Introduction It’s nearly February already, time flies and it is not going to slow down especially if you are in the aviation industry. But never fear JAC is here to bring you digital related content while you are on the go. Our two initial issues have seen overwhelming response and high readership due to the originality and contributors behind the content. We pride ourselves not to be another crew social platform reposting images and or copying content that is already flooding the worldwide web. The JAC team brings you original content from our experiences, independent views from across the globe with the aim to advise and support the Air Crew community. With this issue we explore the DNA of managers in the industry, our grooming expert tackles a very sensitive grooming topic and we shed the light on an orphanage in Nairobi that we all can contribute to. We have an exclusive interview with Dubai’s female inspirational aviator and we’ve partnered up with VIP FA Recruits for an in-depth interview on the world of VVIP flying and what they look for in new potential recruits. WOMEN OF THE SKY: Exclusive one on one with an Inspirational female aviator, Captain Gabriela When did you fall in love with aviation and how did you follow your passion? At the age of 15 when I first flew a helicopter, I thought, “This is going to be a grand adventure.” A few months later, I decided to begin a PPL(H) license course, and I wanted to get a PPL(A) license as well, so I applied for both at the same time. Before long, I started flying with an instructor, and then on my own. After the first few lectures I fell in love with flying. "This is it,” I thought.

What was your experience while taking the license courses? At what age did you go on your first solo flight ? To this day, I remember every detail about my course for both private pilot licenses. I also remember the comments people around me made— there were several men also applying for the licenses. They behaved as if they were envious that a young girl found her passion, took active part in the lectures and wanted to learn as much as possible. I made the first Solo Flight on an Eurocopter EC120, I remember feeling extraordinary. Tears came to my eyes... I was 16 at the time. It was unforgettable, and it's impossible to describe how I felt at that moment. I think that everyone recalls their first Solo Flight the same way - I will definitely never forget mine.

When you chose aviation as a career, how challenging was it to land your first job? My first job came very easily, I didn't have to try very hard. I was finishing my studies at the Embry Riddle Aeronautical University, when I was approached by the manager of a company chartering helicopters and small, single engine aeroplanes. He offered me a job as a commercial pilot— to me, this was a great opportunity to become a real pilot and build my flight hours. Then I became an instructor at an aviation school in the US, not far from my university. I will never forget my first commercial flight to Miami on a Eurocopter EC135. It was like a fairy tale... I like to think of it as my second Solo Flight in life, this time for commercial flying.

Do you find it more challenging to operate in the Gulf as a female, opposed to Europe or other parts of the world? Before starting work in Dubai, many people warned me that a woman would be treated poorly there, that they wouldn't give me a job, that I should find something in Europe. All these comments reinforced my decision to see it with my own eyes. After all— no venture, no champagne. I prefer to take a risk and learn from my own experience than to regret that I didn't do something. Now, after spending some time in the Arab Emirates, I can't imagine working anywhere else in the world. I defy the stereotypes— my colleagues treat me as equal and the atmosphere is great as well! Women are trained the same, there is no leniency, they have to pass the same exams, and operational procedures are the same for everyone. Why then would I feel different? There is nothing to discourage me from working there. I think of the Emirates as my place on Earth, where I feel really good. Of course, living and working here has its advantages and disadvantages —as everything— but I would never call them 'adversities'.

You fly both fixed and rotary aircrafts as part of your career. How to do you keep current when other pilots work so hard to keep a single rating? Yes, I fly both fixed wings and rotary aircraft. Maintaining all this is a big challenge for me. But I love challenges. The fact that when I go to work it feels like a wonderful holiday trip definitely helps me to keep everything going, the more so that the list of my Type Ratings is pretty extensive, and I want to keep it intact.

What do you prefer more fixed or rotary? I can't say what I prefer, fixed wings are completely different from rotary. These are two different stories, I love each of them the same, my heart is divided in two equal parts. However, I have a soft spot for helicopters, as my flying career started with them. My first flight was on a helicopter. It's always great to take a FL50 and enjoy beautiful views all around, or fly without autopilot.

