MESSAGE FROM THE MANAGING DIRECTORS...

As we reach the 7th annual Juvenis Festival, we could not be more grateful to those who have helped the festival become what it is today. Kingston's youth arts community is innovative, passionate and resilient and we are proud to have a part in sharing their work with its audiences. We experienced first hand the impact of the pandemic and after two entirely virtual festivals, we are excited to welcome you back to in person programming. The world has forever been changed but young artists are stronger for having continued to create and chosen to share their work and passion with others. We thank you for engaging with the festival this year and hope you enjoy Juvenis 2022!

Kate Seip Co-Managing Director

LAND ACKNOWLEDMENT The Juvenis Festival takes place in the city colonially known as Kingston on the territory of the Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples. We would like to acknowledge the traditional occupants of this land, to honour those who call this land home since time immemorial, and to honour those who live here now but whose spirits are tied to other parts of Turtle Island. It is with humility and gratitude that we honour and respect the privilege to learn, grow, connect, and nurture the creativity of our youth on this land. Today and every day, we invite you to reflect on your relationship to the land, the people, and the ongoing history of the place(s) you call home.

This year, the Juvenis Festival is celebrating the local and broader youth arts community through the “I am an Artist” campaign. We are highlighting the under 30 community of Kingston and beyond as they perform, create, and collaborate with other artists. “I am an Artist” means Life of August, A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder, 13: The Musical and live performance. It means Saudade, Mixed Media, and visual mediums. It means Battle of the Beats, Viva Voce, poetry and music. It means young people making art to share with their community. “I am an Artist” means Juvenis Festival and together, we are a diverse demographic of multidisciplinary artists that hope to strengthen our community’s connection in the process.
