GATHERING A FOLLOWING A collective of 40 local artists is at the heart of the Mahurangi Artist Network.

Annually members open their work spaces (or share spaces if they don’t have a suitable place for visitors) for visitors to view their works and gain a better sense of where the work is coming from, what is possible and what drives the artists to create.

Among the network you will find painters, printmakers, ceramicists, jewellers and resin, mixed media and textile artists at 24 venues from Mahurangi West to Wellsford and from Scotts Landing to Tawharanui.

Talia Russell is a Silk Screen Print Artist, specialising in large scale iconic landscapes. Her dramatic large-scale compositions are depicted in vivid colours, creating a picture window-like view. She is influenced by travel posters of the 1920s and 30s. This impacts on her work in the use of dynamic colours and compositions. Her hand pulled, limited edition silkscreen prints are frequently printed in both traditional colours and bright versions, creating two distinctively different images.

Alysn Midgelow-Marsden is an award-winning textile ‘polymath’, choosing materials and techniques that best suit the ideas she works through - often metal, wire and plastic. She develops wall based and sculptural forms which are complex and lyrical, with an enchanting fluidity. She wants the viewer to create personal and intimate connections

practice is an assemblage of different expressions, from contemporary oil through to abstract acrylic paintings to sculpture and more - whatever works best to bring her vision to life. She loves visiting the Hauraki Gulf islands and in her series ‘Islands’, she looks at our relationship with our coastal environment where our islands have become the guardians of what makes New Zealand unique; nurturing our endangered birds, reptiles, flora and fauna. Philippa Stichbury has recently returned to New Zealand after living and teaching Art in Melbourne. She works in a range of media - painting, collage, digital printing and ceramics to create pieces inspired by New Zealand nature and landscape, and the interplay of colour, texture and pattern.
