This studio began with experiments in light and form inspired by a natural movement of matter. I began by interpreting these forms into maquettes for light and form study. These maquettes were gradually refined into architectural spaces and program all stemming from the initial inspiration. I worked with the team on a large staircase in Piccadilly participating in designing details, 3D modelling and working back and forth with the fabricators on translation the Rhino model into a mill-ready CNC file and fabrication drawings. The spiral stair consists of a combination of structural steel, plywood core, solid timber treads and an intricate use of veneered lumber. The stair cantilevers off of a central stringer that forms a helix from the basement to the first floor. The forms slowly morph into trads, railings and stalks with a smooth `growing`feeling of transition from component to component. The projects required a lot of high detail modelling for the tolerances between steel structure and CNC’ed wood cladding.

CARscadden In t ern ship 01-08, 2016 Va n c ouver, BC

At Carscadden Stokes McDonald Architects I was able to work intimately with a number of projects at a variety of stages and scales. Galt Street Flats was a project that I had the opportunity to work on from the beginning of working drawings to issueing for tender, meeting and coordinating with clients, consultants and the City of Vancouver. The project is a four storey residential project, the first of it’s density in an area of single family homes. It was exciting to work in depth with the ongoing structural, mechanical, architectural and code considerations on this project as we developed the tender set. I also worked at the conceptual design stage on two commercial projects, a residential renovation and a study pod at UBC, producing working drawings for office interiors and a number of community centres.

ARQUITECTONICA In t ern ship 09-12, 2014 Mia m i, U SA

I worked on a variety of large scale projects with a few different teams at Arquitectonica`s head office in Miami. I spent a large part of my time working on Brickell City Centre, a mixed use complex covering four blocks in downtown Miami. I produced and edited a variety of working drawings including the interior detailing of luxury apartment suites. I also worked on renders and visualizations such as the bathroom shown above as well as interior signage and details throughout offices and public areas. On other arquitectonica projects I produced presentation boards and renders for client meetings.

Easy access storage area quently used items; pens,

I wanted to design and build a desk accomodating a wide range of shelving and storage needs and maintaining a clear work space without sacrificing the convinience of having many tools close at hand. A two-tiered worktop was the solution to providing open storage for laptops, rulers, writing utensils and other small items. The lower shelving is for large and/or heavy items like a PC tower or books. The weight of the items aid in balancing the desks cantilevered top. The shelves are open on both sides making the form and construction of the desk apparent and when occupied will display the items from the front and rear. The desk has the flexibility to be placed against a wall or sit in the open and act as a center-piece to a room.

The Centre for Information Technology and Architecture [CITA] built this installation with a workshop during the ACADIA conference in Cambridge. The concept of ‘The Rise’ was focused on a growing distributed structural system which can adapt and grow to suit different needs as opposed to a static traditional structure. There are two distinct portions of this installation. There are modules, made out of lasercut acrylic and tensile rods of GFRP. The modules or ‘nodes’ serve as joining points for the tunsile members ‘grown’ in grasshopper.

The Cube was F_RM LAB`s installation for ACADIA [Association for Computer Aided Design in Architecture] conference held in Cambridge. Using Arduino software kits and lasercut plexiglass, an interactive canopy was created to respond to the occupants position.

Motion sensors picked up the movement of the occupants and activated servo motors that would lift the canopy in response to an occupant, creating a reactive canopy. Personally, I worked mainly with programming the Arduino boards that ran the servo motors and manufacturing the plexiglass components. T

The Orkney Isles off the coast of Scotland had their own language, a variation of Old Norse known as Norrœna, or Norn. Remnants of the language can be clearly heard in the Orcadian dialect today. In particular there is a plethora of words in the Orcadian dialect that describe in detail atmospheric and weather conditions that loom large in the Orkney imagination. The Isles are situated such that though they are in the North Atlantic they receive warm air and ocean currents from the gulf stream creating the unique climate. As a result of the geographic and climactic situation of the Isles the weather and atmospheres have produced a cultural imagination and memory that is present in the Orcadian dialect that stems from the Norrœna language spoken as early as AD 800. The building is situated in a courtyard organization around a central dome or sky-space clad in weathering brass in order to deflect wind and rain from exterior circulations and gather rain water in cisterns for later use, taking advantage of the frequent precipiation. The majority of circulation is exterior but shielded enough make even extreme weather conditions occupyable when fully dressed but open enough to allow the sound and sight of rain, wind, mist, sea and sky to transform the experience of the architecture and site.

Programatically the building is divided into three levels. After entry through the skyspace at grade there is the kitchen, lounge, dining, and archive spaces with expansive views to the south and west. The office and reception are also found at the entry level. From grade one can ascend or descend on spiral ramps that circle the dome. Below, are the rainwater cisterns, unconditioned but shielded from the elements which serve as circulation for the sauna, hot pool and cold plunge pool. Above are the accommodations, lodge manager and artists residence joined by an exterior corridor that sheds rain to form the opposite wall.
