People to Know

This section focuses on the heart of the workers' compensation industry - its people! We will take the time to get to know these individuals on a personal level and explore their roles and significant contributions to the industry.

Meet Tanya Bouloy, a Risk Management Analyst for the City of Hollywood, Florida, who has been with the city for 24 years and has worked in Human Resources/Risk Management for 10 years. As a Risk Management Analyst, Tanya is responsible for the administration of the city’s claims program, which includes managing workers' compensation, general and auto liability claims, and filing claims for damages against parties who cause damage to city property. Tanya also serves on the board of PRIMA South Florida, where she works with other members to organize and host the annual PRIMA State Conference.

Tanya's favorite part of the job is working with internal and external individuals who are part of the claims team. She values her co-workers in HR/Risk, the thirdparty administrator (TPA), the defense council, her fellow PRIMA board members, and those in the South Florida risk management community who are a constant resource for her. Tanya had never heard of the field of risk management before she started working in it, but now she loves it.

When asked about the skills required for her job, Tanya says maintaining records is the most important as it's impossible to remember everything. She also emphasizes the importance of follow-up and not taking it personally when a claimant becomes irate because their claim has been denied. Tanya has learned the importance of good team members and establishing an amazing network in her career.

Tanya's typical workweek involves checking for new claims and addressing them, general and auto liability roundtable, Risk Management staff meeting, PRIMA board meeting, attending CEUs or other forms of training, facilitating information gathering between adjusters and departments, reviewing medical records, and responding to Requests to Produce from defense council. When asked about the major issues/trends in the field today, Tanya mentions minor injuries that manage to evolve into something serious and end up on the books for years, and claimants who think they know their rights but have no understanding of the applicable legislation.

Apart from her career, Tanya is a certified Open Water SCUBA diver, and during COVID, she learned to crochet via YouTube. She has a lifelong passion for photography and enjoys assembling Lego sets. Tanya takes time in the morning to say out loud things that she is grateful for and gets kisses from her sweet pup. Tanya's biggest strength is maintaining her records and her dependability. When she first meets someone, Tanya tends to look at their shoes, unless they are accompanied by a dog, then the dog gets all her attention. Tanya's most significant learning experience was learning to love herself just the way she is and setting boundaries, which is okay even with family.

Tanya tries to find a balance between her work life and home life by not checking her email often on nights or weekends. Recently, she has instituted quiet time to meditate If she were stuck on a deserted island, Tanya would take her dachshund Gabriel, a knife, and waterproof matches. Looking ahead, Tanya believes that the technology available to us will continue to evolve, and the markets will develop new kinds of coverage in the next five years.
