Editor’s Words of Encouragement pretty straightforward when it comes to the weather. The Big Apple isn’t known for earthquakes like California or hurricanes like Florida. Winter, spring, summer, and fall is basically what you get, and the seasons are always on schedule. Yeah, NY has its share of blizzards and hot summers, but none of these conditions stand out as potential, impromptu hazards if you reside there. Living in Tampa, I’d already experienced tropical storm winds and waterspouts that sent me into full hurricane and tornado panic mode! In 1992, my worst fears came to fruition when the Category 5 Atlantic Hurricane Andrew caused death and destruction in Miami, FL. I remember our congregation praying in the church; “Father of Moses, Jacob, and Isaac, please do not send this storm our way.” Since that time, several storms have threatened Tampa Bay, but they always seem to turn away from us.” However, on September 10th, Hurricane Irma targeted our peninsula with her sights set on the entire state of Florida. Actually, her eye was set to pass right over Tampa.

Preparation and Prayer

“She is the most intense Atlantic hurricane observed in over a decade”. This was quoted by several meteorologists daily. Irma was three times the size of Andrew! I watched images of the destruction that she left behind in Antigua, my birthplace, and the obliteration of Antigua’s sister island, Barbuda. Irma continued her path of eradication in the British and US Virgin Islands, (Tortola, St. Maarten, Turks and Caicos), where more of my family resides. Needless to say, this storm hit home for me in more ways than one and prayer and preparation became a constant in my home as my husband and I pondered whether to stay or flee Florida with our 9 and 6-year-old children. My father, who lived in Clearwater (high flood zone area), stayed with us. I remembered feeling blessed that my house was not in a low-lying area and that the only threat was the winds. So we boarded up the windows with plywood (my hubby literally pulled off the attic walls) and with bi-fold kitchen, bedroom, and linen closet doors. Why use the closet doors? Stores like Lowe’s and Home Depot were out of plywood! We got extra bottles of water, restocked our candles, batteries, LED lights, and nonperishable foods. We added cold frozen bottles of water in our washing machine which doubled as a refrigerator, (pending the electricity outage), we cleared the master suite closet in the master bathroom, added our son’s mattress and all the linens we could find, charged up all smartphones, devices and placed medications in an accessible place. We created a cozy bunker. Prep and pray, prep and pray. This is all we could do.

Miraculously, an hour or so before the storm was to hit, we heard the announcement from Denis Phillips, Meteorologist, for ABC Action News. He reported that the storm took a turn away from Tampa! A prediction that he casually made earlier in the week per the spaghetti projections. Although we were not out of the woods, it was not going to be as bad as expected. “Thank God!” I remember saying, as my phone began ringing with Facebook alerts from friends who were thanking God for, once again, diverting a BIG ONE away from us. Again, it was not over, Irma was still coming and she was so unpredictable! We hunkered down and waited for the storm to pass. My husband and I had a discussion with our kids prior to the storm and let them know that: “God didn’t give them a Spirit of fear….” and that He would bring us through. We could tell that they were scared, (and told them it was okay to be), but they soldiered up because they followed the example that we modeled for them in crisis.

What Irma Taught Me

Thankfully, we suffered minimal damage, mainly to the landscape (broken tree limbs etc.). Of course, we lost power for about a day and a half. We were lucky because people are still waiting for power (as I write this article) in Florida and beyond. I must say though, the experience of Irma and what she taught my family and is an invaluable lesson. Protecting & Caring For Your Knees Knee problems can occur for various reasons such as, falling down, car accidents, being overweight, and bad posture. Being and athlete (basketball, football, dancing, gymnastics, tennis), causes damage and irritation because you are engaging your knees on a regular basis. Below are tips on protecting and caring for your knees.

Select lower impact activities Avoid activities that require jumping, (dance, tennis, gymnastics, basketball, and racquetball). These high-impact activities involves twisting, turning. Alternatives: Light weight training, swimming, and walking (do not over emphasize strides when walking. This can place stress on your knees).

If high-impact is a part of your lifestyle (sports and fitness), follow instructions below on knee care. For athletes and those who have a healthy fitness regimen, low-impact activities may not be convenient. However, protection and recovery care is important. •

Avoid activities on pavement or concrete. Choose indoor (wood, foam, cork and rubber).

Give your body a rest. Rest your body, workout your upper body on these days. Do not engage in leg presses, squats, or leg extensions.

