PROFESSIONAL WORK /////////////////////////////////

Rebar Art & Design Studio // 5x5 ArtPlace Plaza Mock-up // Washington, DC

COLORADO PLAZA MOCK-UP ////////////// THE DC OFFICE OF PLANNING APPROACHED REBAR TO PRODUCE A SERIES OF EVENTS IN THE CENTRAL 14TH ST. NW NEIGHBORHOOD WITH THE GOALS OF FOSTERING NEIGHBORHOOD VITALITY. THIS PROJECT WAS JOINTLY FUNDED BY THE DC ARTS AND HUMANITIES’ 5X5 TEMPORARY PUBLIC ART PROJECT AND ARTPLACE AMERICA’S PLACEMAKING GRANT. I WAS THE PROJECT MANAGER FOR TWO WORKSHOPS, A PLAZA MOCK-UP OF THE PROPOSED COLORADO ART PLAZA AND A NEIGHBORHOOD STREET FURNITURE CHARRETTE. WE LED A COMMUNITY PAINTING OF THE STREET AND REPLANTED A SECTION OF THE STREET LANDSCAPE.

CHARRETTE ///////////////////////////////////////////// THIS CHARRETTE FOR 14TH ST. NW ASKED RESIDENTS AND BUSINESS OWNERS WHAT ACTIVITIES THEY’D LIKE TO SEE MORE OF IN THEIR NEIGHBORHOOD. WE SHARED DESIGN PROCESS TOOLS AND STREET FURNITURE PRECEDENTS. PARTICIPANTS FILLED OUT SURVEYS, SKETCHED IDEAS, ANS BUILT SCALE MODEL PIECES. THE INFORMATION GATHERED FROM THE CHARRETTE WAS COMPILED IN A REPORT TO THE DC OFFICE OF PLANNING, AS WELL AS INFORMED THE TEMPORARY FLAT-PACK FURNITURE IN THE DESIGN-BUILD.

STREET FURNITURE DESIGN BUILD ///////////////////////////////// I DESIGNED A SYSTEM OF FLAT-PACK PLYWOOD FURNITURE FOR CENTRAL 14TH ST NW BASED ON OUR FINDINGS FROM THE CHARRETTE. MY ROLES INCLUDED DESIGN DEVELOPMENT FOR THE FLAT-PACK PARTS, MANAGING A SUMMER APPRENTICE, COORDINATING CLIENT MEETINGS, COMMUNICATING WITH LOCAL PARTNERS, AND OVERSEEING THE CNC FABRICATION. THE KIT OF PARTS INCLUDED PIECES FOR A PLANTER, HIGH STOOLS, BAR TABLES, FOOT STOOLS, AND A SWING/MESSAGE BOARD. MANY OF THE PIECES HAD INTERCHANGABLE ANIMAL PROFILES. THE GOVERNING CONCEPT BEHIND THE DESIGNS WAS TO ALLOW FOR EASY ASSEMBLY/DISASSEMBLY ON THE SIDEWALK. DURING THE COURSE OF A WEEK, WE HELD A SERIES OF COMMUNITY WORKSHOPS IN A VACANT STOREFRONT IN WHICH RESIDENTS PARTICPATED IN SANDING, PAINTING, AND ASSEMBLING THE WOOD PIECES. THE FURNITURE BROUGHT IDEAS ABOUT ACTIVATING PUBLIC SPACES AND URBAN PLAY TO THE NEIGHBORHOOD.

THE GREAT ROOM LOUNGE ///////////////////////// THE GREAT ROOM IS THE SECOND ITERATION OF THE FLAT-PACK FURNITURE. IT COMBINES THE LANGUAGE OF THE FLAT PLYWOOD PIECES WITH SUSPENDED FISHING NETS TO TURN A PARKING LOT INTO A LARGE OUTDOOR URBAN LIVING ROOM. THE FURNTIURE PROVIDED SEATING FOR THE ZERO1 BIENNIAL’S OPENING NIGHT OF LIVE PERFORMANCES, A MOVIE SCREENING, AND GATHERING OF FOOD TRUCKS. THE GREAT ROOM CONTRASTS THE LOT’S URBAN HARDSCAPE AS IT ALLOWS FOR SWINGING, LOUNGING, AND RELAXING.

