FA C U LT Y FA C U LT Y A C C O M P L I S H M E N T S Mark A. Torgerson, Ph.D., Professor, Chair, Worship Arts, was awarded a sabbatical leave for the spring 2016 semester. He conducted research on 48 church sites scattered across nine states (from North Dakota to Pennsylvania) between January and August 2016. All of the church buildings examined were designed by architect Edward A. Sövik, the subject of Dr. Torgerson’s doctoral dissertation at the University of Notre Dame (1995). The new research will provide content for completing a comprehensive examination of Sövik’s church design over the full arc of his career, from 1950-1995. Dr. Torgerson served as an assistant editor for Encyclopedia of Christianity in America (Rowman and Littlefield Publishers, forthcoming, November 2016) and authored seven articles (including the primary article on the history of American church architecture). He also completed a published review of The Suburban Church: Modernism and Community in Postwar America for the journal The Catholic Historical Review.

Art and Design faculty members Jeffery Carl, M.F.A., Associate Professor, Chair; Anna Filbert, M.Des., Assistant Professor; Lauren Meranda, M.F.A., Assistant Professor; G.E. Colpitts, M.F.A., Professor, and Terrence Wandtke, Ph.D., Professor, led their second annual Art and Design Student Creative Retreat at Camp Wandawega in Elkhorn, Wis. This year's retreat doubled in size from last year and has now become a sold-out event. Anna Filbert, M.Des., Assistant Professor, Department of Art and Design, was accepted into Light Grey Art Lab's Iceland Artist in Residency Program for summer 2017. Department of Art and Design’s Anna Filbert and Lauren Meranda will have a dual-exhibition of their personal and client design work at Upper Iowa University’s Bing Davis Memorial Gallery from January 12 - February 12, 2017. Christopher C. Miller, Ph.D., Architecture, received an Acanthus Award from the Institute for Classical ArchitectureChicago Midwest Chapter for “Market Bridge for Bath: Fitting Type to Local Character,” a thesis produced for his 2014 Notre Dame University M.Architecture in Urban Design. He presented Responsive Urbanism: Toward a Christian Anthropology of the Built Environment at "The Gospel and the Future of Cities,” a pre-conference to the United Nations Habitat III meeting on the New Urban Agenda in Quito, Ecuador, October 15-16. The Urban Shalom Project is a partnership of the Lausanne/World Evangelical Association Creation Care Network and the International Society for Urban Mission-Micah Global. Miller, in partnership with the Association of Christians in Architecture, curated the Department of Architecture’s James Didier Symposium On Christ and Architecture: Practices Making Community. In September 2016, Jhennifer Amundson, Ph.D., Professor, Architecture, Interim Dean, School of Art, Design and Architecture, presented the paper, “Hand Drawing and the Genesis of the Architecture Profession in the United States,” at the Art of Architecture conference at the University of Notre Dame. Jeffrey O. Henderson, Ph.D., Professor, Biology, Chair, Department of Science and Mathematics, co-authored a review article with Jarod Schieler (Biochemistry, Honors Program, ’16) on dysregulation of the JAK/STAT pathway in cancer cells published April 15, 2016, in the peer-reviewed Journal of Student Research. He mentored four undergraduate students on independent projects given as oral presentations at the 49th annual Student Symposium, Associated Colleges of the Chicago Area, April 16, 2016.

On October 17, 2016, Sean Gallagher, M.Arch., Associate Professor, Architecture, and president of Gallagher Associates Architects P.C., received the City of Geneva Preservation Award for the Norris Residence (213 S. Fifth Street, Geneva, Ill.). The project, one of six selected from 150 candidates, expands an 1893 Queen Anne home to include a first-floor family room and second-story master suite. This is the fourth time Gallagher Associates has received this distinguished honor. Robert Kania, D.M.A., Chair and Professor, Music, was invited to present a lecture on American Piano Music and recital of Piano/Vocal music at the Akademia Muzyczna (Conservatory of Music) in Poznan, Poland, in spring 2016. The lecture, entitled “The Development of American Piano Music,” was sponsored by the Piano Department. The recital featured American piano solo and vocal compositions and was performed by Dr. Kania and his wife, soprano Maria Kanyova. One of the selections was a solo piano composition named “Paradox,” which was composed by Benjamin Richardson ’14, a Judson alum and currently an adjunct professor of Music. This was the European premiere of the work. The recital was sponsored by the Piano and Vocal Departments of the Conservatory. Craig Kaplowitz, Ph.D., Chair, History and Intercultural Studies, Director, The Honors Program, presented a paper, “From Task Force to Signing Statement: The Reagan Administration and Immigration Reform,” at the 2016 Policy History Conference in Nashville, Tenn. He also completed training to be an approved program reviewer for the National Collegiate Honors Council. Sharon Kim, Ph.D., Professor, English, presented a paper on "Allan Dwan and the Genesis of The Great Gatsby" at the American Literature Association conference in San Francisco. She also organized an ALA panel on "Edith Wharton and Religion." At the International Edith Wharton Society conference in June 2016, she presented a paper on "John and Alice Garrett: Art and Ambassadorship in a Time of War." She also began her term as associate editor of the Edith Wharton Review. During fall 2016, her paper on Edith Wharton's The Custom of the Country was published in the book, Edith Wharton and Cosmopolitanism, while her essay, "The Lost Tycoon: Allan Dwan in the Works of F. Scott Fitzgerald," was published in The F. Scott Fitzgerald Review. Darrell Cosden, Ph.D., Professor, Theological Studies, contributed an entry on the Theology of Work to the New Dictionary of Theology: Historical and Sytematic 2nd Edition, eds. Martin Davie, Tim Grass, Stephen R. Holms, and John McDowell, T.A. Noble. Downers Grove: IVP 2016. Joyce Shotick, Ph.D., Associate Professor, Business, presented "Engaging Students in Pricing Studies" at the Marketing Management Association Educators’ Conference in Providence, R.I. While at the conference, she also chaired a session on Promoting Student Collaboration and Accountability. Her paper will be published in the conference proceedings. Rob Currie, Ph.D., Professor, Psychology, served as a guest professor this summer at Tyndale Theological Seminary in Amsterdam, Netherlands. He taught “Lifespan Development and Ministry” during the month of June 2016. Joseph Rumenapp, Ph.D., Professor, Doctor of Education in Literacy Program, recently published two articles. The first one, entitled "Analyzing Discourse Analysis: Teachers’ Views of Classroom Discourse and Student Identity," was published in Linguistics and Education. The second article, entitled "Using Tablets' Video Technology to Enrich Early Childhood Read-Alouds,” was published in the Illinois Reading Council Journal, along with two University of Illinois at Chicago doctoral students – Emily Hoffman and Colleen Whittingham.
