Habonim Dror Cam p Gilboa
spring 2014
Kayitz 2014 Emily Mayer, Rosh Hey, Gilboa Community! My name is Emily Mayer and I am Rosh Gilboa for Kayitz (summer) 2014. Hailing from Berkeley, I now attend Haverford College where I'm in my last semester studying History with a concentration in Gender and Sexuality Studies. I've been attending Gilboa since the great summer of 2004 when I was one of only 35 kids at machaneh (camp)! It has been a pleasure and a joy to watch Gilboa grow strong in our new beautiful campsite. I feel lucky to have been a part of it for this long and to take on this new role this summer. Summer 2014 is already shaping up to be fantastic, filled with the best of past summers and some exciting new ventures. Mazkirut (Camp Leadership - Evan Goldblatt, Elana Bloomfield and Zlil Simchon) is already deep into the pre-summer large-scale planning. Some things to look forward to: We're growing our staff and implementing a new position - Melaveh Shchavot Tzeirot (Madrichim & Chanichim Resource Person) - who will be chinuch's right hand and mentor madrichim (counselors) by adjusting their educational vision to the specific needs of their kvutza (group).

Learning from the models of other activist organizations, we are instigating new pre-summer va'adot (committees) for madrichim (counselors) to ensure that we are collectively building a vision for the summer. And, last but not least, thanks to some hard grant-writing work from Gilboa's Board of Directors, we're getting our pool rebuilt! All of these new innovations promise to make this summer the best one yet as we continue to put down roots at our Bluff Lake site. I want to thank everyone who is putting enormous amounts of energy and passion into making this summer happen. My fellow Mazkirut members, our Madatz Madrichim (Counselors for the Counselors-inTraining – Zach Sagorin and Hannah Klein) and Roshei Mitbach (Kitchen Heads - Sarah Lieberman and Sara Geliebter) have all stepped up to take on new, amazing leadership positions in our community. Dalit Shlapobersky, Zlil Simchon, Sarah Breiner and Zev Dever in the office are thinking every day about how to make our community expand and grow stronger. Thank you to all the counselors who are taking responsibility for the kenim (year-round activities) throughout California and the many families who are doing outreach in their Jewish communities. And last, but certainly not least, Gilboa’s Board and Camp Committee members who provide the support necessary to make camp happen from year to year. It is all of these people and many more who make Gilboa what it is and I look forward to working with all of you. Please do not hesitate to contact me at roshgilboa4ever@gmail.com if you have ideas or thoughts about our upcoming summer! Best - Emily
