Tavern - Nantes, France

09

Making the 21st century Tavern, or how can this typical and festive french place of the previous century be transposed in our time ? By definition, a tavern is a place where people danse, eat, drink all together. Almost like a federative place, it lets us share a moment with the people we know, but also with the people we meet. By developing the concept of a « large table » as this tavern’s soul, we wanted to keep this idea of a meeting place, where everyone can seat at the same table and share a moment, share a meal, share a danse. The tavern is composed of two buildings, whose architecture results directly from a will of being « at table » in different atmospheres. The first one is situated at the river Erdre’s edge, whereas the second one sliped into the site’s existing trees. As a result, their position creates a central place that will become the tavern’s heart, while preserving the site’s existing vegetation.

shelter n. 2018 with Leah Cocks

.shortlisted project - BeeBreeders Silent Meditation Cabin competition

Meditation cabin - Amata forest, Latvia

017

The dense Amata forest offer its interstices to anchor the architecture in

situ. Then, the shelter’s footprint stretches to slide between the trees, come closer to them, brush them, to take root and rise among the surrounding pines. Presently, like all materials, the construction is subjected to erosion with the passage of time. Little by little it will melt into it’s environment, to become almost invisible, to look as though it had always been there. A dialogue is thus established between the shelter and its setting. This homogenous relationship is the very essence of banality ; as if one did not pre-exist the other.

Palliative Care Center - Nantes, France

037

Nantes, on the horizon 2026 A real treating machine is established on the southern part of the Nantes island : the new university hospital. This arrival irremediably impacts this re-developing area. In the long term, this hospital will become the first element of a new meta-center for the city of Nantes. To cure - To take care This new university hospital operation answer a curative logic. This means that the patients are allowed for a short time. In opposition, the end of life patients need to be assist for a longer and even indeterminate time. Therefore, the hospital can not give them an appropriate medical follow-up. Taboo In France, death remains a delicate subject. Maybe for fear of shocking, death is often rejected of towns. It follows a lack of consideration and support for people at the end of life. Through this project, our aim was to highlight this stage of life, to re-establish the « death consciousness » and move from cure to take care.

rise [across history] 2018 with Andie van Arkel

Art Center - Favignana, Italie

045

Georg Hegel once said that history is not

a frozen reality, but alive, dynamic, in a dialectic movement. A walk of history exists, and this project wanted to explore this perpetual progression, by establishing a dialogue between backwards step and modernity, as assets of progress. The rise redraw an old stone path by placing punctually relics, standing in the way as witnesses of the past. Each relic is different from the other, affirming the phenomenon of diversity of every historical period, with a common tinting. In fact, they are all composed of the same material : a pink concrete made with Favignana’s rocky wastes. These relics thus become a colorful marker of the island’s renewal.

the visitor. The ascension enables the gentle transition between the two athmospheres, also with small galleries developed at different heights.

FROM LIGHT TO SHADOW

« I am facing the entrance with the sun at its peak, this massive stone volume is standing in front of me, as a monumental boundary to cross to discover the unknown. I am entering, my shadow is now merged into the darkness of the space. »

The historical weight of the fortress is materialized by a pronounced passage between outside’s clarity and inside’s obscurity. Also by using shaded thin beams that are drawing the pattern of the experience, as a way to increase heaviness, and underline the cloudiness of the past.

RELICS OF MODERNITY

« I am standing in front of the Tonnarra, witness of Favignana’s tradition. All around me, white buildings, smoothed landscape devoided of vegetation. A passage over the landscape to reach Santa Caterina fortress assert its difference, starting with this pink monolith, as a receptacle of a contemporary work. »

The rise redraw an old stone path by placing punctually relics, standing in the way as witnesses of the past. Each relic is different from the other, affirming the phenomenon of diversity of every historical period, with a common tinting. By using Favignana’s wasted materials, into a reused concrete colored in pink, the resurgence of the island is taking shape.

Truth 173600 m3 of nuclear wastes are buried here. This reflects the human folly. We must now prove that we are aware of that, and spread this message.

Tradition A repeated process, the addition of memory elements at each generation. By tradition, the message is fixed, reinforced and transmitted to the next generation, both physically and mentally.

Heritage A concrete grid, the first WIPP marker. The receptacle of new ways of conveying a same message. The witness of a project common to the humanity.