During and after activity knee protection, such as, braces, self-adhesive compression wraps. Make sure that your blood can circulate. Using these wraps and braces should focus on the alignment with your knee and legs and stability at the joints.

Stop and rest during activities and engage in knee stretches. Doctors recommend a quadriceps stretch to increase flexibility in the ligaments, tendons and muscles of the knee to increase range of motion.

Apply ice packs to your knees regularly. When you do this between activity it helps with the diminish inflammation and swelling.

During rest, keep your feet elevated to prevent fluid from forming around the knees and to keep the swelling down. Using a pillow to prop your leg and feet up.

Always increase your fluids before, during and after activities. Dehydration can compound and even cause joint pain.

BlaizeDance, Inc. Where Are They Now? Da’More Shorter Winning big at competition Sometimes we cross paths with individuals who are just like family. In the case of Trelinda Shorter, Da’More’s mom, her first time in the studio was a memorable one as the discussion of her last name monopolized the conversation (laugh). After we got that out of the way, the lean little girl standing next to her with those bright eyes and the unique name quickly became one of my favorite students. Not because she had my last name, but because there was an intense passion for dance behind those eyes. Da’More was one of those students that shined on and off stage. She’s tall, graceful, but can quickly turn on dance moves that you would not expect her to do. She is versatile, fun, quiet, mysterious, and bold, all at the same time. Guess what? She was only five at the time. I often wondered what she was up to. Well, we’ve tracked her down and are so proud of how far she’s come in dance.

Beginnings at BLAIZE How old were you when you started dancing with BLAIZE Dance School (BDS)? Da’More: Five years old. What do you remember about being a part of BLAIZE Dance School? Da’More: My first dance recital was with you. I remember performing ballet pieces on stage with my friend, Shaniya Augusts. How did the training at Blaize help prepare you for your dance journey? Da’More: My experience at Blaize was fun with Mrs. Connie. What was your favorite dance class at BLAIZE? Da’More: Ballet. I like the Barre work.

Da’More: This year will be my sixth year at Kandance Da’More: Ballet, Jazz, Tap, African, Rep, Hip hop, FlaStudio mingo, Modern, Tia Chia, Latin Fusion, and Musical Theater. What have you learned from Ms. Kandace Nunn Johnson about dance and life? Dance Life, About Da’More and the Future What do you like about performing on stage? Da’More: I come to life, I shine, get into a dance zone, and have no fear of anything when I am on stage. We all have funny bloopers on stage. Tell us about a funny time that you messed up. Da’More: The biggest blooper for me was during my audition for DADA. I slipped and fell right in front of Debbie Allen. I had to think fast! I couldn’t let her see me sweat so I jumped up and gave her face and kept it moving. Are you planning to make dance your career? Da’More: Yes. I have built my dream board that hangs in my room. I would love dance in a Broadway show one day. Who is your favorite celebrity dancer? Da’More: Misty Copeland, the first African American ballerina dancer who gave me hope against all odds. She is a beautiful dancer. What message do you have for girls your age who want to dance? DaMore: Opportunities are waiting for you. Aspire to do great things, go for it, nothing is impossible! If a celebrity asked you to dance with them tomorrow and pick a song to dance to; what celebrity would you want it to be and what song would you select? DaMore: Beyoncé and the song would be Unsteady. Beyoncé was outside of her comfort zone when she first started out. She was not a dancer, but she is a great singer. You would never know that she was not a dancer by looking at her. When I look at her now, she reminds me that the world is waiting for me and my talent. This is the message in her song Unsteady. “You may not know what path to take but you are ready for whatever comes your way.”

DaMore lives in Tampa, FL with her family. This dynamic dancer is 12 years old, goes to Progress Village Middle Magnet School for the Arts. Her major is dance and math and science are her favorite subjects. She also is a member of the track team and volunteers her time at KanDance studio by assisting instructors with the younger children. When she is not dancing and volunteering, she loves to swim, travel, spend valuable time with her family, and is learning how to bake cakes with her mom. They are fit, talented and incredible performers. The Tampa/St. Petersburg area has its own rising star, a true Renaissance man, Duane Hogg. Duane has been a Content Marketing Program Manager for PSCU for (number of years), in addition, he is a musician, dancers, fitness enthusiast, photographer, and videographer, in addition to other hidden talents that he is yet to reveal. Simply, he is the quintessential Renaissance man of 2017. Inquiring minds want to know what motivates him and how balances it all.

