CNY chapter grown? A: We have doubled in size and have multiple leagues for players with varying skills levels: Drumlins and Tecumseh Club on Mondays, our beginner league at Butternut on Tuesdays, Green Lakes on Wednesdays, Radisson on Thursdays and an 18-hole travel league on Saturdays. Q? What are the CNY chapter’s goals? A: We are looking to double again. We have leagues for every level of play. That is really what we focus on between May-August sprinkled with many opportunities to play in differently formatted tournaments. From September to April the chapter encompasses all the other passions so you have a group of women that may go to eat, attend a concert, a SU game, golf clinics, practice and much more. We have a Christmas party, Spring Kick-Off and a well-attended orientation each year. Q? What were the biggest challenges of your job as president? A: Making sure our members were getting what they have paid for and what they wanted in a golf organization as well as managing our relationship with national. Q? What are the benefits of being a part of the CNY Chapter? A: When you become a member, you are holding yourself responsible for playing golf and therefore will improve your game by playing consistently. Our group offers many opportunities to play more often. I’ve learned rules, etiquette and better course management. If you regis-

ter in a league, you can sub in any of our leagues if you want to. The travel league offers an opportunity to play at private clubs that might not be available to you otherwise. And we encourage networking if you are in business and want to take advantage of that opportunity. We also have member-guests which allow members to invite other women to additional golfing events. The biggest benefit that I didn’t see coming but are very rewarding, are the diverse relationships, personal and business, that I have made. lpgaaamateurscny.com LPGA Amateurs Association 2019 Board Members Janis Luce Chapter President Colette Powers Membership Recruitment Director Colleen Roche Golf Events and Activities Director Kim Pearsall Leagues and Golf Education Director Kyra Danneker Membership Services Director Katie Mooney Communications and Marketing Dir. Put Gleneagles & Solheim Cup on your Calendar

Gleneagles King’s course (above) along with the Queen’s course date from 1919.

This year the venerable Gleneagles in Scotland celebrating its Centenary year, is hosting the Solheim Cup, September 9-15. Once again, the U.S. team will battle Europe in this match play event to see who gets to take home one of the most highly lauded trophies in the world of golf along with a pot of $1 million. This is a contest that takes place every two years much as the Ryder Cup. Currently the U.S. holds a 10-5 advantage over Europe and won the past two competitions (2017 & Juli Inlster 2015). Team Captain Juli Inkster, the 31-time LPGA winner who joined the LPGA in 1983, has represented the U.S. in nine Solheim Cups from 1992-2011. Talking about her role in this year’s Cup, Inkster said, “This year, I’m trying to keep things fresh, especially off the golf course. That’s part of my job: To keep it fresh and exciting so that they all want to play in Scotland. I’ve had a bunch of great girls on my first two teams and I expect the same will be true this year. They call me The Old Lady – hey, my daughter, Hayley, is older than the Solheim Cup, only by a matter of months but older, with both born in 1990 – but it’s with respect. “You know, a challenge of the Solheim Cup is that golf is an individual game and an advantage the Europeans have is that they play a lot more team golf over there. But with new events like the International Crown and the Dow team event our girls are getting more experience at it. And I’ll tell you another thing: It’s not about me winning. They are the ones that do it. I’m just the voice of the team. We have to play great golf to beat Europe – they are a formidable team. Both teams have a great mix of young talent and older players who are embracing the newcomers, showing them what the Solheim is all about.” The 2019 Solheim Cup will not only showcase the stunning assets of Scotland, the Home of Golf, but also build on the legacy of the successful 2014 Ryder Cup at Gleneagles. It will underline that Scotland is the perfect stage for major golf events as it seeks to help inspire a new generation of children to take up the game invented in their home country. Team USA won the 2017 Solheim Cup for a second year running, as

Gleneagles Hotel they refused to let the European’s create history by not letting their five point lead slip. Wins from Paula Creamer, Cristie Kerr, Lizette Salas, Gerina Piller, and Danielle Kang, combined with halves from Lexi Thompson and Angel Yin and were enough to see USA win 16 ½ - 11 ½.

