5 TOP TIPS FOR KEEPING YOUR PETS COAT GLOSSY

Does your pet dogs coat shine and feel soft to the touch? A rough, dull coat can be an indicator of several different skin conditions, or of a poor diet, and can have an impact on their health and appearance. Here are 5 top tips for keeping your dog’s coat and their health, happy and glossy: ●

What is your dog eating? Be sure to feed them a nutritious diet:

Omega-6 is an essential element of your dog’s diet, and if they’re not getting enough (or any) of it, then this could result in them having a rough and coarse coat.

Not all commercial pet foods are made from the same ingredients, so check the can or packet of food that you’re feeding your dog with to check that it includes Omega-6, and ideally, Omega-3 fatty acids. Be cautious of low-fat foods that may exclude certain essential nutrients and try to avoid foods that contain genetically modified grains.

How often do you bathe your dog? Be sure to bathe them at least every 3 months:

The frequency of a bath depends a lot on the breed and type of dog, their activity level and the condition of their skin.

Long haired dogs usually require more frequent bathing to help maintain their coat and eliminate ticks, fleas and other pathogens that may be hiding among the fur. While dogs with shorter hair can often go months without a bath. The general rule of thumb is that your dog should be bathed at least every 3 months, but if in doubt, consult with your veterinarian. â—?

What shampoo do you use? Natural shampoos are generally safest:

Shampoos with ingredients such as aloe vera, oatmeal, citrus extracts and herbal proteins are generally best for use on dogs, and if your dog has a particularly dull coat, these ingredients could work wonders.

Light coloured coats also respond well to shampoos containing brighteners and whiteners, while knotty fur may require a conditioning product after shampooing. Always avoid human shampoos for your pet, as they can strip your dogs coat of its essential oils, leaving it dry and dull. â—?

How often do you brush your dog? Regular brushing helps maintain a healthy coat:

Brushing your dogs coat regularly can help get rid of dead fur, and distribute natural oil throughout their coat, promoting healthy hair growth. If your pet sheds frequently, don’t worry as this is perfectly natural, but brush them often to help prevent the excess fur from taking over your home.

Herbal supplements; usually helpful when given as prescribed:

Horsetail and spirulina are herbal supplements rich in silica, vitamin B and carotenoids, each of which helps to maintain a healthy and glossy coat. However, while these products are herbal, it’s always best to check with a veterinarian before starting your pet on any new supplements. For persistent problems with your dog’s coat that haven’t got better with regular bathing, grooming and a nutritious diet, always consult with a veterinarian.