Tell us your current role and have you had the opportunity to fly with female officers in the Gulf yet? At present I work at a company chartering private jets and helicopters. I am a captain there. I feel special because I am the only woman there, the first one to be a pilot in the company's history— and I carry 4 chevrons on my shoulder. Despite the fact that the number of women in the flight industry is increasing steadily, there are not very many of them yet. Especially here, in Arabic countries. Apart from the beginning of my flying career in the US and the two professional female pilots I met there, I have had no opportunity to work with other women. I know many women who are professional pilots, but I have never flown with them. Also, at no point did I find myself in the cockpit with another woman. To be honest, when flying in the Emirates and meeting pilots from various airlines and charter companies, I have never met a woman working here.

What tip or advice would you give male flight crew when they fly with female pilots? Gentlemen, please be less stiff, women don't bite, this includes those who fly. There is no need to be so tense. Please don't throw tantrums and don't express your dissatisfaction for flying with a female captain. Fight for your dreams and you will get to where she is as well. Pilots should treat female pilots as equal, not as enemies. Otherwise work becomes difficult and unpleasant. I always try to loosen the atmosphere when I see that a man is stressed or embarrassed to fly with a woman. Small talk is definitely better than sitting at attention all the time.

What is life like working as an aviator? There was a time when after work I went to the airport, took an aircraft with my friends on board and we flew somewhere. Now I have less and less time for that, I have other priorities which require a lot of time and attention. My schedule is very tight, I don't have time for private life, I must tie it all together. There is also family and friends, I must find time for them too. With friends it's not a problem because they all fly, so we can combine business with pleasure. Remember: if you really want something, go for it— you will achieve it. However, I don't have much time to fly small aircrafts… there comes a time in life that your enthusiasm for flying vanes, and you have to take care of other things in life, but flying will never become boring routine for me. I will never allow that!

When you get a chance to rest, what do you prefer to do? I try to make the most of my free time. I have very little of it so I don't waste it on sleeping or lying in bed all day. I spend it actively, I go running, I take long walks and I meet with my friends. Usually our conversations end up being about aviation, but after all, this is how I like it. Sometimes I go flying and discover something new, outside my everyday routine.

Favourite holiday destination? I have no single favourite holiday spot. Two of them are definitely Bali and the Seychelles. If I go skiing - it's Courchevel or the Swiss St. Moritz

Favorite city....? Definitely Dubai, even when I wasn't living here I went there often to spend my holidays. Also, my beloved Warsaw, but only in Summer when you don't have to endure the freezing -20 degrees Celsius.

Any Inspirational tip to women in aviation.? Every woman will find something inspiring. Everyone is different. For me, every flight is an inspiration. I would recommend that everyone draws inspiration from everything that you like about your work. Make your dreams come true and fight for them. It's not always easy, but remember that after every storm the Sun will eventually come out.

Over 24 years managing cabin crew in four different continents and over seven carriers, I developed a sense of affinity with my team. I felt the common bond sharing the same passion. Now the question, what is the Cabin Crew Manager’s DNA? 12


W

hat produces the proper synchronicity, well I have lots to say about it: A leader has to inspire and build confidence. Part of their job is to point to a vision, which is a horizon of exciting possibility. A leader's mindset has to be positive, very positive. Airlines need to be buoyed up and aiming high. Team members need to be thrilled by their work and pumped to do it. Eyesore (Pessimistic) is not the best model for a leader. Who wants to follow a morose and gloomy donkey? Leaders cannot be cynical or flat. I have an enthusiastic personality and an energetic style. Both are particularly useful for a leader when doing some of the basic work of leading: Recruiting, Selling, Brainstorming, Innovating, Mentoring and Celebrating Inflight performance. There are times, however, when leaders need to be excruciatingly realistic. This happens particularly in times of crisis. They have to live in the unvarnished moment and call the shots exactly as they are.

There is little value to wearing rose-colored glasses when the chips are down and decisions offer bad or worse alternatives. A Leader must be close to the ground, the act of presence in briefings and flights are vital to shoe appropriate support. Leaders need to understand and adjust. When the power of the positive works, have at it. When the tough threats emerge, avoid the pixie dust. The trick is to be flexible and very smart and self-aware about the signals you send. Leading people is no picnic. They make mistakes, get crabby, and have complex lives. At the same time, they have unlimited energy when they care about something. They want to understand what's going on. They relish their skills. A leader has to lead people, whether they are  Likeable or not  Prone to dumb comments or brilliant analysts  Perky or sluggish  And so on.