Fitness Journey Duane, were you athletic in high school? Duane: I was an artist and secretly an undercover nerd in high school (laughing). I played recreational sports, casually, but nothing serious until my senior year when I joined the football team. That was my only year as a jock. When did you get into fitness? Duane: I started really getting serious about fitness five years ago. Why were you drawn to exercising and healthy eating? Duane: I always had a desire to be fit and healthy but I lacked the discipline to reach my goals. Finally, I reached a point where I didn’t feel comfortable with the body and mindset I had. I knew I wanted to be a better version of me. Furthermore, I wanted to help others succeed. So, I started an aggressive regimen of power lifting with some friends that were ex-bodybuilders. What do you like about CrossFit? Duane: I like that it challenges me more than any other workout ever has. I also like that it’s so dynamic and offers a wide variety of workouts to keep me engaged. I get bored really easy and love mixing up my workouts. The CrossFit bond is like family, it takes group fitness to whole other level. What move was most challenging for you when you started? Duane: Definitely Overhead Squats. I’m not the most flexible person and this exercise requires a great deal of mobility and technique.

What does your daily diet consist of? Duane: I don’t really call it a diet, it’s just healthy eating to me. I’ve been experimenting recently with intermittent fasting, so I usually eat my first meal around 2 PM. I drink a kale smoothie almost daily, and my meals consist of lean protein (chicken or turkey) and lots of greens. I mostly snack on raw nuts for the bulk of my carb intake. I’ve seen your food prep on Facebook. Do you eat like this all the time or do you prep mainly when you are training? Duane: I food prep every Sunday religiously (pun intended). I don’t play around, for me it’s about building consistent habits that become a part of your lifestyle. There’s always room for improvement, so if I’m training for something specific I’ll alter my habits accordingly. Do you find it hard to stick to your diet or is it second nature for you now? Duane: Yes and no. It has become second nature to food prep and follows the plan but some temptations occur and I have to find the strength to resist them as if it’s day one. That’s how I continue to sharpen my discipline. What is your cheat food or drink? Starbucks is mine! Duane: I’d have to say popcorn at a movie theatre. The pairing is just so perfect!

Dance Life When did you get into dancing? Duane: About two years ago I wandered into a Salsa class with a buddy of mine and after that, I was hooked. Is Salsa the only dance that you do? Duane: No, I actually dance another form of Latin dance called Bachata as well. And of course, Hip hop dance will forever be a part of me.

Dance Life

Do you have a specific female dancer that you perform with? Duane: It depends on the routine. Some routines call for one specific partner, whereas others you can transition between several partners. How does dance help keep you fit? Duane: The cardio, coordination and mental focus have been amazing. When I go to practice, my goal is always to leave drenched in sweat. Have you entered any dance competitions? Duane: I haven’t danced competitively, yet.


La Guitarra When I was little, my Dad used to play guitar. I loved it when he allowed me to hold the pick and strumming away at the strings. I also recalled that I loved the way the wood smelled. How were you introduced to the guitar? Duane: Well I’ve always wanted to play the guitar mostly because it’s a solo instrument. I was gifted a bass guitar a few years ago by a friend and never really took time to learn it. Then my job started a band “Rockovate,” (a band that I am now a part of ) and I was given an opportunity to learn and perform.

How often do you play? Duane: Not as often as I should. Since I have a lot going on, I mostly play it during our performance season. So, I’ll learn a song quickly for the upcoming gig. Then I retire it during off season. Have you written any songs? Duane: Not for the band. But in my spare time, I do write, mostly rhymes, poems, and songs. What type of music do you like to play on the guitar? Duane: R&B, Alternative, Country, Blues, anything with passion and soul in it. Do you play any other instruments? Duane: I don’t. What musicians do you admire? Duane: Kanye West. I just think he’s on another level as an artist. I admire his bold fearlessness. Right or wrong. As a dancer/choreographer, I am in my bliss when creating a new piece. What does playing the guitar do for you? Duane: Keep me on my toes because I’m still learning as I go. But it’s also a surreal feeling because I’ve always wanted to play.

Of course, we were also big fans of the movie “Wedding Crashers,” so when it came time to name our company it was pretty easy.

