I met a Juniata Alum
in the Most Unusual Place...
“We were on a Danube River cruise when we spotted Veasey Cullen ’67 in the buffet line. It was fun catching up on our lives since our Juniata days.”

“This past March, I was at Disney World in Florida with my family. As we passed through the gates into Hollywood Studios, I heard someone calling my name. Unsure of who it was, I ignored it at first, but eventually, I turned around to see Zachary Ausherman ’06 standing behind me! Our families were heading to the same ride, so outside of Toy Story Mania, we snapped a quick selfie.” —Melissa Wilson ’06

Diana (Goodley) Cutrona ’01, Leigh Ann (Suhrie) Wilson ’02, and Matthew Wilson ’04 have maintained a close friendship for 20 years. “We independently planned our summer vacations, and when sharing locations, we realized we were going to be at Yosemite National Park at the same time. We didn’t set any specific plans other than a goal to meet up. We tried to find each other at Glacier Point, but missed each other by an hour. We then set plans to meet for lunch the next day. The July 4 holiday crowds and no parking, again, caused us to miss each other. With terrible cell service in the park, we had a few minutes to set the next attempt. We were cut off before it was finalized. As we were leaving the park, we came around a curve and Leigh Ann yelled, “Is that Diana?!” She was standing in a parking lot hoping we would see her. We were able to park and spend an hour in a very beautiful setting.”

“I had been living at Riddle Village, a Continuing Care
Community in Media, Pa., since 2010. One day in 2016, I noticed a brand-new resident getting her mail. She pulled out a large glossy magazine and I heard her say, ‘Oh, my college alumni magazine has arrived.’ I asked her what college she went to and she answered, ‘You might not have heard of it… I went to Juniata.’ Of course, I exclaimed, ‘Juniata? I went to Juniata!’ So, with laughter and hugs, we introduced ourselves: Janet Hess ’65 and Allegra (Forney) Sanner ’55. Since that first encounter, we have become good friends.”
While getting to know her new coworkers after starting a job as instructional assistant at Salford Hills Elementary School in Souderton, Pa., Carol (Stubbs) Mikesic ’85 was asked where she attended college. She then learned that Linda (Hoover) Moyer ’72, the school counselor, also attended Juniata. “We reminisced about Mountain Day, Raft Regatta, and all of the professors that we had both taken classes with.”

“My husband Walter Dziuk ’68 and I were attending a United Methodist Church training session. During a break I overheard a conversation that included the word ‘Juniata.’ After interrupting, I discovered that we had been sitting next to Cynthia (Harner) Karr ’76.” —Susan (Detar) Dziuk ’69
“I was attending the first annual Social Emotional Learning Exchange in Chicago, Ill. in Oct. 2019, when I noticed my freshman CWS lab instructor, Blake Colaianne ’11, sitting a few tables away! It turned out that we were both presenting a research poster. We had a great time at the poster session and enjoyed catching up and meeting each other’s colleagues. I’m in graduate school at the University of Nevada, Reno and Blake is in graduate school at Penn State, so it was cool that we ran into each other in Chicago!” —Sarah Trescher ’13

Gary L. Baker ’79 and Judith Benz, associate professor of German at Juniata, both attended the Notre Dame Berlin Seminar in the summer of 2019.

Tracy (Stough) Grajewski ’86 ran into John Winterstein ’56, Barry Drexler ’56, Don Pheasant ’56, and William Haushalter ’56 at a football game at Franklin and Marshall College, Pa. “These are super guys and are really dedicated to JC football!” “While working as the sports director
for WHSV-TV in Harrisonburg, Va., I was shooting a story about the Bridgewater College women’s volleyball team, coached by Erin (Albert) Harris ’09, and their successful season. So, I not only ran into her, but I also interviewed her for the story.” —Thomas Eck ’12

Changemakers not only identify problems, but work to find solutions which make the world a better place. Isabella “Izzy” Bennett ’20 is a changemaker. She recognized the ways her hometown, Baltimore City, Md., was failing its residents. Determined to act, Izzy became involved in politics, attending protests and supporting the campaign of a city councilman with whom she continues to work. At Juniata, she established her Program of Emphasis (POE) as politics with nonprofit organization and became a leader in several student political organizations. Scholarships enabled Izzy to spend a year abroad in Cork, Ireland, where she learned, “how the education systems differed, the political systems and climates changed, and the clear impact that having more than two viable parties played on political governments and voter choice.” Izzy’s career goal is to carry her spirit of change into the world with a career, “centered around making the world better for those who live in it and empowering them to continue that legacy for others to come.”
