The disc golf course at Sierra College is a hidden gem, and it’s rated the third most difficult course in the state of California. My favorite thinking spot is a large outcropping by the 11th hole. If you happen

to look up at the heavens on a clear summer evening, you may find yourself taken aback by what you see: hundreds of twinkling bulbs in the sky. We like to call them stars. Welcome to the mountains. Add stargazing to Truckee’s world-class activities: stars are literally more visible to the naked eye here. This is for two reasons: first, we have less light pollution, and thus our eyes can adjust to the darkness more readily. Second, at around 6,000ft, there is less atmosphere to muddle through—we’re literally closer to them. The stars are especially brilliant when venturing a few miles out from town. While camping, I love to set up a hammock for just this purpose: turn off your camp lights, settle down, and enjoy. The twinkling will get brighter and brighter as your eyes adjust. It’s magic.

STARGAZING EVENTS IN TRUCKEE If camping isn’t your thing, there are plenty of other ways to get your star fix. Check out Tahoe Star Tours’ summer stargazing schedule at the Dark Skies Cosmoarium at Northstar on Thursday through Saturday evenings from mid-June through August (come back in the winter for stargazing snowshoe tours complete with s’mores). Looking for something a little more adventurous? Tahoe Adventure Company leads Full Moon Kayak Tours—offered throughout the summer—for an unforgettable full moon stargazing experience on Lake Tahoe.

ASTROPHOTOGRAPHY There’s nothing quite as breathtaking as witnessing the Milky Way with your naked eye. Second to that? Capturing that beauty with your camera. Truckee is the perfect place to learn astrophotography! You’ll need the following: a DSLR (or really any camera that’s not your iPhone—even a GoPro will capture the Milky Way when tuned to the right settings), a tripod, and a headlamp. Settle on a composition ahead of time—do you want to shoot at Donner Summit with Rainbow Bridge in the foreground? Maybe out at Martis Valley? When planning your composition, you’ll want to know exactly where the Milky Way’s galactic plane will be in the sky, and especially, the bright galactic center. There are several helpful apps with VR technology to pinpoint star location during the day, so you can plan ahead. For best results, you’ll need to shoot when there’s no moon in the sky. Of course, you can skip the guesswork and learn from a pro: Atelier regularly offers nightwalk photo courses with local photographer Grant Kaye, who will teach you how to use your camera properly to capture the heavens. Whether you choose to enjoy the Milky Way with your naked eye on a clear night, through a powerful telescope atop a mountain, or within your camera lens—prepare to be wowed by the stunning, unspoiled beauty that can only be found here in the mountains.

The film not only shows the incredible beauty Truckee offers and its vibrant community, but also includes the night sky over Donner Lake. Shot and produced by longtime local photographer Grant Kaye, he describes one clip “as a panoramic view of the area with a fantastic intervention of a lightning storm and a brilliant display of the Milky Way.” Video will be released in 2018 and will be available for viewing on Truckee.com/timelapse.