This is one event golf fans everywhere will want to watch. About Gleneagles: The pair of courses, the King’s and Queen’s, were designed by James Braid, opening for play in 1919. Both have benefited from extensive restoration projects that started in 2016. The important work took inspiration from archived photographs and Braid’s original designs and saw fairways widened, bunkers sympathetically restored, and the re-introduction of Scottish heather to better frame all playing surfaces. The Centenary Course, the newest addtion to Gleneagles and a spectacular parkland track, was designed by Jack Nicklaus and is the one the ladies will beplaying.

Rochester ramps up awareness of quality golf experience in area

Doctor launches Ladies Clinics at Highland

Senior Championship tour set for May 21-26

Master PGA Golf Professional Mike Doctor, former pro at Skaneateles CC for 35 years, will be offering Ladies Clinics at Highland Park Golf Club twice a week this summer. Doctor told CNY Golfer, “These clinics are designed for ladies to have fun on the course.” He added, “I love to teach.” The Links at Greystone This year, Rochester is launching a program to spread the word to wider circles that this city set on the southern shore of Lake Ontario has long stood as one of America’s most avid golfing cities. The seven-county area that makes up the Rochester District Golf Association (RDGA) — extending up to Lake Ontario, down into the Finger Lakes region, and midway to both Buffalo and Syracuse — offers 66 golf courses, about half of which are accessible for public play. RDGA Executive Director Tim Vangellow said golf in Rochester extends from the most exclusive private clubs to the least expensive public facilities. Golf really is the major sport here,” Vangellow said. “You can play highquality Oak Hill courses in Rochester for an affordable price. The number of options and affordable courses that are available make this a great place to play.” Rochester will enjoy golf’s spotlight again this year, when one of the game’s major events, the KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship, returns to venerable Oak Hill Country Club from May 21-26. In 2023, the PGA Championship will be contested at Oak Hill for the fourth time. Oak Hill is the only club in the United States to have hosted all six of the men's major championships that move around the country, including the U.S. Open, Amateur and Senior Open, and the Ryder Cup. “Having Oak Hill in Rochester, we have major golf events seemingly every decade or more,” said Vangellow, who has served as RDGA executive director for the past eight years. “That keeps us at the center of the golf world. Golf in Rochester is a very big deal and we are blessed with a strong local golf community.” When Bryan Karns, the Championship Director for the KitchenAid Senior PGA attended the RDGA spring meeting last year, he told Vangellow that as they approach most events, his staff is typically working hard to find volunteers. Not so with Rochester, where all the volunteer spots were filled within six weeks. “It shows the level of support of golf we have in Rochester,” added Vangellow.

Courses

We have a pretty amazing collection of Donald Ross designs that are very close together, all within 20 minutes of each other,” Vangellow said. “That’s one of the nice things about Rochester. We don’t have the bad traffic jams or huge long distances. Everything is quite easy to get to and very convenient.” Among a very small sampling of the most memorable and highly regarded public access golf layouts around Rochester are The Links at Greystone, Ravenwood Golf Club, Shadow Lake and Mill Creek. Vangellow added,“The vast number of really great, high-quality daily fee courses we have in the area is what sets Rochester apart from other golf destinations.” “You do not have to join a club to be a very avid golfer to do a lot of great golfing in Rochester,” Vangellow said. “You could literally play a different course every week and have a great, cost-effective experience.” For more information: VisitRochester.com/golf.

How to build a First Aid kit for your golf bag

Spring 2019

What about that Bloody Mary?

Some golfers have been known to start out their early morning round of golf with a yummy Bloody Mary. The drink dates from the 1920’s when Fernand Petiot, an American bartender at Harry’s New York Bar in Paris, named his creation of tomato juice and vodka, “Bloody Mary” at the suggestion of a customer who said it reminded him of the Bucket of Blood Club in Chicago and a girl he knew there named, Mary. When Petiot brought his recipe to King Cole Bar at the St. Regis Hotel in New York City, he enhanced it adding cayenne pepper, black pepper, Worcestershire sauce,

