Welcome to Clyde Marina
W
e welcome our first time visitors, our regular customers and berth holders to Ayrshire’s beautiful coastline and the Gateway to the Clyde. Situated in the Eglinton Basin in Ardrossan Harbour on the Ayrshire coast, Clyde Marina is the ideal base for the islands and sea lochs of the Clyde, one of Europe’s most beautiful cruising grounds. With the shores and anchorages of Arran, the stunning scenery of the Kyles of Bute, Loch Fyne, the Cumbraes and Bute all in easy reach, we are perfectly positioned! If your interest lies in the more adventurous passages round the Mull of Kintyre to the islands of the west coast or south west to Ireland, there is no better jumping-off point than Clyde Marina. Alternatively, take the Crinan Canal from Ardrishaig on Loch Fyne to Crinan and straight out to the west coast. The Crinan Canal meanders through 14.5km of beautiful scenery and is a lovely shortcut for both yachts and powerboats, straight through to the west coast cruising grounds. Clyde Marina offers full service facilities. We boast the deepest water marina berthing on the Clyde - and the most protected - within our fully walled basin, with storm gate protection for the entrance when required. Our 7 acres of fully surfaced and serviced boatyard and large undercover storage boat shed mean we are able to store up to 300 boats ashore for winter hardstanding. We are very proud of our reputation for providing a professional service and great facilities at a realistic price. Ardrossan Harbour Traffic Control Signals
C
lyde Marina is exceptional in having the provision of a storm gate which is designed to give the maximum protection from wave action and heavy sea states from a westerly quadrant. The gate is not tidal and so it is not a lock gate, but it closes the basin against heavy seas from the west. When closed, even in the most extreme conditions the water surface inside the marina basin is virtually flat, so significantly reducing the wear and tear on lines and fenders. Generally the gate would be closed in gale force winds from the west that are consistently over 35 kts. If approaching in extreme weather please check with the marina on CH 80 or by phone or contact the Coastguard. The storm gate for you the boat owner means safer, more protected moorings, steadier pontoons and kinder waters for your boat and equipment. When closed, we notify the local coastguard and Ardrossan Harbour Control who change the entry lights to 2 Red over 1 Green and we post a “Storm Gate Closed� notice in our office window.
Marina Open (Harbour Closed): Pleasure vessels may proceed to and from the Marina. Commercial vessels requiring permission of Harbour Control are prohibited from entering, leaving or manoeuvring within the harbour. Harbour Open (Marina Closed): All Pleasure vessels must clear the Outer Basin, Canting Area and Approach Channel immediately. As a general rule if when approaching the harbour the light sequence is turned to 2 red / 1 green you may continue onwards if already past the red West Crinan buoy, passage through the harbour to the marina expeditiously. The harbour control tower broadcasts on VHF Ch 12 but the tower is generally only manned during the periods of ferry movements. If in doubt use Ch 12 to the tower during changes to light sequences. Harbour and Marina CLOSED: Neither Commercial nor Pleasure vessels are permitted to proceed inwards or outwards.
The Caledonian MacBrayne Arran ferry service shares the harbour and a traffic light system controls movements in the harbour for the short period when the ferry is manoeuvring. Yacht and boat owners are reminded to strictly observe the light sequence and instructions. 7

The sheltered waters of the Firth of Clyde have a worldclass reputation for yachting and offer sailors a wonderful playground and opportunities for island hopping. The fun continues onshore with Ayrshire being home to excellent marinas, popular towns, spacious beaches, stunning scenery, castles steeped in history, and championship golf resorts.
Opportunities to explore and enjoy the great outdoors are vast and varied from magnificent countryside to inspiring coastline, world-class yachting to wildlife watching, and cycling routes to golf resorts. Ayrshire is the birthplace of the Open Championship - golf’s most prestigious tournament, and is home to over 40 courses including some of the finest golf courses Scotland has to offer including Royal Troon, Prestwick, and Turnberry. If golf is not for you, then opportunities abound to explore the countryside by bike with over 50 miles of the National Cycle Network to explore, or on foot along the Ayrshire coastal path which stretches 100 miles (160 km) along one of the finest panoramic coastlines. Nature lovers can enjoy wildlife watching on route and back on the water keep an eye out for seals, basking sharks, and even dolphins.
Clyde Marina is the ideal base to explore all that the region has to offer. Step ashore at the historic port town of Ardrossan, and enjoy a stroll along the sprawling sandy beaches and take in the breath-taking views across the Firth of Clyde to Arran. Then wander up to Ardrossan Castle, which sits in a prominent position above the town. You don’t need to venture far from to find delicious food as Cecchini’s Italian Bar-Bistro and Restaurant overlooks the marina. Heritage & Culture

