Cover page: I decided to use typography to create an abstract shape of a cat's head using the three letters "CAT".
1st spread: I created an abstract ink drawing of a Black American Shorthair cat, and made seven copies, arranged into a big pile of indistinct black fluff, with 'glowing' eyes. I juxtaposed this with a beautifully rendered ink drawing by Malaysian artist Kamwei Fong. Her cat is looking up. So I put a little "Easter egg" for the following spread, to lead the reader to the next narrative.
2nd spread: Front and centre: Egyptian Goddess Bastet. Surrounded by present-day photographic cats, gazing as if they are remembering a time when they were worshiped. Another "Easter egg" in centre fold.
3rd spread: Modern artist's vision of the cat: Jiji from Kiki's Delivery Service (1989 Japanese animated film, by Hayao Miyazaki). I have arranged them as if they themselves were surrounding a "Jiji" statue in admiration and worship.
Back cover: peacefully sleeping cat.