It may help you; it may help fellow golfers By Dr. Holly Noun

I have often talked to my dad about important steps to preparing for the golf season. We talk about warm-up, clothing, and exercise programs, among other things. It has been many years since we talked about preparing his golf bag. One year for Christmas I made him a small kit for his golf bag – a self-care kit. Yes, the image coming to your mind of a first aid kit is almost correct. I am talking about a personalized, kicked-up first aid kit. You have heard of battlefield medicine; we are talking about golf course medicine! Golf first aid kits exist; there are many on the market. The problem I have with these kits is they are not individualized, and to keep cost reasonable, they often do not have the BEST tools for the golf course. Just like military medics require specialized equipment to care for battlefield injuries, you need specialized equipment to deal with golf course injuries. Wound care is a great example. Most prefabricated kits include wound coverings with little to no flexibility. These are often uncomfortable and do not remain in place even for activities of daily living. The forces generated in the golf swing, along with the need for limited distraction, require individualized self-care equipment.

lemon and Tabasco. Funny thing about Bloodies. Everyone who loves them, claims to have the best recipe. Some use horseradish, some don’t. Some use tomato juice, some V-8 juice, some Clamato juice. Garnishes run the gamut from celery and olives to pickled asparagus and even shrimp. Many use spears of celery; Fallen Oak Golf Club in the gaming capital of Mississippi, jazzes up its Bloodies with peppers marinated in vodka while Wisconsin is known for using spicy pickles. (Read more pg. 14)

The following is a list of basics that every self-care kit should have. I will also share some extras that are key additions for those who spend a lot of time on the course.

The Basics:

- 10 flexible fabric bandaids (3/4 inch regular, and knuckle) - Small tube antibacterial ointment - 1 role 1” flexible tape - 1 role 2” flexible tape - 10 2x2” sterile gauze pads - Tweezers -1 needle - Alcohol wipes (individually wrapped) - Lip balm - Small tube sunscreen (with Zinc) - Small container of hand sanitizer - 2 pairs of rubber gloves (to use if you are helping someone else) - Benadryl (oral) - Index card with emergency numbers and relevant information The extras: - Small multi-tool (scissors, knife) - Extra pair of socks - Extra pair of shoelaces - Moleskin Second skin - Favorite snack (individually wrapped) Your self-care kit should be in 1 sealable container (a large zip lock bag works great), and should be in your golf bag, not your clothes bag (that is not back in the locker room or car trunk). At the beginning of every season, and anytime you use something, you should do inventory to make sure you have everything you need. You may change what is in your kit as you determine your most common needs. During your preseason routine, remember your golf course medicine and your self-care kit! To read an example of how to put your self-care kit to work, read

Discover Sea Island, a quietly elegant beachfront golf & Lifestyle resort

Crossing the bridge to St. Simons Island, an Spanish-American style island retreat off the coast of Georgia, you enter a world of privilege, a place many PGA players call “home.” Howard Coffin, who bought the island in 1912, was captivated by what he called, “the gloom of the live oaks, beautiful, braided and woven.” This remains. Today Sea Island Company has hotels, golf courses, and several exclusive communities on the island, including charming island-style homes in Frederica nearby, all dedicated to seclusion and the sporting life. There is no glitz nor strip malls here. Instead a sense of space, whispering pine forests, oaks, marshes and stunning vistas of the

sea, dominate the landscape. It’s an easy, laid-back coastal lifestyle with boating, a stunning private fivemile beach, good schools, a huge network of cycling and walking paths plus several restaurants, locally-owned stores and plenty of golf on worldclass courses. Golf year-round on Plantation, Seaside and Retreat that have benefitted from updates by architects like Davis Love III and Tom Fazio; ramp up your game at the Sea Is-

land Golf Performance Center; and get custom-fitted for clubs along with a fitness evaluation. The tennis facilities, spa and riding stables are top-rated too. After all, this is a resort where those who can afford it, come to unwind. Stay at The Cloister, a quietly elegant hotel where you can always find a cozy place to read, play a

