Common Laboratory Pipettes

Common Laboratory Pipettes Laboratory pipettes measure out and transfer milliliters or microliters of liquid. They come in various designs each with different levels of accuracy and precision to be utilized according to their specific applications. Some laboratory pipettes are made out of glass and polyethylene while there are also others which are more complex such as adjustable and electronic types.

Here are just three commonly laboratory pipettes used in most laboratories today: 1.

Electronic pipette

This type of pipettor is preferred when precise transfer of liquid is needed. Electronic pipettes are manufactured to provide significant ergonomic benefit in applications with repetitive pipetting because they can be programmed to perform most laboratory tasks possible. 2.

Volumetric pipettes

Volumetric pipettes are specially designed to transfer very accurately a specific amount of solution as such they can only be used to deliver the volume of liquid for which it is calibrated. Volumetric pipettes have narrow tips and a bulb-like expansion in the middle. They are used in making laboratory solutions from a base stock as well as preparing solutions for titration. 3.

Transfer pipettes

Transfer pipettes, compared to their glass counterparts, are made from a single piece of plastic hence they will not shatter or break. There is therefore no hazard of broken glass to speak of. Since this type of pipette is disposable by nature, they are almost always used once thereby reducing the chances for any infectious material to pass on. Transfer pipettes are efficient whenever there is a need for quick and safe transfer of liquids.