HUNTINGTON PARK PLAYGROUND OUTREACH ////

Rebar Art & Design Studio // Huntington Park Playground Outreach // San Francisco, CA

I WORKED WITH RESIDENTS OF THE NOB HILL NEIGHBORHOOD IN SAN FRANCISCO TO ESTABLISH VISIONS FOR A RENOVATED HUNTINGTON PARK PLAYGROUND. MY ROLE WAS TO LEAD A SERIES OF COMMUNITY WORKSHOPS IN COORDINATION WITH THE FRIENDS OF HUNTINGTON PARK PLAYGROUND, GLS LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE, SF PARKS ALLIANCE, AND THE SAN FRANCISCO RECREATION AND PARKS DEPARTMENT. WE FACILITATED A CHARRETTE IN WHICH RESIDENTS LEARNED ABOUT FALL ZONES, CHOOSING EQUIPMENT FOR AGE GROUPS, AND DIRECTLY PARTICIPATED IN THE DESIGN PROCESS. 6 FT.

INTERSECTION CONCEPT DESIGN //////////////////////////////////// I FINALIZED THE CONCEPT DESIGN FOR THIS PUBLIC ART PIECE FOR PORTLAND TRI-MET’S CLINTON STREET STATION ON THE NEW PORTLAND-MILWAUKIE LIGHT RAIL LINE. THE SCULPTURE, INSPIRED BY ABSTRACT SUBWAY MAPS, REPURPOSES LIGHT RAIL TO BECOME A WAY-FINDING LANDMARK FOR THE STATION. NW PACIFIC BASALT COBBLESTONE LINES THE BOTTOM OF THE SCULPTURE, WHICH WILL ACCOMODATE RUSTY RUN-OFF AS THE PIECE WEATHERS.

Superfun(d) Housing // Fall 2011 // UCB

SUPERFUN(d) HOUSING ////////////////////////// THIS PROJECT IS A HOUSING REDEVELOPMENT PROPOSAL FOR ALAMEDA NAVAL AIR BASE, A POST-INDUSTRIAL SUPERFUND SITE. THE PROPOSAL TAKES THE SITE’S EXISTING INFILL CONDITION AND DEVELOPES AN ORGANIZATIONAL LANGUAGE OF HEAVY V. LIGHT. THE HEAVY GROUND CONDITION HAS THICKENED WALLS THAT ACT ALSO AS SERVICE CORRIDORS, WHICH CONTRASTS WITH AN AIRY ROOF CONDITION. MULTIPLE ITERATIONS WERE CREATED BASED ON SITE INFORMATION, SUN AND WIND PRINCIPLES FOR INDIRECT LIGHTING AND NATURAL VENTILATION. THIS PARTICULAR PROPOSAL HAS 40 HOUSING UNITS, 3 PUBLIC GARDENS, A CARSHARE PARKING LOT, AMENITY UNITS, AND WIDENING VISTAS TOWARDS THE SAN FRANCISCO BAY. 1949

Superfun(d) Housing // Fall 2011 // UCB THE PROPOSAL CREATES A FLEXIBLE FRAMEWORK FOR UNITS TO BE FILLED IN OR LEFT OUT ACCORDING TO NEED. WATER FILTRATION UNITS ARE PROVIDED AT THE PERIPHERY OF THE SITE, TO ALLOW FOR FURTHER ENVIRONMENTAL REMEDIATION EFFORTS. THE PROPOSAL CAN BE UTILIZED IN OTHER BROWNFIELD SITES WITH DIFFERENT INPUT VARIABLES. THE LANGUAGE OF THE UNIT ROOFS WAS FORMED BY CHOPPING SPHERES. THE SINUOUS FORMS OF THE OVERARCHING SHELLS PROVIDE UNIQUE LIGHTING CONDITIONS AND OPPORTUNITIES FOR NATURAL VENTILATION. THE VARYING HOUSING SIZES ALLOW ACCOMODATION FOR DIFFERENT TYPES AND SIZES OF FAMILIES AND BUDGETS. PLOTS THAT ARE TOO SMALL TO ACCOMODATE HOUSING ARE FILTRATION UNITS OR PARKS.