Youth and adult programs, camps, classes, indoor track, fitness center, climbing wall, and meeting rooms. The gym has the ability to support up to two full court basketball games, two volleyball courts, two futsal games and four pickleball courts. Drop in basketball and pickleball games are ongoing throughout the year. TRUCKEE RIVER REGIONAL PARK Just 1/2 mile south of downtown, 10050 Brockway Rd., this park offers 62-acres of facilities including tennis and basketball courts, picnic sites, ballfields, batting cage, and children’s play area. Most areas may be reserved by application at the Rec & Park office. LEGACY TRAIL Starting at the Regional Park to Riverview Sports Park, the paved trail allows for biking, walking, and dogs on leashes along the Truckee River. The scenic trail exhibits 12 different native and naturalized plant communities of the Truckee area, with picnic sites and benches along the way. SKATE PARK Located at Truckee River Regional Park on the corner of Brockway Rd. and Estates Dr., the 10,000 square foot concrete facility is equipped with skateboarding elements for all age levels and abilities. TRUCKEE DISC GOLF COURSE Located the backside of Truckee River Regional Park; the Truckee Disc Golf Course has 18 holes with scenic views of the Truckee River and surrounding mountains. “SALTY” GEBHARDT AMPHITHEATER This landscaped bowl in the Regional Park offers sloped lawn seating for up to 2,000 people. The Amphitheater is the site of the Music in the Park concerts on Wednesday nights, beginning in June. Available to rent. FiftyFifty Brewing Co., founded in Truckee in 2007, has become a global brand. Distributed in over 20 states and 10 countries, they have captured 20+ international and national awards for quality and innovation. They recently completed a major expansion enabling them to increase their production capabilities. Not surprisingly, they were rated by USA Today as one of the Top Mountain Town Breweries in the country. FiftyFifty self-proclaims they make “the best damn beer possible.” Their award-winning Eclipse barrelaged Imperial Stout proves just that. Local hot spot Alibi Ale Works finally answers the “what to do on a Tuesday night in Truckee” question. Highlights include bingo nights and a vivacious live music calendar. I’m not ashamed to say I’ve worked my way through the entire nacho menu (order the Mediterranean). And let’s not forget about that daring beer lineup. Don’t miss the Rye IPA, Dark Saison or Berliner Solo. All beers are made with water straight from Lake Tahoe—what’s not to love? Truckee’s hidden secret, Tahoe Mountain Brewing, is not to be missed. The Pioneer Center taproom is a cozy spot to escape after a long day—I have fond memories of spending sunny summer afternoons here with friends after a long bike ride. Their brews are simply fantastic —the Provisions Saison might be my favorite beer in all of Tahoe—but you can’t go wrong with anything on their menu. First time? Try one of the barrel-aged ales.

How could you not? The times I have left Truckee to travel, I always come back with a much fonder appreciation of this beautiful and special place. The outdoors has always been my preferred lifestyle and Truckee has it all...skiing in the winter, hiking and lake adventure in the summer, with so much in between. WHAT DOES BIG LIFE MEAN TO ME?

I work hard to play harder! Weekends in the winter always consist of at least one ski day and possibly an Après after. In the summer, I spend time after work soaking up the sunshine at either the Truckee River Winery, playing bocce ball or on the softball field or playing competitive Z league co-ed softball. The weekends in the summer you’ll typically find me backpacking in the area or lounging by the lake. There is so much adventure to be had in this beautiful home we call Truckee.

PUBLIC ART

There’s lot of local art popping up around Truckee. Some of the latest cool exhibits of local artists include: “The Band,” a set of four recycled steel sculptures can be seen along Donner Pass Road in Brickelltown. Created by Mountain Forge, a local family owned blacksmith shop, “The Band” was designed and fabricated as prototypes for a commissioned display in San Francisco. “The Band brings a little color, a little movement, and a little sound if you will, to match the modern vibe of downtown Truckee,” explains Toni Standteiner, lead blacksmith on the project. “Locomotion” giant bike sculpture by Fred Besch stands at the entrance of a mini-plaza in Brickelltown. Besch, originally from New York, is a brilliant and creative artist fascinated by all things mechanical from an early age. A landscape contractor by trade, Besch owns Earthworks, a Truckee-based landscape construction company. “DeRailed” bike rack made from Donner Summit railroad tracks, made by Bernie LaForest of Striker Forge, can be seen in the center island in front of the Train Depot. “Mountain Flowers” playful 16’ tall metal flowers planted in the roundabout greet those going to the Truckee Community Recreation Center. Donner State Park never disappoints. It’s the

perfect place for families wanting to combine an educational museum experience with camping, hiking, biking, boat rentals, swimming, and even snowshoeing. Forget the TV and the internet. Unplug and connect. The Junior Ranger Program is ideal for children between 7 and 12 who have an interest in hiking and observing nature. Earn badges. Make friends. It’s free of charge for those who have paid parking or camping fees. The Sierra Speaker Series takes place on the third Saturday of every month and has featured experts presenting information on exciting topics ranging from legendary winters to mountain lions. Truckee Thursdays weekly street festival is a favorite family tradition during the summer months. A perfect way to end a summer day or kick off a night on the town, Truckee Thursdays transforms Historic Downtown Truckee into a lively venue where local artisans, organizations and businesses and promote their products and services. You’ll see everything from bee keepers sharing samples of local honey to craftsmen selling handmade furniture to environmental organizations promoting awareness. Bopping with live music, a beer garden, and food vendors, Truckee Thursdays is a great place to stroll and soak in the perfection of summer evenings in the Truckee.

