THE FUTURA IS BRIGHT Tāmaki Makaurau based artist, Silas Futura (AKA Silas McClintock), grew up in Warkworth with an unconventional upbringing. He was homeschooled alongside his siblings by his mother and was exposed to music by both his parents at an early age. His first experiences with performance were formed here, busking outside the local supermarkets with friends. In 2016, he began taking music seriously under the name, ‘Bobandii’. The Bobandii project was heavily influenced by HipHop and Rap, and Silas continued to make projects under that name until late 2019. Over time, Silas found himself moving towards Jazz, Funk, Soul and RnB influences. With a love for Sci-Fi, he began experimenting with a fictional character ‘Silas Futura’, a Plutonian based in a future where humans have populated the solar system. The same systematic problems that we experience in today's culture are prevalent in Silas Futura’s fictional world, and inequality has become an even more overwhelming force. For Silas, this created a safe space to challenge present day issues within the world and himself. His debut EP, ‘Pluto’ marked the departure of Bobandii and the entrance of Silas Futura; this emergence brought with it a monumental shift for the artist, completely recreating his process of music production from the ground up. For Silas, a move in this direction was a move toward transparency and authenticity for himself as an artist.
Where Silas used to lean heavily into
electronic production, his new approach
has found him working with some of New
Zealand’s most talented musicians to bring forth a cacophony of sound - visiting Jazz,
HipHop, Funk, Soul and R&B along the way. The Pluto album was recorded, mixed and mastered at Red Bull Studio NZ by the
talented Ben Lawson. A fully live tracked
project with a strong influence of Neo Soul, Funk and Jazz, this album also features
some of Silas’ favourite musicians, from an incredible group of gifted jazz musicians on instrumentation to collaborations with
featured artists - Tei, Fable and PollyHill.
Silas is regarded within the community as a musician first, however his multidisciplinary approach to music is what sets him apart from the scene. Coming from the Mahurangi region has been a major influence on the way he approaches his work. One of the core kaupapa of Silas’ work is that the experience comes first, which shines through in the cult following he has created through the spectacle of his live performance and the use of extensive story worlds. His latest work, ‘Compulsion’ is an explosive, energetic track that draws on Funk and Hip Hop to challenge the status quo in a playful manner. Recorded with a live band and with the incredible vocal talents of both Silas and