game of chess or sip a liqueur. Tea and cookies in the late afternoon? You bet. The Lodge, a more intimate hotel and golf clubhouse evokes an English country manor and the Lodge Cottages are gems with front porches, dormers and other quaint features. The Inn is more casual and less pricey yet maintains the resort’s upscale features. And Whichever place you close to stay, you can take for granted the beds, sheets and everything else such as marble tubs and beamed ceilings will be everything you imagined. Then there’s Beabs. His recipe was obtained clandestinely, I’m told, from a bartender at the Metro’s Ski Inn in Cable, Wisconsin, just outside the Telemark Golf Course. Here Juanita Hosch, bartender, made what is arguably the best Bloody in the area adding A-1 sauce and garnishing with homemade spiced pickles. Sworn to secrecy, Beabs, true to his word, never divulged the recipe. But under very little duress, Juanita came through and shared it with me. (see below). BEAB’S BLOODY The coveted Beabs recipe: 1/8 cup Worchester Sauce 1 teaspoon horseradish 1 tablespoon A-1 sauce Pinch Celery salt 3 splashes Tabasco sauce Pour over ice in glass, add regular tomato juice and garnish with olives, lime and lemon wedges and spiced pickles. Spiced pickles: Pour brine out of 1 quart jar of crunchy whole Kosher Dill pickles and cut into long chunky wedges. Boil 1 cup water, 1/2 cup sugar and 1/3 cup white vinegar. Cool. Add a tablespoon of creamed horseradish and mix. Pour mixture into jar of pickles and let marinate overnight. Turn over occasionally to distribute brine evenly. And there you have it! If you have any recipes you want to share from your favorite golf restaurant or bar, bring it on. Photos would be a huge plus. (kdd1001@aol.com)

What shall it be? Private club membership or...pay when you play?

As most of you know, golf courses are divided into categories; private, resort, semi private, public and municipal. For those who only play 3-5 times per month, joining a private club may not seem like a good investment because you believe the cost per round, per month, is too pricey. Playing golf at different golf courses and paying greens fees everytime you play seems like a better option, not to mention the fact that in Up-State New York, the golf season for 95% of golfers lasts only about seven months. The other 5% of us will play until Mother Nature steps in to say, “Stop! Therefore, a logical question might be, “Why would anyone want to join a private country club? Fair question. As I pondered this issue, I thought about my own personal experiences when I was single, married and then as a family

The Pro-Shop staff would make you feel like you were visiting Augusta National and address you and your family by name.

4. The club would have a reciprocal arrangement with other private courses that would give us the opportunity to play there a few times. 5. Tom Gorman explains sanity of new golf rules

They’ve been simplified, made more sensible & help speed up play Tom Gorman has been a member of the PGA Rules Committee for more than 30 years and a regular guest on Tee Time with the Pronoun on WSYR Radio. CNY Golfer has asked him to fill us in on the new golf rules that went into effect this year. As a member of the PGA of America Rules Committee, I would like to make our readers aware of the reasons behind all the rule changes. First, it has been a seven-year process between the USGA and the R&A Golf Association. They had finally realized that something needed to be done. Golf takes too long to play and is a very difficult game. Most the rule changes were directed to correct some of these issues. To implement these changes the Rules had to be completely re-written. The new Rule book has 24 Rules vs. 34 Rules in the old book. The Decision Book went from more than 1,200 Decisions to 400 plus Decisions with 400 eliminated and 400 incorporated into the Rules and Definitions. The Game had to be sped up and made more player friendly. Here are some major changes in the Rules that have addressed these two issues. Increasing the Pace of Play Rule 18.2- When a ball is lost A ball is lost if not found in three minutes after the player or his/her caddy begins to search for it. The old Rule used to allow five minutes. Rule 13.2a - Player may leave the flagstick in the hole. The player may make a stroke with the flagstick left in the hole so that it is possible for the ball in motion to hit the flagstick. This rule definitely saves time as someone does not have to tend the flagstick. Marking the golf course By definition a penalty area is any body of water, but now any other part of the course the committee defines as a penalty area may be marked as such, so a player can take his relief with a one shot penalty and move on. This eliminates the need to play a provisional ball. Pace of Play: Rule 5.6d1 Pace of Play is now a separate category. The Rule states that a player should make a stroke in no more than 40 seconds after he or she is able to play, without any interference of distractions. Also Rule 5.6b2 states that a player may play ready golf even in Match Play if players agree to play out of turn. By following these changes, all golfers should be able to finish any round in under four hours. Making the Game more player friendly and eliminating outdated, unfair and nonsensical Rules Rule 7: Replacing a ball that has been accidently moved The player gets no penalty if the ball is accidently moved in trying to find or identify. But the ball must be replaced to its original spot with no penalty. Rule 13.1c2: Repairing damage on putting green caused by a person or outside influence with no penalty. This means ball marks, spike marks and scrapes can now be repaired. Also animal tracks and hoof indentations can also be repaired. Each player should have the same playing field. Rule 13.2a: Playing out of a bunker A player may now remove loose impediments and moveable obstructions and in so doing, may touch the sand, all without penalty. This Rule applied both during a round and while play is stopped. Rule 17.1b: Playing in a penalty area. A player may play a ball as it lies in a penalty area (formerly know as a water hazard) under the same rules that apply to a ball in the general area (fairway). You can ground your club, remove loose impediments and remove any moveable obstruction that interferes with your lie or your swing. This is so much fairer. These are just some of the changes that should make 2019 a much better year for golf. To follow up on these and some of the other 22 major changes, log on to USGA.org/Rules