Duane: Honestly, I sacrifice more sleep than I’d like to admit. I live most of my interests, therefore my free time is usually consumed by exploring them. Have people in your life that support and love what you do. What do you do to relax? Duane: Read. I love to read for education and for pleasure. I just wind down and binge read, that’s my relaxation time.

Do you still do photography and videography? Duane: Not outside of Instagram.

For our single women readers, are you single? Duane: Yes, I am.

What did you like about capturing special moments for your clients? What are you looking for in a mate? Duane: Telling their story through a series of captured moments. Every story was different.

Duane: Intellectual. Determined. Passionate. Beautiful (inside out). She must have a huge sense of humor, I’m a goofball in my comfort zone.

What is the strangest thing that you’ve captured on camera or video? What is your advice for single women who are lookDuane: Hmmm, I’ll have to get back to you on that ing for a good mate? one.

Renaissance Ways and Getting Personal

Duane: Learn to love yourself unconditionally first and never settle. The right one will come along if you are projecting what you are expecting. Be honest with yourself, and make sure your values are aligned with your desires. Hint, bad boys are going to be just that (laughing). Do you have any children?

Webster’s definition of a Renaissance man is a person Duane: I don’t have any children. I have a nephew who has wide interests and is expert in several areas. though and he’s my heart. He’s four years old and this Would you say that this definition sums up who you little guy can make me smile on my worst days.




Do you have a philosophy that you live by? Duane: Be You. Do You. Love You. Basically, we need more self-love, acceptance, and motivation in the world. True freedom comes from not being bound by anyone else’s thought of you. What advice do you have for people who want to adopt a healthy lifestyle with fitness and clean eating? Duane: If you don’t have enough self-discipline, find an accountability partner. Find a workout buddy, personal trainer or group class. Personally, group classes helped me a long time ago to get where I am mentally. When it comes to fitness and diet, don’t think short term. Make small changes in your everyday life that will soon lead to daily habits. Tell everyone, everywhere about your journey (only once you’re on it) so you feel accountable to the world. It works! Do you have a bucket list and what do you want to accomplish next? Duane: I’d like to get into some motivational speaking and coaching eventually. I’m passionate about helping others reach their goals. I’m also doing some acting stuff so stay tuned.

JOEY PART 3

THE PEDIATRIC INTENSIVE CARE UNIT Date of post: August 10, 2014 - Read parts 1 and 2 of this blog. Darlos Olmsted Wallinga Wife, Mother, Dance Instructor, Writer and Blogger

Mother of five age 19, 17, 10, 7 and 5, raising a teenager with Autism and Cognitive Delay, also a toddler with Hypoglycemia and more challenges.

We arrived in the Pediatric Intensive care unit. These rooms are huge and I am thankful that we did not require the space. Big rooms provide accommodations for a large number of doctors and nurses to work on a patient. We are blessed to have had no more than four people in the room at one time. The view was amazing in my opinion. Palm trees are my weakness‌ Anyways, we moved Joey from the ambulatory stretcher to the Intensive care crib. Joey is a force to be reckoned


with when confined. Imagine if you will an alligator (yet another topic for another time) being wrangled for relocation. They have to tape their jaws shut. If you superimpose Joey’s face on the alligator you would have an accurate picture in your head of the scene. They hooked Joey up to all the monitors and checked his glucose yet again. This child has now been poked with far too many needles to expect him to cooperate at this point. The good news is that his glucose was holding steady at 75! Gatorade was given to Joey to boost his hydration with additional help from the IV fluids. The bad news is that intensive care crib was a no go in Joey’s opinion. I was already planning on staying the night with him and they had a bed set up for me prior to us arriving. I signed the papers so that Joey could sleep with me in the bed. We moved Joey to the bed where I laid down with him. He immediately calmed down. Needless to say, I was flattered and feeling loved. My husband then arrived with Cody, our oldest son, to say goodnight. We talked with the nurse about what we could expect with Joey’s symptoms. All she could really tell us was that we were in the best place that we could be in. An Intensive Care Unit. That hurt more than I can say. My husband gave us kisses good night, Cody promised to be a helper and my husband and Cody left for home. We settled in for the night with the movie “Despicable Me” which I also had never seen. Cute movie by the way. The night, however, was anything but restful. Like anyone who has ever spent a night in the hospital, we were woken for vitals and glucose readings every couple hours. Joey had maintained a stable glucose level all night! The only complaint that I had was the fact that Joey was so hydrated that he soaked the bed…WITH ME IN IT!!! I was still too happy that my boy was returning to normal to even care! By morning Joey Was bouncing off the walls wanting to be disconnected from everything holding him down. He so wanted to get out of bed! No such luck yet. It was breakfast time! Joey ate his entire plate of French toast, eggs, and bacon as well as most of mine! This child was apparently starving to death. The doctor came in and said that he had no reason to keep Joey any longer and discharged him. I was concerned and confused. The doctor had no answers other than it could have been a fluke or Joey may have Type 1 Diabetes. He just said to watch him closely and walked out the door. I sat there in shock. How could they completely discharge us not knowing what was causing this? How could they justify this? I still have no answers for this. My husband and Cody came to pick us up in utter shock. There were no words spoken other than we are thankful that God has given us another day together. With a swipe of my pen and a brief description of hypoglycemia as a suspected diagnosis, we were out the door and on our way home. The Importance of Self-care By, Judhit Mills

