Imagine the Good We Can Do Together!
UNRESTRICTED FUNDS In addition to the Foundation’s large unrestricted Community Fund, many donors establish ‘named’ unrestricted funds as part of their family legacy. These families all love or loved the Shelby County community & trusted the Foundation to use their gifts to serve charitable programs that would benefit the residents here forever. They did not want to designate the gift to any one charity, but rather let the Foundation determine current needs that will best serve the community.
Raymond Beck Memorial Fund
Phil & Nancy Brown Family Fund
Ms. Anne DePrez established this fund in 2007 in memory of Mr. Raymond Beck, who passed away in March, 2007. Mr. Beck and his wife, Lorna, lived in Shelby County for 35 years.
Phil and Nancy Brown established their family fund in 2009. It was important to them that their fund be unrestricted so it would always be able to support current community needs. Phil was a past board president, advocate, and community speaker for BRCF for many years before he passed away in 2014.
Gerline Family Fund
Haehl Family Fund
Established in 2014 by Greg Gerline and his mother, Phyllis, to support ongoing community grant making. Greg is a current BRCF board member and past board president.
Plymate Family Fund
Bill and Elaine Haehl established this family fund in 2014. Elaine was a past BRCF Executive Director from 1995 – 2006 and was instrumental in building the Foundation’s funds during those early years to help ensure its sustainability into the future.
Morris L. Rose and Mary F. Rose Fund
Established in 2015 by Bob & Susie Claxton, Brady & Ashley Claxton, Ryan & Jennie Claxton, and Brett & Angela Claxton. Bob was a past board president and Brady is a current board member of BRCF.

Thomas N. and Charlene S. Rosenfeld Fund

Claxton Family Fund

Luke 6:38 Fund
McCrea Family Fund
This unresticted family fund was established in 2014 by board member Lisa Bridges and her husband, Steve, with a gift of stock. The fund will forever support community needs as they arise. The Bridges are strong believers in giving back to the community
Mildred McCrea established her family fund in 2002 before her death in 2006. Mildred was a huge supporter of the Foundation because she strongly believed in the power of endowment and planning for the future.
Showers Family Fund
Thurston Family Fund
Todd Plymate and his sisters, Tracy Holt and Terri Warnecke, established their family fund in 2002 as part of their ongoing commitment of community support. Todd is a past BRCF board president.
This fund was established by the late Morris Rose as part of his estate plans. Mary passed away several years before Morris and he passed away in 2010.
Tom established this family fund in 2014 to both memorialize his wife, Charlene, who passed away in 2013 and to support the community where they lived and enjoyed long and successful careers. Tom is the current BRCF board president.
Established in 1997 by a stock gift from Marshal & Marie, who cared deeply about Shelby County. Sadly, Marie passed away in 1999 & Marshal passed away in 2003.
JR and Carol Showers established their unrestricted family fund in 2002 with the gift of a yacht to BRCF. The Showers are both active in the community and have a long and generous history of supporting community organizations.
Established in 2014 by Amy Thurston Berthouex, Arthur Thurston, Jr., and Samuel Thurston. They are the children of the late Art Thurston who was a great champion of BRCF before his death.
This fund was established by the late Mort and Helen Tobin in 2001 to support BRCF’s efforts to grow unrestricted community grant funds. The Tobins were great supporters of the Foundation and many local organizations. Sadly, both passed away in 2009.
Tobin Family Fund
Bob and Sue Wortman Fund
Established by Bob & Sue in 2014. Bob and Sue are lifetime residents of Shelby County and have been great supporters of the community and BRCF over the years. Sadly, Sue passed away in 2015.

DONOR ADVISED FUNDS Grants from these funds are recommended by the donor(s). Currently, the Foundation’s donor advisors do not accept applications for their grant funds. The first donor advised funds were created in the 1930’s and in recent years have become philanthropy’s fastest-growing giving vehicle.
SCHOLARSHIP FUNDS Grants from these funds are made for educational purposes once a year through a competitive application process. BRCF’s Scholarship Book includes more detailed information on these funds and the application process for awards. The Scholarship Book can be viewed on our website or pick up a copy in our office.
DESIGNATED AND AGENCY FUNDS Grants from designated funds support one or more nonprofit organizations annually based upon the wishes of the donors who established them. Similarly, agency funds are established by nonprofit organizations because they understand the importance of sustainability. Knowing that they will receive an annual payout to help with operating expenses, organizations can spend less time and resources on annual fundraising, and more time focusing on their mission.
A special thanks to donors who have established Unrestricted Community Funds or given to the Blue River Community Foundation Community Fund or Blue River Community Foundation Memorial Fund. All of these funds allow BRCF to respond to the ever changing needs, challenges, and opportunities in our community. We are thankful for all our donors who have created or given to our other types of funds, as well. Without the support of our donors, our work would not be possible.
The Marietta Volunteer Fire Department is one of many local organizations that receive annual support thanks to the Mildred McCrea Designated Fund.