I remember Tess our receptionist in the office about 5 years ago. She had a scratchy personality, to say the least, and seemed ill fitted to the job. When summer rolled around, however, we began to get floods of team members from other bases, coming to fly overseas. Tess was suddenly a different person, organizing schedules, updating manuals, assisting with paperwork, and orchestrating jam-packed days. No one could have managed the chaos better. Leaders have tens, hundreds, and possibly thousands of Tess’s in their midst. The job is to uncover the best and when the best is not there to remember it is a possibility. People are people and not widgets coming down the assembly line or number on a graph. I never really think about it as mentoring. That word conveys exulted images of Merlin and Arthur sifting through careful lessons about life, speaking wise words, and baring the soul. Huge goals are at stake. My own story about being a mentor has always been much more haphazard, spontaneous, and improvisational. And, here's the deep truth about it that I need to reveal: I have also been in it for me, not the protégé. It's simple. I get a huge kick out of the younger people in an airYounger team members also have line. Think about it. The protégé is a watcher. It's his/her job to figure out the angles, the possibilities, and the politics. The newer team members see what they see and then they combine those observations with their compadres (buddies) over drinks. They are a free cultural survey-consulting house. They know truths that no one in my position can see. They are hungry, as well. They want to figure things out. So their questions make me think harder. I have to avoid platitudes. They will scoff if I don't. Of course, they won't scoff to my face, but they won't come back for more. It's easy to see if and when I'm offering value.

The best a mentor can do in return is the following: 1) Be enthusiastic about them; there is nothing like the boost from a respected person who says You Are Great. Let your heart show a bit. . 2) Give context. Don't tell war stories -- explain them. Everyone wants to tell stories but adjust the ego-to-value ratio by sharing the surround sound, too. 3) Be honest. A protégé needs to know things. Tell it. Say it. 4) Be demanding. A protégé wants a challenge, wants to know whether the road ahead is about the Grail or just the road to the mall. Recently, I spoke for an hour or so with an emerging young leader. I followed those rules and wasn't sure but that I had been a little too blunt and almost callous about how tough things can be. His subsequent thank-you note reassured me again that they want to hear the real deal. It warmed my heart: “I found that your grounded viewpoint on both the entrenched culture and challenges in the Middle East really provided me with better perspective on some of the tough challenges that I have faced at work”. It gave me the reassurance that airlines can and will change, that no problem is insurmountable - and ideas on how to be more resilient in the meantime. And your thoughts on leadership (and how transformative leadership really can inspire folks) are something I will take with me far into the future.

They are not threatened by others performance, they in fact grow taller along side of it

As I said, I'm in it for my passion and me. Every so often you come across a leader who almost captivates you. Amidst a sea of other leaders, they just simply draw your attention in an almost magnetic way. They are different, and you know it in a second… You feel better in their presence… safer somehow, even if you have never met them before. They elevate anyone else in their broadcast range. They lead. Not as a job, but as an example. Not to draw praise to themselves, but to recognize others. When they walk into a room their entrance doesn’t shout, “here I am!” but instead “there you are”… and delivers for everyone around them. How did they become this way? Certainly not by learning how to boss other people around better than the next guy. Not by being bitchy and making other’s performances seem smaller… and definitely not by having the most money and toys in a narcissistic “better than you” way… They did it by doing some pretty hard work.

1. They’ve accepted themselves. Getting to a place in your life where you forgive your mistakes, are humble but proud of your accomplishments, are a willing student of others, aware of your own values and trust in your intentions gives you the ability to just be yourself. You no longer worry if you will say or do the wrong thing, because you work with the truth and this allows you to feel at ease. 2. They educate themselves. You can’t “take responsibility” for things unless you have an awareness of your involvement or lack of one. To “hold yourself accountable” without educating yourself is almost a martyr-like way of pretending you are being a leader. Making it your responsibility first to continue to seek out education so that you are equipped to be involved in the handling of tasks/ challenges gives you some credibility when you “take responsibility” for successes or failures. 3. They make decisions quickly. Losing time is painful for everyone. Delaying progress due to indecision is like holding people captive. Trusting that all of the information you have is enough to execute and decide, along with quickly checking your resources allows for progress to be continuous. Even if the decision needs to be corrected or changed in the future - getting to that new platform of knowledge would never have happened without the decisiveness to drive action in the first place. 4. They encourage. And they mean it. They recognize and give out genuine praise to others every chance they can. they do it with the intention of having the recognition “land” on the individual deserving of it - not to demonstrate how supportive they are in a self serving way. They are not threatened by others performance, they in fact grow taller along side of it.