I’ve been learning a lot about the importance of self-care lately. Being a mom and wife is my life and joy, but I’ve realized that I can’t enjoy either without taking care of myself. My mind has felt cluttered and stretched thin which has made my day to day life incredibly hectic. I’ve reacted to situations and people I love in dishonorable ways. At times, my tone in conversations comes off disrespectful. My thoughts became never ending and my mind became restless. So, self-care came to mind when I started lashing out at my husband and having less patience with everyone and everything. At first, I would try to do little things that didn’t involve anything other than myself. But whenever I would sit down to watch Netflix or do my nails a feeling would start to sit in. Guilt. It would slowly take over me. It would show its ugly face and I wouldn’t be able to shake it. I would have to get up and do something to feel better about myself. What an exhausting cycle! Guilt is such a manipulative feeling that can rob you of many things in life. It can make you think that you’re a bad mom or wife for putting yourself first from time to time. Even putting myself first, once a day, always made me feel uncomfortable.


Self-care looks different for every woman. For me, I’ve realized, that it needs to be two things.

Number one: I need to sit down with my Bible and soak up Gods word. I didn’t realize how much I was depriving myself until I opened my journal and Bible not too long ago. I really missed my time with Jesus and I realized how long it had been since I spent time with Him when I looked at my last journal date. Since I’ve placed my devotions on the top of my list, my clarity of mind has returned. Number two: Setting time aside for my craft. My writing. My passion. Working towards my goals which are few but great. This is such a biggie for me as well. I’ve always been a bit ambitious and I crave work and creativity. You see, moms, taking care of us, yourself, is so important. I’m new to this but I’m quickly realizing that I need time for myself. Not time for mommy, but for Judhit. Not wifey, me. Time for the individual that I was prior to marriage and a baby. The one who wants to pursue Jesus with all her heart, the one that wants to write and publish, the one who loves to workout, the one who has goals and pursues them, the one who isn’t afraid of anything and pushes boundaries.

My husband needs me. My baby needs me. I need me.

So, set some time aside, mommies. Rebuke that guilt of always needing to clean the house, doing laundry, dishes, more laundry, etc. Quiet your mind. Get to know you again. Read. Don’t read. Doesn’t matter. Just... set aside at least 30 minutes a day for you. For your heart. For your mind. Here are ten ideas that can help you get started with your “me time” 1. Read your favorite novel. 2. Pamper yourself with a massage, pedicure or both! 3. Exercise. Go for a walk or a bike ride. 4. Take a nap. 5. Go shopping and spoil yourself. 6. Binge watch your favorite show on Netflix. 7. Write down your goals. Document what you want to accomplish. 8. Things you’ve always dreamed of doing. 9. Join a fitness class with a friend. Do something that will get you out of the house. 10. When your husband gets home, drink some wine and unwind.

Yuan Yuan Tan (Yuanyuan Tan) The world’s most recognized Asian ballerina


It is such a joy to watch ballerinas of all colors grace the stage with their technique and passion. However, being a Principal dancer in a company is no small feat and seems to still elude many dancers of color. This is why we chose Yuanyuan Tan for our Legends spotlight as her journey through dance is a remarkable one. When Tan joined the San Francisco Ballet as a soloist in 1995 she was promoted to principal dancer in 1997. She definitely ascended the ranks at a rapid pace and has represented her home of Shanghai, China well. Along with Shiori Kase, Evelyn Cisneros, and Misty Copeland, YuanyuanTan is a beacon of light for girls all over the world who do not fit the stereotypical role of a ballerina.