Should you be playing a low, high or mid-compression ball? By Perry Noun

The golf season has arrived! If we play a ball with the correct compression, will it make us better players? There is a simple formula to determine the compression of the ball we “should be using”. First of all, what is compression? It is the measurement of how much a ball flattens against the face of the club at impact, expressed as a simple number (e.g.50,75,90). In other words, the softer the cover of the golf ball, the flatter the ball will compress off the face of the club. All of this sounds simple enough and that is why all of the major golf ball manufacturers have spent millions of dollars researching the effects of compression with the goal of “fitting” every golfer with a ball that is best suited to their swing speed and skills. The top golf ball manufactures, including Bridgestone, Callaway, Maxfli, Nike, OnCore, Pinnacle, Snell,Taylor Made, Top Flite, Vice, Volvik and Wilson are currently making golf balls with different compression ratings, focusing on a golfers “swing speed” as the determining factor when recommending a particular ball. Surprisingly, the “lone wolf” golf ball manufacturer that is not 100% on board with this “marketing scheme” is Titleist. Yep...the ball that for the 30 years + has been played by the majority of PGA Tour players and more than all other golf balls combined...according to their website. They believe there is, “little discernible difference in how much a Tour player and a rank amateur compress the ball regardless of the balls compression rating”. For the evidence of their findings, go to their website. So, who’s right...who’s wrong? You would think the golf industry could come up with a definitive answer to this question. Unfortunately, they haven’t been able to, although most experts tend to believe, compression matters. For arguments sake, let’s assume the

18

“compression matters professors” are correct. Here are their findings with regard to maximizing the DISTANCE you will hit a golf ball with your driver: * If your swing speed is 105mph or faster, you probably should be playing a HIGH compression ball that has a rating of 90-plus. * If your swing speed is 85-104mph, you probably should be playing a MID compression ball that has a rating of 66-89. * If your swing speed is 84mph or slower, you should probably play a LOW compression ball with a rating of 65 or lower. Are there other factors that should be taken into consideration? Of course. I found a site on the internet that said this about compression... “To be sure, compression isn’t the only factor affecting a golf balls length. Its core, cover and mantle materials have an impact, as do dimple shapes and patterns. And, just because you hit Ball A farther than Ball B doesn’t necessarily make Ball A your best bet. You may prefer the flight and spin characteristics of Ball B, or simply like the way it feels coming off the club”. So what does all of this “mumbo-jumbo” mean to the 99% of us who do not have a handicap index of “0.0”? Is compression the only thing we should consider when spending our money on golf balls this season? Probably not. Compression is not the “be-all end-all” of golf ball fitting. Do your research if you are so inclined...test a few different balls if you like...consider price as well, however, don’t forget your common sense. Some of the longest drives I have ever hit with my driver have been with balls that cost less than $1.00 or I have found in the woods with marks all over the cover...and I had no clue what the compression was of the ball. Besides, the biggest determination of distance off the tee is SMASH FACTOR, which we will explore at another time. Spring 2019