5. They question and instigate innovation. Their belief in your ability to improve your performance is incessant. They see your potential as the truth and inspire you to have the courage to experiment, create and have confidence in yourself. Assisting others to find their own unique ability to deliver strengthens their teams - encouraging brilliance elevates every player. 6. They keep the conversation alive. Equally important to the “how” in every task is the “why”, for them and for everyone else. And this conversation goes both ways. They have an equal desire to ensure everyone on their team understands the “why’s” behind their direction, as well as they want to understand the “why’s” that their team feels when making suggestions for improvements or defining challenges along the way. The truth of everything is allowed to simply be so that performance can exist. Where integrity shines as the playbook, all of the “strategy” falls away. People can simply connect and feel at ease, and if they want to stay part of this team, they too must bring their best every day. People want to be a part of a team like that. Our role in JAC was to create a closer, caring aviation community, where we can share information, lifestyles, tips and advise. But why not use this platform to also bring awareness, help and better lives. Viktoryia Krupich has been a flight attendant for over 4 years and wants the crew to join in and help the Maendeleo Learning Centre where possible and we are proud to support her. 20

iving in a world of technology, rapidly evolving and changing. Every day, we are dealing with an increasing number of electronic devices in many different areas of our lives. And every day, plunging into the bustle of life, we are surprised to the new changes in the world around us through these tools and devices designed to make our busy lives easier. But, have we ever stopped and wondered about the facts, that in addition to this evolving digital world and gadgets, heroes also surround us. People who give themselves for the good of others. Several of these people can be seen in one of the many orphanages in Nairobi, devoting their time on voluntary basis one of extraordinary residents of this extraordinary country. This is a brief story on a Hero by the name of Beatrice Imbuga, the equivalent of Mother Theresa, who has been looking after 200 plus children at her own self made Centre, the Maendeleo Learning Centre in Nairobi for almost 14 years. The thought comes into our minds, that she could have built private homes on her land and lived very comfortably from the returns but she has chosen to utilize the land to a worthwhile cause and to the detriment of her own personal gain.

Spending time with children from the orphanage, it is impossible not to notice the spark in their eyes, and it's not about materialistic gifts... There is this feeling and vibe you get, as to say, “someone cares about us, that someone is thinking of us” this is the invisible force that is able to melt any heart. Of course, such difficult situations are faced everywhere around the world, but why don’t you take few hours from your African Safari Layover and make a change.

Happiness is only real when it’ s shared

Going on a flight, it's so easy to pack our smiles and kindness in to a suitcase and instead of the usual safari try to make someone's life a little bit better. Being a sky world ambassadors, whether flight or cabin crew, each one of us has this precious opportunity to travel the world and to see its beauty and most importantly make a change for the better. The Orphanage... is located in a 30-minute drive from the center of Nairobi and school teachers are willing to meet guests and assist on how to get to the orphanage. Playing together, positive examples and hope for a better future - for some people this seems so small, but for others it means everything in the world.

Many first time parents have little idea of what child friendly amenities are available on board their flight; firstly because it is a totally different experience flying with children than by yourself (and let's face it BC, before children, most adults choose to sit as far away from the bassinet seats as possible and pay little attention to what is handed out to parents, and more attention to the inflight movie selection and pondering over the wine list); secondly because the amenities vary so much from airline to airline. 24

No facilities are fine if you are flying on a budget airline or short haul, but in this competitive age, a few more family friendly amenities do contribute towards a less stressful flight for parents… especially when other major airlines offer more spacious changing tables, baby amenity packs, toys, games, movies and sky nannies. But what amenities are really valued by parents, and which are unnecessary- perhaps an item the airline can cut back on and instead use the funds for something else to gain the family vote?

