Creative Columbus Project Factsheet

Objectives To have a better understanding of Central Ohio’s creative economy, including:  Which creative industries represent Central Ohio’s strengths and opportunities;  Where strong creative industries are geographically clustered and how the clusters are linked; and  Growth and hiring trends, and the skills/education needs of the creative economy. Audience/Use The end product of this project will:  Provide new data that informs other creative/arts-related and civic initiatives (including Columbus 2012, GCAC Cultural Plan);  Guide future policy and business decisions; and  Serve as a resource for the broader public. Definition There are many perspectives on what comprises the creative economy. For this project, the creative economy generally includes the arts (e.g. music, dance, theater, art) and more commercial design-related fields (e.g. graphic design, architecture, event planning, marketing). We are willing to share information about the methodology and data with people who want to craft and analyze their own definition. Data & Methodology The following data will be collected and analyzed:  Government industry and occupation data  Data collected through an online survey of creative businesses, organizations, and self-employed individuals How is this different from other data sources? This project will provide new localized and detailed data not available elsewhere. Government data will be analyzed at zip code level, and survey data will be at the neighborhood level for central areas of Columbus. The industry and occupation categories are detailed, to show specific functions beyond general categories such as “music” or “advertising.” Funders Creative Columbus is generously supported by the Columbus College of Art & Design, the Columbus Foundation, Compete Columbus, the Franklin County Commissioners, the Greater Columbus Arts Council, and The Ohio State University. Researchers Community Research Partners (CRP) is conducting the research, with assistance from the Columbus Chamber of Commerce. CRP is a unique nonprofit research center, working in a wide range of fields, including human services, education, health, housing, employment, safety, poverty, community development, and race and diversity.
