Dear Juniatians: The Juniata Alumni Association is probably not the first thing that comes to mind when alumni think of their alma mater. Memories of classmates, professors and good times are more likely to come to mind. That’s the way it should be: our memories define who we are, and where we are on life’s amazing journey. But this journey is both past and future—a recollection of the past and reconnection for the future. In that spirit, the Alumni Association and the Alumni Office are focused like never before on helping alumni reconnect for the future, particularly in their jobs and careers. Today, through what we like to call “the Juniata network,” alumni are connecting and reconnecting to help one another find jobs and build their careers. These connections, through traditional ways and now with social networking tools like Facebook and LinkedIn, are helping Juniata alumni to prosper and navigate a tough economy. The spirit of helpfulness among graduates—a signature Juniata quality—is providing the extra ingredient that can be decisive in finding or landing a job. When unleashed, Juniata helpfulness can be a powerful app, especially in terms of job mobility. In early 2011, Juniata will launch “Juniata Connect,” an online directory designed to better help alumni reconnect with former classmates, as well as forge new connections with Juniatians from other class years, including current students. (How much personal information one chooses to make available through Juniata Connect will be entirely discretionary, the same approach applied to alumni directories published by Juniata in the past.) We think Juniatians will respond positively to Juniata Connect. A survey conducted last spring found that alumni are proud of their Juniata lineage and want to leverage their affiliation. The Juniata Alumni Association and the College are dedicated to making that kind of leverage happen, online as well as in-person through social, professional and service events in cities around the country. Attend a Juniata alumni event in your area. You’ll be amazed at the friendships and contacts you’ll make and rediscover. Veritas liberat!
