Obituaries Elizabeth (McCartney) Kuehnoel ’27

August 10, 2010—Elizabeth married Harry Ivin and had two daughters. She was then married to Frank Kuehnoel for 20 years and they took many trips to Mexico and Alaska. She enjoyed growing beautiful roses and attending both Hope Lutheran Church and Lynden Community Church. She is survived by two children, three grandchildren, and five great grandchildren. Before her death, she was Juniata’s oldest alum at 105 years old. Sarah (Hobbs) Brown ’34

September 3, 2009—Sarah attended Our Savior’s Community Church in Palm Springs, Calif. She is survived by two children, three grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by husband Alexander. Dorothy (Endres) Whittaker ’34

August 25, 2010—Dorothy married Donald Whittaker on June 9, 1938. She taught school in the one-room Aughwick School and later served as the supervisor of elementary music education in the Huntingdon Area School District. She was a member of the Huntingdon Presbyterian Church, where she was a deacon, junior and senior choir director, and the church organist for many years. She was also an avid bridge player and a member of several bridge clubs. Dorothy is survived by daughter Margaret (Whittaker) Esh ’62, a son, six grandchildren, including Kimberly J. Russell ’89 and Elizabeth D. Smith ’86, and 12 great grandchildren. She is also the aunt of Richard J. Endres ’70. She was preceded in death by her husband and brother Richard J. Endres ’38. Juniata

September 13, 2010—Pauline married LeRoy S. Maxwell ’36 on Dec. 28, 1939. She returned to Juniata as president of its WaynesboroHagerstown Alumni Association and as president of the Waynesboro Women’s Juniata League. She was awarded Juniata’s Alumni Service Award in 1987. She was a member of Waynesboro Church of the Brethren and sang in their choir from 1935 to 2002. She had a lifelong love of painting and participated in various art shows and clothesline festivals. March 24, 2010—Harold earned a second bachelor’s degree in 1940 in agricultural economics and rural sociology. In 1941, he earned his master’s degree from Virginia Polytechnic Institute. He started his doctoral studies at Cornell University but was interrupted by World War II when he enlisted in the Army Air Corps. He married Rhea Valleau on Oct. 20, 1945. Harold finished his studies at Cornell University and went on to teach at the University of Akron in 1947. He later served at Purdue University, Mount Union College, and finally Northern Illinois University, where he served as the chair of the sociology department from 1957 until his retirement in 1984. While at the Northern Illinois University, he was awarded three Fulbright Visiting Professorships, two to Thailand and the one to the Philippines. His book, Historical and Cultural Dictionary of Thailand, was published in 1977. He enjoyed traveling in the United States, and abroad with his wife. He was also a member of the First Congregational Church in DeKalb, Ill. Harold is survived by his wife, three children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Verna (Baker) Smith ’36

September 20, 2010—Verna married Marion Smith on April 17, 1937. Prior to Marion’s death in 2008, the couple had celebrated 70 years of marriage. She taught elementary school in Huston Township, Pa. She also assisted her husband with daily operations on the dairy farm on Piney Creek, near Martinsburg, Pa. for nearly 40 years. She was a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church and Smithfield Church of the Brethren, both of Martinsburg, Pa. She was a member of Martinsburg Golden Age Club, North Woodbury Grange and the Pennsylvania Farmers Association. She enjoyed quilting, gardening and preserving foods. Verna is survived by five children, Calvin C. Smith ’66, Miriam (Smith) Honsaker ’75, Ronald, Dennis, and Janet, 14 grandchildren, and 18 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her siblings including Ellis W. Baker ’38, Margaret (Baker) Cuppett ’32, and Dorothy (Baker) Hartzler ’31. Horace L. Etienne ’37

April 16, 2010—Horace married Ruth Watson May 12, 1940. He served in the U.S. Navy as a Seabee in the South Pacific during World War II and during the Korean War. He worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad in the Juniata Machine Shop. He was a barber for 52 years,

cutting at local hospitals, nursing and private homes. He was a member of First Lutheran Church and was the president of the Ushers League and member of the church council. He was a member of many Masonic affiliations, and a life member of Hiram Lodge 616. He also was president and director of the AAA Blair County Motor Club. Horace is survived by his wife, a daughter, four grandchildren, four greatgrandchildren, and five nieces and nephews. Charlotte (Batcheler) Molyneaux ’38

March 1, 2009—Charlotte was predeceased by husband Dawson. Mary (Wentsler) Hoover Harris ’39

July 29, 2010—M.E. received her master’s degree in counselor education from the University of Pittsburgh. She then worked as a teacher at East Huntingdon High School and Chester High School in Philadelphia, Pa. while her husband completed medical school. They served as Church of the Brethren missionaries in Bulsar, India. After their return to the United States, they set up a medical practice in Windsor, Pa. and Mary served as office manager until her husband’s death in 1984. She wore many different hats as a member of the First Church of the Brethren in York, from Sunday and Bible School teacher to delegate to the annual conference. Later, she transferred her membership to the Harrisburg First Church of the Brethren. She is survived by daughters Linda L. Moyer ’72 and Carol A. Gordon ’76, brother Edmund G. Wentsler ’50, and 11 grandchildren including Sarah R. Moyer ’02. She was preceded in death by husbands, Paul S. Hoover ’37 and Robert H. Harris ’39, and her sister Amy (Wentsler) Hoover ’43. Rush E. September 10, 2010—Rush attended Harvard Law School and graduated in 1942. He served in the U.S. Navy on an escort carrier in World War II and saw action in the Pacific, Atlantic and Indian oceans. In August 1943, he married Jody Burmeister. They enjoyed traveling, playing tennis and bridge, and sailing. He practiced law in Tacoma, Wash. and retired in 2004 after 58 years of practice. He is preceded in death by his wife, sister Josephine (Stouffer) Gower ’42, cousins Ann (Wertz) MacNeish ’32, Elizabeth (Wertz) Ellis ’26, Jack E. Oller ’23, Rello E. Oller ’20, and uncle S. E. Dubbel ’11. He is survived by two daughters, three granddaughters, and two nephews. Mildred (Hess) Grimley ’40

March 21, 2010—Mildred was a Sunday school teacher at Akron Church of the Brethren where she taught English and the Bible. She served 21 years as a missionary with husband John B. Grimley ’40 in Nigeria, Africa. She enjoyed quilting, needlepoint and writing. Mildred is survived by four children, six grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and brother George G. Hess ’59.