Moody’s Jazz Camps: A must-

do for musically inclined kids. For five mornings during the summer, kids and top-notch jazz musicians from all over the country jam and talk music theory at Moody’s Restaurant located in Historic Downtown Truckee. Evenings, campers perform songs before appreciative parents and Moody’s patrons to put an extra-fun spin on Truckee Thursdays. This program is free. Register in advance. Arrange a game of basketball during the free gym hours or run the indoor track when the weather is harsh. The rotating schedule of events makes it easy to get in shape and socialize. Climbing wall: Kids can begin mastering the basics of climbing with instructors. Community swimming pool: Dive into the lap pool or splash and play. This space is great for the whole family. Disc Golf

Located on the beautiful Sierra College Tahoe-Truckee Campus right off I-80, this wooded disc golf course is ranked as the third most difficult course in California. Play this 18-basket course that offers elevation changes on each hole. It

is best suited for experienced players. The Sierra College gate is open from 9:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday and closes at 4:00 p.m. on Friday. There is a $3 parking fee for parking on campus. No smoking. Dogs are not allowed. For after-hours playing, parking is available at the shopping center across the street with no fees. The Truckee Regional Park Disc Golf Course, built in 1999, has been a popular family attraction for many years. Situated alongside the Truckee River, this course provides scenic views combined with easy access to Truckee’s Regional Park and amphitheater. This is a slightly hilly to flat course that is easy to navigate and play. It is ideal for beginners and groups who have children and dogs (on leashes). This course, located on Brockway Road by the Truckee Regional Park, is free for all and is open until 10:00 p.m. everyday.

Trout Creek Trail

If you’re in the mood to talk a leisurely bike ride, walk, or skate between Tahoe Donner and Downtown Truckee, hop on the Trout Creek Trail. This is an ideal way to spend some family time. The scenic trail is moderately hilly and offers just the right amount of exercise to start off your day or wind up an evening. It offers lovely views of Coyote Moon Golf course, Trout Creek, and rugged mountain terrain. Try using the trail as way to head down to Truckee Thursdays. Just park and walk! Benches and trash cans line this paved trail and make it easy to relax as you make your way up or down. The trail is accessible from Northwoods Blvd. in Tahoe Donner and the new ‘’Trout Creek Pocket Park’’ on Bridge Street in Downtown Truckee.

Tahoe Truckee Airport Park

There’s nothing like spending an afternoon simply watching planes take off and land at a little airport. Identifying the various makes and models of airplanes or watching them navigate the wind is a delightful experience made especially enjoyable by spectacular views like the ones we have at Truckee Tahoe Airport. Grab lunch or a sweet treat from Red Truck Café while the kids play at the grassy park located right off the runway. Bask in the warm summer sun and relax. Roger that!

I came to Truckee because I wanted to ski and climb while going to college at the University of Nevada Reno. The community was full of people who climbed, kayaked, and skied. I had a good job ski patrolling during the winter and the slow shoulder seasons offered a quiet time to enjoy the crags or kayak and cycle. WHAT DOES BIG LIFE MEAN TO ME?

Balance! I enjoy working hard and I really enjoy playing hard. From my doorstep I can go running with my daughter and never see a soul. We camp and boat at Stampede and Donner and Tahoe, all just a short trip away. I often travel for work. Easy access to a regional hub airport allowing global travel in a timely manner, is a huge benefit to the Reno/ Tahoe community. Our community is amazing. If you stand in a crowd there are always exceptional people who do meaningful things—things that help people. I’m inspired by people who serve their community, work, raise a family and still take time to enjoy the Truckee Tahoe Region. That is a life with purpose, that’s a Big Life! The long distance hiking trail is 2,650 miles long that runs from Canada to Mexico primarily through protected wilderness. There are several access points in the Truckee area. GLACIER MEADOW LOOP TRAIL

