First , lets start with an interview from Juliette Hagerman with Melissa Mercedes who we had the pleasure of recently viewing her second FASHION WEEK show! Hello Melissa, first let me start by saying thank you for representing such beautiful collections for curvy women. Melissa where are you from? I was born and raised in New York City.
How did you start designing? I started by styling friends and family. Then I created a styling company Called Retro Boho Chic. After styling for two years, I realized there was a lack of representation in dresses for women of all sizes. After having to make my own dress to attend the Latin Grammys in 2016, I realized something had to be done. That’s when Melissa Mercedes was born. You have had the opportunity to do two LA FASHION WEEKS, lets take a look at some of your latest designs from your second collection before we continue .

Melissa, why are you doing plus designs, and how do you plan on making an impact? Imagine if you could find the perfect dress that makes you feel sexy and look good. Imagine if all of your clothes gave you more confidence. Imagine a world where you are at an event and you don’t have to think or worry about how you look. That's what inspired our Fall/Winter 2018 Collection, which features luxury dresses for curvy/plus size women. Women should have the freedom to move through the world without worrying if they look good or if their size is available. So we designed our pieces to promote self confidence, self love, and empowerment! Here at Melissa Mercedes, all fabrics and cuts are made to compliment your physique. Rather than being held to the current standard of fashion,. Melissa Mercedes guides her clients to develop their own image, and empowers their sense of self. Melissa's goal has always been to help heal people. With her background in counseling, and designing, she has helped people heal from the inside to the outside. Psychology is an understated part of fashion. Each garment and design at Melissa Mercedes will present you with good feelings, with more personality, and with more character in each style.
What do you consider to be your signature style? All of my dresses are different so I don’t think there's a specific signature style. What they all have in common is they are all flattering to the woman’s body. What is your next project ? I just filmed a short film in NYC called Abuela’s Luck where I was executive producer, wardrobe stylist, and had a small role. I’m extremely proud of this film which showcases life inside a NYC bodega. It was actually picked up by a few film festivals one of which was sponsored by HBO.

We work with helping to empower young girls and women by helping install confidence in all sizes through out the U.S. and international ,while showing their beauty to the world. The owner Juliette Hagerman is a casting director and producer of fashion shows, image workshops, photo shoots and competitions worldwide . She has been a plus size advocate for over 20 years. Her work has taken her to different countries, such as Nigeria West Africa, Mexico, parts of the Caribbean, England and several other parts of Europe. Juliette also works as a producer of fashion and beauty events with Silverbird Entertainment TV, in Nigeria where she also trains girls to become Ambassadors for their country. Juliette works with all sizes and has involved herself with teens in bullying campaigns and image seminars throughout the country. We hope you will see the beauty throughout this magazine and spread the word that all sizes CAN REPRESENT FASHION, which the media is still very slow in accepting. Angela Rene’ is CEO and Designer of Rene' Tyler. Angela’s love affair with fashion began at a very young age. She was influenced by her Mother and Grandmother, who taught her the fundamentals of sewing. Being surrounded by women with style, and an eye for fashion, she was destined to become a Designer.
Angela is no stranger to fashion. She worked as a Nail Technician for over 25 years, in High-end Salons, in Boca Raton, FL, Las Vegas, NV, Los Angeles, CA, and owned her own salon in Nassau, Bahamas. Although she loved working in the beauty industry, she always knew she wanted to be a Designer. As a curvy woman, she found the selection of fashions to be limited and unappealing. She always wondered why the plus size department is always hidden in the back of the store, like the ugly stepchild, and why did contemporary, trendy and couture designs, stop at size 14? Her frustration to find fashionable and stylish clothing in her size, gave her the determination to create her own. Out of necessity, her passion grew as well as her clientele. Her love for fashion, jewelry, and accessories made her pursue her lifelong dream. She began to find and create jewelry designs that were unique and in demand. After providing her jewelry for Red Carpet and Formal Events, in 2010, Purple Diva Designs was born.
In 2013, Angela was honored by the Multicultural Motion Picture Association (MMPA), with the Lady in Red Award for her contribution to fashion. She was encouraged to do more for the Plus Industry, since there was a lack of plus-size models in major runway shows, and at LA Fashion Week. She made history as the Producer of the show, Haute Curves LA Fashion Week. The FIRST ever Plus Size Fashion Show, during LA Fashion Week, which celebrated it's second year, on Saturday, October 12, 2013, at the Los Angeles Convention Center. In August 2014, she created a show that celebrates women forty and above! Forty Plus Divas Fashion and Vendor Expo was presented in Las Vegas. This history-making event showcased women sizes, six to twenty-six