Great amenities Large bassinet – a huge thumbs up to British Airways with their two varying styles of bassinets, the larger suitable for up to 2 years old, and to Qantas and Virgin for having restraints on their bassinets meaning parents do not have to remove their baby during any turbulence. It would be great to

see bassinets on all flights over 2 hours. Changing tables – an obvious essential but some older aircraft don't have them and this is the reason why some parents are unaware they exist on other airlines and use their seat to change baby instead. Milk and baby food (served with a teaspoon, not a tea or coffee stirrer, thanks.) Both can calm a possible infant meltdown if a parent had forgotten something, or has been delayed and are running low on supplies. I love how Singapore Airlines provides on request, post weaning meals ( PWMLM) suitable for that 1-2 age gap and also child meal for infant (CHMLI) which are a little more substantial than the PWMLM and have lighter sauces than the CHML. SQ are the only airline I’m aware of that provides this.

Whole fruit – just a banana or apple handed out to kids, makes a nice healthy snack and much better than having them wired up on sugar for a 14 hour flight. Small bottles of water – with young kids, anything without a lid is just asking for trouble and likely a press of the call bell to provide more napkins or a spare blanket. Baby wipes – Always great to have and they have so many uses!

Colouring books, puzzles, games etc – these are always a welcome sight for older kids. Child headsets – a great concept as kids get pretty irritated with the adult ones when they don't fit. The rucksack bag – where you can throw lots of extra bits in at the end of the flight- as it’s always so much harder repacking at top of descent for some reason!

Nappies – just in case of an 'emergency'- but most parents would have packed a good supply of these.

The not so great... Soft toys – these are hardly looked at or played with. A much better alternative would be an age appropriate book or little figurines like the Happy Land people from Early Learning Centre or a vehicle such as a toy airplane . I.e. something that can engage a child in some imaginative play.

The extra nice touches Strollers – Complimentary strollers on arrival are becoming more and more commonplace, with Emirates, Qatar and Etihad leading the way. Airports are also following suit. Sky nannies – need I say more! Genius idea from Gulf Air and Etihad, but discussions from other parents suggest, although this is a great concept, it's just not practical due to the sheer volume of families flying. Nonetheless, extra checks on families throughout the flight to see if they need anything such as water or a snack are appreciated. Often parents have a sleeping child on them and daren't move and can't access the call bell. However, even if your airline offers none or just a few of the above, parents value the crew above everything. A helpful hand, a friendly smile goes a long way and can make a huge difference. Some parents who fly solo with kids are often worried about popping to the loo and leaving their child unattended. Offering to hold a baby ( if your airline permits this) is welcomed. As is taking a niggley baby for a walk around the aircraft. A flight attendant working for an Southwest has just had a pax thank you letter to her, go viral on Facebookfb viral letter- all for taking the baby off her hands for a few minutes. Don't underestimate the gratitude! Parents don't expect this to be part of crew responsibilities but it really is a nice touch. Along similar lines, parents are often embarrassed when their child is crying and do everything they can to pacify it and avoid disturbing other pax. So when they come to galley, it's often in a little bit of desperation. I know it's frustrating when those curtains open, you've been up half the night, and you've just sat down on a container to eat your meal, but if you can offer some sanctuary in the galley it is always appreciated- and if allowed, a space to temporarily sit on a jump seat. Kids are so heavy, even 6 month old ones can feel like a ton after holding for a few minutes. And rest assured the parents will not only be grateful, but slightly envious, that soon you get to sleep with no small people as your early wake up call. Enjoy that BC rest time.

How did you get into recruiting FA for VIP aircraft owners? We both have 17 years of flying experience most of which we have spent in private/corporate flying. Melina: I used to be the Lead FA for a prominent Egyptian business man. Over the 8 years I spent with him, I was required to recruit and train many of his FAs onboard his G650, Global and Challenger aircrafts. Emma: I spent 8 years in Saudi Arabia working as the lead FA for KHC (HRH ALWALEED BIN TALAL), where I recruited and trained over 20+ FAs including the first Saudi FAs onboard his A340, B747 and Hawker aircrafts. So it seemed like a natural progression for both of us to transition from flying full-time into training/recruiting VIP FAs.