MILEAGE: 0.5 mile loop DIFFICULTY: Very easy USE LEVEL: Very heavy ACCESS: Unattended parking is not permitted at the I-80 rest areas on Donner Summit. There is a Forest Service trailhead with restrooms and water. Take the Castle Peak/Boreal Ridge Road exit. On the south side there is a sign reading: Tahoe National Forest Trailhead, Donner Summit, Pacific Crest Trail. Follow the directions and turn east 0.4 mile to the trailhead. This trailhead provides access to: Pacific Crest Trail, Glacier Meadow Loop, Summit Lake (2.0 miles one way), Warren Lake (7.0 miles one way), and Sand Ridge Lake (6.0 miles one way). PACIFIC CREST TRAIL (PCT) I-80 TO DONNER SUMMIT

MILEAGE: 6.0 miles one way DIFFICULTY: Difficult USE LEVEL: Heavy ACCESS: See Glacier Meadows Loop Trail. MT. JUDAH LOOP

MILEAGE: 4.5 miles round trip DIFFICULTY: Moderate USE LEVEL: Heavy ACCESS: Pacific Crest Trail—From Hwy 40, east of Donner Ski Ranch, turn into the unpaved parking lot before the snow gate and begin the hike on the PCT heading south.

PACIFIC CREST TRAIL (PCT) DONNER SUMMIT TO SQUAW VALLEY

MILEAGE: 15 miles one way DIFFICULTY: Very difficult USE LEVEL: Moderate ACCESS: You will need two cars to hike this trail. Leave one at Squaw Valley and drive the other to the Pacific Crest Trail. Pacific Crest Trail—From Hwy 40, east of Donner Ski Ranch, turn into the unpaved parking lot before the snow gate and begin the hike on the PCT heading south. LOWER LOLA MONTEZ LAKE TRAIL

MILEAGE: 6.5 miles round trip DIFFICULTY: Moderate USE LEVEL: Light TOPOGRAPHIC MAP: Soda Springs ACCESS: Take the Soda Springs exit off I-80. On the north side of the freeway follow the paved road east past the fire station for 0.3 mile to the parking area. CASTLE PEAK

MILEAGE: 5.3 miles round trip DIFFICULTY: Moderate USE LEVEL: Heavy TOPOGRAPHIC MAP: Norden ACCESS: Take the Boreal/Castle Peak exit of I-80. Park where the road turns to dirt. HOLE IN THE GROUND

MILEAGE: 7.8 miles one way DIFFICULTY: Technical Challenge (for bicycles): Difficult to very difficult. PHYSICAL CHALLENGE: Strenuous for bikes, very strenuous for hikers, due to length, altitude, and lack of bailout options. USE LEVEL: Moderate TOPOGRAPHIC MAP: Norden, Independence Lake, Soda Springs ACCESS: Take the Castle Peak exit off I-80. Head north on the Castle Peak Road approximately 1.5 miles.

MILEAGE: 5.0 miles one way DIFFICULTY: Easy USE LEVEL: Moderate ACCESS: From downtown, head east on Brockway Road. Just past the Palisades Drive stoplight, turn left into Truckee River Regional Park. The trail begins here or from East River Street downtown. Truckee’s signature trail, the Truckee River Legacy Trail follows the river’s south side for 5 miles, crossing Martis Creek via a bridge, and ends with a climb to the Glenshire neighborhood. Providing scenic views and access to Truckee River Regional Park and Riverview Sports Park. Look for interpretive signage along the trail. This paved trail is a great ride for bike riders, dog walkers and people out for a stroll.

