PUREBRED BEEF UNIT Builds new headquarters; continues the legacy During the fall of 2016, the Department of Animal Sciences and Industry began construction to relocate the Purebred Unit headquarters. Please plan to join us for a dedication ceremony at 3 p.m. at the new headquarters where the pavement ends at the crest of hill as you approach the Stanley Stout Center. The new facility will provide state of the art equipment and space for the next chapter in the unit’s history. New facilities include multipurpose, lab, calving barn and processing spaces as well as equipment to measure individual feed intake and efficiency. Our mission continues to provide undergraduate and graduate students with practical experience in breeding, feeding, management and marketing of purebred seedstock as well as give livestock selection and general animal science courses the opportunity to evaluate quality cattle. The faculty employing unit resources seek to conduct leading research in the areas of genetic improvement, nutrition and management of beef cattle for a range of economically important traits and serve as a demonstration facility highlighting the best management practices in beef production for breeding, genetics, reproductive management and nutrition. Kansas State University Purebred Beef Unit annually runs nearly 300 breeding-age purebred Angus, Hereford, and Simmental cows on 4,000 acres of native bluestem grass to meet this critical need.
