My passion for architecture and design comes from my hope to impact people’s lives. Architecture has the ability to affect one’s physical and psychological presence. We are constantly interacting with our environment, and the way we think, act, and feel and can be a direct reaction to that environment. We need to create spaces and experiences that inspire us and improve our way of life. As an environmentally conscientious designer, it is essential to recycle, minimize waste, and reduce energy use in every way possible. The structures we design should be ecologically, socially, and economically sustainable. We need to produce environments that adhere to the people that occupy them and encourage economic growth. Technology is constantly changing and as designers we must know how to apply new technologies to push the limits of our creativity. However, we can’t forget that architecture is a tangible and physical object, and the greatest connection to our mind is our hand. Physical models and sketching are as essential to the design process as the computer.

USE/REUSE
Use/ Reuse is a sculpture for the Tex Fab Repeat Competition. This sculpture explores parametrics, digital fabrication, and the ability to create a modular unit that can be reused for a variety of functions. The sculpture is designed to be assembled for an exhibit in the atrium of the University of Houston School of Architecture and then dismantled and transformed into an assortment of objects.

The Dakine project started from a series of 2d images that were extruded and modified until they were transformed into a storefront for Dakine extreme sports accessories and clothing. As the consumers enter the store they experience the intensity of the Dakine brand. The hard angles mimic the mountains and the extreme lifestyles of the Dakine consumers.

In May and June of 2009 I lived and worked in a lower income intercity neighborhood of Cincinnati. While living there I witnessed gentrification, poverty, and helped the community by designing and remodeling an office space in an affordable housing apartment complex. I did the remodel drawings that were stamped by architect John Blake and sent to the state for building permits. I designed and built a conference table that can be split apart and moved to the side of the room to be used a buffet table when the office needs to be used as a gathering space. This project won the Over the Rhine Community Housing Gold Hammer Award.

The Clifton Ohio Branch Library is in need of vast expansion to accommodate an increasing number of users. The design for this building comes from in-depth interviews and interaction with the community. Off the entrance is a courtyard that engages the busy street life on Ludlow. The periodicals, children’s area, and digital media are on the first two levels allowing the public to come and go freely. The upper level, which allows for quieter browsing and reading, leads to a roof garden that is also designed for quiet reading and reflection.