Immerse yourself in the rich history of the region with a visit to one of the magnificent historic castles, stately residences, museums or visitor attractions. For castles you’re spoilt for choice with the stunning Culzean Castle, to the south of Ayr near Maybole, Dean Castle and Country Park in Kilmarnock, and Kelburn Castle and Country Centre in Fairlie near Largs. On route to Largs stop into the Craft Town Scotland in West Kilbride, Scotland’s first Craft Town, and peruse a fantastic range of craft studios that produce high quality and unique works. Next, take time to visit Dumfries House, which dates back to the 1750s and witness first-hand the unique collection of Chippendale furniture. Discover the fascinating life and times of Robert Burns, Scotland’s National Bard with a visit to the award-winning Robert Burns Birthplace Museum and Cottage in Alloway on the outskirts of Ayr, and The Burns House Museum in Mauchline.
Isle of Arran The Isle of Arran has much to offer boat users with its’ beautiful coastline being home to charming villages and quiet beaches. Often referred to as ‘Scotland in Miniature’, Arran has a diverse range of stunning landscapes - rugged and mountainous in the north, with green rolling hills and woodland in the south. A popular holiday destination, Arran has an abundance of wildlife and is ideal for outdoor enthusiasts. Brodick offers a superb selection of services, with plenty of cafes, shops and attractions to choose from. On the outskirts of the village is Brodick Castle and Estate which is now home to an internationally acclaimed rhododendron collection, a restored walled garden dating back to 1710, and the Castle’s country park has waymarked trails, woodlands, waterfalls, gorges, and wildlife ponds. Neighbouring Brodick Castle is Arran Brewery and Visitor Centre where you can watch beer
in the making via the viewing gallery and taste some samples too. The more active can venture up Goatfell - at 2866 ft (874 metres) it’s the highest peak on Arran, or take to the water again with Arran Adventure Company for a day’s sea kayaking adventure.
Brodick Beach
Lochranza is the most northerly village, made all the more accessible for visiting yachts with its own pontoon. Lochranza Hotel is a welcome site for parched and famished sailors, with a comfy lounge bar offering home cooked food; it also has one of Scotland’s most extensive malt whisky collections. Extend your enjoyment and knowledge of Scotland’s famous spirit with a visit to Arran Distillery Visitor Centre. Lamlash is a pretty village with Victorian charm offering many places to eat and drink along the seafront. The bay is a sheltered natural harbour and is a haven for sailors. Divers like it too thanks to the Derwent shipwreck dating back to 1830. The Holy Island lies a mile off the coast from Lamlash, rising 1000ft out of the sea. The site of an early Christian monastery, it’s now home to a Buddhist Community dedicated to peace and well being.

Isle of Cumbrae The Isle of Cumbrae has a coastline of just over 11 miles (18 km), and yet this small island has its fair share of leisure, cultural and historical attractions. The main town of Millport is a favourite day-trip destination, and has plenty of shops, cafes and bars. Wander along the seafront and enjoy the town’s sandy beaches and famous landmarks, including the famous Crocodile Rock. Visit the Cathedral of the Isles which is the smallest cathedral in Europe. Next make your way to the Museum of the Cumbraes in Garrison House and the Robertson Museum and Aquarium with sea life exhibitions and a collection of animal species from the Clyde. For the more energetic, you can hire a bike and cycle around Cumbrae to enjoy the stunning panoramic views of the high peaks of Arran, the Isle of Bute, Dunoon and the Clyde sea lochs, or take to the water again at Scotland’s National Watersports Centre. A wide range of activities are available by advance booking, including power boating, kayaking and windsurfing all under the supervision of qualified instructors.

