The historical courtyard The courtyard of Sant’ Agata is a very special space and is a collecting point for all the activities going in the former prison. We decided to treat is a monument and to only enhance the historical traces. Therefore we used a strategy of steel framed boxes installed on site easy to assembly and disasembly creating volumes that could seem temporary and as an installation but not taking too much attention to the unique and specific space.

Drawings (1) The contemporary event space that we designed hosts the same group people that are using the cells of services. The space functions during the day as a lounge/ light drink bar and during the night it can be transformed to a club and also used by the hostel. (2) The corridor of the north wing was transformed into a big common space functioning as a waiting room and meeting place. The scars of the building became its atribute, which we decided to preserve complety, contrasting them with the ultra modern part which had been changed recently so it’s not as valuable as the historical part.