Flip of a coin Born in in Shanghai in 1977, Yuan Yuan Tan started dancing at the tender age of 11 at Shanghai Dance School. Her father did not approve of her taking dance lessons. He wanted her to become a medical doctor. However, her mother was very supportive and had secretly taken Yaun Yuan to auditions. Tan’s mother, Su Zhang, knew that her little girl was destined for dance as Yuan Yuan would never sit still whenever music came on. Due to this split decision, Tan’s parents settled their disagreement by a coin toss. The results, the coin landed on heads! Hence, she was able to attend dance lessons. After seven years of taking ballet classes as Shanghai Dance School, she went abroad to study ballet. Yuan Yuan said this in an interview, 10/19/15, with Jessie Bryson “It was hard to go abroad at a young age, but I’ve learned so much.”


Hard work rewarded Although Tan as destined to be a Ballerina, staying on top of her game required that she work diligently. She won multiple international awards starting at the early age of 15 to include a gold medal and the Nijinsky Award at the 1st Japan International Ballet and Modern Dance Competition (1993) and a gold medal in the 5th International Ballet Competition in Paris (1992). At 18, she became a soloist dancer with the San Francisco Ballet Company, which is simply groundbreaking. Two years later, in 1997, at age 20, she was promoted to principal dancer, achieving the highest position for a ballet dancer. This was indeed an unusual ascending path. At this time Yan was the youngest principal dancer ever in the history of the San Francisco Ballet company.


Lead female roles, choreographing memorable pieces, and media Yuanyuan has danced in Helgi Tomasson's Giselle, Swan Lake, Romeo and Juliet, Nutcracker, Tomasson/Possokhov's Don Quixote, Morris' Sylvia, and Lubovitch's Othello. She fashioned roles in Tomasson's The Fifth Season, Chi-Lin, Silver Ladders, and 7 for Eight, Possokhov's Magrittomania, Damned, and Study in Motion, Wheeldon's Continuum and Quaternary, and Welch's Tu Tu. Her productions includes Ashton's ThaĂŻs Pas de Deux, Balanchine's Symphony in C, Theme and Variations, Concerto Barocco, Prodigal Son, and Apollo, Duato's Without Words, Robbins' In the Night, Dances at a Gathering, and Dybbuk, and Makarova's Paquita. Outside of the dance world, she has been featured in the Chinese versions of Vogue, Esquire, and Tatler. Tan is also a brand ambassador for Van Cleef & Arpels and Rolex.


One of the first If you did not know, San Francisco Ballet School is the country’s oldest classical academy and is the official School of San Francisco Ballet. When San Francisco Ballet’s artistic director, Helgi Tomasson saw YuanYuan in Paris, he invited her to join San Francisco Ballet in 1995 as a soloist. Two years later, in 1997, YuanYuan was promoted to Principal Dancer. She was the first Asian dancer to achieve that position at San Francisco Ballet. To date, she still proudly holds that title. In 2015, the San Francisco Ballet announced its sophomore visit to the People’s Republic of China as they prepared an ambitious two-city, six-performance, and nine-ballet tour. To end the October tour, they returned to China six years after the company’s debut in 2009, the opening performance in Beijing and the closing engagement in Shanghai celebrated Principal Dancer Yuan Yuan Tan’s tenure with the company.


Retiring at 35 and what she’s doing today Here is what 35 year old Tan said in the 8/22/12 interview, “The Chinese Ballet Queen” by Wang Yiming: "For me, 35 is an amazing age. And I receive more invitations to perform than ever," she said. "I used to believe that ballet careers are like a parabola, starting from a point, climbing to a peak and then going down, due to deteriorating physical conditions. But now, I feel that my physical conditions still allow me to dance on stage and I am still at the peak of my career." However, several years ago, Tan announced publicly that she would retire at 35, which stirred much public discussion. "Now, I am more careful with my words and I never mention retiring anymore," Tan said. "I should not limit myself." To date, Yuanyuan continues to give back to her community in China and abroad by sharing her gift of dance with youth. She keeps her fans up to date on her Facebook page and other social media platforms. Recently in 2016, Tan was invited to be a guest on one of China’s most popular TV variety shows called "Day Day Up", by Hunan TV. She stated in her post that it was her first time visiting and the first time she brought ballet to the variety show.
