The Event. Can the auto-part store become the auto shop that transforms into the parking structure which connects the gas station and the convenience store? Can the ornamentation (or lack of ornamentation) help familiarize (or defamiliarize) the container from the contained or from container to container? Bernard Tschumi’s “Architecture and Disjunction” illustrates the current contemporary condition in the modern metropolis of defamiliarization in architecture –the same way that the auto shop and gas station blends into our cities as part of our daily mundane routines. The fragmentation produced by the “scaleless juxtaposition” of these structures intensifies “the event” (the repairing within the shop, the shopping in the store, and the moving cars within the parking structure). This project investigates the architectural auto shop typology, generalized programs of signage, exterior and interior language to distinguish the contained from the container. This leads to a re-examination of the ubiquitous auto shop in attempt to reflect on the expanding car culture in the city and revisit the connection between the man and the machine.

The Automotive Symbol. The Auto Mecca, composed of a gas station, convenience store, auto-part stores and auto shops hold a restorative symbol of constant renewal and reparation for the vehicle. It is a vessel for modification and beautification of transformative nature for the machine. The regular visits generated by the human dependence on vehicular transportation creates a ritual lying in an endless tug of war between the needs of cars and the needs of people. Though the auto shop’s vernacular structure disassociates itself from the machine within, the repetitive nature of the auto shop and its counterpart, the gas station, play a vital role within our society, merging into the industrial surroundings with its insignifigance.

Industrial architecture’s monolithic structures are reminders of their importance in the corporate world. Factories imposing on the urban fabric are not unlike the built representation of fascism that once portrayed the vision of a strong, unified and stable nation.

The historical signifigance of arches show its popularity as a structural tool and reflection of power in the fascist-era. The Auto Mecca reexamines the ubiquitous autoshop in an attempt to reflect on the expanding car culture in the city and the (dis)connection between the man and the machine.

This project uses lighting and spacial successions in awareness to the surrounding nature to depict the emotional atmosphere during the Danish occupation, resistance, terror and liberation period. By creating a procession back in time to connect four chapters of history, this project gives the patron a better understanding of the time between the occupation and liberation of Denmark from the German Nazis during WWII.

The Green Corridor Silver Lake Housing is located on the intersection of Silver Lake Blvd and Dillion Street in the trendy suburb of Silver Lake. The program consists of 15 live-work units. The project responds to the busy street with an operable screen to provide shade and natural lighting throughout the day. The project focuses on community connectivity in the backyard corridor to allow for neighbors to interact on a daily basis while providing privacy upon entering their personal space.

May 4-6, 2018 Mojave, CA 500+ Aendees Big Fire Comedy Fesval is a three day event on a prisne patch of high-desert property. This weekend pop-up aims to form a spontaneous arts village filled with laughter. The art structures scaered among the site are put together by reused and recycled materials from discarded theatre sets. The Shipwrecked Heart started after I was approached by the co-founders of the fesval to design an effigy that resembles a rusc heart. In a team of two, my design partner and I design-built the art installaon using only recycled wood le over from construcon sites and twine. “BIG FIRE” entrance sign is made of CNCed 4’x 8’ plywood.

The Zendom is designed for people to connect, meditate and reflect throughout the fesval. It is mainly constructed of 2x4 mber struts, molded plasc hubs, fabric and electric conduits. With new experiences at the fesval, new memories are made and noted in the dome. At night, the messages are illuminated with lights that sway in the wind along the sound of the chimes. The Zendom is a safe space that fosters posivity and inspiraon.

The Puzzled Bike Rack uses the most simple and effective method of construction to develop a modular system. In a team of 4, we looked into different connections to create a bike rack that can generate social interaction. Created by recycled doors, we CNC milled our modules before piecing them together like a puzzle.

For Live Painting, I use acrylic paint to create new surfaces and textures that challenge our percepons of shape and color. My work translates the energy of the current moment into lines and paerns onto the canvas. I hope my work will inspire others to express their creavity with a medium of their choice. All live painngs are started and completed during the event.