DONNER MEMORIAL STATE PARK LAKESHORE INTERPRETIVE TRAIL

MILEAGE: 2.5 round trip DIFFICULTY: Easy USE LEVEL: Heavy ACCESS: Donner Memorial State Park Trailside exhibits. The path leads to and along Donner Lake. COLDSTREAM CANYON

MILEAGE: Varies out and back DIFFICULTY: Very easy USE LEVEL: Heavy ACCESS: From I-80 take the Truckee Donner Memorial State Park exit, west of Truckee. Follow the paved road past the Truckee Donner Lodge for about 0.5 mile and park. Start walking on the road. SAWTOOTH TRAIL

MILEAGE: 9 mile loop DIFFICULTY: Moderate USE LEVEL: Heavy ACCESS: From downtown Truckee, head east on Brockway Road. Turn right on Palisades Drive, go up the hill. Turn right onto Silver Fir, then left onto Thelin. Look for Forest Service Road #6 on your right. Start there or drive further up the road and pick another starting point. Fabulous vistas. COMMEMORATIVE EMIGRANT TRAIL

MILEAGE: 15 miles one way DIFFICULTY: Moderate USE LEVEL: Moderate ACCESS: Take Hwy 89 North 2.3 miles to Country Rd. 780 (Alder Creek Trail Rd.). Turn left (west) on CR 780 and proceed 3 miles on the road. The trail starts on the south side of road CR 780 across from road CR 780-12. The trail ends at the Stampede Reservoir. To shorten this hike by 3 miles, start at Hwy 89 and the Donner Camp picnic site then head to Stampede. To shorten this hike by 6 miles begin on Hwy 89 at Prosser Creek bridge. DONNER LAKE RIM TRAIL

MILEAGE: Currently 15 miles are complete, with 9 of them open to bicycle use. Once completed there will be a 23 mile loop. DIFFICULTY: Technical Challenge (for bicycles): Some parts are moderate, others are very difficult. PHYSICAL CHALLENGE: Strenuous USE LEVEL: Moderate ACCESS: There are currently three trailheads: 1. Tahoe Donner Trailhead parking lot off of Glacier Way. 2. Donner Summit: Hikers and equestrians can use the Pacific Crest Trail, and mountain bikers can access the trail via Castle Valley Road. 3. MILEAGE: 2.5 miles one way DIFFICULTY: Very easy USE LEVEL: Heavy ACCESS: From Truckee, head north 7.2 miles on Hwy 89 N and park on the east side near the Sage Creek Bridge. Follow the trail by the creek to Stampede Reservoir. In the spring the wildflowers are phenomenal and in the fall it is a great place to view the Kokanee salmon spawning. TAHOE RIM TRAIL

MILEAGE: 165 miles of single-track, multi-use trail winding around Lake Tahoe. DIFFICULTY: Physical Challenge: Easy to strenuous USE LEVEL: Heavy ACCESS: Two popular trips closest to Truckee are: 1. Ride or hike north on the TRT to the Mt. Rose Wilderness Boundary. Spectacular views of Lake Tahoe, and wildflowers galore. A side trip to the Martis Peak lookout can offer views of Mt. Lassen, which is over 100 miles away. DISTANCE: Out and back 14 miles. 2. Hike or ride south on the TRT to Watson Lake. The trail is rolling here, and travels through a mature forest. At the bottom of the off ramp, head north (uphill) about 300 yards to the trailhead where there is a large parking area and kiosks with a map of the area and background information. MILEAGE: 2 miles one way DIFFICULTY: Moderate USE LEVEL: Moderate ACCESS: Four lakes at the end of this Donner Summit Trail. Mileage to the first lake is two miles and one and a half miles further is High Loch Leven Lake. Plenty of swimming and a great place to picnic. DONNER SUMMIT CANYON

MILEAGE: 8.0 DIFFICULTY: Moderate USE LEVEL: Heavy ACCESS: Starts just south of Brockway Summit, on Hwy 267. From Truckee, it is on the north side of the highway. Follow the main road, which is marked with orange diamond signs. To the fire look out, it will be an 8 mile hike. TROUT CREEK TRAIL

Listen to Trout Creek babble, birds sing and enjoy this trail’s secluded feel. This paved trail continues up to Tahoe Donner / Northwoods Blvd.