or transport links and access we are within easy distance from both Glasgow International and Prestwick airports. By road we are just 25 miles from Glasgow and the motorway links to the north, east and south into England. Uniquely we have our own on site railway station, Ardrossan Harbour, right in our boatyard and running direct services to Glasgow Central. Plus of course we share the harbour with the Caledonian MacBrayne ferry service to Arran. By sea Clyde Marina has 24 hour all tide access, with a minimum depth of 4.5 metres above chart datum. We are the deepest water marina on the Clyde and have welcomed the full range of craft from tall ships to superyachts and the most extreme round the world racers. The approach to the south of Horse Island is well lit at night with clear leading lights. There is also a harbour control tower and traffic control lights indicating the traffic status of the harbour, please study the light sequence on page 7 and observe this during entering or leaving the harbour. 10

History
Shipyards were built and many local firms were involved in building wooden ships, fishing vessels or cargo boats. This continued through the post war period until the competition from abroad damaged Ardrossan’s shipbuilding industry and it ceased to exist much after the 1950s and 1960s.
T
he town and harbour of Ardrossan have a long history and are inextricably linked with the sea.
In 1796 Hugh, Earl of Eglinton had ambitious plans for the town of Ardrossan. His vision was to develop the town with wide streets and good housing. He also wanted to build a harbour and a canal to connect to Glasgow to reduce the time for the cargo brought in by sailing ships to reach the city. When Hugh died in 1819, the work had been in progress for 13 years, but was incomplete and the age of the steam ship had sealed the fate of his ambitious canal project. Work on the harbour continued slowly and was eventually completed in 1864. As Ardrossan developed during the 18th & 19th centuries it became best known as a port; with coal and iron exported to Europe & North America as well as Ireland for many years.
Ardrossan town had grown as a result of the harbour and in 1886 the Ardrossan Harbour Company was formed to deal with the huge increase in use of the harbour. The company built the Eglinton dock, where we are today, in 1892 along with the existing outer breakwater. The Ardrossan Harbour Company eventually became a part of Clydeport holdings. Ardrossan continued to flourish into the 20th century with new manufacturing industries, but the harbour declined in latter half of the century. In the 1980s – 90s when apart from the Arran ferry service the harbour had become little used. In 1997 the establishment of Clyde Marina started the transformation of the Eglinton basin from an out of work commercial dock into the now vibrant marina and boatyard and beginning a new chapter in Ardrossan’s maritime story.

The Green Blue
C
lyde Marina are proud to be a part of The Green Blue initiative in Scotland and have recently been awarded The Green Blue Marine Toolkit Certificate, having introduced environmental policies, action plans and adopting best practise and monitoring performance. As a part of this we have introduced recycling at our skip and waste areas and we ask for your assistance in responsibly separating and disposing of waste for recycling. We would also like to draw your attention to the Scottish Governments policy aimed at limiting the spread of invasive non native species in Scottish waters, as outlined in the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. In accordance with best practise outlined in this act we ask that all boats be lifted and washed off once a year and antifoul inspected if required, which of course is the best practise for your boat also, to avoid heavy fouling and transmission of marine growth. Scottish waters offer stunningly beautiful scenery, some of the best sailing in the world and a wealth of marine wildlife. Follow these top tips from The Green Blue to help safeguard these beautiful waters and habitats for future generations.

• Keep your distance from wildlife. Do not chase but let them come to you. Use binoculars for a better view. The Scottish Marine Wildlife Watching code - www.marinecode.org - tells you all you need to know. • Be careful where you land, especially in the breeding season, taking care not to disturb nesting birds or seal colonies. • Be careful not to spill oil and fuel and check your bilges before pumping out. One litre of oil or fuel can contaminate one million litres of water! • Raw sewage from boats can be a powerful pollutant. Use shore-side toilet facilities wherever possible and particularly if you are anchored in water with restricted tidal flow or near shellfish beds. • Use only environmentally friendly cleaners below and on deck. • In the more remote parts of Scotland waste bins can be hard to find so plan to hold on to your rubbish and dispose of it properly, recycling as much as possible. Make sure no loose waste gets blown overboard. • Minimise your use of fossil fuels, sail where possible and go with the tide. Use the free gym and row your tender rather than use the outboard! • Avoid excess noise and wash and take time to enjoy the tranquillity of this beautiful coastline.