When did VIP FA Recruit start, and how many FA's have you placed in jobs since then? We launched the company 2 years ago, registering it in the UK we launched officially at EBACE Air show in Switzerland, Geneva, 19-21 May. M: Just before we attended the show we were approached by Altitudes Magazine, who interviewed us for a feature in their EBACE 2015 edition. E: This exposure helped catapult our company into the market and we have really gained momentum since then, receiving lots of positive feedback.

Why do your clients source staff through VIP Aircraft Recruit instead of on their own? M: VIP clients, corporate operators and private pilots come to us for a variety of reasons. We have built up a good reputation over the years within the private/corporate sector. What do you look for when recruiting a flight attendant? M: All FAs, whether they fly commercial or corporate, are required to maintain a healthy weight to height ratio. In commercial flying it is a requirement that a FA must be able to swim unaided for at least 25m. So maintaining a healthy lifestyle is a must.

What should candidates look for when transitioning to VIP/Private? Do they need an aviation background? M: The majority of FAs we recruit have a background in commercial flying for a minimum of 3+ years working in the premium cabins. Although we have recruited ladies with no flying experience in the past for a private owner, this is a rare occurrence. We encourage aspiring flight attendants to gain as much experience as they can in commercial, this will set them in good stead before making the transition to corporate. E: We encourage corporate FAs to build upon their experience too. There are many culinary courses readily available in major cities offering tuition in the latest food trends, food preparation & plating techniques. On Air Dining, for example, offers a free culinary training course for flight attendants. We offer a two day ground training course focusing on training commercial girls how to transition into corporate flying. Our course teaches and prepares them to successfully learn all the tools they need to know to be a successful corporate FA in this highly demanding market.

E: Many of the very small jets have height restrictions which we take into account when recruiting, as this restricts the FAs we can recommend for certain jobs. A question we get asked a lot is does it come down to ‘looks?’ I would say that being attractive is certainly an advantage in every profession but that this alone will not secure you a position onboard a private aircraft. You must have an array of other skills to succeed in this job. Two of the most important characteristics are temperament and attitude. Things can, and often do, change or come up at the last minute. Being able to think on your feet, improvise, adapt and stay cool in sometimes stressful situations is a valuable commodity every FA should possess. M: This is one of the reasons why, for certain types of FA vacancies, we will pursue/headhunt the right candidate even if she is already in full-time employment. We reach out to highly recommended FAs through our vast network of contacts in the industry, through personal recommendations and via social media such as LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter. We provide those candidates with a full brief and job spec. and at the end of the day, it’s entirely up to the individual FA if he/she wants to be included in our selection process or not.


Is private aviation easier or more demanding than commercial? E: I personally flew for Qatar Airways for 5 years before transitioning into private full-time. I thoroughly enjoyed my time in commercial and I felt the training I received there has been invaluable to the rest of my flying career. Although the down side of commercial is that you often fly multiple sectors a day, have short layovers and often with a new set of crew each flight. In private, the flying is a much more personal experience— you fly with the same crew, often same VIPs and entourage. The atmosphere is very different on-board— and having flown myself, for the same family for years, you develop a bond with them that cannot compare to any other flying experience. M: To work onboard a private jet you also must possess an array of different skills. It can be a job which requires you to ‘wear a lot of hats.’ For example: You must be able to prepare and present food to the same quality and standards you would expect from a Chef of a 5 star restaurant, as well as able to serve it impeccably. How challenging are solo VIP operations versus with multiple crew?

What are red flags and potential pitfalls to be aware of in advertised jobs?

M: We both have had experiences working onboard a private jet solo and on larger VIP jets with multiple crew. I don’t personally think either is harder. Although later on in my career, I flew solo more often than not. I found it more of a challenge flying solo, as you are overall responsible for maintaining, cleaning, stocking the aircraft, sourcing and ordering the catering. The upside of this is you can add your own personal flair to each and every thing that you do on the jet.

M: As we all know, there are many scams out there on the internet. If you are an aspiring corporate FA, we would suggest you do your homework when it comes to contacting recruiters or operators. Ask other corporate flight attendants about the recruiter/operator to see if they have heard of them. If you don’t know any, reach out to some experienced corporate FAs through social media, for example, LinkedIn. Get their advice on which recruiters they have used in the past and which operators they would recommend.

E: Many younger, less experienced corporate FAs prefer to work on wide bodied VIP aircraft with multiple crew. That way, they can learn a great deal more from the senior crew, who can mentor them and teach them additional skills. Plus, they have built-in travel companions to enjoy time off with down route!