ACCESS: Heading towards the west end of Donner Lake, go past South Shore Drive and up Old Hwy 40. Make a left 400 feet past the winter closure gate into the parking area. This historic area boasts non-motorized trails that travel to adjacent USFS and State Park lands along old trade routes, through stands of Aspen, and along clear creeks, ponds and beaver habitat. to Donner Summit, Old California Highway 40 curves gracefully alongside historic Donner Lake. It goes past the public piers where families gather for picnics, trout fishermen try their luck, or couples enjoy romantic sunsets—all while Donner Lake faithfully reflects the mountains and ever-changing Truckee sky. Then, slowly but surely, the grade on Old Highway 40 grows steeper and steeper going softly left then right then left again. With every turnout, take in that epic view. Finally over historic Rainbow Bridge, feel the influence of granite boulders and 1000-year-old Sierra Junipers. Until 1962, when Interstate 80 opened, 7,000 cars used to travel Highway 40. Now, drivers fly by on I-80 missing out on the scenery and history found along this curving backroad. Only a fraction pass through today. But those who do get to experience how mindfulness and travel go hand in hand—how slowing down allows you to be in the moment and truly experience sights, sounds, and smells. Being surrounded by awe-inspiring nature can do wonders for our wellbeing and is the best antidote to life’s fast pace. SIGHTS The 20-Mile Museum is a series of 47 interpretive signs along Old Highway 40. The markers highlight history, display historical photographs and quotes, tell good stories, and lists activities for that location. Don’t miss the petroglyphs that sit just below Rainbow Bridge. Marvel at over 200 delicate rock elements which change with the variations of light and shadow. The Donner Memorial Bridge (Rainbow Bridge), fully restored in 1993 stands as an architectural feat with 360 foot radius curve over the arch and a 145 foot radius over each approach span. Constructed with gravel and sand mined at Donner Lake, it’s as much a part of this landscape as are the boulders and trees. The bridge is often featured in print ads, on TV commercials, and in movies like “True Lies.” Chinese Catfish Pond, purportedly stocked by Chinese laborers who valued a healthy diet, catfish pond served as a food source. It now charms visitors. Bring some bread to attract the fish. These decedents who thrive in those waters spend up to seven months a year below ice and snow! Wait for the them to surface and say hello! Iconic snow sheds once protected trains passing along the transcontinental railway from heavy snowfall. The sheds also kept the original passengers in dark, smokey tunnels and prevented them from enjoying the most breathtaking portions of the route. To make matters worse, the trains were sometimes stuck in snow for days at time. During summers, the wooden sheds dried in the hot sun and often caught fire when train wheels threw sparks. 38

ACTIVITIES Donner Summit offers an endless range of activities for every season. SUMMER During summer, everywhere you turn you’ll find a trailhead that marks the beginning of a great hike. For road or mountain biking, Donner Summit is your playground. With approximately 50 climbing routes, Black Wall on Donner Summit is an iconic, world-class climbing area. Birdwatchers and photographers should prepare for continual delights, surprises, and inspiration. Mt. Judah Loop, named after the Theodore Judah, who was the chief engineer who determined the best route for the transcontinental train route over the Sierra, remains one of most popular trails on the Summit. The loop takes visitors to the top of Mt. Judah with a stunning view of Donner Lake. Round trip this moderately difficult 4.35 mile route takes hikers by wildflowers and magnificent vistas. Summit Valley (Van Norden Meadow), is a beautiful subalpine meadow that is host to 20 species of mammals, at least 100 species of birds, more than 500 species of plants, and

Only summer travel is possible, given average annual snowfall is 34 feet. 1919: U.S. Mail service planes cross the summit to travel the first trans-continental air route. 1928: The Lincoln Highway route is converted to U.S. Highway 40.

Its modern history includes being a brief stopover for emigrants who had successfully scaled Donner Summit. WINTER During winter, Donner Summit area is one of California’s finest recreational areas. The high snowfall in the area makes winter sports some of the best in the world. Choose from a number of winter activities: Downhill ski or ride. Glide, stride, or skate ski. Or have a back country adventure. In any case, you’re in for an epic getaway. Visit Sugar Bowl, Donner Ski Ranch, Soda Springs for downhill adventures. Look into Royal Gorge—North America’s largest cross country resort—or Auburn Ski Club for cross country fun.