Castle Conference Center // Summer 2010 // Guardamar de Segura, Spain

CASTLE CONVENTION CENTER ////////////// THIS STUDIO WAS A SEVEN WEEK TRAVEL STUDIO BASED IN GUARDAMAR DEL SEGURA, SPAIN. THE PREMISE OF THE CLASS WAS TO DEVELOP A PROPOSAL FOR REUSING THE RUINS OF THE MEDIEVAL TOWN’S CASTLE. THE CLASS BEGAN WITH HISTORICAL SURVEYS AND DRAWING OBSERVATIONS AND EMOTIONS OF THE TOWN’S PAST. MY ARCHITECTURAL LANGUAGE CAME OUT OF OBSERVATIONS OF THE LAYERING OF SCARS INFLICTED ON THE TOWN THROUGH FOREIGN INVASION. THE PROGRAM IS AN ARCHEOLOGICAL RESEARCH CENTER AND MUSEUM.

Castle Conference Center // Summer 2010 // Guardamar de Segura, Spain THE PROPOSAL BRINGS PEOPLE THROUGH A LARGE ROOM-ELEVATOR THAT DESCENDS INTO A PRIMARILY UNDERGROUND SCHEME. VIEWS OPEN TO NEIGHBORING DEFENSIVE POSTS TORREVIEJA AND SANTA POLA ALONG THE COAST, AS AN HOMAGE TO THE CASTLE’S DEFENSIVE ROOTS. SPACES ARE LAYERED SO THAT THE ROOFS CAN BE OCCUPIED ON THE EXTERIOR. MATERIAL DIFFERENCES WILL SERVE AS WAYFINDING THROUGHOUT THE SPACE.

LIVINGFOGROOM /////////////////////////////////// LOCATED IN SAN FRANCISCO’S SOMA NEIGHBORHOOD, LIVINGFOGROOM PROVIDES RESIDENTS A PLACE TO GATHER. THE RECREATIONAL CENTER IS A NEW SEMI-PUBLIC SPACE FOR EXERCISING, SWIMMING, READING, WORKING, AND SOCIALIZING. THE SOUTHERN SKIN OF THE BUILDING ON 9TH STREET WILL PASSIVELY CAPTURE FOG DURING EARLY SAN FRANCISCO MORNINGS AND USE THE WATER FOR BUILDING SYSTEMS DURING THE DAY.

BECAUSE OF THE LIMITED SIZE OF THE SITE, MY OPERATIONAL STRATEGY WAS TO PLACE THE GYM AT THE FIRST FLOOR, AND ORGANIZE THE REMAINING PROGRAM ON TOP OF THE PLINTH INTO THREE COLUMNS. THE FACADES ON MISSION STREET AND MINNA STREET EMPLOY SHUTTERS THAT OPEN FOR CROSS-VENTILATION.

RECREATION

THE FOG-GATHERING SKIN IS COMPOSED OF CURVED STRIPS OF EFTE, WHICH ALLOW WATER DROPLETS TO FORM. LARGER DROPLETS FORM THROUGH CAPILLARY ACTION, AND GRAVITY THEN BRINGS THE WATER TO A TROUGH AT THE BOTTOM OF THE FACADE. BASED ON THE ANNUAL AVERAGE OF 14 DAYS OF HEAVY FOG IN SAN FRANCISCO, THERE IS A POTENTIAL TO GATHER 33,600 L OF WATER PER YEAR. THIS WATER COULD BE USED TOWARDS POWERING BUILDING SYSTEMS AND BATHROOM FACILITIES.

Introduction to Structures // Fall 2009 // UCB THE OBJECTIVE OF THIS ASSIGNMENT WAS TO DESIGN A STRUCTURE THAT SPANS 36” AND DOES NOT ENTER A 1 CUBIC FOOT RESTRICTED ZONE. THE SPAN COULD ONLY BE CONSTRUCTED USING BASSWOOD AND FISHING WIRE. THE CULMINATION OF THE PROJECT WAS LOADING THE SPAN UNTIL IT FAILED. COMPUTER MODELLING IN SAP 2000 WAS USED TO INFORM CONSTRUCTION AND MATERIAL THICKNESS, AND DESIGN FOR A 150 LB LOAD. THE SPAN ULTIMATELY HELD 260 LBS BEFORE IT EXPERIENCED SHEAR FAILURE.

Plan on becoming a Licensed Architect? Learn about the path to Architectural Licensing in California Each State regulates the profession of architecture, granting licensure to practice architecture within their jurisdictions based on their specific requirements. However, all states require satisfaction of education, experience and examination requirements. As an individual in the process, it’s important to understand those requirements and what the path to architecture licensure entails for you.