If it is too good to be true, more often than not, it wi ll be a SCAM...

E: Most recruiter/operators will have company emails/websites etc. Be very weary of the ones who don’t. Never give out your personal information without checking this. We recently heard of a scam via LinkedIn, where a person posing as a pilot for a wealthy businessman asked FAs for inappropriate casual photographs in bikinis etc. A reputable company would never request such photographs! He also asked for FA Skype details to arrange interviews. This can often be the case for operators but in this particular scam, the person will not show his face and quotes ridiculously high salaries amongst other things. If it is too good to be true, more often than not, it will be a SCAM... so please be careful!


How does VIP flying differ in the Gulf compared to the rest of the world, and do you think the standards are higher? M: I do think the standards and expectations are extremely high in the MENA region but I wouldn’t necessarily say they are higher than the rest of the world. The customs and protocol definitely differ from country to country but once you have reached the level of flying with royalty, diplomats and other VIPs, service standards MUST be impeccable at all times regardless of your particular location. E: Melina and I both flew for HRH ALWaled Bin Talal, owner of the George V in Paris. Our principal passengers expect a certain level of service and luxury on par with a 5 star hotel such as The Four Seasons. They pay very well for the privilege of flying privately and as such expect to be treated and served onboard to the highest of standards which they are accustomed to.

What real advice would you give interested people who want to be crew? E: In general, FAs who want to make the transition into corporate will have had commercial experience working for an airline in the premium cabins (First & Business class). So, gain some commercial before applying for a corporate job. Commercial airlines put their crew through rigorous SEP, first aid and service training, all of which is invaluable and will benefit you when making the transition into corporate. M: When you do apply for a corporate flying

1. Ensure your CV has no spelling mistakes, is up-to-date, and has the correct contact details including a Skype contact— many smaller operators will conduct initial interviews via Skype. 2. Ensure your Height & Weight are mentioned. This is very important should you be working solo on a smaller jets which have height restrictions. 3. Ensure you have clear pictures to accompany your CV, one portrait and one full length in business attire. We always suggest to our FAs that they have professional photographs taken and that they are no older than 12 months. Many ladies make the mistake of sending photographs which are not clear, not in a professional setting or ones that are more than 12 months old. E: Please remember that you will only get one chance to make a good first impression!

TABOO FASHION FAUX PAS: The Frontal Wedgie

I

t is no coincidence that “Oh no!” rhymes with Camel Toe, the slang term for the dreaded frontal wedgie. It truly is one of the most taboo fashion faux pas that makes everyone uncomfortable in noticing, and addressing it. Unfortunately (or fortunately), as cabin crew, such glaringly obvious grooming no no's need to be addressed and fixed, pronto! Many a time, I have looked at a colleague and thought they must not have a mirror at home because clearly, they would not have walked out of the door looking like they do. Or do they have a magic mirror, a bit like Simon Cowell, where it tells you "you are looking fabulous darling" and then sniggers when you walk out the door with a swagger? Let’s get down to business, as magic mirrors aren't doing anyone any favours —and as they say, 'truth hurts’ —but honesty, especially in this case, is the best policy. So why does it happen, and how can it be resolved?

Don’t become a victim of animal foot prints, check yourself in the mirror Why it happens: The main cause is improper fit. It happens when pants are too tight or too thin in the crotch region, causing visible transparency in that area. The effect is heightened when wearing light coloured trousers, tightly fitting bottoms, i.e. yoga leggings and shorts. Cabin crew, as you bloat during the flight you may find that as your trousers get tighter, the danger of improper fit increases.

How to fix it: Never go commando when wearing thin, stretchy or poorly fitted trousers. I would recommend wearing thicker seamless underwear, which are more likely to allow you to maintain a smooth appearance.