The hills are alive at Vesper Hills With the sound of.... By Perry Noun

No, it’s not the sound of music...it’s the sound of golf balls moving around in the water surrounding the new Par 3, 8th hole at the Vesper Hills Golf Club in Tully, NY. No one knows exactly how many balls are at the bottom of the pond but I’ll bet there are enough to give 1,000 golfers at least a dozen balls to start the season. It has been exactly two years since Mark Drumm completed construction on the “island green” measuring 169 yards from the tee to the center of the green and it remains the “Signature” hole at Vesper Hills. I remember telling Mark that based on statistical evidence from the United States Golf Association, there would “likely” be a hole-in-one before the end of the golf season in 2017. Mark didn’t believe it would happen before the end of the season. To create a little excitement, Mark offered a free years membership to Vesper Hills for the first golfer to make a hole in one on the 8th hole. And guess what? Bob Schlicht, a member at Vesper Hills, proved the statistical evidence was correct. He made a hole-in-one on October 28 of 2017 from 150 yards, using a 7 iron. I even chipped in with a contribution of $100 for a few drinks and some food. The 8th hole has become one of the most difficult and talked about Par 3’s in CNY because water surrounds almost 90% of the green.

Private Clubs: Continued from page 15 10. And we certainly wouldn’t join unless there were at least two, TopGolf Swing Suite indoor golf simulators available to us for a true 12 month golfing experience. I believe we can all agree: being a member at a private golf club that would meet or exceed all

of the expectations listed above, would be one of the best things that could happen to us. I did the math and determined that the over-allvalue of belonging to such a club would be worth considering because it would all add up to a 12 month membership. Fortunately I can tell you about one private golf club in CNY that meets or exceeds all 10 Expectations: Lakeshore Yacht and Coun-

Robbie Phelps, CNY PGA Golf Professional, manages the Pro Shop and golf operations, including local leagues, tournaments, golf outings and travel leagues throughout CNY while other staff members keep the course immaculately maintained and the clubhouse an inviting place to linger, dine and drink. By the time you read this, I will have made the short trip from Syracuse to Tully, NY, south on Rt. 81 and then East on Rt 80 in Tully all the way the Vesper Hills sign. Hopefully I can play a few holes and regain my confidence after scoring an 11 on the Par 5, 14th hole last year during a CNY Senior Golf Tournament. The hole measures only 460yds but yours truly put two tee shots into the woods for the 11. It was one of the most psychologically challenging rounds I have ever played. Vesper Hills can do that to you if you don’t stay focused. The highs and lows of the round were mentally exhausting—3 double bogies; 2 triple bogies; 1 quintuplet (5 over par); 4 birdies and an eagle. The Eagle came on the Par 4, 18th hole with an 8 iron. You figure it out...I’m exhausted just thinking about it. After my round, I expect to have some of that delicious food in “The Loft” restaurant, which, by the way, is one of the “Top17” Alfresco restaurants in CNY. And did you know that Vesper Hills was voted the “6th Best” golf course in CNY? Although Mark and his wife Susan are not golfers, their commitment to resurrect the Geoffrey Cornish designed layout is one of the great story lines in CNY golf history. If you haven’t been to Vesper Hills to play golf, you are missing out on one of the most fun courses you can play in CNY. If you have played Vesper Hills, and have eaten at The Loft restaurant, there is nothing I can say that you don’t already know.

try Club in Cicero, NY. The members and staff have made me feel truly welcome and the completely renovated Clubhouse and deck provide a stunning view of Oneida Lake. I can’t wait to have my grandchildren enjoy the Olympic size pool and attend the junior golf clinics. If you are still thinking about your golf options for the Summer, there are several categories of

membership that you can consider at Lakeshore. It would not be a stretch to say that Lakeshore also provides one of the best social calendars for it’s members I have seen in CNY. I would love to show you around the clubhouse and play a few holes. Give me a call at (315)374-1889 or call the office at (315)699-2797.