Fit and fabric play a huge part— however if it's uniform, the fabric is out of your hands, same as the colour. Nonetheless, the fit is within your control. A relaxed waistband will allow for more movement along your midsection, which helps to maintain more flexibility in that area. It is better if trousers are lined in the upper area too, as this adds an extra layer of protection. If all else fails there are quick fixes— a cheap and easy way is to use a panty liner. Instead of placing it in the usual spot, turn it on its side, fold it in half and make sure it sits across the anatomy in question, a bit like a band- aid. Or if you prefer to you can purchase (unbelievably!) Camel Ammo… and wait for it… Camelflage. Brilliant ! :)

Addressing the issue: The easiest way is to draw attention to the fit of the trousers and politely and discreetly mention that the trousers may need to be looser in the waist so the lower region isn't so taut. Alternately, if you can’t find the courage to speak up, you find some images ( Google it, trust me there are loads of celebs that have made the faux pas— think Kardashians) and make a point of saying "How on earth do they not realise they have a situation?" Then hope for the best, bearing in mind though that a "muffin top" or a "VPL" might be the next grooming issue you may have to deal with. Oh the joys!! Good luck, or good look? Gayle

EXERCISE TIPS TO KEEP YOU ACTIVE AND MOBILE AT 35000 FT

"W

hat are you doing?” Is often the question I get while I have a few spare minutes on board when on duty. Most crew are definitely not used to or haven’t made the habit of exercising while being up at 35,000ft. I can understand that, we get really caught up with our fast paced work and sometimes don’t seem to have enough time to sit and eat for that matter. Nevertheless there are (often) times where you can take a few minutes to focus on proper mobility and strength movements while you’re working. In this feature you’ll see examples of what type of onboard exercises you can do onboard to target different parts of your body. Even though they may seem obvious, to some people they aren’t and could potentially help alleviate certain pain.

Here’s a look at what you could do:

Get your arms working by doing some pushups against the galley counter top! This is actually a really easy variation because you’re at a high angle between the hands and floor. Do 3 sets of 20 push-ups each. Once you’re done with the first 20, take a minute break and continue on to the next 20.

Another good one for the arms are triceps dips. It’s possible to do them by placing your hands on the edge of the jump seat, legs extended and keeping your body as close to the seat while bending your elbows to lower your body. If this one is a little too difficult for you, you can modify this exercise by bending your knees and placing your feet flat on the floor to take off a little weight from your arms. Again, try going for 3 sets of 20 repetitions (or between 10-15 if needed).

3 One of my personal preferred exercises to target the lower body are the good old lunges. These can literally by done anywhere because for the most basic variation, you do not need any props! An important point when doing lunges is that you have to make sure that your forward knee does not bend pass the toes. Start with 15 repetitions on each leg to complete 1 set. Aim for 3 sets total.

Please note that these exercises are not meant to be difficult and they’re not meant to change the look of your body overnight. They’re meant to create movement in the body, stimulate your mind, and increase blood flow to muscles and organs. By keeping yourself active and doing exercises, your body will increase its ability to deliver oxygen, nutrients and also to get rid of carbon dioxide for tissues to perform. You don’t have to do intricate exercises, just keep yourself active! And most importantly as you already know, keep yourself properly hydrated at all times.

Paleo Cauliflower Rice Happy New Year to you all! I'm super excited about the year ahead and all the fun, opportunities and adventures that lay in store. It's going to be a good one! Now let's kick this year off right by eating well. Eating clean and healthy isn't devoid of flavour, don't believe the haters. Oh, and you're worried you can't cut your carbs? There are always alternatives, like my cauliflower rice. 60


PIt is a good idea to prep all ingredients first as the cooking process is pretty quick.
 break your cauliflower into florets and whizz in the food processor, breaking it down into rice-like pieces.

INGREDIENTS

 Set aside, then put your shredder attachment onto the food processor and shred your carrots (you can grate them too, but this is way quicker). Grate your ginger, slice your capsicum and spring onions, and finely dice your chilies.  Chop up your chicken in small cubes and chop prawns into thirds. Now you’re set to cook.
Heat some coconut oil in a large pan or wok and fry your chicken.  When chicken is almost done, chuck in your prawns. Remove from pan and set aside when all cooked through.
 Heat a little more oil in pan and chuck in onions, frying for a minute or so, then add carrot, capsicum, ginger and chili.  Fry off till capsicum softens. Add cauliflower, stirring altogether and cooking through.
Add your honey, soy and molasses. Salt to taste.
  Put chicken and prawns back in and heat through. Squeeze in juice of 1lime and a handful of fresh coriander.
  Plate up and top with an egg fried in coconut oil. Enjoy.
